Video!

My recap from last night is finally up. Argh. I dread recapping tonight’s marathon. 2 1/2 hours! But for once, I’m not going to complain about the extra-long Idol tonight. It’s all for a good cause, y’all. I’m even going to put aside my cynicism for one night. Sure, the motives of TPTB are never entirely pure, but who cares? The end result is a good one, so I’m not going to sweat it.

Besides, according to this recent New York Times article, last year’s 75+ million dollars appears to have been well managed and went to many needy charities. It’s all good.

One of the organizations involved with Idol Gives Back is the One campaign to end global hunger. They’ll be asking for support tonight. If you’d like to sign up, I made it easy. Just use the handy dandy banner on your left.

Spoilers for tonight. Pictures from the Kodak Sunday night.

Off to check the recap in a sec…

I don’t know where to put this, but David Crowder just posted on his blog that someone asked permission to do a song of his on AI…who? We don’t know…

    David Crowder’s Blog

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I bet it was Jason, CJ. I also loved reading that entry. Quite frank, that David Crowder. I actually happen to quite like his music. One of the best worship leaders on the Christian music scene, IMO.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I’m thinking Jason, too. I love the song (looked it up on youtube), but think he was much better off with SOTR considering how it went down last night.

  • meme

Countdown to the $big night$. I have my phone in one hand and my checkbook in the other. :thumbup_tb:

It was just worth a donation to see Ryan dancing as they were exiting the stage!

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I’m so glad they left the dancing to professionals in this opening number! Great to see the SYTYCD dancers again too!

  • primeminister

Thanks, CJ for the link. Very interesting. Yeah, that’s got to be Jason. If he was going to go for some CCM, Switchfoot would have been amazing.

Anyways, like pj said, SOTR worked out really well, so you won’t hear any complaining from me!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I love Danny Tidwell. That is all. :)

  • Metta

I’m confuzzled. Is there an elimination tonight or is it just the Idol Gives Back stuff??

  • primeminister

    Metta, IGB tonight, eliminations tomorrow.

  • Metta

    Thanks, primeminister!

  • star

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO. My local FOX affiliate went off the air as soon as IGB started, and it’s not back on yet. :mad_tb:

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

DAMN star’s local Fox affiliate!!! Don’t they know that this is IMPORTANT?! :furious_tb:

  • Lisa

Big storm’s here in OK, so am missing alot of show’s I normally dvr, shoot.

  • hicksaholic

Teri Hatcher singing THINK BEFORE HE CHEATS? Not too good IMO

  • Chicago-sally

I GAVE! I proudly gave! But oh my Mariah. All the vocal acrobats. She knows she has the instrument, but I wish she would just SING and not SING Mariah.

  • s0x_prisoner

    Omg. Annie Lennox is AMAZING!

(Does anyone else think that Brooke looks like a younger version of Annie? I kind of see a resemblance.)

  • primeminister

Thank you for the video clips. I really liked Carrie’s performance- it gave me chills.

  • http://www.xanga.com/Cynarajane CJ

I loved Annie…she is amazing. I also loved seeing Heart!

  • J.S.G.

Two and one half hours can be described in two words

    Annie Lennox…

A segment with which all past and fuutre IGB performances will be compared, and always some up short.

  • Chicago-sally

The opening dancers was fantastic! They were just great. Let’s give props to the AI producers — they know how to put on a show.

  • longsong

I officially dislike Mariah Carey. Bleah. DAMN you Mariah!!

  • MaryS-NJ

I just got home from my stepson’s honor society induction dinner. I missed IGB. It sounds like there was some good stuff. I watched the video of Annie Lennox. I LOVE THAT WOMAN.

  • baxter

    Annie Lennox….there are no words.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

This was a pretty good show. There were lots of great performances… Annie Lennox had me tearing up, and Carrie’s song was beautiful. I was really impressed with Fergie too. Great job on both songs. And Heart rocks!!

But I have to say, the opening number was my favorite performance. It was FABULOUS. Love love loved the SYTYCD dancers up there with the Idols. Those kids can dance and the whole performance just worked.

I just love how my most hated SYTYCD female was paired with my favorite AI guy this year during the song. Thanks for that, Nigel.

PS – They are talking about the David Cook/Lindsey Rose connection on my local Fox affiliate (Orlando) tomorrow morning. It’s been pimped over, and over, and over again all through the show tonight and the news afterward – “A local girl’s connection to a current American Idol contestant. A touching story you just have to hear.” I’m gonna try to watch.

