Sizing up the American Idol 10 Top 12 Girls

arrives at Idol Prom: The "American Idol" Season Ten Top 24 Debut event at the Roosevelt Hotel on February 24, 2011 in Hollywood, California.

Tonight, we see the Top 12 girls take the stage for the very first time in “live” competition. I’m going to say it right here and now…I think it’s about time a girl wins this competition again. I’m going to find a favorite and champion her!

See what I think of the girls at this stage of the game, after the jump. Leave YOUR thoughts in comments.

Ashthon Jones – Ashthon was able to manage “And I’m Telling You” pretty well when she sang it in Hollywood. Not sure she’s a compelling enough presence though. It’s hard to tell, she hasn’t had much screen time. She’ll have to nail it tonight to make an impact.

Haley Reinhart – Haley has a mature style for a teen.  She’s got some major pipes, and when she reigns in that big voice of hers, I like it.  Keep it simple Haley, and you’ll go far. It helps that the judges love her.

Julie Zorrilla – I wasn’t impressed with Julie’s audition. She’s got some weird affectations when she performs.  Maybe she’s used to performing with an instrument, because once she was behind her piano in Hollywood, I got why the judges loved her so much.  The spoilers say she biffed her performance Monday night, but I think the judges love her so much, they’ll put her in as a wild card if American doesn’t like her.

Karen Rodriquez – Karen’s got a big voice with a Latin flava. She’s a welcome addition to this group of girls.  I’ve liked her performances so far. If she can bring it to the stage tonight, she’s definitely got a shot.

Kendra Chantelle – Kendra benefited from being paired up with a popular boy, Paul McDonald, in Las Vegas.  She’ got a sweet singer-songwritery type of vocal, but I’m not sure she has enough charisma to make it on her own on the Idol stage.

Lauren Alaina –  Lauren is like a cross between Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. She’s got pipes and personality. She’s only 16, but seems a lot older. She’s definitely one to watch.  She’s a lock for the Top 12/13.

Lauren Turner –  It’s a little early for me to declare a favorite, but I have a feeling Lauren Turner is going to be it. Love love love her big bluesy voice.  Spoiler reports say she did very well on the big stage Monday night–with the judges comparing her to Amy Winehouse. If she’s that good tonight, she’s got a shot to advance.

Naima Adedapo –  Naima’s quirky look has proven to be more interesting than her singing so far. The spoilers reveal that she’ll sing “Summertime”,  a song many consider to belong to Season 3 winner Fantasia. I don’t think she’ll do herself any favors with that one.

Pia Toscano – Pia has been little seen so far, but the few glimpses we’ve gotten of her reveal a polished and talented singer. She’s got the pimp spot tonight, so expect her to make the Top 12. I’m smelling dark horse.

Rachel Zevita – Rachel is adorable, quirky and all over the place.  If she doesn’t hit it out of the ball park tonight, she’s going to have trouble advancing. Yet, I find her intriguing and find myself rooting for her–she’s shown some real flashes of talent in the moments we’ve seen her in this competition.

Tatynisa Wilson – Tatynisa has barely had any screen time, and what little we saw, she was forgetting her words.  She’s fodder, I’m afraid. She’s going to have to make an impression tonight to stay in the game.

Thia Megia – She’s barely 16, but she’s been singing for years. She’s known to many, having competed on America’s Got Talent a few years ago. She’s already got a fan base, so I’ll be really surprised if she doesn’t advance. I find her singing polished, but affected and robotic.

I think my girl favorites are Naima (love her), Ashthon, and Karen. I’m just so so on the others.

From what I’m hearing, the producers/Jimmy are assigning them songs. I think some curve balls are being thrown to keep some promising people from outshining producer favorites or for them to get unjustly criticized on song choice.

  • tinawina

I have to say that after watching the final Sing For You Life performances posted yesterday, I finally get Pia. I liked her before but found her a bit generic. But MAN, that girl has pipes. Right now she’s pretty but looks vaguely reminiscent of Fergie to me. I want to see the stylists get to her and help her find a more distinct look. Still, she can sing… pure, powerful, clear voice. Note perfect. She is definitely one to watch, I can see her sneaking up on people.

Lauren A is hated on the boards but I kinda like her tacky, brassy self. She can sing and she has loads of personality. If she can tone down the mean girl vibes and bring the fun and sassy I could get behind her.

I’ve already raved before about liking Karen’s energy. That is still true. I need her to distinguish herself somehow but I like her.

