Carrie Underwood with Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina at today’s Simon Fuller Walk of Fame ceremony

Update: According to Idol Chatter Carrie Underwood will pick a song for Lauren Alaina and George Strait will choose for Scotty McCreery. No word on what those songs are. A third song will be a favorite performance chosen by Lauren and Scotty. eta: Carrie posted on her fan club message board that the song she chose for Lauren is one she really wanted to sing on the show but never got the chance. (via leilamaurizia)

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina’s coronation singles have LEAKED courtesy of the Taste of Country blog!

Country fans won’t have to wait long to hear Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina on the radio. Both plan to officially release their debut singles on Thursday, May 26, one day after the ‘American Idol‘ winner is announced. Taste of Country was tipped by a source at Universal Music Group, who tells us that McCreery’s song is called ‘Love You This Big’ and Alaina’s is titled ‘Like My Mother Does.’

Both singers will premiere their new singles during this week’s ‘Idol’ performance show on Tuesday, May 24. Our source didn’t provide further details about either teenager’s new music, but added that both performances will be available on iTunes on Tuesday night.

I wonder if country music songwriter, Tim Nichols co-wrote Scotty’s song? He tweeted recently, “American Idol finalist Scotty McCreery recorded one of my songs tonight in L.A.!” Nichols wrote “Live Like You Were Dying” and other songs.

UPDATE: Country artist, Jesse Lee also recorded a version of “Like My Mother Does”. Listen HERE.

Lauren’s single was recorded by Kristy Lee Cook for her ill-fated album, “Why Wait”. Hm. Listen below:

  • windmills

Kristy Lee Cook released Like My Mother Does on her album for Arista Nashville: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FbYFJFoDoQ

If this is the same song (and I bet it is) the prophecy of Kristy Lee Cook WILL be fulfilled no matter what.

Jesse Lee a country singer/songwriter also recorded and released the song as a single but it didn’t go anywhere on the charts.

  • BrandoC15

    …yawn…

  • idolfan92

I’m interested to hear these. From the titles they sound like ballads. Wonder if the lyrics will be corny or actually good. Still think the finale will be a snooze-fest though, so I really don’t care that I’m not going to be able to watch it live.

Edit: Now that I’ve heard Lauren’s song, it’s going to play right into the hearts of America. Remember Taylor Hicks with his ode to his parents on Do I Make You Proud? But I still think Scotty’s got this thing in his back pocket, even if Lauren out-sings him tomorrow night. The person who wins the night doesn’t always win anyway.

  • Trina

Lauren’s song is really, really pretty. She should sound great on it.

  • Incipit

If this is the same song (and I bet it is) the prophecy of Kristy Lee Cook WILL be fulfilled no matter what.

Funny about the prophecy connection – but I would hope for Lauren’s sake this isn’t verified.

That album was tossed together from canned songs and tanked faster then the time that was spent to make it. Which was what – a couple of days?

    Talk about recycling.

  • chearts77

I love Like My Mother Does. Have KLC’s album and it’s my favorite song on there. It is a ballad. I think if Lauren can pull off the emotional connection, she may steal some of the mom’s voting for Scotty. Not this mom, though. I’m all about Scotty, though I adore Lauren too. Is there an audio on Scotty’s song?

  • McCreerian

Ha, Kristy Lee Cook continues to make her mark on idol history! If Scotty doesn’t win and fulfill the “prophecy” we will still have Lauren singing one of Kristy Lee Cook’s original singles! lol.

  • fuzzywuzzy

So Lauren gets a cover as a coronation song? Interesting. Not fond of the song at all, but Kristy Lee has a nice recording voice.

  • SpenserJ

Oh no. That mother song is trite. And, Lauren shouldn’t be singing anything that draws attention to her stage mama.

Plus, yeah, windmills that whole Kristy Lee Cook thing LOL.

Not looking good for Lauren. I’ll be interested to see if she can push sales of that awful song, just based on a good performance.

  • OiWithThePoodles

Love You This Big? I mean, I know Scotty’s young, but he doesn’t talk like a baby, anymore. haha

  • McCreerian

Not looking good for Lauren. I’ll be interested to see if she can push sales of that awful song, just based on a good performance.

There have been worse. Remember No Boundaries?

  • Jamcracker

Maybe the curse of having songs leaked will continue and they’ll both be voted off.

  • Jon

I don’t like Lauren’s song. Seriously? Singing a song about her stage mom?????

I’m only kidding. But i still don’t like the song.

  • cookbunny

So far I can’t find a song called “Love You This Big” in Tim Nichols’ listing on BMI. I’ll do a title search.

ETA: no luck for either in BMI or ASCAP. I do remember a country song way back called “I Love You This Much,” I wonder if that’s it?

  • sagi

Oh no! Are we ready for the camera to pan the stage mama at opportune moments? I say a shot and a beer for every time they zoom in on her! Hey, we may happily get through the entire show this way! “I Love You This Big” ???? “Like My Mother Does”???? I would venture to say they are trying to give the kids age appropriate songs! ;) (although Scotty’s song title sounds more directly related to a 5 year old)

  • Kirsten

Love You This Big? I mean, I know Scotty’s young, but he doesn’t talk like a baby, anymore. haha

I seem to recall a board book with that catch phrase.

LOL At the Kristy Lee song. I know it isn’t fair to Lauren, but the entire KLC curse thing is too funny and I want the song to be hers.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

    LOL @ song titles.

Lauren’s song is okay, I mean, it’s a normal country song, not the usual coronation song dreck.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

I can see visions of the split screen of lauren and her SHY mommy in my head….it shall be so special. If she can drop a tear she may steal it from scotty do whatty.

  • Trina

Why do I suddenly picture Lauren breaking down in tears then the camera panning to scarystagemom blubbering as well?

  • McCreerian

So far I can’t find a song called “Love You This Big” in Tim Nichols’ listing on BMI. I’ll do a title search.

Must be a brand new song written specifically for him.

  • SpenserJ

I’m willing to bet some serious pocket change that “I Love You This Big” is about Grandma.

  • Pam

I think the song is pretty but I really wish Lauren hadn’t been given a cover song for her single. It could give her the support from the casual voters out there that could really tip the balance in her favor. Glad to know Scotty didn’t get a cover but I am anxious to hear it. I do hope both singles do well for Lauren and Scotty.

If this is the same song (and I bet it is) the prophecy of Kristy Lee Cook WILL be fulfilled no matter what.

When you mentioned KLC, that thought went through my mind….”Shudders”. LOL

Why do I suddenly picture Lauren breaking down in tears then the camera panning to scarystagemom blubbering as well?

I really like Lauren but I hate the thought of that. Her mom has gotten too much attention as it is. I hope Lauren can keep her composure somehow during her performance tomorrow.

  • NOLA

    Let me get this straight…

Lauren (top 2) doesn’t get an original song; but
    Haley (top 3) does?