  • jbrad

I thought the show sucked tonight, not nearly as good as last year. There just wasn’t enough performances for me, and even now I can hardly remember who was on. And you know it must be slim pickens if they had the idols do three numbers. Not that I don’t love em, I would rather have seen Kelly C. knock it out like last year, or even have Carrie do another song. I don’t know, I was just bored. And WTF with Teri Hatcher singing? Not cool. I loved seeing the guy from Heros on the drums, though. And was that bachelor Bob singing back up, or was I seeing things?

And I must have missed out on the Annie L. love gene, cause I just don’t get her.

  • Trina

I loved that final group performance. That was really beautiful. Damn David Cook can SING. I think he’s still singing that one note.

  • panz

I have to go back and watch the first 15 minutes. Tough to get home from work by 6:30.

Annie Lennox is amazing. Carrie was great. I liked Heart and Fergie, too.

Did it seem like fewer performances tonight? Than last year’s IGB, I mean.

Heh-heh, and the Cubs thoughtfully are playing into (at least) the 14th inning so I get to see some of the ballgame, too.

  • primeminister

Kristy’s mike was on way too loud at the beginning of the group song. She stuck out like a sore thumb because she was so flat.

  • micp

can anyone tell me what song was playing during the clip about malaria? thanks in advance.

  • GwendolynD

David Cook can SING. I think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still singing that one note.

:laugh_tb: For real. That went on forever.

    Ryan’s dancing was oh-so-bad yet oh-so-good!

  • PrplDva

I enjoyed the show. Just one thought…where the heck are all the other former Idol winners? It ought to be a requirement that they come back. Then I wouldn’t have had to listen to Miley Cyrus TWICE!

    Danny Tidwell-yum!
    David Cook- love his voice
    Ryan -dancing?? loved it!
    I miss Comic Relief
Annie Lennox -made me cry I love her!
Robin Williams- made me cry harder when he grabbed Simon’s booty
    Shiela E -RAWKS
    Ann & Nancy w/Fergie- Awesome!
    Mariah-whats with the hand signals?

  • poporange

Mj thank you for the Annie Lennox uplink and also the advertisement for Vampire Weekend” on SNL was looking for that one..Thanks again……….

  • GwendolynD

    Mariah-whats with the hand signals?

Supposedly, it helps her sing???? I’m not looking forward to next week…at all. I simply don’t get her.

  • primeminister

So the changed the words in Shout to the Lord.
    No more “my Jesus,” Idol?

  • idolbeat

Ryan dancing – OMG! The highlight of the show! I wanted him to keep going!

    Fergie and Heart – WOW!

  • GwendolynD

So the changed the words in Shout to the Lord.
    No more à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“my Jesus,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Idol?

Noticed that. Guess the viewers could pick the “lord” of their choice.

  • http://www.xanga.com/werwanderflugen Preston

    1. Annie Lennox
    2. Carrie Underwood
    3. Fergie/Heart
    4. Archie in “Seasons of Love” (seriously, folks)
    5. Charlie Wilson

  • SpenserJ

I love Danny Tidwell. That is all. :)

Hell Yeah sister. That man is magic on a stick. I come from a pretty long dance background myself, and I’m pretty old, but still I’ve never seen anything quite like him.

I enjoyed the show – there were some pretty impressive moments in there. I just love Heart (I’ll be seeing them this summer on the Heart/Journey/Cheap Trick tour – yeah me!). Annie Lennox was a class act as usual. And as always, I am continually surprised by the depths of Snoop. Even though I’ve seen great things from the man, I still have the popular opinion of him being nothing more than a severely baked gansta rapper creep back into my brain. Then, on nights like tonight, I remember all of the sides of him that show how truly talented he is. Snoop is good for me, in that he reminds me not to believe the hype about some people (good or bad) and just let them show you what they can do.

  • TylerWV

I think the producers never met a celebrity they could say no to. Way too many of them when a sign with the phone number at the bottom of the screen couldve worked some. The first half hour was way too talkative. I almost turned it over to a rerun of Miami CSI. I loved Annie Lennox song. I couldnt understand the lyrics Carrie was singing but she sure looked beautiful. I thought JImmy Kimmel was hilarious. Other then that, wasnt over the top on anyone else. I guess Fantasia couldnt be there due to the tumor being removed off her vocal cord recently. Elliot was listed as participating and he was in the audience but maybe didnt want to perform due to his mom’s death. I too thought more of the Idol winners being there wouldve been a good thing. A good cause though and I hope t hey really raise a lot. It was great of England to donate 200 million dollars worth of mosquito nets. Such a small thing to save a life. It was listed political candidates had prerecorded messages. I didnt see that so maybe they decided not to bring politics into it. Looking forward to Jordin/Chris tomorrow night. Truly love their song.