Still like Naima. I like her vibe and she’s a good singer. I also like Julie… but I don’t know if she’s knows how to pick songs that suit her voice yet. Ditto Ashton, who seems to pick cheesy songs.

Everyone else I’m going to need to see tonight. This field is wide open to me. I can’t say I dislike any of them except maybe run-o-riffic mumbler Haley (though her Sing for Your Life song was actually great) and Tatynisha, who is just there for no reason.

Can’t wait to see how this one shakes out.

  • Owlgirl

I’m hoping to find a girl I can really get behind too. I have fairly positive feelings about most of them, except Lauren Alaina, who I find insufferable, and Ta-Tynisa, who seems like canon fodder.

I’m looking forward to Lauren Turner, Pia, and Rachel the most, but I’m hoping there are some pleasant surprises too.

  • primeminister

I think it’ll come down to Lauren A and Pia at the end (well, at least the Top 5). Rooting for Pia.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

    My picks:
    Haley Reinhart
    Lauren Alaina
    Thia Megia
    Kendra Chantelle
    Pia Toscano
    Julie Zorilla/Karen Rodriguez

Jueli reminds me of Rachel from Glee when she sings, I’m not sure if I like her.

I think it’s about time a girl wins this competition again. I’m going to find a favorite and champion her!

A girl should have won last year!

  • jasmaree

My girl favorites are Naima, Ashton, Julie, Pia, and Kendra. That would be the ultimate top 5. I don’t think Julie is going to make it though. The spoilers seemed to show that she didn’t do very well, and she hasn’t gotten much exposure. Of course Lauren Alaina will be in. She’s gotten so much exposure and fan-fare. I think she’s overrated, though. Thia is sure to get through this round too. She’s already got soooo many fans. IMO, her voice is weak. So I think the actual Top 5 will be Lauren A., Thia, Pia, Kendra, and Naima.

  • AllenTX

girls are much prettier than the boys.

  • MayMirabella

From what I’m hearing, the producers/Jimmy are assigning them songs. I think some curve balls are being thrown to keep some promising people from outshining producer favorites or for them to get unjustly criticized on song choice.

I am reading that in a few articles from people who were at the tapings. And one article said some things the contestant said were edited out of last night’s show where apparently Jordan says his song was offered to him and he was encouraged to sing this ( meaning vocal coaches or producers or someone thought this was a good song choice for him ). It did seem bizarre as Jordan quickly agreed with the judges that this was the wrong song choice and it was not him. So it got me wondering if Jordan was so sure of this, why did he sing this…so it would make sense that someone wanted and urged him and encouraged to sing this. I wonder if that will happen with some of the girls. As it does seem obvious the producers have their favorites and want them to succeed.

Having said that, then it is odd that Jordan did not object when a producer or vocal coach or anyone else told him to do this song. As we have seen him say No quite easily and be picky about things. Jordan should have just said No to the song and protested it instead of just doing it as he sealed his fate of going home by going along with it.

Can the contestants say No to a Producer or vocal coach or mentor who suggests or assigns them a certain song, I would think they can or at least protest and give reasons why?

MJ Are you having a pool this year? When does it start?

  • Valentin432

So far, I think Pia, Rachel, Haeley, Karen, Lauren A and T have the most potential.

I don’t get the love for Naima, she’s looks over substance IMO, Tatinysa and Ashton are not good enough for what they are trying to be, it’s too bad that Julie isn’t a little bit better than she is, Thia reminds me of Jasmine Trias and IA that Kendra is missing some charisma.

For this week, based on spoilers
3 of my top 6 are locks (Pia, Lauren A and T), I hope 2 of the other 3 make it and the other is picked as a WC.

I’m going to say it right here and now…I think it’s about time a girl wins this competition again. I’m going to find a favorite and champion her!

    Yay MJ!!!

  • MayMirabella

I like Lauren Turner, Pia, Ashton, Naima, and Karen..but I do not have any real favorites yet. I am just looking forward to these girls to see how they do.

  • MayMirabella

I am hoping for a lot of diversity in the top 12 on singing styles and also it would be good it that diversity extended in other ways as well. I would love to see that and that each of the singers is unique and different from the other. I think that is my fondest wish and for a girl to win.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

From those that reported being at the taping, Julie tanked her song. I’m thinking that since she was pimped so hard prior, she’s a w/c lock. Again, from those reports, Pia had a great performance. Taking all of that into account, and not seeing the broadcast, I’d pick:

Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriquez, Lauren Turner are all pros and should advance.

Thia Megia has a great voice, existing fan base, and the shiny novelty of youth, so she’s in.