  • McCreerian

I wonder if Scotty’s “Love You This Big” is directed towards his Mom too? ;)

Remember, Aaron Kelly did the same thing Shania week with “You’ve Got A Way” it was sung for his Mom.

  • kbfolk

That’s soo weird?? Lame…. ick… staggering on the words..

  • NOLA

Must be a brand new song written specifically for him.

    That’s what I think, also.

  • SpenserJ

Why do I suddenly picture Lauren breaking down in tears then the camera panning to scarystagemom blubbering as well?

Because that’s exactly what’s going to happen :).

    Let me get this straight…

Lauren (top 2) doesn’t get an original song; but
    Haley (top 3) does?

I’m not sure that we know Haley’s is an original yet, do we?

Either way – I think Lauren’s getting screwed here. The song is stupid and previously appeared on one of the biggest epic failures in Idol recording history.

  • CindyM

Moved. It’s in the evening headlines thread.

  • tomr

“I’m starting to look like my mother does.” —Why did they do this to her. Lauren…please no!

  • SpenserJ

Oh dang, they really are trying to pretend that Lee never won.

  • Kirsten

So far I can’t find a song called “Love You This Big” in Tim Nichols’ listing on BMI. I’ll do a title search.

Maybe the Tim song is Fuller’s choice (or the song is brand new)?

  • blmetsfan

Ugh, poor Lauren. I mean, it’s an “OK” song as a filler on your first album, but as your debut single? Awful. Can’t believe they’ve had so long to get a song, and this is what they get.

  • paperboating

Man, I really don’t like country music.

That said, from a objective point of view the song could be worse. It’s pretty good choice on a strategic level. She has a good chance of emotionally connecting as well as have the opportunity to show off her voice with the higher notes. I think it could go well on performance night.

On the other hand, as a single, I’m not overly excited. I really think she does better with uptempo but what can you do?

WTH?? Wow, that is just not right.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

    Has Lee called Taylor?

  • cookbunny

Hey, if you want perfect country songs, you can’t go wrong with singing about Mama. Now we just need lines about trains, trucks, prison and getting drunk (okay, maybe not the last two)!

  • McCreerian

Meh nothing can be worse than “No Boundaries”

  • Pam

Oh dang, they really are trying to pretend that Lee never won.

That’s just what jammasta was saying in the other top 2 thread basically and I agree 100%. I think he’s probably on the verge on being dropped from RCA and they are probably waiting till after the finale is over to do it imo. That is proof to me that this show wants to completely erase season 9 from their history books.

ETA: Thanks mj for the thread and thanks windmills for the vid. :)

  • NOLA

I don’t like that song for her, at all, not on Final 2 night.
It’s a draggy-assed song. I’m not her fan; but I don’t dislike her enough to wish this song on her.

    GEAUX SCOTTY!

  • Kirsten

NEWS: Lee DeWyze is NOT performing at the S10 American IdolFinale. (Confirmed by management) 17 minutes ago via Splitweet

Is this legit? They even let Taylor sing in the S6 finale. I did think it was odd that he wasn’t at the Fuller thing today. Poor Lee. Lucy just keeps pulling that football away.

  • SpenserJ

    Has Lee called Taylor?

At least Taylor got to come back and appear. This seems pretty harsh to me. Maybe there’s a personal reason for it (i.e. family emergency or something)?

  • sagi

I think for Lauren they picked this song hoping for votes. You know she is gonna get all drippy eyed, and so is her mom (who will also be all weepy) Then America is going to be like “awww” :’( And TPTB hope all of America votes for “The One” I am willing to wager at the end of her song she sobs “I love you, mama” :crys:

  • SpenserJ

That’s just what jammasta was saying in the other top 2 thread and he needs to read that because his suspicions along with I think a lot of others will be confirmed.

That’s what made me crack up about it. We need to go back over to that thread and tell him he was right!

ETA: Kirsten – mj has that news in the evening Headlines thread, so I think it’s true.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

and if Lauren’s voice cracks while crying….j-lo and all can say BABY you tried and that is a beautiful Thang

  • Kirsten

Maybe they are trying to save us all. If Kris, Lee and Cook are all in the same room with Scotty or while Lauren sings a KLC song, it may mean the end of the world. Lee graciously bowed out to keep the world spinning. He deserves a medal.

  • Lucy1234

I haven’t listened to the song yet. KLC only had one single released form her album and virtually nobody bought her album so the song is pretty much a new song. Plus KLC doesn’t hold a candle to Lauren vocally. I’m willing to keep an open mind. For those that don’t listen to country, singing about your mama is a good thing.

  • Jon

I might be the minority, but this news almost makes me interested in watching tomorrow ONLY to see if they start taking shots of Lauren’s mom. I think i would laugh. But in second thought, I think i’ll just watch that scene online.

  • Pam

That made me LOL like you wouldn’t believe. I agree. ;)

  • randomjoe

Kristy Lee Cook may sound like a derivative Leanne Rimes, but she can hit the money notes…
Unchained Melody (jumps to the money note)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nwFMQ0NYSM&t=166s
(I actually like the tone in her voice)

Sorry but he confirmed on twitter that he wasn’t asked to perform. Too bad. I thought there was a rumor early on this season that all the winners were going to show up.

  • songsungblue

I am willing to wager at the end of her song she sobs “I love you, mama” :crys:

    **dies laughing**

  • spanishfan

And here comes the glory note and she will be wearing another prom dress. I can see the scene right now.

  • http://mattgiraudfans.net 3DoorsDownFan

Wow what a terrible song!! Poor Lauren!

  • songsungblue

Is it me, or is that a terrible song? I liked the Band Perry song she did, but this one….feh. No wonder Haley rejected two songs before she agreed to record the third one!

  • Jon

Is this why the Idol Gods destined Lauren in the Top 2 over Haley? So Lauren and her mom can have this moment? So not cool :(

  • girlygirl

so is Scotty’s song a cover too? or just Lauren’s?

  • SpenserJ

songsungblue, it’s most definitely a terrible song.

  • sagi

And here comes the glory note and she will be wearing another prom dress. I can see the scene right now.

Or her and her mom will be in matching hair and attire to fit the lyric of “I hear people saying I’m starting to look like my mother does” :D

  • Lucy1234

I like Lauren’s song and I suspect it was chosen because she really relates to it. The song is sweet just like she has been represented on the show and I think it could do well for her. Lots of moms are going to like this song – I know I do. Universal has to be very careful about the lyrics of the songs chosen for Scotty and Lauren since it looks like they will be sent to country radio and for them to take the songs seriously they have to be age appropriate.

