Next week, the Top 4 finalists–Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert–will receive advice from guest mentor Slash and then take the stage Tuesday to perform rock songs.

On Wednesday’s results show, Daughtry is set to debut their new single “No Surprise” from their upcoming album, due out later this year.

Plus a re-united No Doubt, take the Idol stage to perform.

Rock music is such an amalgam of influences, “Rock Week” could end up being a pretty broad theme, depending on how the producers define it.

I’m definitely looking forward to this. I rather enjoyed this week last season and hope the contestants are able to pick the right songs from a hopefully broad theme.

  • leome

I thought you were saying there was no surprise there, cause we had figured that out already, till I realized it was the single it’s called No Surprise (duh!)

Oh, No Doubt! That will be fun. Could be a good week.

  • sr4mjc

But will they each get two songs?

  • terps

I so want Slash to mentor the guys with his black top hat and a smoke in his mouth

  • Thea

    Slash? :-) )

  • duncan

Rock week and Daughtry!!! That makes me happy!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    No Doubt?!?!?!?!?1111!!1!1!1!1!1

I’m more excited about that than rock week, Slash, and Daughtry combined lol. I loooooooove No Doubt.

  • Valentin432

    Best week ever!!!
4 amazing singers; 2 rockers for rock week, a very tight competition.

I just hope the producers don’t screw this up and give us two songs.

  • mk88

2 songs!!! to have 4 songs in one hour show would be bad!!!

  • abbysee

Rock week was great last year. I have no doubt, (pun) that it will be a watershed moment as well. I expect Allison to do well. I expect Adam to be really worried about what he should do in a genre that should have no boundaries for him. Maybe America would like it if he did a hymn. Oh well. As long as I have another song for my Ah-dam playlist.

  • KrazeeK120

SLASH!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s awesome that he agreed to be a mentor. He’s a BIG name. I’m super-duper excited. I expect Adam and Allison to do well. I have to admit, I’m worried about Kris, but maybe he’ll put his Mraz-y spin on something and it will be awesome. Danny will probably shout something at me totally off key and half out of breath. Yay.

  • ettacandy

Whoot! Whoot! Adam and Allison made it to Rock Week!!

    SLASH will be great… he’s very talented…
DAUGHTRY will be great… Chris is very talented and the group is good live…
I always loved No Doubt, but am no fan of Gwen Stefani’s since her appearance as a mentor a few years ago. She was… argh so full of herself. I hope No Doubt “ska’s it up”, old school style!

  • yeahyeahsure

No Doubt! Daughtry! Slash! Kris! Allison! Adam! I’m in heaven.

  • terps

Adam please do your version of Dust in the Wind

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I expect Adam to be really worried about what he should do in a genre that should have no boundaries for him. Maybe America would like it if he did a hymn.

Hey, it worked for KLC. Maybe he’s taking a page out of the wrong Cook’s playbook. He needs to find his rock song equivalent of “God Bless the USA.” Heh. ;)

  • Kirsten

    Daughtry Debuts Single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No Surprise

Okay, am I the only one who finds that ironic given he’s performing on the Final 4 Results show?

LOL. Oh, the look on his face that night was priceless. As was the indignant meltdown in the news/blogs/etc. Hmm….maybe the producers are setting up for another shock boot that night. Save on Final 7 night when Jennifer Hudson is there on the anniversary of her ouster. Shock boot when Daughtry returns and he can give his “advice”? Ryan: “So, Chris, what should the contestants do if they get booted early?” Chris: “Well, Ryan, you just have to make sure that you are TCO and AI will take care of you.” Sage advice, indeed.

Slash could be interesting. Rock night almost never works. I don’t think we’ll get an epic trainwreck, but we’ll likely get a whole pile of “Meh”. While rockers look good rocking up a lame old song, it’s tough to change up a rock song to …another rock song… Meanwhile, Danny will belt something (I expect some Journey out of him) and Kris will bring the mellow.

  • Anonyme

Oh, God that look on Daughtry’s face. How painful. Well, it doesn’t seem so bad now with a few years’ perspective, but man, that must have HURT.

  • cheese

Thanks for posting the Daughtry boot face, pic. That never gets old.

I think it’s going to be impossible to predict what the Idols might sing next week – I wonder if they’ll just dig out the songs that were cleared for last year’s R&R Hall of Fame theme.

  • tinawina

Yeah Rock week is an odd bird. Those songs are often sung by people who are not Idol kinds of singers – highly stylized vocalists. Plus idol tends to go for the cheesy or cliche rock songs. So it could be a big old trap for someone like Allison. Danny is probably at an advantage because no one expects anything from him. Kris would do well by picking a harder song and switching it up. Adam is a wildcard, but then again he always is. Now he’s gotta go all out after the whole bottom 2 thing. Its ironic that Daughtry will be on. Anyone who gets eliminated at this point will be something of a shock boot, except maybe Allison. And they could almost all go on to be Daughtry. This is going to be fun to watch.

