We all knew this, but Simon Cowell recently elaborated on why hiring Paula Abdul for the X Factor USA panel was a mistake:

“I think there was too much history with me and Paula,” Cowell told TV Guide. “I adore her… but it just felt like that relationship was too steeped in American Idol history.

“With these shows, you can never be complacent. Whenever we choose a panel, you’ve got to be interesting and you’ve got to know what a star is.”

Cowell’s fellow panelist LA Reid added: “I think Simon really nailed it. In the time that I’ve spent with both Britney and Demi, I’m impressed with their ability to really identify greatness and talent.”

Simon didn’t think Paula was interesting? As far as identifying a star–Simon saddled Paula with the groups. She made the mistake of eliminating those young brothers that, I think, would have gone over big with the girls. But I think she did the best she could in a tough category.

Perhaps Britney and Demi will be able to identify talent that is relevant to the current musical client better than Paula could. We’ll see.

I also enjoyed Paula being on X-Factor.  She seemed to really care but needed more to work with.  I had even thought she would be a good Host for the show.  Dumb Simon, it wasn’t her fault.

After the TV critics rip season 2′s premiere to shreds, Simon can say goodbye to his 20 mill per episode dreams forever (those viewers remaining will be just hardcore loyal Britney stans).