  • MayMirabella

I hate to say this as I really disliked Season 9 but I looked more forward to the Finale with Crystal and Lee. Yikes, did I just say that? LOL

  • randomjoe

The sentimental lyrics will resonate with her supporters and her breathy voice and tendency to drop off notes will probably work well with the verses. If she can manage the power note, then they’ll call it *the* “moment” (or perhaps even if she works around it).

Sadly, I think KLC is a much better singer.

  • MayMirabella

Speaking of Scotty and Lauren, I have to share a funny story in talking to young teen girls. They were saying they wish they were his girlfriend and so on, what is often said. I told them it is not a bed of roses to be dating a musician or singer or celeb as I did that 35 years ago and it is no picnic. It can be fun for a while but they are always on tour or away from home as they are busy building their career while their music is selling and striking while the iron is hot. But it is not a good time for a steady relationship, for darn sure. I found that out. And this old lady did it when there was no emails or text messages and just expensive long distance phone calls from the road,it takes a tough woman and I was just too young and while Scotty will not be doing the drugs and drinking, it is still a fast paced life with tons of women coming on to him, guaranteed.

  • MayMirabella

Scotty will sing to the grandmothers and Lauren to the mothers.
And it will be very sentimental and emotional ..may be the most emotional , tear filled finale in Idol history with tons of shots of their moms and grandmas. LOL

  • Lucy1234

Those complaining, obviously don’t listen to country radio. Martina McBride has a song out about teenage daughters. George Strait recently had a hit about the miracle of birth of his child. Carrie had her hit Mama’s song. I think Brad Paisley also had one out about his son. It is very common in country music to sing about family.

I don’t only think they chose songs to sell to the AI crowd but also songs that might have a chance at country radio.

  • SpenserJ

Update: According to Idol Chatter, Carrie Underwood will pick a song for Lauren Alaina and George Strait will choose for Scotty McCreery. No word on what those songs are.

Aw, I think that’s sweet that Carrie picked a song for Lauren. I’m interested to know what it is.

I am not complaining as it is absolutely brilliant for these two and they will get the votes, no doubt about that.

It is not my cup of tea but I applaud them both on their song choices as it got them to the finale.

  • SpenserJ

Those complaining, obviously don’t listen to country radio. Martina McBride has a song out about teenage daughters.

I do not object to songs about family (and I find Martina McBride awesome in a thousand different ways). I object to trite, crappy songs about family that have already been recorded on a legendary Idol failure of a CD. I think if they could find an original for Scotty, they could have found an original for Lauren.

And, I wanted her coronation single to have spunk. So, I’m disappointed with the choice.

  • songsungblue

So Carrie and George Strait are picking? LOL. This is all starting to make so much sense to me….Country Idol has been in the plans for a long, long time.

Hey good luck kids! Being a pawn has never been so lucrative! ;)

  • Lucy1234

Carrie Underwood will pick a song for Lauren Alaina and George Strait will choose for Scotty McCreery.

That is interesting. I wonder if Carrie is also going to sing with Lauren at the finale and George possibly with Scotty. I think that would benefit Lauren if that is the case because more AI fans are familiar with Carrie and she appeals more to the younger crowd.

  • sooziequsie

Wow, what a coup for AI. Not only Carrie U, but the King of Country himself, George Strait. I’m curious if they will chose one of their own songs.

George has a knack for picking a good song. I might have to watch, lol. I didn’t like what Scotty did with I Cross My Heart, so we will see. I bet it’ll be fairly traditional. ;-)

Personally, I think Lauren would benefit from mentoring by Carrie, but truly Lauren’s skills are not suited to Carrie’s music.

Ok Nigel, my TV will be turned on AI Tuesday, but I can’t guarantee it will stay on AI. Wednesday, tho….. !!!

  • Trina

I am willing to wager at the end of her song she sobs “I love you, mama” :crys:

LMAO *tears* If Scotty tearfully shouts “I love you grandma’ I might keel over.

If they really want Lauren to win someone needs to remind her of Carrie’s tearful finale moment where she busted out that 15 second glorynote in Angels Brought Me Here then stared weeping. I’m sure stagemommy is coaching her.

The telling point to me is even with the country vote split, no one else could crack the top 2. Nashville Idol looks like good business to me.

  • CCOREY2034

This finale will probably draw lots of viewers because all the south will be tuned in watching it. Honestly these songs are exactly what I thought would be used. They sound like sweet safe songs. Now we know that Lauren and Scotty got their own singles, then Haley singing her own original song on finale is not unfair. Wouldn’t it be AWESOME IF OUR RESIDENT BADASS Reinhart KILLS Lauren and Scotty with her original song. Apparently we all heard Haley is a force to be recokned with, she has no problems standing up to people for her own music. That’s why I have always loved our little spitfire. What are the chances OUR LITTLE BADASS kills these two with her original song? I am tuning in for the finale just to see Haley do her performance.

  • Jon

I’m only complaining about this final 2 because they’re both so young, predictable, and are the same genre. I almost fear the standards for next season because this to me is saying that you can go far if you’re young, cute and stay safe in your confort zone. I think I have the biggest problem with Lauren because she never gave a memorable performance that really showed that she pushed herself to the limits.

  • MayMirabella

So Carrie and George Strait are picking? LOL. This is all starting to make so much sense to me….Country Idol has been in the plans for a long, long time.

Nigel wanted a teen girl to win this year or if not, a teen guy. He got his wish as a teen will win. He kept saying early in the season, that they lowered the age as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus found success at a young age.

So Idol finally gets their teen country Bieber or teen county Swift.

My guess is next year, there will be more pimping of power singers or R and B Singers, or rock singers, etc….since the focus this year is all country finale..Nigel will want to change it up so he is not labeled Country Idol.

  • sooziequsie

I think Brad Paisley also had one out about his son. It is very common in country music to sing about family.

He also had a fairly humorous song about internet social websites. lmao. Brad is genius.

  • MayMirabella

Because my mother has passed on, I will admit I will probably get teary eyed thinking of her as not a day goes by when I do not miss her. Jacob’s song about fathers had me a blubbering mess thinking of my late dad.

I hope Scotty sings with George and didn’t Brad sing about Ticks too.

I object to trite, crappy songs about family that have already been recorded on a legendary Idol failure of a CD.

I’m sure more songs were submitted but maybe this song resonated more with Lauren – you never know. You have to choose a song that works on different levels. Look how many songs Kris recorded for his album but the one they chose was a cover of an unreleased song and that song is Kris’ only hit. Like I said the song was released on an album that nobody heard. It will be a new song to almost everyone, except may KLC. Would they have time to write any original songs for any of them?

  • ptslittlecomment

The telling point to me is even with the country vote split, no one else could crack the top 2. Nashville Idol looks like good business to me.

The thing is, I don’t think all of their voters are country fans. I think they may appeal to Idol voters for many other reasons than genre. This whole Country Teen top 2 thing could merely be a coincidence.

Either way – Nigel won’t let it happen again next year anyway. (Probably won’t see a country contestant crack the top 12 LOL).