  • Valentin432

    Slash could be interesting. Rock night almost never works. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get an epic trainwreck, but weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll likely get a whole pile of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Mehà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

I don’t know what you are talking about, there have been four themes I consider rock: Queen night and Elvis Prestley night on AI5, both were pretty good, then Bon Jovi night who was the best by far of season 6.
Only last year was a bit of letdown but that was mainly due to Castro meltdown and Cook relatively weak showing.

Anyone who gets eliminated at this point will be something of a shock boot, except maybe Allison.

Funny, I have the complete opposite opinion, I think whoever gets eliminated next week won’t be surprising, they are all at risk right now.
THe race is very tight that’s why we are getting no clear results on DI these last few weeks.
Allison was in the top 2 this week and has a theme that should be good for her, why would she be less of a surprise eliminatoin than the other 3???

  • Tess

Guess I need to take a trip over to whatnottosing so that I can see what everyone will be singing next Tuesday. Considering that this week all 5 songs had been sung on AI (most of them at least twice) I’m sure we will have rehash again. I’m not being facetious either. I think at this point in the competition, with all the pressures on the contestants, they will just look at the approved list and pick a couple. None of them want to go through the angst of waiting for a new, chosen song to clear.

  • rockvixen

Woohoo No Doubt is performing!.. I’m more excited about that than Slash haha. I wish Axl Rose was mentoring instead as he is a star and a singer and probably would give more valuable advice.

  • tinawina

Allison was in the top 2 this week and has a theme that should be good for her, why would she be less of a surprise eliminatoin than the other 3???

Because she’s been in the bottom a few times, that’s all.

One would expect Adam fans have been scared into voting like mad next week. Kris and Danny have always been popular, and when you think about it, being the top vote getter of the bottom 3 when there are only 5 contestants is not really a sign of massive vulnerability. Especially when he went 1st and was not the best performer. There is a reason Top 5 usually has a bottom 2, not a bottom 3. Allison remains the most vulnerable, on paper anyway.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Last I knew, Slash doesn’t sing. If I am wrong, let me know. I know he is a darned good guitar player. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to have a Rock SINGER be a mentor? Just askining….

That being said, Adam can do Axl Rose songs easily. How do you condense “September Rain” into 2 minutes?

  • Victoria

None of them want to go through the angst of waiting for a new, chosen song to clear.

Adam may already have a few songs cleared he can do, though. Earlier in the season we found out he had requested Duran Duran, Aerosmith, Queen, Bowie, and Wild Cherry, and he definately got the Queen song at that point. I hope he sings one of those, because it will mean we haven’t heard it on Idol before…

  • Thea

I’m not sure it would be a good idea for Adam to do a GnR song, or a Queen song — he would sound copycat. I realize it’s weird… he is the only one who could even remotely sound like those two great singers, and that’s the reason why he should not do it!

On the mentor issue: Axl would not have accepted to be a mentor I believe… And he’s way too unpredictable for the AI producers. :devil_tb:
    Slash is much more mellow!

  • Kirsten

Last I knew, Slash doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing. If I am wrong, let me know. I know he is a darned good guitar player. Wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it have made more sense to have a Rock SINGER be a mentor? Just askiningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I hear you, but if anything has been made clear by the producers this year, this is not a SINGING competition. They had Quentin as a freakin’ mentor. At least Slash is musical.

Earlier in the season we found out he had requested Duran Duran, Aerosmith, Queen, Bowie, and Wild Cherry, and he definately got the Queen song at that point. I hope he sings one of those, because it will mean we havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t heard it on Idol beforeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

But AI is already had a “Queen” week so we know a lot of those songs were cleared (they sang a whack load of them during the Group number as well…boy, do I miss those days. Last night’s mini-medley was refreshing). So, I’m not sure AI is doing much in the clearing front. Matt and Kris seem to be the only two who have managed to get something modern cleared (and by modern, I mean something written in the last 10 years) and in the last few weeks even that hasn’t been happening.

Perhaps the AI clearance lawyers have recently been replaced by Bruce Gower and he’s doing his usual exceptional job. Any minute now and the kids will have to start singing songs that have gone out of Copyright. You just know that Danny is going to try to tackle “Nessun dorma”. I hope he keeps the pelvic thrusts to a minimum.

  • Victoria

Thea, I agree… I think Adam could easily be pegged as copycat, although probably not by the judges since they wouldn’t dare criticize their precious frontrunner. But, I think it could cause a lot of “OMG ADAM LIKE EVEN AWESOMER THAN FREDDIE!!1!11!” in younger fans and some “Freddie is incredible and Adam can’t hold a ccandle to him” in older fans, which could cause the older to fans to dislike Adam. It’s a stupid reason, but it’s happened before.

  • kimberann

    I love rock week.
I wanted Adam to get the boot. :sealed_tb: It looks like Danny will win. He’s the only one to never touch the bottom 3.

  • tinawina

I’m thinking the clearing issues are being complicated by the fact that the songs are now released to ITunes. If someone has a song that is in any way recent, the Idol version could cannibilize sales. In theory anyway.

  • lovecert

Adam needs to do a song from Evanescence and David Bowie

ETA:I just re-watch the last few minutes of the results show and Ryan specifically said “Rock N Roll” which makes me wonder if the song choices are really that varied.

