Apologies for the clip. The sound is out of sync, but it’s worth watching anyway. Simon Cowell’s girlfriend Terri Seymour asks him who he thinks will pull off Mariah Carey week. Yes, this coming week Mariah Carey will be the mentor, and the theme is HER SONGS and only her songs. YIKES!

Anyway. Simon tells Terri that he thinks it’s a real opportunity for Carly Smithson. Terri then spills the beans. She tells Simon that Carly told her that she’s planning on performing the song he suggested for her in an interview.

Carly will be singing Mariah Carey’s “Without You”.

Carly: PLEASE LOVE ME DADDY! Maybe Simon will finally be pleased with Carly and she’ll be a happy, happy girl at last.

Oh, and Paula has a suggestion for the boys if they want to hit those high notes. But you have to check out the video And take the poll! after the jump. Oh that Paula!

  • poporange

To all the blog as witnesses PJ owes me a beer if Carly gets major aculades from the judges. Randy “Says Dawg you are back” Simon says “great song choice” The girl I hpe does not scare me this week….

I wonder how much Miraih will out cleavage Paula?

  • trudi

PLEASE LOVE ME DADDY! sums it up perfectly.

  • skylight1219

Here’s to hoping that sweet daddy loves her, and, then she can go home after that.

  • 4got

Not good. I fear for Surly. That piece of news is going to be chewed and spat out by all the non-Carly fans.

  • skylight1219

    Backlash!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

LMAO, Paula. I’d have voted for Jason but saw that Simon was included in the poll…haha.

  • http://randomlyyoursbouffe.blogspot.com/ Bouffe

I would really like TPTB to give me back the 20 minutes it took me to listen to all those garbage songs. Ugh.

  • Ladybug

Hey! You didn’t give us this choice:

o The People Who Pour Stuff Into the Coke Cups

As to Carly and the spoiler. RUH ROH!!

  • J.S.G.

High expectations are the kiss of death in this competition. I think the belters are really going to have problems meeting those expectations

Worse yet, after her performance this week, next year’s fund raising show is going to be called Idol Gives Mariah her voice back.
Not yet 40 years old and her voice is ruined from all those high notes on big stages.

And Mariah is going to be coaching these kids on how to sing. That’s a scray thought.

  • gabam

It will be interesting to see how Carly does with the songs and what Simon will say.

I think that the ones benefiting from Paula’s help with picking songs will be the other contestants she does not help. She made a bad song choice for Elliott for Final 3. It was as if she had not been listening to him all season. So many songs to choose and she made that choice. Oh boy! As he said, he did the best that he could with it.

Has anyone won AI who had to sing the song Paula picked for Final 3?

  • sciencefan

All I can think of is Carly screaming her way through the song. I’m cringing already.

  • primeminister

Carly: PLEASE LOVE ME DADDY! Maybe Simon will finally be pleased with Carly and sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be a happy, happy girl at last.

Yeah, this is basically what it comes down too. Carly’s so desperate to please Simon, I find it almost sickening. Please your fans, girl! They are the ones who are going to buy your music, not Simon- he made it clear that he’d only listen to DCook. lol

  • bambambam

Hm. Maybe they are putting out disinformation to keep fans from suggesting the right songs for each contestant in forums like this.

Brooke, please sing “Music Box,” the title song of Mariah’s third (?) studio album. Quiet, sweet and not over the top.

  • baxter

If Jason sings…Touch My Body…I will vote for him!!!

  • cheese

Excuse me, bax, you’ll do what?

I don’t find it that surprising that judges occasionally make a suggestion to contestants (they probably saw the judges more than usual last week what with the show being on every day all.the.time. for IGB). I’m just sad that they didn’t spoil a more interesting contestant’s song choice.

Since Simon picked it for her, Carly will probably get the pimp spot and a tonguebath even if she massacres it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I’m not particularly excited for Carly to sing this. I’ve grown to like Carly because I apparently enjoy her singing a lot when done in the lower register. Her Here You Come Again is one of my AI7 favorite recordings.

  • KrazeeK120

gabam: No, no contestant has gone on to win after having Paula pick his/her song on Top 3 night. Seems to be the kiss of death.

I’m pretty scared this week. I’m afraid that Carly & Syesha will over-do it, and the rest will be unimpressive.