  • jpfan

Lauren’s song is just ok. Not exactly a vote of confidence to give her a cast off )KLC song. Of course we haven’t heard the other original songs. They could be dreck as well.

  • tomr

Not that I believe IdolChatter but does that mean that it will be a Carrie song and a George song? Regardless, advantage Lauren because many Idol viewers doen’t even know who George Strait is and probably couldn’t even name one of his songs.

  • CCOREY2034

This isn’t the first Idol has passed off material from one contestant to another. Tamyra Grey who hasn’t had much success has stated practically Fantasia’s whole album was foisted on her two years before Fantasia. So songs are passed around and around. I think Scotty will do really well, have high selling album. I think Lauren will just do okay, she is more lucky if she can draw Kellie Pickler numbers, she will never get Carrie numbers.

    Kellie Picker sold;

Small Town Girl: Close to 900,000
    Kellie Pickler: about 450,000.

Does any think Lauren will even struggle with matching Pickler?

  • kcostell

If anyone can stop Scotty’s Long Black Idol Train, it’s Carrie Underwood making an appearance for Lauren. But will it be enough?

  • callmecrazy

Unless Scotty is holding/playing a guitar, will he be showing us with his hands how big he loves us…? I love you this big….no this big*hands spread wider*…NO THIS BIG.

  • Lucy1234

Adam barely has Kellie Pickler numbers lol

  • iluvai

I just listened to the KLC song. I wanted to like it. It’s not bad, but with all the nasty about Lauren’s mom, it’s just fuel for the fire. Oh well. Hopefully Lauren will do a nice job with it.

  • NOLA

Update: According to Idol Chatter, Carrie Underwood will pick a song for Lauren Alaina and George Strait will choose for Scotty McCreery. No word on what those songs are.

Very cool, as on Idol board, Carrie is one of Lauren’s Idols and George is one of Scottys.

  • Ringo

LOL. Lauren’s mom picked a hell of a song for her!

  • sooziequsie

I hope Scotty sings with George

Doubt it. GS rarely duets, and rarely leaves the ranch. Personally, I surprised they got him to do this. It would be nice if he mentored Scotty a bit and told him to cut the weird faces. GS, in his early days, rarely smiled on stage, but when he did he brought down the house.

and didn’t Brad sing about Ticks too.

    Probably, lol.

  • MayMirabella

Either way – Nigel won’t let it happen again next year anyway. (Probably won’t see a country contestant crack the top 12 LOL).

I agree with you. There will be fleet of buses headed for any country singer next year. LOL! If Scotty wins, Nigel will be wanting a girl to win and go with another genre. Plus I wonder if the judges will feel some pressure on who to put through to the top 24 and who to chose as wildcards? I would guess they would not repeats. That is my thought. I do not think Idol can escape completely the cute guy thing though and that often stops a girl from winning. But it is almost impossible to put through unattractive guys , a few slip through based on talent and stage presence. As often the good looking guys, not all the time , can have the confidence

I’m thinking on what they’ll sing as their Redux song choice

Scotty: “You’ve Got a Friend”- To me, it’s his only performance that was close to an actual moment or “Gone”- It was pretty good and if they start off the show with their encore performances, this one can easily start off the show

Lauren: “Anyway”- Also her only performance that was close to a moment that she ever got.

Thinking about this makes me so bummed. I always envisioned Haley redoing “House of the Rising Sun” on that big stage. Sigh

  • MayMirabella

Adam barely has Kellie Pickler numbers lol

Worldwide he does but also he has not been out there with a solo career as long as Pickler either..she has been there since what..Season 5 was it? And usually country music sells very well with a large audience who will buy the music. Where Adam does well is selling out concerts, I think because people like his shows as he does put on quite a show.

  • tomr

As hard as he tries, Adam will never be as pretty as Kellie.

  • sagi

LOL. Lauren’s mom picked a hell of a song for her!

Word!! That thought actually occurred to me, as well! LOL You know she wants recognition for all her effort to get Lauren where she is today! :D :D

  • Lucy1234

I just listened to the KLC song. I wanted to like it. It’s not bad, but with all the nasty about Lauren’s mom, it’s just fuel for the fire. Oh well. Hopefully Lauren will do a nice job with it.

I never did understand what Lauren’s mom did. Is it just that some didn’t like how she looked. Anyway, those hating on Lauren’s mom, were not going to vote for Lauren or buy her music anyway so no loss there.

  • randomjoe

I like Kristy Lee Cook’s version, what a beautiful voice. Can Lauren top this? I wish Kristy’s version had been on the radio as wow, she has a gorgeous voice.

In genre, KLC is pretty good and she can sing a wider range of songs than LA(S)

    Let me get this straight…

Lauren (top 2) doesn’t get an original song; but
    Haley (top 3) does?

I think it is actually a good song for her but yeah….. wrong, wrong, wrong. No way should she get a retread and #3 get something brand spanking new.

  • MayMirabella

Any chance they can get Eric Burdon to come and perform this with Haley for the Finale show Wednesday..wonder if that is in the works..but then I was reading he was touring…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk

  • Jon

    Let me get this straight…

Lauren (top 2) doesn’t get an original song; but
    Haley (top 3) does?

First of all, Lauren probably had a list to pick from. She is the one that picked her single knowing that it’s been done.

Second, who says that Haley is doing a completely original song? She had to listen to songs to pick the one she wanted. It’s not like it was written for her. I’m sure it’s basically no different if haley made it into Top 2. Where Scotty and Lauren are getting signed for sure, Haley has to fight to prove to producers with this single to get signed and record an album. If it doesn’t do well, it won’t be released.

  • sgills

    So….

    1. Carrie Picks for Lauren; George picks for Scotty
    2. Lauren and Scotty pick for themselves? (Reprise something earlier from the season?)
    3. Coronation Songs?

I thought at some point, Nigel or Simon or someone was supposed to pick for the top 2? Did they just change that as soon as they realized it was Country versus Country, or is that the “coronation” category?

Its hard to judge Kristy’s song for Lauren since Lauren’s voice is better, and has such a unique tone to it (whereas Kristy’s is really plain to me). I imagine with a different (more current?) arrangement and with Lauren’s cute persona it’ll come off much better in her version.

Is Scotty’s song written anew? If so, it looks like Idol took the time to write Scotty a newer song and then didn’t for Lauren… as if they needed to further shove him down our throats like they’ve been doing lately.

  • Lucy1234

I think it is actually a good song for her but yeah….. wrong, wrong, wrong. No way should she get a retread and #3 get something brand spanking new.

Kris Allen didn’t do too bad with his retread, much better than any of the originals on his album. Isn’t David Cook’s new single off his new album a retread? Jerrod Neiman, a new country artist, just got his first #1 country song with yes, you guessed it, a retread.