  • Thea

However, to contradict what i just said above, how cool would it be for Adam to sing Under Pressure, doing both Freddie’s and Bowie’s parts?!? Amazing song.
Tough one to condense in 90” tho.

  • CookorHubbyHmm

It would be awesome if Slash took the stage WITH them. How fun would that be? I know it would never happen…too distracting etc. But, it would be cool.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Ooooh. No Doubt! I’m excited. Love them.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

OMG OMG OMG – I just thought of something I have been waiting and hoping for Daughtry to do his song “What I want” with Slash on guitar, maybe maybe maybe this next week they will do that together!!! That would be sooooo awesome, yes indeed!

    THIS:

  • JJ123

I’m so happy all of this is confirmed!! It looks like it’s going to be an awesome results show….and who cares which one goes, 4th is a good spot to be in….plenty of time to do the press circuit and everyone’s interest in the show is high.

  • bean99

Oh, God that look on Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face. How painful. Well, it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem so bad now with a few yearsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ perspective, but man, that must have HURT.

I remember how bad I felt so can only imagine. It ruined the rest of the season for me but glad that he’s done so well since then. I’m quite excited about seeing the new single.

I think Kris will be most at risk. I know I’m voting for Allison.

  • mandalay

I know this song has been cleared before because Sundance Head butchered it. Adam would be pretty amazing doing Stairway to Heaven. Check out this performance. Adam would sound better than Plant IMO.

  • weareallinnocent

Okay, am I the only one who finds that ironic given heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performing on the Final 4 Results show?

No, you’re not the only one. :-)

Sadly though, for an avid fan who just suffered through the bottom 2 as though I were there with him (lol) I’m fearing the “great TV” mirror image thing happenin’ to my boy, Adam. :-(

    Hate. This. Show. (LOL)

  • anubha

I wonder how they will incorporate the “Judge’s Choice” this year, since this would have been the week to do it, with four judges on the panel.

  • annabelina

Omg! NOT Gwen, but No Doubt! YES!

Adam will do something unexpected. Danny will do something light (in terms of rock) that he can gospel-out to. Allison will do something predicable, but will suit her voice. What I’m really interested in is what Kris will do.

  • jersey

Kimberann, don’t forget, if I’m not mistaken (and I may be) Daughtry never touched the bottom three until the night he got the boot. And it was top 4. Danny isn’t home free.

  • steve

If you sing Stairway to Heaven or dust in the wind. You better not butcher them. I grew up with them and i know alot of friends that dont like adam’s version.I like adam but you have to make everyone happy (to win now its top 4)Hope they all do great and i know allison and adam will be fine win or lose.

  • colette

hear you, but if anything has been made clear by the producers this year, this is not a SINGING competition. They had Quentin as a freakinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ mentor. At least Slash is musical.

    Right on, babycakes!

I’m a teensy worried about Kris.

But Kris, if you are lurking anywhere in the vicinity: rock week doesn’t mean you have to blow your tonsils out, baby! I point you in the direction of some most estimable rockers who had sweet voices such as yours: Buddy Holly being my absolute fave. I mean, Tender Dogg on “Don’t know much about history….” or “Peggy Sue Got Married Yesterday” or even “Rave On”? consider it!

Also there’s many rock tunes by Paul Simon (“Me & Julio,” “Kodachrome”), or Sting (“Don’t Stop,” “Every Breath You Take”) or Elvis Costello (“Allison,” “Peace Love & Understanding”)

And there must be some more current stuff just made for the sensitive musicality of Mr. A. Just don’t try to duke it on on Gokey/ Cocker or Adam/Bowie or (haha) Allison/Janis ground.

I DO NOT want to hear my boy doing “Stairway to Heaven” under any circumstances….. :rasberry_ee:

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

MJ – CAN YOU FIX MY POST PLEASE ^^^^^^^^

  • SpenserJ

    SLASH!!!!!!!!!!!! Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s awesome that he agreed to be a mentor. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a BIG name. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m super-duper excited.

I’m excited too! Slash is a great guitarist, and he knows a lot about putting together a kick ass rock tune. I expect him to hold nothing back, which should be awesome.

I assume the reason they picked Slash instead of Axl is because Axl is batshit.

Oh Cheese, I so agree with you, that picture never gets old. Thanks for the laugh Kirsten.

  • Kirsten

Kimberann, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t forget, if Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not mistaken (and I may be) Daughtry never touched the bottom three until the night he got the boot.

Not quite correct. Chris was a bottom 2 dweller during a “Huff” night, too. Chris, Kellie and Ace were the Bottom 3 during Top 7 night, then Kellie was sent to safety leaving Chris in the bottom 2 with Ace.

