SCOTTY MCCREERY’S “I LOVE YOU THIS BIG” BREAKS INTO TOP 25 IN THREE WEEKS

HE PERFORMS THE SINGLE ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO ON WEDNESDAY

NASHVILLE,TN–Mercury Nashville/19 Recordings/Interscope artist Scotty McCreery has soared into the Top 25 after only three weeks of the release of his history-making debut single, “I Love You This Big.”

He will perform the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday.

The song jumped three slots, from No. 28 to No. 25, on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart this week, giving it an increase of 3.5 million more listeners than the previous week. The song had the highest debut on this chart for a new artist’s first single since 1984.

It jumped from No. 34 to No. 26 this week on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart, where it was the No. 2 top gainer in country.

During the last few days, Scotty made his debut performance on the Grand Ole Opry, performed with Josh Turner on LP Field during CMA Music Fest and began recording his debut album. He is now back in Los Angeles to begin rehearsals for the American Idols Live tour that begins July 6 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and runs through September.

He will perform on ABC’s Good Morning America on Aug. 12 on the Summer Concert Stage in Central Park. Scotty and Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina will perform solo and in a group number with Idol’s Top 11.

Adam and Kris had hit songs, it wasn’t too long ago.

Yes, they did, but the public is fickle and season 9 continued, not started a slide in the numbers that the ‘winner’ is thought to get. Kris’ numbers had to be a disappointment, hit single notwithstanding, he sold very few cds. Lee continued that. If idol is going to continue to be the show it wants to be, it’s winner must put up Cookie numbers at least. He must also have the buzz, that the past two winners have not been able to muster. So far, Scotty is doing that.

but I don’t think the pop or rock worlds world be as delighted with a fairly callow 17 year old boy Idol winner, with a cheesy coronation single, who doesn’t appear to be very musically sophisticated.

I can’t speak for the rock world, but when you think that in the past couple of years we’ve had both Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber topping charts, I don’t worry about Scotty’s lack of musical sophistication, not in the least.

Yet the pop world accepted someone like beiber, and I would not describe him as “musically sophisticated”.

Maybe it is his lack of sophistication that is interesting to a certain segment of the populace. As has been mentioned numerous times within the bubble….peeps seem to love the growth arc of many contestants…and now they get to see it in the real world. No one will ever convince me that Elvis or the Beatles or The Stones started out being uber sophisticated. Replaying their early work is a real trip sometimes….I can’t believe how we went ape-shit over “I wanna Hold your Hand”…talk about an inane song with simplistic lyrics and a very teeny bopper presentation.

The radio market is not full of folks who are music impresarios….its full of everyday people who like music because of the way it makes them feel…not about perfect notes or breath control or being classroom precise. And I also don’t think the pop or the rock world are musically superior to genres such as country…and I don’t think being an independent artist automatically makes someone’s music more refined and tasteful.

I don’t have a clue what Scotty’s future really holds, but for now he’s been doing something right for six months. He won Idol, he has a coronation single which is getting played, he has press articles written about him and his interviews get numerous “hits”….not bad for a home grown kid with home grown talent whose prior claim to fame was being in a high school choir.

Thank you for posting this–I’m so happy for Scotty–and can only hope he enjoys a long, successful career–mostly because I am addicted to his voice!!!!

ross: I think his current success is great (sincerely), but I don’t think the pop or rock worlds world be as delighted with a fairly callow 17 year old boy Idol winner, with a cheesy coronation single, who doesn’t appear to be very musically sophisticated.

I may have a different definition of musical sophistication but I don’t think Scotty is lacking in it. I don’t think he would be as good a storyteller as he is without being musically sophisticated. His musical knowledge within the country genre runs far beyond his 17 years. This is a guy who visualized Hank Williams standing in that fabled Opry circle and knew enough to dig out some non obvious song choices that probably weren’t on the narrow AI pre-cleared list, he’s got great taste in songwriters (he’s said Jamey Johnson is his favorite), and he has really good phrasing instincts.

He’s got tons of improving he needs to do especially with regards to his voice and I really think it’s way, WAY too early to declare him somebody who could become the most successful male Idol. But lack of musical sophistication is not something that’s holding him back.

ross: So I think (without taking anything away from him) he’s very lucky to be a country artist.