  • kcostell

If you had a choice between a previously recorded (but effectively still unknown and new) song and “No Boundaries”, which would you pick?

  • SpenserJ

I still say we don’t know if Haley’s getting a new song, or if she’s getting a retread as well.

We’re assuming Scotty’s song is new because no one can find it anywhere. But who knows, maybe that one isn’t new either.

And, I just want to say that I get the comparison to Kris’s retread song. But, where that analogy falls apart for me is that LLWD is a REALLY, really good song. And, this one, just is not good at all.

  • tomr

Not inviting Lee is really classless. There is no loyalty on Idol. Have to believe that is one of the reasons Simon left. He gets credit for being loyal to both Cheryl and Paula. Which former winners have already performed this season?

You so get to win this argument! LMAO

  • CCOREY2034

Why do you think David Cook’s Time of My Life was the biggest hit and the best coronation song? All of these songs end up being so lame. I just remember the crowning moment with Cook winning and that was the most exciting finale because either could have won. Then Cook singing the TOML it was so good. Do you think it was because David sang it better then it was? DC is only Idol who had a platinum hit with their cornation song. Why do u think that was?

  • Incipit

Isn’t David Cook’s new single off his new album a retread?

Lucy1234 Nope. It sure isn’t. “The Last Goodbye” is an original song, written by David and Ryan Tedder, for this album. No idea where you would get that idea, David wrote on every song on “This Loud Morning”.

But Coronaries are in a different category – although they are usually originals – they also frequently bite…and the use of covers and/or retreads hasn’t affected their success ratio in a good way, at all.

IF this is true (Big Disclaimer) tossing these to the Top2 has the feeling of ‘washing our hands of them’ with the least amount of trouble and expense – and turning them over to Universal’s in-house Country label, whoever that may be.

TPTB have mentally and financially moved on to Season11.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • MayMirabella

Wow Kristy Lee Cook has improved a lot since her Idol season. I was listening to her on You Tube and the person above is right, she is phenomenal on Broken Wing…her breath control is amazing and that is something Lauren will learn and need to learn as time goes on. As I am not sure Lauren could hold a note that long like Kristy does. If nothing else, Kristy has amazing breath control. I was not impressed with her during her season on Idol but I am now.

  • Jon

With Carrie and George picking songs for them, does this kind of make way with them duetting with Lauren and Scotty in the Finale?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Wow, not digging this song. I’m guessing she had a few to pick from. Maybe it will work out for her.

  • windmills

J9BT: Wow – TPTB are really trying to get Lauren to win, aren’t they?

kcostell: If anyone can stop Scotty’s Long Black Idol Train, it’s Carrie Underwood making an appearance for Lauren. But will it be enough?

This is what came to my mind. It’s a little weird to have a former Idol picking for one finalist but not the other because it’s an invitation to vote for the finalist the former Idol is picking for. It’d have been better either for Carrie to pick for both or have George Strait and Lee Ann Womack (also on MCA) or Reba to pick for Scotty and Lauren respectively.

Carrie should pick a Keith Urban song like Days Go By for LaurenA – uptempo, positive, fun. Reba’s Why Haven’t I Heard From You would also be good but it’d be better for LaurenA to sing something where there isn’t a female template for it already.

I wonder if George will pick Jamey Johnson’s In Color for Scotty. I’m sure Scotty’s been trying to get that one cleared. I still think it’d be fun if George picked Clint Black’s Good Run Of Bad Luck for Scotty.

I don’t think Like My Mother Does is a great choice for LaurenA and I have a hard time believing there wasn’t a Hillary Scott cowrite or a Carrie cowrite that didn’t make their albums that wasn’t better and more radio friendly.

  • MayMirabella

I am looking forward to Wednesday to see Jack Black and Casey and who performs with Haley and with Paul and who gets solo and what guest artists will be there and who they sing with…that is the best part of idol all year for me.

I still think Queen with Adam and Kris was fantastic, loved it. So each year, I look forward to who sings with whom and the surprises that come.

I would love it if James, Steven Tyler , and Adam sang a number and blew the roof off the place, how cool…for this old rocker chic..LOL>LOL

  • sgills

I still think having a Nichols song (whether its new or not) is an advantage – sometimes a great song can sway a person to vote rather than the singer singing it (at this point we can all admit that both of them are talented, whether you like their type of music or not, so it will also come down to whether the song is catchy or not).

That being said, if Scotty’s song is written by someone who wrote some really great country songs – (i.e. Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw, I’ll Think of a Reason Later – Leann Womack, not too mention for Reba, Trace Adkins, Alan Jackson, etc). *Though I’m still uncertain whether his song is the one written by Nichols.

LOL. I’m pretty sure all that was pre-Idol. Her Idol season was a case of what happens when you are forced to go so far outside your box. [Though Debra Byrd said her "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was killer though she got kicked off before she could do it].

People must think that a songwriter can pump out a brand new tune at the drop of a hat…write the words, arrange it, form a bridge, figure out the music, etc. etc.

Of course the idolettes are getting off the shelf material. Some stuff may have been released…like Kris LLWD, or written for someone else like Adam’s WWFM, or just been sitting in the demo bin waiting to match-up with someone with the right voice and personality for the song. I’ll bet a week’s pay that not one of the idolettes is recording something specifically written for them….they are just choosing from songs in some song writers’ catalogue.

poor lauren… all she needed was a song about tornados.. its not happening for her.

  • HR

Idol having their current reigning country superstar choose a song for Lauren and a country legend choose one for Scotty does not showcase a lack of interest in these two. If anyone is still holding onto the words of only a few DJ’s they might consider this a subtle endorsement by people who do have influence in the genre. Carrie could be excused out of obligation but George Strait has no need to do this if he doesn’t wish to. George is an interesting choice as he sings the type of material I’d expect Scotty to pursue.

Lauren’s song here doesn’t sound any different then some of the songs Carrie has co-written. That Kristy Lee sung it first doesn’t matter. A lot of songs get passed around, recorded and never heard.

  • keware

Has anyone thought that perhaps Scotty is singing with Carrie on Wednesday night? And maybe Lauren will get a male country star to sing with?

  • Elliegrll

I can’t judge this song, it may become another “That’s Who I Am”, because Lauren can sing this a million times better than Kristy Lee.

  • Lucy1234

    Like My Mother Does

    Writers: Nathan Chapman/Nikki Williams/Liz Rose

Nathan Chapman is an American record producer who works in the field of country music. He is known primarily for working with Taylor Swift, having produced her albums Taylor Swift, Fearless and Speak Now.

Liz Rose (born in Dallas, Texas) is an American country music songwriter best known for her work with Taylor Swift. She has co-written several of Swift’s songs and singles, including “White Horse,” “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “You Belong with Me,” all of which won her and Swift a Grammy Award in 2010.

Looks like this song was definately written for a teen girl.