Here is the track record for bottom 4 bootees:
    Season 7: Jason Castro : Bottom 3 Top 10
    Season 6: LaKisha Jones: Bottom 3 Top 9, Bottom 2 Top 7
Season 5: Chris Daughtry: Bottom 2 Top 7
Season 4: Anthony Fedorov: Bottom 3 Top 7, Bottom 2 Top 6 and Top 5
Season 3: Latoya Jackson Bottom 3 Top 10 and Top 7
Season 2: Josh Gracin: Bottom 2 Top 6
    Season 1: Tamyra Gray

So, there doesn’t seem to be any pattern for Top 4 boots and Tamyra is the only person booted in the Top 4 that had never hit the seal. Up to that point, her and Kelly were the only ones that haddn’t been in the bottom 3.

  • jersey

Thanks, Kirsten. I did forget about that.

  • Kirsten

    Also thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s many rock tunes by Paul Simon (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Me & Julio,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Kodachromeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), or Sting (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Stop,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Every Breath You Takeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) or Elvis Costello (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Allison,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Peace Love & Understandingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ )

Hmm…I love “Kodachrome”, but if he’s tackling Paul Simon and Sting, may I suggest “Cecilia” for his upbeat number and “Fields of Gold” for his heartfelt song (first number with him playing the guitar, second with a lush ochestra and him emoting). That is if they get two songs.

  • tinawina

Interesting. Did Clay ever hit the seal? I know neither David did last year. How many winners and runner ups never hit bottom?

  • Tracy

I sure hope this week is good. Is it confirmed that they’re doing two songs? *crosses fingers*

And No Doubt! Ahhh my early adolescence!

  • Kirsten

Interesting. Did Clay ever hit the seal? I know neither David did last year. How many winners and runner ups never hit bottom?

No. Clay never hit the seal.

    Here is the run down:

    Winners:
Season 1: Kelly Clarkson – None
    Season 2: Ruben Studdard – Bottom 2 Top 5
    Season 3: Fantasia Barrino – Bottom 2 Top 7 and 4
Season 4: Carrie Underwood – None
Season 5: Taylor Hicks – None
Season 6: Jordin Sparks – None
Season 7: David Cook – None

    Runner-ups:

    Season 1: Justin Guirani – Bottom 2 Top 7
Season 2: Clay Aiken – None (but he was the Wildcard)
    Season 3: Diana Degarmo – Bottom 3 Top 11, 9 and 8
    Season 4: Bo Bice – Bottom 2 Top 8
    Season 5: Kat McPhee – Bottom 2 Top 10 and 4
    Season 6: Blake Lewis – Bottom 3 Top 7
Season 7: David Archuletta – None

    Third:
    Season 1: Nikki McKibbin: Bottom 3 Top 6, 7 and 9. Bottom 2 Top 4 and 5
    Season 2: Kimberley Locke: Botom 3 Top 12, 9, and 8 Bottom 2 Top 4
Season 3: Jasmine Trias: Bottom 3 Top Top 6, Bottom 2 Top 9 and 5
    Season 4: Vonzell Solomon: Bottom 3 Top 9 and 6, Bottom 2 Top 4Top 5
Season 5: Elliott Yamin: Bottom 3 Top 8, Bottom 2 Top 9 and Top 5
    Season 6: Melinda Dolittle: None
    Season 7: Syesha Mercados: Bottom 3 Top 12, 10, 8, and 7, Bottom 2 Top 6

It seems that typically, winners don’t hit the seal. People booted third typically hit the seal a fair bit. Taylor Hicks is the only winner that was “The Huff” (other Huffs are George Huff (5th), Bo Bice (2nd), Melinda Dolittle (3rd) and Archie (2nd)).

  • clearone

They better be able to do 2 songs next week or at least let them sing an entire song. They get so ripped off only getting to sing for 90 seconds or so.

Adam will be walking a tightrope in this genre. Firstly, people figure it’s ‘his genre, he’ll rock!’ ….. well need we remember how well Matt and Lil did in their perceived genres? Song choice is going to be very important for Adam plus he needs to find that middle-ground that will draw back the casul viewer yet not alienate some diehards (though I can’t understand being a diehard and not voting for him even if he sang You Light Up My Life!)

I’d love to hear something like Bon Jovi’s ‘Bed of Roses’ from Adam. I think it’s a great rock ballad and it’s pretty current.

  • tinawina

    Thanks Kirsten!

So the finalists who never hit the seal are Kelly, Clay (sorta), Carrie, Taylor, Jordin, Archie and Cookie… and so far this season, Danny (maybe Kris too?) is the only one who might join the list. I’m not sure if I can count Kris, since they’ve never done a bottom 3 at top 5 before. If they had done bottom 2, he would not have technically hit the seal. I’m inclined to give him a pass for that.

With the glaring exception of Taylor, the non bottom dwellers do go on to the biggest commercial success after their season ends. Well, there are still more season 7 albums to come out so we can’t count them yet, but it is true so far. Hmmmmm…..

  • Valentin432

I hope Adam doesn’t get all ballad on us because he was in the B2 this week, from what I’ve seen from him, I don’t think he will compromise that much but again he seemed to really want to win.

I do think Gokey is going to do well, he seemed really poised this week and nobody can really deny that he has a good voice. I wonder if he will continue to improve on his stage presence or if he will return to the cheesecake factory?