I really hope I’m wrong…here’s to hoping that David C. and Jason will be fabulous!!!

  • primeminister

David Cook will be fabulous- I think he has the vocal chops and artistic creativity to pull of a MC song (and beat Syesha/Carly at their own game).

I have faith in DCook! :)

  • Caffiend

purple, Carly’s Here You Come Again is wonderful. I also love her studio version of Come Together. I don’t love the song, but her vocals are amazing.

I loved both, too — Carly sounds great in both genres. She’s got a really high recording voice compared to her live voice, though. Oh well; I can live.

ETA: Okay, I find it funny how Archie’s got more than three times the votes on that poll over Cookie. No surprise about Jason and Cowell, though. LOL.

    Tsk, tsk! :laugh_tb:

I can’t even imagine Jason attempting a song like that, it would be so awkward and weird.

  • Natasha

Oh boy. ‘Please love me Daddy’ is right. If Simon doesn’t sing Carly’s praises this week he never will. Either way, it could be ugly.

I’m a little worried for the dudes this week. Not so much Archie but what is Jason going to come up with? And after last week’s debacle I’m really crossing my fingers for Cook. After ‘Hello’ and ‘Billie Jean’ I’m half in love with the guy.

  • primeminister

I know what you mean. After rewatching all of DCook’s performances over again, I have to say that this guy is undeniably amazing. He has to win. One more solid performance from him and I’ll be a bigger fan than Sarah and cheese. LOL.

ETA: I went ahead and downloaded his other recordings. lol. Fantastic!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

LOL! Anyway, I’ve got confidence in him to knock it out of the park next week. After knowing perfectly well how much he effed up on “Innocent”, he will most definitely step it up. Plus, it’d be hilarious if he gave an amazing performance and Syesha and Carly, the two slated to have great performances for next week, fell flat on their faces. They’re just probably going to get major pimpage no matter how much Syesha imitates the Mariah hand and how many times Carly pulls her angry face. Sigh.

  • esp

I am wondering what songs the guys can choose. Simon has criticized guys when they have chosen a female vocalist’ song before and now they have to sing Marah songs. And “Without You” is only a Mariah cover of Harry Nilsson’s hit. Does anyone have any ideas what David Cook might be singing?

  • joydrop

Maybe DC can come up with a cool arrangement of “Fantasy”? lol

I really have no idea, but I’m looking forward to this week, it should be entertaining one way or another.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

Cookie’s probably going to come up with his own arrangement for something. Hopefully, anyway. I honestly can’t picture him singing any Mariah song the way she did it — plus, a performance like that from him would just totally creep me out.

  • Diana

I barely know any Mariah songs — can’t think of ONE I even like. Ew.

What on earth is Jason going to sing??? This is an unfair test.

  • 4got

How about ‘My All’ for Jason?

    My All

Good words to end the competition with? Unfair to have Her Royal Shrillness Mariah on this show. What can she teach the idols except how to bare their bodies to boost sales!

Jason can do his Tarzan imitation.

  • joydrop

Mariah is like this year’s Gwen Stefani or something. I don’t get how they pick these stupid mentors.

  • marco5ny

Think there will be any comparisons between Carly’s version of “Without You” and the one from Clay Aiken? I assume that David Archuleta will sing “I’ll be There.” David Cook could do “Fantasy” and bring out the Tom Tom Club sample just like Syeshe could do “Emotion” and spotlight the “Best of My Love” sample. No doubt Kristy will do “Hero.”

I realize it’s cool to trash Mariah as sugary pop but people obviously like her music. And I’m one of them. Personally I can’t wait! The evening has potential to be very interesting.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I also really like Come Together. I kinda like Bandzilla on that. I always play that track when I’m (not) driving in really heavy, bumper to bumper traffic. I bop my head to it, too, and the irritated (with the traffic; not with me, I hope, lol) truck drivers beside me give me these “WTF-is-making-you-so-happy?” stares. LOL

I also recently started to really like David. I listened to his studio versions and thought them very good. I also just found out from Facebook that my current life theme song (yikes!) is Eleanor Rigby so I had been humming that a lot. Heh.

