Saturday Night Live - Season 39

Lady Gaga not only performed on tonight’s Saturday Night Live (Nov 17), but she hosted too, appearing in most of the skits. Her inner theater geek came out to play as she mostly played exaggerated versions of herself, and/or riffed on her public persona.

The cold open poked fun at the scandal revolving around the crack smoking mayor of Toronto.

In Lady Gaga’s opening monologue, she turns her hit “Applause” into an ode to the joys of pandering. Is there an entertainer who couldn’t relate? Also: Gaga can sang.

Waking up with Kimye finds Kanye West and his gal pal Kim K. hosting a talk show. It parodies Kanye’s narcissism, while painting Kim K. as a bubble head. Expect a Kanye twitter meltdown in 5..4..3..2..

Gaga plays a nerdy Apple genius bar employee who believes people who wear crazy outfits are hiding something. Heh.

Worst Cover Songs of All Time – Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows hawks the Worst Covers of All Time. Lady Gaga’s cover of Madonna’s “Express Yourself” is her singing “Born This Way.”

Spotlightz Acting Camp for Serious Kidz – Talent-free kids act out scenes from “Training Day” and “Breaking Bad”. Gaga as Forrest Gump’s mother is A+.

Talent Pageant – Gaga and John Milhiser as parents at a school recital are a little, shall we say, over invested.

Old Lady Gaga – Gaga is an eccentric senior citizen, long past her hey day as a pop star. Kenan Thompson plays a handyman who has no idea who she is. But he knows Beyonce! And One Direction.

Final Sketch – Old Lady Gaga – SNL 11-16-13 by IdolxMuzic

Gaga did a great job in hosting SNL. She was very funny in the skits.

  • nuygima

Well, the end of that last sketch was kind of depressing.

As a Torontonian who dropped thousands of flyers door-to-door in support of the guy who came second in the mayoral race that Rob Ford won, I appreciate the American media’s continuing focus on this story. The powers behind this man were so formidable (at every level of government) that the only Canadian paper that had the story was sitting on it for fear of libel and it is quite possible that it only came to light because Gawker published it.

Given his alcoholism, it is hard to understand how any of his friends and political allies could have been unaware of his problems. The fact that they continued to embrace him suggests a staggering lack of respect for the intelligence of the average voter. And why not? Ford won substantively.

Off my soapbox now and back to MJS big blogging. But thanks for the listen.

Whoa that Gaga opener was terrific. Gal can sing. De-constructing the song of herself and channeling Monroe and Minnelli to boot.

I’m really over Gaga. I’m not over impressed with her new music, and her antics are getting more and more frequent and lame. She is talented, but I prefer the original – Madonna, and not the copy. Just as Blondie fans prefer the original – Debbie Harry, over the copy – Madonna. I’d like Gaga more if her songs were better.

Don’t forget Marilyn Monroe, who they all channelled. I am a Blondie fan and prefer Madonna over Gaga, too, but last night Gaga did a good job and I think Applause is more than a little bit self-aware.

  • Candy

Wow, gotta say Gaga is crazy talented in both her music and art. Someone already said it, but Applause is a huge shout-out to her own self-awareness. It’s actually making me re-evaluate the whole public/rl persona issue with her. Maybe the best at performance art make sure you can’t quite tell the difference. w/e, gotta give her props for her talent and creativity.

  • Brenoga

one thing must be said: Gaga can SANG. Damn, girl.

  • ladymctech

I thought Lady Gaga did a great job acting, though I have to admit I am not fond of her new tunes.

  • geekygirl

Gaga has always been a fav of mine in SNL skits, she is a good sport about making fun of herself. Her “What’s My Name” and “Three way” With JTL are two of my favs of SNL and I’ve been a fan since the 70s. She is a smart lady if you ever see her interviewed, she’s fantastically talented in concert, and she is an artist. Her canvas is herself and the persona she creates for the public. Her Gaga image is gaga, but it is a media stunt, I doubt she hangs around her house in her crazy get ups. I am a big fan of her talent even tho she is a bit strange!

  • Porfivor Nixon

Gaga does her best in the skits, she is very good, but the writing for most part isn’t funny at all.

  • Amy Beth

It was something of a musician’s take on Sunset Boulevard–I’m ready for my close-up!

  • Karen C

I thought Lady Gaga was very good as host. Though it almost seemed like her performances were skits. I thought the show was pretty funny this week, which I haven’t thought in awhile.

  • mattywats

Hi MJ! Great blog! I’m an avid reader. One note: these are all considered sketches, not “skits.” I’m sure the comedy writers who write them will appreciate this small but important distinction. Thanks!

  • Niall

I liked her skits better than her singing (vocally she was great, I just didn’t like the R Kelly duet). Her over-invested parent skit and the Kimye bit was my favorite. Old Lady Gaga made me laugh but it was also kind of poignant. The “everyone has forgotten me” line was sadder than I think the show intended. LOL

  • macfae

Exactly. It was one of my favorites last night.

  • macfae

She was good in every skit from the opening routine to the end – favorites being the Apple store employee in the Kimye sketch and old lady Gaga. I appreciated her willingness to poke fun at herself.

Bobby Moynihan was great in the opening as the Toronto mayor. And I loved Taran Killam pun filled bit during Weekend Update – I’d post it but can’t find it online anywhere. .
    Over all a good show.