  • TKat

Can someone tell me if Ryan ever said that Adam was in the Bottom 2? He did say that he was in the Bottom 3, and then that Kris was Safe. I think that either Kris or Adam could have been #4.

Big wake up call to all ADAM FANS — VOTE this week!!

  • colette

By the way, all this “seal” talk has got me thinkin’ about this “best season ever” nonsense.

Are you gonna tell me that this is better than this Top 4:

    Hicks, McPhee, Yamin, Daughtry

    or this Top 4:

    Sparks, Lewis, Doolittle, Jones

    or even:

    Suddard, Aiken, Locke, Gracin

I don’t love everyone of the above artists, but most could match up to this year’s singing talent — or best it!

I know, I know, every year the AI judges have to say it’s the best season ever to justify the show’s continuing existence. I just don’t have to buy it.

  • Layla

Boy oh Boy…rock week and I’m taking my class for the annual camp school trip. We leave on Monday and back on Thursday…will have to hide and call one of my daughters to give me the news about Adam-uh I mean the performances and the results. They hate idol but will do it for mom. It would be great news if she told me that Danny ¨’s smarmy ass had been given the boot.

Thanks to MJ I can check out the vids and comments when I get home.

I really hope Adam is scared away from being himself! If they sing two songs he will have the opportunity to “please” the fans who love his oTT stuff, and then sing a classic slow familiar rock song for the casual viewer/voter.

  • Victoria

Can someone tell me if Ryan ever said that Adam was in the Bottom 2?

    He did.

  • sterling

Yes Tkat, he asked jamie foxx if he expected this to be the bottom 2.

  • sterling

Also, check out slash’ tweeter. He said yesterday he was going to make “rock week” on idol just that, and today said he thinks next week should be interesting. I’m dying to see them really rock out.

  • kerfuffle

I wonder how they will incorporate the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Judgeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Choiceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this year, since this would have been the week to do it, with four judges on the panel.

anubha, you bring up a very good point. Maybe they’ll do Judges’ Choice this week? Of course that would change the part of the home town visits where the respective mayors of the home towns inform the Idols what they’ll be singing. It boggles. :wacko_tb:

  • Valentin432

    By the way, all this à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“sealà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ talk has got me thinkinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ about this à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“best season everà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ nonsense.

Not sure if this is in the right thread but:
I don’t think Simon said that, he said it was the best top 5 show in the history of the series, I think the only one that could compare is Season 2 with Clay singing Solitaire.

Now, if you want to compare the top 4:
YMMV but there are several media people claiming that it is in fact one of the most talented top 4.
It is the highest rated one in the WNTS database.

Adam on vocal talent alone (with his range and control) is in the same category as Kelly, Carrie, Clay or Melinda wheter you like his style or not.
Danny has a powerfull soulfull voice, he has a better voice than Hicks IMO even tough I prefer Taylor.
Allison is rated way higher than any other underraged contestant in the history of the show, her vocal performances are impressive and she works the stage better than most too, I like her way more than Jordin, Archuleta, Degarmo…
Kris is hard to compare with contestants from years previous season 7 because they didn’t have people like him, but he has proved he deserves to be here with current and hip versions of classics.

Kris reminds me a bit of Jason Castro in singing style and voice. What did Castro do on Rock Week last year? I’m concerned but hopeful that Kris can pull it off.

I am preparing myself however for another couple of busses driven by Simon to run over Kris and Allison once again no matter how well they do. He will not stop until he gets his chosen Final 2. :annoyed_tb:

  • AmandaRae2512

I honestly feel that this is the BEST Top 4 ever in Idol history. They’ve all been very consistent week after week. No trainwrecks to speak of from any of them. Past Top 4′s have all been great as well, but I believe this is the strongest one based consistency and vocals.

  • mandalay

They’ll probably just let Simon pick all three judges choices. We’ll get Over the Rainbow, Il Divo and Leona. Yippeeeee!

  • golcook

    Did you know….

Daughtry has a song with Slash “What I Want” included in his debut album…

    Listen to it HERE.

  • sweetie99v

With the glaring exception of Taylor, the non bottom dwellers do go on to the biggest commercial success after their season ends. Well, there are still more season 7 albums to come out so we canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t count them yet, but it is true so far. Hmmmmmà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

Not really. Carrie and Kelly are really the most successful idol winners, and thats just concerning record sales and winning grammys. Non-winners like Daughtry, Aiken, Hudson (especially Hudson!) to name a few have outdone all the winners in my opinion. After 8 seasons, its obvious that 40 million votes and 25 million viewers doesn’t automatically turn into record sales. Its going to end up on what type of music these contestants put out.

I do think that the top 5 will at least get a contract for a first CD. The rest is up to them.

  • tinawina

No, I meant the non bottom dwellers were the most successful from their seasons, at least as far as a music career is concerned. My fault, I should have been clearer.

  • anubha

Ooh, Adam can do “Over the Rainbow” since it’s a showtune, Danny can sing an Il Divo song since they’re right in his melodramatic-sentimental-power-ballad “wheelhouse”. That leaves Leona Lewis for Kris or Allison, so Kris can continue to shop in the women’s department or Allison can rawk up a pop song. It all falls so neatly into place. I think you’re psychic, mandalay.

