Keep in mind, David Cook has gained on Archuletta for nearly two months now. Overtaking the lead from DA many weeks ago. When Castro left the show, DC’s lead over DA widened. A clear indication his fanbase had increased.

Well, Clive is out. But I agree with your logic. Idol needs a big selling WINNER now, not another finalist who proves winning doesn’t matter. The runner up will be left to shift for himself IMO, with the same expectations but not so much support.

I didnt vote last night since my fav was gone and I liked both of the remaining guys, but not enough to vote. Re. the voting, I remember reading an explanation a few seasons back about the phone lines. It said the lines can only carry x amount of calls, and once the lines are loaded up, no one else gets through. So, the way to win is texting. If both contestants are pretty equaling popular, the one with the most text votes wins. It also said, some area phone lines dont carry as many calls as others. Carrie had the college crowd texting like crazy, Bo didnt and he was from a home town that had older phone lines. So in season 6, soul patrol got out the word the way to win was texting and the go phone orders were sent out. I dont think the vote was close between taylor and kat so the go phones may have not mattered that much. I think this year, texting will make all the difference and the younger crowd is more prone to texting, thus DA may have the advantage. If DC gets runner up, I hope he gets a deal that he can turn clive down. Runnerup gets the same press, but not as good songs and promotion. Why would they want the runner up to out sell the winner? Ryan said as much re. the good songs on Larry King. You would think that runners up would have done much better since they were all so talented. But no, they all signed with clive, hint hint.

Colleen,great post and I hope your right and I actually think there is some truth to the “reverse psychology” debate .DI is great news but I’m still not getting to excited incase he doesn’t win.I voted the whole 4 hours and had some trouble with getting through but I voted a decent amount for Cookie.Even if Cookie doesn’t win its not so bad he’ll have a contract and my family and friends are all Cookie fans and we will buy any albums he comes out with.

Interesting view, Seraphina. I think that if you minimize the busy signals, they’d get a whole lot more votes, though not, as you point out, the increased revenue due to texting.

Personally, if I couldn’t call, I wouldn’t vote.

I guess a 35% increase in votes is possible but, even with higher ratings and a closer race, it doesn’t seem probable to me. That increase would have to compensate for the reduced number of calls as well.

We will know soon enough. If they did get to 100 mil, they will certainly be bragging about it, right at the beginning, I would think.

Well…last night garnered higher ratings than last year’s show, and this year it was a much closer race, with more than a little stirring of the pot by Simon to really get everyone going. Factor in increased texting each season and I can believe the vote total could have been 100 mil.

Also, re the 3 land lines…doesn’t limiting the number of lines (thereby increasing busy signals) encourage more peeps to vote by text, and so bring in a higher revenue for the producers?

I really hope and pray that if David Cook wins tonight…the judges will be behind him 100%. He has proved to be a very serious, evolved, contemporary artist throughout the show. Even if they all agree that DA had a stellar night last night, it CANNOT go without saying that DC has been the most consistent and had many more WOW moments than DA. Yes, DA is a prodigy, a gifted singer, but he lacks the versatility and life experience. He is not without flaw. He surely does not have this competition in the bag as many have argued since the judges blatantly did one last huge pimp job last night. If DC wins he will have earned it. I don’t want to see ONE headline tomorrow that says that DA was robbed. It just wouldn’t be true.

I keep going back to why they only had 3 lines each. That made for a lot of busy signals. If they’d opened it up to 5 or 6 lines each, they could’ve had a ton more votes and so more bragging rights.

As for total votes, 100 mil would be incredible. I was just reading a site where a guy gives a play by play and at last year’s finale, they said they said they set a new world record with 74 million votes.

Somehow, I doubt that an increase from 74 mil to 100 mil is possible.

Another way of looking at the Simon mystery is that you can flip it the other way, he is covering his bases for either win.

If DA wins and he is questioned about the week’s predictions, he can say DA was better on the night and he said so with giving all three rounds to DA.

If DC wins, he can say DA was better on the night but he predicted that DC would win it all week. He never said, as far as I can find, that DA was the next AI like he has done in past years.

Slime on has covered his ass no matter what.