Now that Michael is gone, I’m channeling some of my abundant love to David. Jason is still my main (daydreaming) boy, of course. ;)

  • manny

Well since Carly is doing one of Mariah’s covers they are obviously allowed. I wonder if DCook is spooked after last week and will play it safe with “Bringin on the Heartbreak”.

  • xoxoyc

After listening to all the studio recordings and the group ones from Idol Gives Back I’m kind of hoping for a David Cook/Carly final 2. They are both such mature performers and extremely talented. They could both do “current” stuff and they have actual emotion behind their singing. They would be a great final 2- IMO- their parts during the group songs on Idol gives back blew the roof off the place. VERY GOOD. Their recording voices are awesome. Carly’s Here You Come Again and David’s Hello are my favorite studio tracks.

I’d like to see Carly, Cook, Brooke, and Jason Castro in the final 4. Brooke also has potential to be top 2 but she has to redeem herself from the last few weeks.

I think #3 would be a good spot for Jason. He’s definitely talented but has a ways to go before he could be a superstar.

The other 3 can go home whenever.

Still not voting this year- it’s much better for me not to be invested.

  • grrrr

    How about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹My Allà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ for Jason?

    My All

Hmm…I can see that. And I’m sure this sounds nuts, but I think David Cook could do a great job with it.

  • cheese

    grrrrr!

“My All” seems to be the song of choice among the Cooktards (of which I am one). I can’t really see Jason sexing it up, but that would certainly be unexpected. I have my heart set on this one, so I will cry if DC comes out singing that dumb Def Leppard song. I tried to listen to some Mariah songs and thought the best part was the Tom Tom Club sample in “Fantasy.”

I really like your final 4 xoxo. If only David A would please go home. Maybe he will try to do a straight cover of “Touch My Body” this week?

  • Michelle

If only David A would please go home. Maybe he will try to do a straight cover of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Touch My Bodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this week?

Now THAT! would be disturbing :D (but worth it if Archie goes)

  • grayhound

I am apparently a Cooktard as well….I kinda like that name.

I actually love the Def Deppard song, but that might cause Simon to say it is indulgent. On the other hand, I think he could do a great job with that song.

BUT – is it Mariah’s number 1′s, or any song she has recorded? I think that is the question.

  • grrrr

I think it would be a good choice because he could lay enough angst on that one to make it convincing. In any case, I’ll have to rely on YouTube this week since I’m going on a trip Tues. to Central America.
Haha, Cooktards! I’m well on my way to Cooktardsville, for sure. I’m actually looking forward to the tour this year.
Oh, did anyone see the most recent backstage pictures on the Ofishul Shite? That Popeye shirt is beyond aweshum- I need one for myself. :lol_wp:

  • Steph

ok, stupid question: which def leppard song???

    Cooktard – I love this!

i have total confidence in DC this week too. i think he learned a hard lesson last week. he seemed very dissappointed in himself last week. it was sad.

i agree that it would be TOO funny if he knocks it out of the park while the girls fall on their faces.

Why the fuck are they doing MC songs?!? i just don’t get it!

ETA: Without You is a tough song. I like Carly inspite of the scary makeup, anger, and desperation. I hope she can pull it off. I would love to see her in the finale instead of Archie

  • grayhound

steph: Bringing on the Heartbreak. Looooove this song…………

    grrr…: Cooktardsville! good one.

  • cheese

I think my hate of Def Leppard stems from them being very popular at a time in my life when I was locked in my bedroom in the dark listening to the Smiths.

Anyway, I hope DC does an actual Mariah ballad this week instead of the more predictable Def Leppard song. I think I like “Always Be My Baby” for Jason (or maybe “Butterfly” if he can get actual butterflies to flutter around him while he sings). I can see KLC and Archie duking it out for “Hero” and I can see me throwing things at my TV no matter which one sings it.

  • grayhound

    Hero = dulldom.

    I. will. vomit.

I hope whatever DC sings he has a great week. The aftertaste of last week belongs in the rear view mirror.

  • GeminiDolly

I wonder what Jason is thinking right now??? Poor dude. I hope he doesnt suck the worst. C’mon KLC, come through for me.

I’m not sure I understand why people are questioning Mariah Carey as a mentor. I’m not a huge fan of hers or anything, but I like some of her songs. I do understand why she has been chosen as a mentor, though.