But seriously, I guess they’ll have a “Judges’ Choice”, plural, where all four judges conspire together to pick a song for the contestant.

  • AmandaRae2512

I fully expect the next two weeks to be a full-on blood bath. Simon is on a mission to get Kris and Allison out of the way stat! Simon will make sure whichever one survies to Top 3 will get the most horrible song ever and that Adam and Danny get amazing ones. BARF!

Simon’s been kind of wonky this season, praising Allison for her Aerosmith cover, which was alright, but cutting her down during some her more acclaimed performances, like this week’s “Someone to Watch Over Me”, so who knows which way he’ll be swinging next week. He did admit he was wrong this week!

Or maybe it’s a good thing that this week is Rock Week and the contestants can choose their own song(s) to prevent any blatant sabotage by the producers (example: the song Syesha was given by the producers last year…the penguin one). Kris/Allison have less of an uphill battle to both move on this way. I think…I hope? Fair is fun.

  • oceana

Season 2: Clay Aiken – None (but he was the Wildcard)

Clay was the wildcard, yes, but he was in the group of 8 with Kim Locke and Ruben, who were very strong too. Ruben went through, and it came down to Clay and Kim, and Kim advanced. So Clay was close to being voted in, and he was in a very tough group of 8. Other groups of 8 were not as strong as that one. Kim had a strong opening with Frenchie doing Band of Gold, it was a big hit in Hollywood rounds.

  • oceana

Clay Aiken has outdone Carrie and Kelly? I don’t think so. Not when it comes to sales, awards, or critical success. Clay had some success with his first cd but after that, not so much.

Which is why we must put the Go in Gokey, STAT! I think that with two songs, the Gokey will be much weaker next week. (lol @ my semi-homonym!) That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  • AmandaRae2512

Danny’s ok and Adam’s just aiight for me, but Kris and Allison have been my dream Final 2 for weeks now. So consistent each week and all with very little to no early air time, no pimping, no backstory, nothing but pure talent and consistency to pull them this far. It amazes me how many odds they have both defied over the weeks. What an awesome finale they would make. And getting there all on their own merit with no help from the judges or producers would make it even sweeter. Yes I realize I’m living in a dream world with that scenario, but it is fun to imagine.

  • SpencerB

    Allison AdamORKris finale= AWESOMENESS!!
Allison has been the most consistent of any idol this year, with no airtime before the semi’s. I just really hope she can shatter GOkey’s huge fanbase…

  • SpencerB

God. No matter what happens, this week (excluding Gokey’s shouting match with the audience, during which i will be in the bathroom or at the kitchen) will be pure awesomeness, as, at this point, everyone is soooo dang good… Allison and Kris need to hit it out of the park if they want to stay alive and get Gokey out.

  • oceana

Rock, Allison, Adam, Daughtry, it should be a fun week.

I don’t know who Slash is but I gather he’s from GnR. I never got into their music.

  • SpenserJ

    I completely agree.

Also – I wanted to post under you, so as to make it clear that we’re two different people LOL. I erroneously received credit for a funny that you made, and I don’t want to be stealing your thunder again :)

I don’t think there is any kind of bus coming for Allison.
She has always good critics from the judges, only Don’t Speak wasn’t as good but they focused mainly on her dress.

Kara and Randy have been consistent fans of hers, Kara has already said that she could write some songs for Allison and after last night performance, she even said she could see her in the finals (something no one said about Kris even after his best performances).
Randy is consistently a fan of teenage belters, he was always praising Archuleta and Jordin, he’s always the first with his “OMG she’s 16/17″ critic.

I agree that Simon is an enigma, I could see him going either way tuesday.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

SpenserJ (wasltp) the can only be one YOU!

It will be interesting to see if Slash can actually speak!! They should have gotten Ron Wood who would speak and we would have no idea what he said.

  • lavender1960

FYI They didn’t have a rock week theme per se last season but Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songs and Castro did Bob Dylan “Mr.Tambourine Man” and Bob Marley “I Shot the Sheriff” – neither song would I consider rock staples….and looking at the Wiki chart for JC I don’t think he did any song that was rock but his version of Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” was rock cool if not rock per se.

ETA Correction the Clapton version of I Shot the Sherriff would qualify as rock I suppose, the original is pure reggae mon.

  • AC

This is what I predict will be coming out of Simon- to Kris: Last week I said that I don’t think you can win the competition. This week, I think you can.

Don’t you notice that pattern with Simon?

I think that now that Adam is in the bottom 3, he will definitely make the finals. A lot of people seem to be splitting the votes between him and Kris/Allison and now they will probably only do Adam. I think Allison or Danny will be going home next week.

My other theory is that it will be a Adam vs Kris finale and the dramatic part of it is that both have been in the bottom before so who will win? I would really hate for it to be some type of culture clash finale because I don’t want politics involved with my entertainment!

  • lavender1960

Slash is actually a highly intelligent articulate dude, believe it or not. Don’t let the hair fool you.