  • SpenserJ

A touching story you just have to hear.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m gonna try to watch.

We’ve been getting the same thing here on the local Tampa station for weeks too – I tear up every time! I’ve had the opportunity to meet Lindsey’s dad and he’s a fantastic human being. As a parent, my heart breaks for him. As a local viewer, I am astounded by the poise and character that allows him to parlay his own personal hardship into things that benefit others. (That sound is my grinch heart growing yet again).

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Okay after having watched “Don’t Stop The Music” entirely too many times (to identify the DANCERS, I tell ya ;) ), I realized that either DCook really carries that song, or his mic was just really loud, because I could hear him clearly over everyone else during the part where the dancers were doin’ their thang (I heart Danny Tidwell. :) ).

And ahem. Was their intent to kill all the DC fangirls with the part of the song they gave him for his solo?? Yikes, those words – could cause the fangirl to go into overdrive. :blush_tb:

(Needs to emotionally detach – BIG TIME.)

And yeah, “Shout to the Lord” was good. I think the choir ruined it though. That song is beautiful and has a very simple melody – not meant for a big, bombastic gospel choir in the background. But DC and Carly both sounded FANTASTIC on their parts. WOW, DC can sing. Man, that voice. Brooke, David A, and Kristy all sounded good together too. But Michael, Jason, and Syesha should never sing together again.

OMG, TMZ (the tv show) is doing a clip on David A’s “difficulty” picking “Angels” to sing last night and it is HILARIOUS. They’re totally calling him out for pretending he’d basically never heard it before and showing bits of his youtube clip. And then dubbing Napoleon Dynamite’s voice over his. OMG hilarious!!!

  • cheese

Okay after having watched à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Stop The Musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ entirely too many times (to identify the DANCERS, I tell ya ;) ), I realized that either DCook really carries that song, or his mic was just really loud, because I could hear him clearly over everyone else during the part where the dancers were doinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ their thang

I noticed that, too. I’m frankly surprised that Archie wasn’t featured a bit more tonight.

Annie Lennox, Heart & Fergie all sounded incredible. All the Idols sounded great except KLC on Seasons of Change. I definitely liked the opening number the best out of the group songs. Mariah sucks donkey balls. Oh, and I actually liked a DAUGHTRY! song. Huh.

ETA: David Cook looks good in confetti, so he’d better not go home tomorrow.

  • gabam

ROBIN WILLIAMS WAS NOT FUNNY!!! That segment was a waste of time and was irritating to me. (Yep, it’s all about me. LOL)

No Maroon 5 and no Elliott and Fantasia. I’m sad.

I thought last year’s show was better but maybe my memory is faulty because the event was so long ago and it was the first one.

They may reach their goal when the show hits the other time zones. 22 million was a good start.

Loved Fergie. Did we really need two songs from Miley?

Loved that the contestants sang “Seasons Of Love”.

    Mostly I was bored.

  • bean99

I didn’t love the dance part of the opening number and wanted to see more of the idols but then I’ve never watched that dance show. I actually thought this year’s show was better than last year’s.

I loved Annie Lennox and her video was a heartbreaker. Fergie was something else and Heart still has got it. Didn’t really care for Carrie’s song or Mariah. I loved Robin Williams! I enjoyed the Daughtry video although wished they’d also been on the show instead of Miley Cyrus singing twice. What About Now was a great song for the show.

I was surprised that it was so hard to hear the solos in their last song. I did enjoy the parts where the idols were answering the phones. Michael’s a lefty like me. :cool2_tb:

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

    SpenserJ Apr 9th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I just love Heart (Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be seeing them this summer on the Heart/Journey/Cheap Trick tour – yeah me!).

I really like Heart, but I heart Cheap Trick. If this were 1979, I’d be all over that tour.

I’m most definitely not a Fergie fan and thought her appearance was an odd choice. Worse, she needlessly upstaged the sisters Wilson, who are enjoying an unlikely revival thanks to the Guitar Hero video game that features Barracuda (hence, that particular selection). Annie can still outsing most of her contemporaries and many young ‘uns, and Nancy was always the rockingest chick this side of Chrissie Hynde. Considering how many AI contestants have covered their songs vs. Fergie’s, Heart really didn’t need to be propped up.

In fact, I feel sorry for my son’s generation that we got the founding fathers (and mothers) of rock and he got … Fergie.

  • thesheriff

I coulda listened to David C in that opening number for another hour or so…..

