This is our continuation of our preview of possible Season 9 contestants. Remember, that the Hollywood round doesn’t occur until January 9th this year. We don’t know how far any of these contestants might go. And since we never see some of the competition round contestants until the competition starts, we might never see some of these people.

Number 7: Katelyn Clampett
Age: 21

Simon is going to love this girl. She’s good looking and that spells C*O*M*M*E*R*C*I*A*L to him. Since she can also sing in tune, write songs and play the piano and the guitar, Kara is going to think that she’s got the “total package”. Randy is going to be yapping about dawgs. Katelyn has a fair amount of experience performing, so if she doesn’t choke and isn’t diametrically opposed to what they are looking for this year (i.e. a threat), she could make it through.

She’s got a Natasha Bedingfield kind of vibe and is very reminiscent of Brooke White (who may have gone further if she hadn’t crumpled under the pressure of the show). She’s already had one of her songs used for a television show (Golf Channel for the 2009 Nationwide Tour Coverage) and that video she made for “Water Them Down” is more professional looking than some Idols have had. Does she have enough to shine on the Idol stage? Can she capture the Brooke White/Kris Allen fan base? Is she versatile enough to handle the different themes? Can she re-arrange a song?

What do you think?

    ROFLMAOPMP! Good one MJ hahahaha!

Meh. Her voice is just so mellow. Not interested. Unless she wows me in her audition. Simon will love her tho.

  • mitchellvii

    My immediate thought is:

Nice voice, unique sound but NO power. Can she handle all the different styles they throw at you on Idol without sounding THE SAME on every song?

That’s the problem with your voice having a ‘signature sound’. Although cool at first, everything can sound the same after a while. This was Danny Gokey’s undoing. Can she make songs ‘her own’? Also, these videos are mixed. How does she sound live?

  • LoveDaRocker

It will be shocking if this girl doesn’t make it to the top 10.

  • jms

Her voice doesn’t wow me. But she seems to understand and care about the importance of presentation and performance. Very raw in all aspects but I think she might have what it takes at the core. She could definitely make the top 10. Depends on the rest of the competition.

  • jack5791

I think she is someone to look out for. She’s got a nice tone and seems to know a lot about music and performance. She’s kind of a mix of Megan Joy and Brooke White, except she has a stronger voice then Brooke and the experience that Megan lacked.

Terrible name! I predict a lot of Beverly Hillbilly jokes in her future if she makes it very far.

  • chessguy99

A little to cutesy, though the “You Oughta Know” did show some potential to get “dirty” as Kara would put it. Just wish she would have blown it over the crowd noise, that would have shown some vocal power. I agree, if passed into voting rounds she could go Top 10. Even with great song selection, she doesn’t hit me as one that could go real deep. Sings well, looks hot, but nothing that really grabs me musically.

Also, she doesn’t have Brooke’s fanbase going into the competition. IIRC, Brooke had many thousands of MySpace friends at this point. I’ve seen nobody since Brooke that entered the competition with such a fanbase.

Seriously? I think it’s the Clampett name that will help her to stand out above the rest. I immediately thought BHB-cool and I haven’t even heard her sing or seen her picture. (Not that I would vote based on a name.)

I didn’t realize this. However, I really liked Brooke so I guess I’m not surprised.

(just graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston)

    Now this impresses me. :)

  • windmills

I’m impressed by the Berklee credentials but not by the voice or songs. Her tone is a little whiny and her voice doesn’t seem to have much character. The songs also lack charisma IMO. But if she has made it hopefully she’ll show better in her auditions.

  • Niall

A Berklee grad? Impressive. Her name? Not so much. I mean really, a girl from the south with the last name Clampett? The jokes would never end.

I’d put her odds at 50/50. She’s clearly talented but there are so many other factors that go into it and I’m not getting a “shoo in” vibe from her yet.

  • BootStar

    And cue the “Ellie Mae” jokes in 5, 4, 3, 2 . . .

Seriously, I’m not wowed by her voice, but she’s got some A-list friends on her MySpace page: Katy Perry (will she don a special cape for Katelyn???); Joss Stone; The Fray; Flight of the Conchords!

Borderline plantish, but she looks very promising.

  • jersey

I like her voice. I don’t usually like female voices, though, so we’ll see. If my son gets accepted to Berklee next month, I may have to root for her on principle :-)

  • karenc

I really like her, my favorite so far. I think she is more modern sounding than Brooke was. Her original music sounds like something Kelly Clarkson could do and be on the charts now. I like that she can do rock too. I think she’ll get far if she makes it through because she seems versatile.

Wonder if she makes it through, if she’ll have to take her single off itunes and amazon.

  • ross

Come on, she can’t help it if her name is Clampett!

    I dislike her intensely, btw.

  • alison8701

North Carolina represent!!!! wooo. Cary is where Anoop was born.

Anyway. She didn’t wow me, but I guess she’s alright looking. I don’t think she’s quite the package they thought Megan was.. but I feel like I’ve seen her before. Which I can probably say for all of the contestants, but still.

  • Duke

    AHH!

    She is graduating from Berklee!

I just just had my audition for them! I find out if i get in on Jan. 31st!!!

    She good!

  • jersey

DUKE! My son just auditioned, too. His audition was on Dec. 5th. We are anxiously awaiting January 31rst in our household – Berklee is his first choice. He spent two summers there at their 5 week summer performance program. Good luck, and if MJ doesn’t mind, let us know if you get in!

  • cookcricket

I wish both Duke and jersey’s son well w/ their Berklee auditions!!!

  • iluvai

    I like MJ’s write up. :)

Time will tell about the girl.

  • auntieaimee

    Too lightweight for my liking.

  • thesheriff

I personally like that last name…but she can’t move. Why can’t the white girls move? LOL And there was a flash in the water down video where she reminded me of Sarah Michelle Gellar. Kinda homely looking – not the striking beauty Carrie is, IMO. Oh, and the singing – it wasn’t bad.

I hope they put that re-arrangement requirement to rest – that killed it for me.

Ah! Mine was December *counting days* 2nd!!! In atlanta! Thats CrAzY! What kinda music does he do?!?! Thats badass! If we both get in, lol, we could totally meet up and be like, I KNOW YOUR MOM (OR DAD?) FROM MJs!!! Ahahahaha!!!

  • jersey

Duke, he auditioned on electric bass, but he also plays guitar and piano. We went up to Boston for the audition. He’s into alt rock stuff. He likes the Postal Service and Death Cab, a bunch of bands I’ve never heard of like Cursive, Say Anything and As Tall As Lions. I don’t know if that gives you any insight into his music. The most mainstream band he likes that is current is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He was devastated when John Fruschante (I know that’s spelled wrong) left the band to pursue solo projects recently, LOL. (I’m his mom, by the way). Again, good luck and I hope it all works out.

  • Lauren722

I really like her. No, she’s not groundbreaking, but is anyone on Idol? Excluding Season 8 top 3: Kris, Adam, and Danny Allison plus Kelly of course. And as MJ said, she’s pretty. That means a lot. I expect to see her in the top 10 (or at least I hope too)…