I was never a big GNR fans but I’ve always been impressed by Slash in interviews – and love the Velvet Revolver stuff BTW. He is just behind David Bowie who is my fav guy to see interviewed because he almost always give good interview. Peeps should study him.

  • AmandaRae2512

She has always good critics from the judges, only Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Speak wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t as good but they focused mainly on her dress.

Well Simon laid into her last week saying she was just so-so (when she was quite wonderful!), and he questioned her confidence and all that. So yeah, I believe he is on a mission and will not stop until his chosen and pimped ones end up in the Finale. God, I feel like it’s Season 3 all over again where Fantasia was the annointed and holy one that no one should dare even try to compete against. Poor Diana got beat up pretty bad in the media and by the judges. I fear for whomever has to go against Adam that it will be same thing. That’s one reason I do not want Adam there. Let’s level the playing field a bit. Kris and Allison FTW!

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

“”"”I assume the reason they picked Slash instead of Axl is because Axl is batshit. “”"”"

Lol to this but I assume they chose Slash because he was on Daughtrys first CD with him?

(Golcook, I put that up earlier on pg 1 , I liked it!)

UH – no – Adam and Kris please? or Adam and Allison just not Danny

  • colette

OK, so let me ask you this: what is it what all the Gokey love? He doesn’t get a mad amount of it here or on any of the other couple boards I’ve perused. He’s a devout Christian, sure, but Kris is too.

I liked Danny a lot in the beginning — I love that Taylor/Michael MacDonald/Joe Cocker thing a LOT. But lately he’s really rubbed me the wrong way. Not much variety in his performances. And a lot of bluster otherwise. When Ryan asked him that stupid question last night about taking Simon’s advice, his answer was long-winded and indecipherable. He thanks his fan for “watching and voting for me at the same time.” (Enough to give anyone ADD) I don’t get the warmth there, and I do get a certain heavy tension that goes beyond the general stress of AI.

The wife stuff? I can’t fault him on that, and it has nothing to do with the show anymore. But I can only imagine the guy is still grieving, and it must be very weird to dive into this stuff so soon after her passing.

Anyway, I just wonder what the huge attraction is to Gokey. It does not appear to be waning.

  • CookorHubbyHmm

I would love for Adam to do some Queen. Simon would wet himself.

  • karenw

I’m looking forward to Rock Week

Perhaps Adam can sing “Love in an Elevator” whilst descending onto the stage in a glass elevator rather than a staircase

I would imagine if they’re singing two songs (prays they are) that we’ll get a ballad and an uptempo from each of them.

I wonder if Adam can incorporate any Bowie into Rock Week .. also Queen would be good.

The pressure must be on Adam and Alison to do well this week, being thier kind of genre.

  • bocketybee

Just occurred to me last night–Gokey reminds me of Jon Lovitz’s character in “The Wedding Singer”. =)

I’m betting Rock Week = pelvic thrusts and leering looks galore. *shudder*

Oh Collette, I HATE HATE HATE it when people say things about his wife, make fun of that part of him, say he fakes tears, etc. I am just NOT a fan of his singing style though I was ok with him last week, he bugs but I just think people should lose the attitude about his wifes passing

  • adamisthemanfan

I would love for Adam to do some Queen.

So would I..I’m dying to hear his complete rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody…andf btw his studio recording of Feelin Good is awesome…better than his performance I would say because he sings with more tenderness in some spots and does some great phrasing…
as far as song choices…there is so much he could do…
I agree that he should do a more upbeat, energetic performance and then tone it down…he could pull it off and win a lot of votes if he does it the right way…
I think he should do a Guns N’ Roses song (knocking on Heaven’s door, Welcome to the Jungle, etc..)
He could do a Lenny Kravitz song…it says on the AI website he is one of Adam’s fav male artists…he would KILL “American woman” but I’d prefer he’d do something more fun like Aerosmith’s “Dude looks a lady”
he could do “Mother” by John Lennon (there is a nice cover that Christina Aguilera did that’s on youtube..he could do something on the lines of that…)
he could do an AC/DC song…or that really cool Deep Purple song called “Smoke on the water” (there is a great cover of this song by Black Sabbath with some heavy guitars…really cool)…
I wish though, he could perform his original song “Crawl Through Fire” and them maybe do “Dust in the Wind” but a lot of ppl have already seen that so idk…

The other contestants I’m not really sure…Allison sounds good in any song so I’m not worried about her…she should do a Pink song…speaking of Pink..I really hope that she and Adam can do a duet of this song called “Misery” which Pink did with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith…they would sound awesome…
if you haven’t heard the song, check it out its really good…here is a link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaEkohQWhOk

Note: you have to wait a few seconds before it actually starts b/c there is some advertisement and then a few seconds of silence and then it starts…enjoy :) :thumbup_tb:

Ok, I am asking it, what in the heck is “hitting the seal”?

  • SpenserJ

Ok, I am asking it, what in the heck is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hitting the sealà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

Being in the bottom. Before the stools, the bottom 3 (or 2) stood on th stage, quite directly on the American Idol “seal” (emblem, logo, whatever) that was painted there.

Woo Hoo – I actually knew an answer!!