OMG, Carrie is in on the Kristy Lee Cooke curse! Does this seal the deal for Scotty, or does it somehow give the edge to Lauren to perform Kristy’s song?

  • sgills

Has anyone thought that perhaps Scotty is singing with Carrie on Wednesday night? And maybe Lauren will get a male country star to sing with?

I was actually hoping Lauren would sing with Steven Tyler – “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing,” but I think it would also be great to have Carrie and Lauren sing together (maybe “Does He Love You,” or something of that nature).

However, the more I think about it, Scotty technically could sing something of Carrie’s with her… (What Can I Say since they’ve already done I Told You So) – but I don’t know if they’d re-use a song Lauren & Scotty have already done or use yet another one of Carrie’s (although why wouldn’t they, considering she is a product of Idol – why not give their top selling Idol more publicity on one of her songs)….

I like this guy Matt Bjorke – a country blogger. He has always been very supportive of country idols. Below article is on Scotty and Lauren and want they need to do to be successful. Interestingly he pairs Lauren with Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift’s producer who co-wrote Lauren’s single) as producer among others. He seems to like them both.

From the very beginning of this season both were stand-outs, Scotty with both his deep, anti-Bieber vocal delivery to his Alfred E. Newman prankster-like awe-shucks look and Lauren with her ‘she doesn’t even know how good she is’ approach and fantastic (at times) voice that is parts Reba-like twang, Miranda-like edge, Martina-like power and Dolly-like whimsy. There’s really nobody except perhaps Carrie Underwood like her on the show.

Carrie posted on her fan club messageboard that the song she chose for Lauren is one she really wanted to sing on the show but never got the chance.

So… no clue there, haha! It’s not even 100% guaranteed to be a country song considering Carrie’s musical tastes and preference for mixing things up.

  • Lucy1234

I’m excited to see which song Carrie chose for Lauren. I would be fine if it was a non-country song. I would like her to do at least one song that would appeal to the non-country fans. I think Lauren is much better at singing outside her genre than Scotty. Scotty does not seem to have much of a range.

  • McCreerian

I wonder if both Scotty and Lauren will be dueting with Carrie-kinda like how Crystal and Lee did with Joe Crocker.

  • Lucy1234

It does seem like they don’t have many big name artists showing up for the finale to perform with the Idols. I don’t believe Gaga is performing with any Idols and probably not Bono either. So far the only name we have is Jack Black and I didn’t even know he sang.

  • tomr

McCreerian…I really believe that you are right about that!

Interesting. Either Byrd or Michael Orland in the latest vocal coaches article at EW mentioned that Carrie’d wanted to do a song where she could yodel but never got around to it. Then again Carrie also wanted to do a Quiet Riot song, lolz!

If nothing else that says the song Carrie chose for LaurenA came out before 2005. Dixie Chicks Wide Open Spaces would be a good one. Trisha Yearwood’s She’s In Love With A Boy would be great too but LaurenA’s not going to outsing Trisha on one of her signature songs.

Days Go By by Keith Urban still qualifies but that doesn’t seem like a song Carrie would’ve wanted to do on AI or a song that wouldn’t clear.

I wish George’s team would give some hints on what he’s looking for from Scotty!

  • Lucy1234

Someone mentioned the other day about the support for both Scotty and Lauren from fans of both on twitter, which makes me think the fans will support both of them in their post Idol careers. This is the kind of stuff I am seeing – not the hating between fanbases. I find it refreshing.

OK, the song choice for Lauren creeps me out a bit AND makes me laugh … but like that Best in Show laugh …. because we’ve all seen the clips of Lauren and flashing to her mom and (probably aunt) in the audience. they all have the same hair! blond on top and black below.
in fact, didn’t mj make some crack about them getting a group rate at the salon?! that was all i could think about when i listened to that song. lolol!

  • Jon

If Lauren is doing a song that Carrie wanted to do, I’m curious if it’s a song that involves some yodeling. In an interview with one of the vocal coaches, they said Carrie always wanted to do a song where she can yodel but never gotten a chance to.

  • Jon

I’ll bet Scotty will sing Josh Turner’s “Your Man” (BabyLockDemDoors)

That’s what I originally thought. But I think it has to be a song they did during the live shows. That song is what made Scotty so popular. It’s kind of disappointing that song is his most memorable performance all season long and he only sang it before the live rounds.

  • windmills

I think and hope Scotty’s smart enough to know singing a Josh Turner song will do him no favors because the main source of skepticism of him in the country world comes from seeing Scotty as a poor man’s Josh Turner. Scotty’s reprise choice will probably be dictated by what George Strait chose for him. If George picked an uptempo song then Scotty could reprise a ballad like You’ve Got A Friend or Letters From Home. But if George picked a ballad then I bet Scotty reprises Gone.

I like to think that I have a pretty good memory for idol related things, but I have no idea on what song Carrie wished she had done on AI.

IMO it’s wrong to believe that Carrie is meant to be an advantage for Lauren.

TPTB didn’t ask for Danny Gokey or Josh Gracin to pick for Scotty, they asked to “the king of country music”, someone who has more number ones than any other country artist and sold more album than all AI alumnis combined.

Since it’s likely a song during the live shows (past Top 12 as was the case for the past two years), Scotty should pick either Gone or You’ve Got A Friend. And for God’s sake, if they do You’ve Got A Friend, rerecord it the way it was done on the show >_>.

Lauren should do Candle in the Wind or You Keep Me Hangin’ On. PLEASE do not do Anyway. Wasn’t a huge fan of that one.

I’m a little scared that Carrie chose a song for Lauren. For some reason, I feel like that gives her a bigger chance X_X.

Valentin432: IMO it’s wrong to believe that Carrie is meant to be an advantage for Lauren.

The way I was thinking about it, it might be an advantage in that Carrie’s fans from AI might be more likely to vote for LaurenA by association.

That having been said George’s seal of approval is obviously a good thing for Scotty in the real world and Scotty obviously got the person who’s already a legend and the person who’s accomplished more picking for him. There just isn’t an obvious connection between that and votes on AI IMO.

  • Vanille

Carrie is the first idol to ever pick a song for another idol.. o.o

I do agree it might give lauren Alaina an advantage with the young teen voters.. none of them r gonna know who george straight is because he has been out of the lime light for quite some time… Carrie is on all the country shows currently and is one of countrys most popular stars..

Lauren should do Candle in the Wind or You Keep Me Hangin’ On. PLEASE do not do Anyway. Wasn’t a huge fan of that one.

I can’t even remember her singing You Keep Me Hangin’ On. Candle in the Wind wasn’t even her best. I feel that’s too sleepy of a song for the bigger stage. I’m confident she’s doing “Anyway” only because they used it in her homecoming package and I feel she will be advised by coaches and producers that Anyway was her best vocal performance. I feel she can do well with that song on the bigger stage than anything else she sang on the show. It’s that or maybe “Flat on The Floor” if her other songs are too lay back.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Yes, but Adam would have her looking more like a drag queen than she already does sometimes.

