Site Outage – Bitch at Me Here!

I’m going to write a little bit more about what happened last night…but I’m going to work on getting today’s headlines thread up first.

If anybody was madly refreshing trying to get to my site since last night…I apologize for the inconvenience and will work to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

I’m a little upset with my hosting company right now.   Looks like their systems are not redundant, which for a hosting company, is really effed up.

They had to replace a key piece of equipment last night, and for some reason their SLA with whoever manages their hardware doesn’t appear to be top notch (hey you have to pay money for that, time to cough it up!)Â   So they had to wait for maintenance….blah blah blah….

Ugh.

The entire outage was about 19 hours.   The company’s ENTIRE infrastructure went down, which is crazy.   Again. Hello, redundant systems? So they couldn’t even email updates to customers.   I was really worried.   And then, when I woke up this morning, I went totally bat-sh*t when the site still wasn’t up.

I finally found a thread on a 3rd party webhosting forum where customers where huddled, fretting.   There are peeps who are running huge operations on their websites, and they lost money today.

Anyway, they had warned me that there might be a little bit of down time this week, but only at night, and only for a few hours at most.

    MJ, you have no idea what you’ve reduced me to! I quit smoking almost 8 years ago and never I mean NEVER craved the damn things again, not once! Last night was okay, but this morning OMG you actually had me running from forum to forum looking for that elusive clip (butt)left in the ashtray. I even requested my password at a message board I hadn’t logged in on since 2005! It didn’t help. It was like offering a Fuji to a Dasani drinker! Welcome back!

    Glad you’re back. I figured it must be server-related, but that certainly didn’t make it any less nerve wracking for you! Meanwhile, I squandered my work time on election poll sites. As much as I hated math as a kid, I sure can’t seem to stay away from numbers anymore, idol-related or otherwise.

    BTW, hugs! Server outages are the horrible.

    Change hosts, these guys are scr*wed. If not for this, then for something similar their butts are going to be sued off; and they don’t have the competence to deal with it, which puts your site, with its multiple years of history, at risk. Find a new vendor, break your old contract, and if they fuss, remind them that you have a very good case to be the one that sues their butts off (I bet you cash money that the fine print of your original contract contains some language about service levels that this lameness violated).