-She has had the most number 1 songs of any solo artist, ever.
-She has had longevity in the music industry.
-She has a good voice…I mean, the woman can hit notes that human beings just shouldn’t be able to. Like her style of music or not, she truly has a special gift with that voice!

This week will be challenging for the contestants, for sure. It will force a lot of them outside their “boxes” and we’ll get to see how creative they REALLY are. Should be interesting.

  • bambambam

There is a great song called Vanishing on the first Mariah album that could work out for David C. like “Hello” but will the relative newness of the song make it go over people’s heads like the Our Lady Peace song?

Also, Vision of Love was really a retro-rock/soul fusion that’s just about a sideways re-write of “Oh! Darling” by the Beatles. So it’s not stretching much to use a guitar on that one.

  • Steph

    KrazeeK120:

I think MC will be a fine mentor. She is a GREAT singer. I just question the decision to have the idols sing only her songs after idols have been told TIME after TIME not to sing diva songs (esp. MC) – the comparison factor that Simon mentions so often. However, I think the idols may have great opportunity to break out of the box this week. I am cautiously optimistic.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

BWAH! That would be awesome. :)

We definitely have quite a few Cooktards (LOVE THAT!) here. My love for him knows no bounds. DYDC!!!

I just question the decision to have the idols sing only her songs after idols have been told TIME after TIME not to sing diva songs (esp. MC) – the comparison factor that Simon mentions so often.

I agree. That is my problem with the theme as well. I don’t think it’s a problem to have Mariah as a mentor at all. But when they tell people all.the.time not to sing Mariah songs, then have a theme featuring said songs, that makes them hella hypocritical.

Carly is like that cold that won’t go away. I started out not liking her, then liked her, then went back to not liking her, and now I kinda like her again. No worries, my votes belong solely to our DCook, but damn if I wouldn’t be pleased with a DC/Carly finale. I just want to hear them sing a duet. Now plz! LOL.

I have absolutely no idea what any of them should sing this week. I’m not a Mariah Carey fan in the least, though I can acknowledge that she’s talented.

  • xoxoyc

Sarah: A David Cook/Carly duet would be AWESOME! I really don’t see her making it past top 4 but I can dream right?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I agree, XO. Like you, I was really impressed with both of them in the IGB group songs. They both have impressive lower ranges, but can belt the hell out of a song too. Maybe there will be a duet on tour. All I can do is hope. :)

I also hope there’s also a manband again on tour this year. All of the guys play instruments (I think… does Chikezie play anything?), so it could happen!

If Carly can start picking up steam, I think she could possibly go beyond top 4. But at the same time, I think her votes would go to DC when she left, so I kinda don’t want her to last. LOL. I’m so selfish. ;)

  • primeminister

    does Chikezie play anything?

    harmonica. LOL

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LOL, Primeminister. That’s right, I forgot about the harmonica.

  • joydrop

I hope someone sings “Heartbreaker” so I can fall over laughing at how horrible it is! haha!

I’m seriously looking forward to this week. I think that even though it’s completely hypocritical (the judges telling them never to sing Whitney/Mariah/Celine/etc. and then forcing them to), like someone said earlier, it’s going to force them out of their comfort zones. I think it will force the boys to be especially creative with their songs, and it should be good.

Cooktard! HA! Does that make me a Castrotard?

  • iloveoliver

I googled MC’s #1 hits and WY is not on that list. I thought I read somewhere that it was only her #1 hits.

Go Jason. These guys there work cut out form them. A lot of arrangements will need to be made to accommodate their voices to hers.

  • jodeb

Everyone is always told not to try and sing Whitney, Mariah and Celine and now they *have* to sing her songs?

How two-faced is that? And why am I even asking about the most two-faced show in existence?

And how will the three boys fare trying to sing Mariah with her supposedly 8 octave voice? Forget Brook and Jason (who are both charming) since I don’t think they have 2 octave voices.

This may be the messiest week of all. However, my addiction forces me to watch, lol.

  • sciencefan

I agree with you, purplesmile. Carlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s rendition of Here You Come Again was very original à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ did anyone else ever slow it down like that? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and her voice was very enjoyable, until she started screaming. I was impressed with her that night.