That leaves a fight for the fifth slot and at this point, it’s a toss up. I would like to see Rachel Zevita make it in, but it’s tight at this point. I’m fairly certain that Tatynisha is fodder, but the rest will depend on tonights show.

With the women having what seems like a tighter grouping in that middle tier of the competition, I think that the w/c slots will go to two women and one of the men.

(edit: change to Turner from Alaina, got my Laurens mixed up)

  • 10DogMom

MayMirabella – that’s exactly what I was thinking about Jordan. He definitely got handed a bus ticket, but as assertive as he was in Hollywood, I can’t feel too sorry for him getting flattened. If you think you’re all that, dude, than you should have made sure you got a song you felt was right for you. Too bad, so sad.

SO looking forward to Lauren Turner tonight. Have liked her since Hollywood when she said she only got an hour sleep and sounded like hell, then went out and belted it.

  • emmuzka

I’m guessing that Lauren A, Kendra, Pia, Naima and Julie will go through, if only becouse they are the only ones that I can actually remember. And even then I keep mixing Kendra with that other light brown haired girl. The J-lo impersonator girl?

When the producers chose only commercially safe looking girls, it leads to a situation where a casual viewer can’t tell them apart. And that does not bode well for a girl winner this year.

  • claudette

Jessica Cunningham was on chat last night she said she actually really liked Lauren A. I think she’s just an outgoing 16 year old who isn’t afraid of being herself. I’m in the minority, but I can’t help but really like her. Plus, all 3 judges like her and think she’s sweet, cute and personable so I don’t see where all the hate comes from. Ha, I always like the contestants that come with a lot of hate but they usually go far.

But I really have to watch tonight. After last night’s show which showcased a wide diversity of talent and tempo, I just hope it’s not so bland that they run together.

Just for the fun of it, and based on fans and media, I think the final 2 will be Pia and Casey. But I’m excited about tonight. I don’t really know Lauren T and Karen.

  • bmms

    Rooting for Pia.

Me too! And all my votes will only be for Sweet P.

  • bmms

I have to say that after watching the final Sing For You Life performances posted yesterday, I finally get Pia. I liked her before but found her a bit generic. But MAN, that girl has pipes. Right now she’s pretty but looks vaguely reminiscent of Fergie to me. I want to see the stylists get to her and help her find a more distinct look. Still, she can sing… pure, powerful, clear voice. Note perfect. She is definitely one to watch, I can see her sneaking up on people.

I love Pia. But I don’t see Fergie in her not even a smidge, lol. Fergie is cute but I don’t think she’s pretty at all, while Pia is gorgeous. In the Idols recaps, most comments are that she may be the dark horse of the season.

  • BootStar

I went back and listened to all those full performances from the top 12 without watching so I wouldn’t know who was singing when and it was pretty eye opening. Pia and Lauren Turner stood out by a mile for me. Surprisingly underwhelming? Lauren Alaina.

I think I’m on Team Pia this season. She’s gorgeous, speaks well and has an amazing voice. I hope America doesn’t hate her New York accent. Northeast, you need to vote!

PS I really liked Naima and Kendra too, but I’m not sure they’re going to appeal to as wide an audience as Pia. We need a winner who sells records for a change.

  • Mark

I’m still pulling for Rachel. She’s maybe the one person this year who actually makes me interested in what she’s going to do musicially. And I might buy what she puts out.

I want to like Pia, because so many people I respect do and she seems to have a shot but she still reads as bland to me without being otherwise endearing. Hoping she changes my mind, but her choice of song, while a great, beautiful song, doesn’t do her favors in that regard.

  • cheese

My problem with Pia is that she looks like Kara and kind of sings like Kat. Kara McPia. Maybe she’ll grow on me.

I’m rooting for Rachel because she seems like the person least likely to sing songs that I hate, she’s weird, and I really liked her (slightly schizo) performance of “Speechless.” She’s probably shooting herself in the foot with her song choice tonight (sort of the anti-pageant bot song) and she does not appear to be a favorite of any of the judges, so I guess she’s a no for the top 13.

I do think that everyone but Ta Tynisa, Rachel and maybe Kendra has a fair shot at making it through votes or WC. It seems more wide open than the guys’ side of the competition.

  • LoveDaRocker

    “Owlgirl:
I’m hoping to find a girl I can really get behind too.”
Wrong website, I am afraid …

  • jammasta

Lauren Turner, Lauren Alaina, Pia Toscano, Thia Megia, and Naima Adedapo are the ones to watch for me.