  • bean99

I think my boys have it alright, Terrie, but they like alternative music and some old rock so they really have the best of both worlds. They wouldn’t dream of watching AI or most of the ones on tonight other than maybe Annie Lennox. I don’t usually like Fergie but did tonight. She really does have a wonderful voice when she’s not doing songs like Fergalicious.

  • NOLA

My little city of New Orleans was well represented tonight with homies…

    Eli and Peyton Manning
    Ellen DeGeneres
    Brad Pitt

Very nice job, Idol. I hope it’s very successful!

  • idolwatcher

Thanks for the video links. My DVR didn’t record the last group number – don’t know why it’s off sync sometimes. I don’t really care who’s going home tomorrow as long as it’s NOT David Cook!

  • star

I really want them to have the SYTYCDancers on all the results shows. I have watched that opening number at least 10 times tonight. Fantastic.

I’ve seen most of the performances now, loved Fergie and Heart, and Carrie. I wanna know what happened to Maroon 5. :( Couldn’t we lose the Miley performance that was not “See You Again” (I love that song…) in favor of Maroon 5? Maybe they’re saving it to air later.

I hope they raise a lot of money for their cause.

  • primeminister

iTunes studio recordings have now been made available!

    Heh, yeah, me too. :tongue1_tb:

  • joydrop

How the heck did they EVER clear Shout to the Lord? Even without the mention of Jesus in that song, it is pretty blatantly Christian. That was pretty cool, and they did a really good job especially with the choir.

Annie Lennox was really good (my second favorite moment of the night, right behind the closing song), and the rest of it? Pretty much bored me to tears with the exception of the first minute or so of the opening number.

  • inky

can anyone tell me what song was playing during the clip about malaria?

I believe that was “Breathe Me” by Sia (love her)

    yay dancers!
I loved the Snoop Dogg/Charlie Wilson performance. Annie Lennox made me cry.

  • Lisa

David Cook in his part on *Don’t Stop the Music* =HOT :wub_tb:

Keeps up her prayer, don’t let it be him tomorrow night please…

  • abbysee

Annie Lennox showed how it should be done. Miley Cyrus showed how it should never be done, twice. Por que? Mariah’s performance makes me think all the performers next week will be better than she was tonight. Randy was cool on bass though. Well she has never been a performer imho anyway. I think I saw more of her hand than her face, but at least tonights outfit didn’t come from the Tranny Hooker Imporium. Thank Jeebus, lol. Love ya MJ!

  • NOLA

inky, is that the song that was on Gray’s Anatomy?

  • J.S.G.

Did not get the Fergie / Heart song. Really liked the vocal, admire Fergie’s athleticism but don’t understand why she had to crawl around the flor like a barracuda. Was that really necessary to sell that song?

But Fergie’s got a great voice(she’s my favorite of that genre whatever that genre is ) and her song with John Legend was terrific. She would have easily won AI.

Milly Cyrus won’t win Idol but she is a rising comedic actress as she demonsttrated in her exchange with Billy Crystal.

And Carrie Underwood really connected with that song. Her most moving performance ever.

After last night, totally wanted Syesha gone this week. But you know, she really shines during those group numbers. The best of the bunch really. She can dance and easily lifts her vocals to another level.

Thought the segments produced in Kentucky, New York and New Orleans were really well done this year. What Brad Pitt is doing is and how he is doing it…such great work.

  • NOLA

Brad is doing so much for New Orleans. He and Angelina bought a home here and he said he is putting his career on hold until he builds these houses. He truly puts his money where his mouth is. He rolls up his sleeves and actually builds houses. A great humanitarian.

  • moody

So the changed the words in Shout to the Lord.
    No more à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“my Jesus,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Idol?

Jesus is back in the iTunes recording of the song. The studio version is really good. There’s a little OTT screechiness from a couple of the girls at the end but otherwise very nice.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

Annie Lennox was a stah tonight! As she should be.

  • geekygirl

I think I saw more of her hand than her face, but at least tonights outfit didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t come from the Tranny Hooker Imporium.

abby! :laugh_tb: We obviously are on the same wavelength with Mariah!

  • Chicago-sally

I was listening to Syesha’s solos and she has a very pretty voice. I don’t know why she’s not connecting with the judges and/or the public — besides that she’s an actress and her performances are “safe”.

“OMG, TMZ (the tv show) is doing a clip on David Aà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“difficultyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ picking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Angelsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to sing last night and it is HILARIOUS. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re totally calling him out for pretending heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d basically never heard it before and showing bits of his youtube clip. And then dubbing Napoleon Dynamiteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice over his. OMG hilarious!!!”