For a teen-aged country girl, less is definitely more. I understand stage make up for people in theatre. But she’s not just performing for a live audience, she’s on camera. Whole different ball game. Pretty girl doesn’t need to look 40.

ETA: Maybe next year Jordin can be the stylist adviser to the teen contestants. Didn’t always like her outfits, but she always looked “fresh” like a teen should.

I’m confident she’s doing “Anyway” only because they used it in her homecoming package and I feel she will be advised by coaches and producers that Anyway was her best vocal performance.

But she just sang that two weeks ago and we heard her sing it again last week. I always say you should reach further back than your recent hit so that it has more of an impact. Again, it depends what Carrie picks for her (and it better not be yodeling. Tough to do and tough to sell).

Are Scotty and Carrie wearing the same shirt? LOL. They should have coordinated outfits in advance. Carrie is always so elegant in her performances. It’s great to see her looking casual and hanging.

  • MayMirabella

I think the exact opposite. Adam is really into fashion and style and I think he would get her tone it down on the makeup and not wear the evening gowns.

But she just sang that two weeks ago and we heard her sing it again last week. I always say you should reach further back than your recent hit so that it has more of an impact. Again, it depends what Carrie picks for her (and it better not be yodeling. Tough to do and tough to sell).

I’m probably not giving Lauren any credit here, but I thinking she doesn’t know better than to pick something further back. This is the girl who picked a Kristy Lee Cook song as her single. Also, she’s the most predictable contestant, along with Scotty.

Here’s hoping she proves me wrong but I’m not counting on it.

  • CRB

This wasn’t the worst song on Kristy Lee Cooks album.

Maybe 10-15 years ago. Prolly about the time she was born. Her mom just never updated it. I face book friends from high school who still have “wings” and spiral perms.

A friend of mine has a theory that people keep hairstyles from the last time they were “cool.”

  • dancingqueen

Not a Carrie fan, so, her picking a song, just solidifies me not watching until Wednesday. On top of it, Lauren gets a KLC song, from a failed CD – hilarious idol!

  • gabriel oak

An hour of country songs. Forget it. Zzzzzzzzzz

And then a finale with several songs by the final two, more country. More Zzzzzzzz

  • Buffynut

Not sure if this means anything, but there are still tickets available for Tuesday’s show. Wednesday’s show is full though.

If true, that’s funny and very telling. Someone should let Lee know about Tuesday ;)

Is he even going to be seeing her? Lol.

It is true because I have the coveted voucher e-mail for tickets. I chose to go Wednesday. Those were gone within a few hours. But if I click on the Tuesday ticket link, it is still open with tickets available.

You know, I like James but his post tour interviews are annoying to me. He’s going to put out some HAC soft rock album that will have about 50K in sales and THEN lets hear what he has to say. Don’t get me wrong, I am hoping James goes alt rock and does some cool stuff but he thinks he is the bomb. It will be sad when reality hits him in the eyes. But at least he will be able to support his family.

And yes, I so want to tweet Lauren to ditch those awful extensions. She looks 30 instead of sweet 16.

  • Ratna12

Now I’m scared of what song Carrie picked for Lauren.
Carrie can reach the highest notes, Lauren can’t (yet).

I love “Anyway” , but whatever it is, I hope one song will be upbeat. The song from top 13 was really good for Lauren I thought.

  • Grammie Kari

I suggested to Nigel that he get Carrie to mentor, but it seems she’s just for Lauren. However, George Strait is like A Gawd; Scotty is very, very lucky! Should be an interesting show.

I do wish James the very best with his career!

  • Nativenewyorker

Since it’s likely a song during the live shows (past Top 12 as was the case for the past two years), Scotty should pick either Gone or You’ve Got A Friend. And for God’s sake, if they do You’ve Got A Friend, rerecord it the way it was done on the show >_>.

These are my choices for Scotty. No question that “You’ve Got a Friend” has to be done the way it was on the live show.

I also think that having George Strait choose your song is quite an honor for Scotty. Country fans are the ones voting and they know this man for sure, so I have to believe that it can only help Scotty.

Good for Lauren for getting Carrie to choose her song. She won’t trump George Strait. I think it’s good for both of them.

This. James would have benefited from some good honest critiques of his performances. The talent is there, but he constantly got a pat on the back even when he sounded awful. Which he did every time he moved.. he lost the pitch.

If there was anyone thrown under the bus this season it was the kids who were not given honest critiques so they could work on their weaknesses. This includes Lauren and Scotty. The only one to show improvement was Haley who started out with bottom 3′s and ended with 3 consecutive standing O’s.

There. Got that off my chest.. LOL.

Can’t wait to see what Carrie and George come up with for the kids. I can’t guarantee 100% that my TV will stay on idol Tues night, but it will on Wednesday.

  • NOLA

Wow, yall, we are almost there. Just wanted to say I have enjoyed this season immensely. It’s been a hoot here on the blogs. Thanks to mj for her dedication to Idol and giving us all a place to hang.

Good luck to Lauren and Scotty tomorrow. I do love them both; I just happen to love Scotty more.

    GEAUX SCOTTY!

  • sooziequsie

It would be cool if GS made an appearance for AI, too. I doubt he’d perform or do a duet with the idols, but even a taped appearance about what and why on Scotty’s song would be huge brownie points for Scotty. (Bummer, too, cuz I’m not a Scotty fan, but I am a GS fan, lol)

  • Jon

Enjoyed this season too. Even though this is the season that frustrated me the most, it was a solid season opposed to last season. What i’ll always remember about this season will be the fact it was the season of country, gowlers, and horrible critiques.

It was also the season of the faces. Casey and Scotty pulling faces in most of their performances, Stefano eye effing America in his “Closer” performance, Jacob’s faces, the faces Haley and James made when they were eliminated.

What I’ll also remember this season is the huge comeback of Haley Reinhart. To me, she’s what American Idol is all about. I’ll always remember her performances more than anyone else’s. She turned from near 11th place finisher to being the one to give the most moments this season. She turned me from a hater to a die hard fan. Supporting her gor life.

I’m rooting for Scotty over Lauren. Even though i feel the show needs a female winner, I just don’t think Lauren deserves to win at all. Should of been Haley with Scotty.

  • sgills

Definitely very interested to find out what Carrie will choose for Lauren – and considering that it’s supposed to be a song Carrie wished she would have had a chance to sing herself on the show (and also taking into account that Lauren has already tackled most of the popular female country stars – Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Shania Twain, Sara Evans, LeAnn Womack, Carrie herself) – My guess is that it could end up being ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Dolly Parton – and seeing how that is a very popular song, it could be a good thing for Lauren. I can’t recall if the “Dolly” version (instead of Whitney’s) has been sung on the show before by anyone….