Too early to be definite about them. As much as I keep saying guy’s year, we haven’t seen as much of some of these girls. I hope people won’t be rooting for a girl just because one hasn’t won lately.

At least 3 girls had more winning potential than last year’s winner. I hope if a girl wins, it’s someone who actually has as much winning potential as the guys, or more. We don’t need a repeat of last year. At least I don’t want one, anyway.

  • Mtlfan

I’m pulling for Rachel, i think she stands out because she’s original artistically. My other fav is Pia. I like Lauren Turner too.
Naima, Tatinysa and Thia are the ones I wouldn’t like to see advancing. Too generic imo.
The other girls I didn’t named are very good too; I want to see more.

  • guiaoshi

Agree with eveything that ou said MJ.
My favorites so far are Lauren Turner, Lauren Alaina, Pia, Haley and Rachel.

  • mymagoogle

Half of the spoiled song choices are smack-the-forehead doozies. Reiterating the obvious.
Listening (not watching) the snippets of performances so far, most of the girls are various flavors of a Big Voice. I honestly couldn’t pick one out versus another other than by the flavor.
My favorite among the girls is Rachel because her timbre is different, she can belt the high note along with the belters if needed, and has incredible range. I don’t know if she is too quirky for Peoria, but I don’t really care.
Incidentally, my usual guide for what will play in Peoria is my admin, and she hasn’t watched any episodes this year.

  • wonderings

I’d really, really love a woman to win this year.
    ((Sorry Thia and Lauren A))

Rooting for Lauren T. (big strong voice, but also seems to be able to emotionally connect with her material) and Rachel (quirky, likeable, great range, great style, cool taste in music, knows idol well!) tonight, but I’m interested to see full performances from all.

My faves are Lauren A,Thia,HALEYYY,ashton, and rachel

claudette Jessica Cunningham was on chat last night she said she actually really liked Lauren A. I think she’s just an outgoing 16 year old who isn’t afraid of being herself. I’m in the minority, but I can’t help but really like her.

My wife loves Lauren A. I even told her that she sings country. Doesn’t matter she just likes her sassy, free-spirit attitude.

  • LoveDaRocker

Rooting for Pia, Julie, Kendra, Ashton, and Karen. Wishing that Lauren A. goes home.

  • http://www.groupon.com/r/uu4472596 tammyinohio

I’ve never split votes so all my votes go to Pia. If for some reason she doesn’t make it then I’ll vote for Lauren A.

  • Esqt

I like Pia, Naima, and Julie (vocally). But I have a feeling that Thia will surprise me, ala James/Jacob tonight. :)

  • AZIdolFan

for no other reason other than having straight dark hair I keep confusing Julie and Pia. and I kinda like both of them.

I don’t like Haley. I don’t understand what she is singing. and I’m not fond of Thia either. very robotic.

so far from what I’ve heard I like Lauren Turner. haven’t liked what I’ve heard from Lauren A.

Karen is ok as long as she is not doing any runs. And I’m not digging Rachel at all. (my 12 yo niece was so surprised she made top 12 girls!)

Naima, Ashton, Kendra and Tatynisa are all going to have to prove themselves tonight.

I’m making no prediction cause last night I was waaaaaaaaaay off. :)

  • St.Lucia

For the first time in a long time I’m intrigued by quite a few girls. Hopefully they can manage to hold up some steam.

I find myself drawn to Lauren T., Karen, Kendra, Pia, and Ashton. They intrigue right now to say the least. Looking forward to hearing them perform tonight. :)

  • HR

Ashthon, Karen and Rachel are the ones I have liked until now. Unlike the guys I don’t have a clear feel for how they may perform tonight so that could change.

With the exception of Lauren A and Rachel the guys personalities are more interesting to talk about but I do not want want another male to win this year. There have been 4 male winners in the last 5 years. It’s time to switch it up.

  • Grammie Kari

Now, I am unsure. Did the girls pick their own songs or did Jimmy assign them? I got the impression that Jordon was given Usher’s song and that he would never pick it. It’s not him; not his style. So, let’s see how this turns out.

  • wonderings

My problem with Pia is that she looks like Kara and kind of sings like Kat. Kara McPia. Maybe she’ll grow on me.

Love this description, cheese. Perhaps the promise of unlimited soup or salad and breadsticks will win people over.

  • samgamgee

I like Haley, she’s quirky and I love the raspiness in her voice. She can cross over to rock. Pia seems too “diva” for my taste. lol