Yep, I saw that too. One of the probs with David A for me is that he’s been prepped since he was a baby to be a singing star and he comes off as a total innocent. All those songs he chooses he’s sung over and over and over elsewhere…and why hasn’t he been signed by someone? Could it be dad wants too much control? Just thinking.

  • Chicago-sally

MJ I agree, Fergie has quite a voice, she’s good. Surprised she’s not bigger than she is. She could be at the very top.

  • dulce

Much MUCH better than last year.

    Interesting Tidbits:

    1. Opening number was AWESOME when it really shouldn’t have been.
    2. Annie Lennox is all types of AMAZING.
    3. Fergie can SING! I knew it. Sad John Legend didn’t do more though.
    4. Carrie Underwood gets better and better.
    5. Archie still can’t remember lyrics or the fact that he has actually sung “Angels” numerous times in the past. Does he meet DSM IV criteria for early Alzheimers yet?
    6. Mariah Carey has officially lost her voice…at least the quality that made it special to begin with. She’s still amazing. I spent most of my childhood just in awe of her.
    7. Closing Number: DC and Carly brought it home. I LOVE both of their voices.

Tomorrow Bottom 3: Carly, Syesha, DC with DC headed back to the chairs first. He needs a scare. Based on what I heard tonight on the pop/gospel numbers they did….I am certain that Cook can bring this home. He just can’t afford another iffy night. Ah….I hope Syesha is gone. I just don’t want to deal with her trying to out-Mariah-Mariah when it’s obviously never going to happen. But no…I think Carly is gone…truly gone. Not enough of a fan base to save her when the casual vote went Jason Castro’s way.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Wow, the recorded version of “Shout to the Lord” really IS beautiful. This could be one of the best versions I’ve heard, and being involved in church music for the past 15 years, I’ve heard a lot of them.

The gospel choir is still unnecessary though. Just the Idols and their harmonizing would have been sufficient on this song.

Surprised sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not bigger than she is. She could be at the very top.

Um, correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t Fergie had 5 hits from “The Duchess” and working on her 6th one with “Finally”? And “Big Girls Don’t Cry” was at the top of pop radio this summer for like 11 or 12 weeks (or longer). I’d say that’s pretty big.

David Cook’s recorded version of “Innocent” – two thumbs up.

  • sciencefan

I thought Terri Hatcher was pretty good for someone who’s not a singer.
    I didn’t like Miley’s singing.
I didn’t know who Fergie was, I mean I had heard her name before, but when they announced her, I didn’t catch her name. I had never seen her before. Is she gay? That was pretty funky how she was petting those other ladies.
    I enjoyed Robin Williams.
I busted out laughing a couple of other times during the night.
I didn’t like Carrie Underwood’s song, but she was absolutely gorgeous.

  • sciencefan

I just looked on iTunes and it didn’t allow me download – only pre-order. ???

  • justshootme

Annie Lenox was just … beyond amazing for me. All those big belters should pay attention. That is how you have a huge vocal AND portray emotional complexity in a song. She should be mentoring instead of freakin’ Mariah.

  • Steph

ETA: David Cook looks good in confetti, so heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d better not go home tomorrow.

    lol cheese! yes, he does!

i loved jimmy kimmel last night. he told simon to button his shirt!

  • geekygirl

didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who Fergie was, I mean I had heard her name before, but when they announced her, I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t catch her name. I had never seen her before. Is she gay? That was pretty funky how she was petting those other ladies.

LOl, no she is very straight, I think she is engaged to some hunk whom I never heard of. She used to be the singer in Black Eyed Peas which had the huge hit “Where is the Love” which Justin Timberlake had something to do with. I saw the BEP in concert here in London and they were amazing and she has a phenomenal voice and stamina on stage! Never stopped leaping around.

  • bean99

Fergie’s engaged to Josh Duhamel from the show Las Vegas. He’s very, very cute.

I still can’t figure out why they’d have Miley singing twice when they had to cut others out and still went over. Other than the live portion, they already had it produced. :blink_tb:

  • oh brother!

Fergie is engaged to actor Josh Duhamel.

I think the reason Fergie isn’t a bigger star is that her stardom feels like work. She doesn’t make stardom look effortless. I always feel every calculation and thought that goes into putting Fergie the Star together.

Syesha was very good in the group numbers, and for a while I’ve thought that she would do better in a girl group than as a solo singer. (Likewise, I’ve thought that Carly should front a band, which would decrease the pressure on her to look like a perfect pop star.)

  • Giggy

I was distracted most of the night but I LOVED Annie Lennox and I liked Mariah, too. She’s at her best when she goes back to her roots and sings those kind of songs. IMO.

  • HollandX

:( I laughed hard during Robin Williams.