  • Jon

Just want to say good luck to both Lauren and Scotty. Lauren needs the luck more

  • Suzanne

Syesha sang “I will always love you.”

Geo Strait and Carrie Underwood aren’t comparable. Loretta Lynn or even Reba Mcintyre.

Also, isn’t Geo Strait, like, 100??

  • blueski

Oh no!!!! I don’t care for that song. Don’t see it as a song I would want to listen to over and over. And over and over. Which is what it takes for a single to be successful. I mean listening to a song on you tube and hitting the replay button over and over. Its not going to happen with this song. Sorry.

  • blueski

As for George’s pick for Scotty. For some reason I keep hearing Keith Whitley.

  • NOLA

Also, isn’t Geo Strait, like, 100??

Sure hope not, being as I am 6 years his Sr.

  • sooziequsie

Also, isn’t Geo Strait, like, 100??

Just turned 58. Not quite 100, except maybe to the teens.

Carrie would not pick “I will always love you” for Lauren or anyone. It’s been overdone. I’m pretty sure Carrie will pick a song that suits Lauren best. I’m hoping Carrie mentors Lauren for the song, too.

  • abbysee

I’m pretty sure Carrie will pick a song that suits Lauren best. I’m hoping Carrie mentors Lauren for the song, too.

Now if she sings it for her too, she’s a lock, lol.

  • McCreerian

I think they are both at an advantage-Scotty gets something from one of the biggest males in country music of all time and Lauren gets something from the most successful idol alum and one of the biggest female country singers out there. I think neither one has an advantage over the other.

  • sagi

No, Lauren definitely has the advantage. Carrie has millions of fans, and a great deal of them are from the Idol viewing audience. Carrie picking for Lauren is sure to lure many Carrie’s fans to vote for Lauren by association. George Strait is a huge success, but likely doesn’t have a large AI following. TPTB know this and are hoping this final night will pan out to give them the results they want. They have been saying since the beginning that Lauren is “the One” and they want to say I told you so and don’t want to have their foot in their mouths.

  • sagi

Also, I bet Lauren does the number she did of Carrie’s (can’t remember the title) for the past performance for an added boost!

  • weareallinnocent

I’m pretty sure Carrie will pick a song that suits Lauren best. I’m hoping Carrie mentors Lauren for the song, too.

    lol

  • Kirsten

No, Lauren definitely has the advantage. Carrie has millions of fans, and a great deal of them are from the Idol viewing audience. Carrie picking for Lauren is sure to lure many Carrie’s fans to vote for Lauren by association.

Plus, Carrie’s fans are voting machines. They know how to get it done. Who knows what George’s fans can do in the AI voting booth?

I can kind of see the dilemma. If you are going to have a legend in the business pick a song, how can you not go with your in-house legend Carrie? The fans will know her and it helps to boost her status as well. There is nobody else in 19′s country history that can rival her. The only other country Idols 19 has signed are Kellie, Gokey and Casey and none of them are close to being in her echelon. Josh, Phil and Bucky were signed by another label that no longer exists.

So, even though I couldn’t name a George Strait song if you held a gun to my head (“Uh, that song that Scotty sang once from a movie?”), I even know that George is a massive legend in the biz.

I wonder if Scotty’s “Love You This Big” is directed towards his Mom too?

I bet it is directed to his Dad. These evil geniuses decided to have that theme months ago. The teen contestants can sing to their parents, Jacob and James can sing to their lost fathers (or mothers that raised them), Haley is already following in her mother’s footsteps, and so on.

I can totally hear how “Love You This Big”goes. It’s like the opposite of “In the Living Years” and “Cats in the Cradle”. I’m sure there is a song like it already, but this is a rich theme to mine.

First verse: I remember when I was young, skinned my knee and lost my toy, you were always there, to pick me up, blah, blah

Chorus: Took me in your arms, dah-dah-dah-da-dah, and you said “Love You this Big” (emphasis on Big, probably something like F-E-F-G – although maybe even lower for Scotty).

Second Verse: In my teens, I tried to pull away, busy with my friends, blah-blah-blah, maybe some teen hurt, you were always there, to pick me up, blah, blah

Third Verse: At my wedding, my wife was so beautiful, we were all happy, blah-blah-blah, and just before I went up the aisle

Fourth Verse: Now you are old, blah-blah-sucks-to-be-old-and-now-I’m-in-the-parent-role-blah

Chorus: I took you in my arms….dah-dah-dah-And I said “Love You This Big”

And everybody cries. Totally works as a country song.

  • Mary102

Dear god all of this makes me even more sure I’ll be missing tonight’s show. It really is country idol. Ugh. I’m all for variety – I was all for Scotty being in the finale, but Lauren and him both, and a show of all country – no thank you.

I’ll watch tomorrow for the cheese and fun, but not tonight.

After re-watching last week’s show on dvr recently I got even more depressed, tbh. I completely zoned out for Scotty and Lauren’s performances (which all pretty much ran together).

  • kelli

  • BootStar

(and it better not be yodeling. Tough to do and tough to sell).

You now have me fantasizing that Haley has some yodeling on her winner’s single. I love a good yodeler!

I’m starting to think American Idol is going to morph into a Bigger Badder-Assed Nashville Star. Might as well play to your most loyal and consistent viewers and let the others mosey on over to X-Factor.

Not sure what to make of this Kristy Lee Cook do-over, but didn’t I read somewhere that Scotty and Lauren got to choose their singles from among three choices? Maybe Lauren just likes this treacly dreck. And Carrie was her choice, as well, wasn’t she? Makes sense to me, just like George Strait is logical for Scotty. Old Country vs. New Country. Hmm … Maybe Lauren can pull this off after all! (Oh, who am I kidding? Scotty has had this in the bag since his audition.)

ETA: I wonder if they’ll use Kristy Lee as a body double for Lauren on the cover of her album? Wouldn’t put anything past some of these decision-making bastards!

Lauren has a twitter party this morning and someone asked was she happy with the song that Carrie picked for her. Lauren replied and said yes it’s a fun song.

”Fun song” is a good clue to know that it’s not a ballad.

  • jazzyjen508

I’m excited about carrie picking lauren’s song. She is one of the top country pop artists out there right now so I believe that will really help lauren gain support from fans and grow as a current artist no matter who wins. Even though I have heard the name george straight before I don’t know much about his music but I can easily assume he will help scotty a lot too in his chosen country path. As for the singles. I really think it is unfair that a people in the top 3 and top 9 2 for that matter get to sing original songs when someone in the top 2 doesn’t. I also don’t think it’s fair that one top 2 contestant gets a original song and the other one doesn’t. Be consistent judges/Producers! with all that being said I love both lauren and scotty and I want them both to be successful.