  • colette

Sumidol: I’m with you on that, and I’m just glad they’re not bringing DG’s wife into it anymore. I just wished I liked him better as an artist, and wondering where the allegience is coming from.

If he’s never “hit the seal” (why does that sound like something I should call the Humane Society about?), he could certainly win this. And I just can’t imagine he’ll be interesting enough as a recording artist to make it all work. Either my fave Kris, or Allison, or (I gotta admit) Adam would be a much more intruiging choice.

  • Tess

I’m becoming more and more convinced that Danny has this season wrapped up. You can’t fight intangibles and Danny is surrounded by those. In a way I do feel sorry for him, though, because even if he has the great voting block he doesn’t seem to have created a lot of buzz (You tubes, blog articles, searches, etc) that really help a winner once they hit the real world. As far as I can see A-A-K have developed this great buzz and internet hype which will carry through into print media, etc. I’d hate to be Danny performing at the AI concert after A-A-K have done their stuff. That kind of pressure will be intense.

  • Victoria

My other theory is that it will be a Adam vs Kris finale and the dramatic part of it is that both have been in the bottom before so who will win? I would really hate for it to be some type of culture clash finale because I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want politics involved with my entertainment!

Me too. Besides, I just like Adam and Kris. :tongue1_tb:

But, unfortunately, I think Danny’s got a real good shot at it. If it were the internet and the media voting, Adam would run away with the thing, but it’s not. I think Danny may have a very comfortable majority of casual voters because he is the sort of person AI has programmed them to vote for. Inexperienced, backstory, regular guy, sings well, not too out there.

  • cwg509

If I was one of the contestants, I’d rather have the chance that A-A-K have for post Idol success than Danny, even if he does win. So it is helpful for one of them to win, but by no means a death sentence at this point if they don’t.

If they are true to themselves, this week should not matter too much. I hope they can keep that in mind. It’s as good a top 4 as season 5.

  • bjesgirl

Dont care to see No Doubt perform.

But I’m pretty excited to hear Daughtry’s new song. I think it will automatically get a big debut, just because he’s so big. It mus be a lot of pressure on him after all that success. I just hope it’s good, and FAST. Enough with the power ballads already.

  • clearone

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d hate to be Danny performing at the AI concert after A-A-K have done their stuff. That kind of pressure will be intense.

Well if Danny wins, I’ll be leaving before the end of the concert. I would love to see Matt, Kris, Allison and Adam but I have no desire to see Danny sing, what 5 songs? No thank you very much.

  • Margaux

Rock week — time for Adam to give us the Queen (pun intended) we’ve all been waiting for. You know we want it. You know we’ll love it.

Danny: If you want my votes, you gotta show me you can do it without the cheese. Rat Pack was very good. The best song you could do is Elvis Costello’s cover of Nick Lowe’s “What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding”. If you can’t get that approved, how about some good ol Midwest boomer rock: Mellencamp – “Jack and Diane”, “Authority Song”, Bob Seger, Springsteen, something like “Hungry Heart”.

Kris: Some Tom Petty would go nice with your guitar “American Girl”, “Free Fallin”. Bon Jovi’s been done to death but we know they’ll approve it, and it usually works out well. Then #2 should be something very current, you know how to pick songs, I’m not worried there.

Allison: We expect the usual Heart and Benatar, and you would do them just fine. Look to my favorite Hispanic rock goddess, Ms. Linda Ronstadt — “It’s So Easy to Fall in Love” “You’re No Good”, or if you need a ballad “Blue Bayou”.

  • adamandeva

Has anyone been to Top Idol lately?! There reporting a rumor that the second song for the contestants will be duets! :jittery_tb:

  • AC

Is it weird that my absolute favorite is Kris but I want Adam to win? That being said I still don’t think Danny has a chance to win. For one, I think Kris, Adam, and Allison have the same fans that split votes between the three. I think now that Adam has been in the bottom 3 his fans would go crazy voting for him. Also, internet buzz does count for something since these contestants need hardcore fans to do well in the real world. I remember that the first few seasons I would check out the Idol forums and the number of posts kinda shows who the winner might be.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I love Adam and Allison, but I want Adam to win. I don’t think that’s odd. I guess I just see that scenerio working out for both of them. And please don’t tell me not to vote split. Maybe I’m rooting for Allie because she’s an underdog right now. I’ll vote Adam when it counts.

However, I will laugh my ass off if Gokey wins. OMG. Total FAIL for TBTB. I guess I am crystal balling here. Heh.

Nah, she’s had some pretty rough weeks intermittently, like the rest of them

Because the bulk of the AI watching/voting crowd doesnt spend that much time on internet boards, they just watch the show, and then vote, which for me isnt necessarrily a bad thing. He seems to be well liked among casual show watchers who are vital to votes, so…even though I dont like the dude..it is what it is

My sis likes him well enough, on his better days, and she doesnt spend any time on the internet, so would be surprised that people dont. Quite a few friends like him alot too, they only talk about Gokey and Adam, they didnt even remember the name of “the chick with pink hair”…its those things that will matter in the end for finale votes