The rock world usually demands some tough adult living from its stars but the pop world is notorious for turning unsophisticated Disney teens with no depth of musical knowledge into popular acts and using other acts as dumbed down vehicles for producer beats. Like lili_anne7 is saying, ever heard of Bieber? That’s just one example.

Adam and Kris had hit songs, it wasn’t too long ago.

Meh, neither of them got past the top 10 on the charts and I never hear their songs on the radio anymore. Neither sold very well for their albums.

I am not necessarily an Adam or Kris fan (more of a Danny and Lauren fan) but that statement is just incorrect.

Kris first single from his album sold over 1 million as did Adam’s 1st/2d single. I still hear Live Like We’re Dying and What You Want from Me on the radio and Adam’s What You Want From Me was nominated for a grammy for Pop male vocal performance. I would call both of them big hits. It is not easy to get top 10 hits on top 40. Scotty is off to a great start but he has not sold as much as either Kris or Adam and although their singles were first singles from the debut albums, Scotty’s single is being pushed by his label as a first single with radio promotion, etc. Adam has done really well from Season 8, let’s not try and change history just because Scotty is off to a great start.

    Go Scotty!

I feel like Scotty is someone who is going to grow into their own in a few years. His best is way ahead, and that’s when I’ll probably buy it. :D But he’s just got “it” in spades IMO, so all I really wanted for him is to get off to a good enough start that he would get a chance to grow into it later. So far so good! If he can follow this up with a killer single or 2 he should be in good stead!

EXCELLENT!!! Go Scotty. I love that song.

According to Billboard country update June 13:

“American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery is strong with active P1s as his debut single, “I Love You This Big,” scores No. 6 on the Radiofeedback chart, up from No. 8. It’s also gaining ground with its passion score: “Big” climbs to No. 9 from No. 12. Mc-Creery’s favorable scores are skewed to 35-plus listeners, who rank the song at No. 5 and No. 7 passion. By contrast, younger 18-34 adults place it at No. 25 and No. 18 passion. Females 35-plus are at No. 5. Men 35-plus are at No. 23 and No. 29 passion.

Grown-up people listen to Scotty’s songs a lot. Who think only teenybopper votes and listen for him are surely wrong.

  • McCreerian

LOL I remember those days when people were saying he wouldn’t be “believable” in the country world just because he is a teenage male and he “needs to be at least 25″ just so he can sing about his life experiences as a male. It looks like the country world is accepting him and finding him believable just fine :)

The pop world accepts Taylor Swift, so it’s not really that choosy.

I think Scotty has demonstrated that he knows what he’s doing musically, and what he’s doing on stage. He won’t really get to show that off until he starts making his own music, but out of the top 13 people of season 10, he was the most confident on stage. He had more presence than people who were not only older, but who had more experience.

If idol is going to continue to be the show it wants to be, it’s winner must put up Cookie numbers at least.

Perception is everything. In many people’s views, Cookie didn’t have a lot of buzz, and I doubt that too many viewers or reporters know what his numbers are. It’s why, as many Cook fans have pointed out, he gets put into the same group as Kris and Lee. Most people could care less about the numbers or the buzz, two years of the winners not living up to what some fans want didn’t hurt the ratings of the show, in fact, this past season had more buzz than the show has had in years.

So I really don’t care what anybody says about Scotty. I love the kid and hope he is very succesful. I can’t stand the people who hate him cause their favorite didn’t win. Get over it. The country music family loves this kid and will make him a star. Why not support him and be happy for him?

OH MY GOODNESS. This makes me so happy! Scotty is the only idol I’ve been this invested to besides Adam.

I don’t worry about Scotty’s lack of musical sophistication, not in the least.
I tend to not overanalye; I just like what I like. To me, Scotty is the whole package. If some feel he’s musically unsophisticated, it’s only because 5 months ago, he was, as he says, an average kid bagging groceries and singing in the school choral. I expect that his musical sophistication will grow quickly and only enhance an already beautiful voice and presence.

Others must feel the same or he wouldn’t be doing as well as he is. For me, it’s a huge relief to have discovered him. Above all, he’s likeable and oftentimes, that’s as impactful as talent. I’ll take him over Justin, Miley, Demi, the Jonas Brothers etc anyday!