Sometime recently, I heard one of the judges – I think it was Paula – say in an interview that they don’t know who Carly is as an artist because they think she’s picking songs that she thinks will please them. I guess it’s a fine line they walk. Simon is kind of “the voice of America” in my opinion. He doesn’t often get it wrong. In a way, you have to please Simon if you want to please America, hence the voting public.

  • tommy gunne

HaHa! What a classic picture, Simon,Teri, and Randy, HaHa!

  • baxter

Snarly….just go home. I want you off my tv this week. She reminds me of this girl I went to highschool with that to this day, I still can’t stand. The air of desperation that hangs like a cloud over her head turns my stomach. Grow a set Snarly…then maybe I’ll like you.

AHhhhhh Cheese…you know my Cookie Love runs deep and true. I would never not vote for him….but….you gotta admit if Jason pulls out Touch My Body, it will be the highlight of every season I have spent watching this show. If he throws in the hootchie dance moves, I can and will die one very happy camper… :mrgreen_wp:

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

Am I allowed entrance into Cooktardsville? LOL.

The only MC songs I know are “We Belong Together” and “Hero” (which is really ironic, for me), so I honestly can’t give any suggestions as to what people are going to sing. I need to do a lot of Youtube-ing in the next day or two.

As much as I love him, I can’t shake out of my head the picture of Jason doing WBT. Does anyone else think that could produce some hilarious results? Hehe. But seriously speaking, Syesha’s probably going to pick that one up.

  • marco5ny

There is a big difference with an AI performer choosing to imitate Mariah song from a theme night of 50 or hundreds of other songs vs. being specifically asked to bring their own interpretation to a Mariah song when that is theme. I see no hypocrisy here.

The entire show is covers so every performer is compared to whoever made the song a hit or even to previous Idols who did it. The more recognizable the original is, the more direct the comparison. When you do poorly, you suffer. When you do well, you get praise.

Kelly Clarkson received praise for doing Mariah’s Without You and Celine’s Think Twice; K-Locke got praise for Celine’s My Heart Will Go On; and Leona did very well with Whitney’s iconic I Have Nothing.

  • later

I have an idea..lets just all vote for Jason no matter what and tick off the PTB! lol! I do wonder what he and Brooke are going to sing. And I agree it will be interesting to see what Simons comments are for Carly or Surly..lol…she is not my cup of tea but she does have a passable voice. I heard Amanda Overmeyer sang the National Anthem at a MotoCross championship but cant find video anywhere ..did anyone else hear this?

  • primeminister

And how will the three boys fare trying to sing Mariah with her supposedly 8 octave voice? Forget Brook and Jason (who are both charming) since I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think they have 2 octave voices.

Actually, Jason’s tied for second place with Carly and Archuleta in terms of range (not including falsetto).

Brooke, on the other hand, is dead last.

    http://www.idolranges.com/standings.htm

  • LaFonda

David Cook should sing “Against All Odds” . He’ll have an idol moment with it. The judges will love it and especially if he does it with a rock edge.

Brooke will probably sing Butterfly and after her pitchy rendition and judges bashing her she’ll say “I picked it because I am a naive butterfly spreading my wings”..

Randy will eat up Carly’s version of Without You like it’s candy. Simon will compare her to Kelly Clarkson.

Syesha will sing “When You Believe” because it is a Whitney and Mariah duet, and that way she will butcher a Mariah and Whitney song at the same time and then wonder why the judges tell her not to.

Kristy Lee will countrify “One Sweet Day”

It would be really cute if David A sang “Fantasy”. A 17-year old Mormon boy singing about his fantasy..

  • joydrop

Would they let anyone sing Against All Odds? Ramiele sang it on the top 16 night.

  • dulce

Good for Carly. This is her chance. She’s really grown on me.

  • missyash

I think tonight is going to be Carly’s Night! If she pulls off the song “Without You” she could actually have that absolute moment that everyone has been waiting to see from her! Simon felt the same and also stated to Carly in a previous week, “you have the best vocals, no one can touch you really.” I really wished she was singing ‘Bringing on the Heartbreak’ tonight though because that’s another big song and Mariah Carey never really went big with that song so I feel this would have been a perfect opportunity for Carly to shine and to make the song her own! But ‘Without You’ is a great song. Carky could actually tonight put herself in the position where she will now be “the one to beat”. America is pulling for you CARLY!!!
