    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ sweetheart Kelly Clarkson is ready to rock it
    With her third album, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹My December,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ the pop star finds a harder edge.

    LA TIMES

    Well…nobody will ever accuse her of being humble.

    “Men have always been emotional singers,” she said. “There are only a few select women who have actually carried that off. Like Patsy Cline à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ she’s great. She’s not a technical singer. She slides around. Aretha slides around. There are these technical singers in my generation who worry so much; it’s pretty, but it’s nothing like Bono. At some point, I realized, I can be pitchy, I can forget lyrics. I don’t need to worry so much about it because I’ve hit that emotional depth, which is what attracts fans.”

    Thanks for great links, Lisa B. Lots of interesting stuff in the Michael Orland interview. He said this was the most talented top 6 ever and Bon Jovi wasn’t digging Blake’s version of his song. Agree that the most worthy have hit the Top 4. Sanjaya who? His 15 minutes is more like 15 secs. Elliott’s performance on Idol has been confirmed. I’m guessing the rest of last year’s top 4 willl perform on the finale.

  • platinumgray

    jpfan
    they say elliott will be on Idol on the 16th the wednesday show Dughtry on 22nd singing his boot off song which leaves katherine..no date yet
    i wouldn’t put it pass TPTB to over shine taylor by having him go first with out introduction then bring out the other top 4 idols on the finale..i wouldn’t be surprise

  • jpfan

    So Daughtry performs on final 2 and I’m sure Taylor will be on the finale. It’s odd they haven’t announced the date for Kat’s performance. No way they’ll leave her out.

    YEAH! Taylor and Robert Randolph. That’s what I’m talkin’ bout. And I loved the bunny (Dingo) dance.

    Thanks so much! Of course I still have one paper to finish, two to write, and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff to finish up this week. AND THEN next week I start my summer job…so please pray and cross your fingers that I don’t eff it up, because I’d really, really like to get a full-time offer from these people :-) \

    Thanks everyone!

    Congrats Kat!

    I’m very excited about Elliott’s performance on AI on May 16th. I’m sure it will be a taped performance since that’s the night I’m supposed to be watching him in Richmond – live! I was thinking of the irony – Elliott will be performing his top 40 single (#30!) Wait for You almost one year to the day that he was eliminated from the show… Elliott, you’ve come a LONG way baby!

  • emeralgem

    So Daughtry performs on final 2
    ——————————

    And why is little d performing on final 2 night? No one gets booted that night, and he was not runner up last year nor did he even make it to TOP 3.
    IMO.. he should sing his BOOT song for the person that is going HOME
    after the TOP 3 performances…
    Elliott and *** should perform on the 22nd, and Taylor on FINALE night.

  • Kirsten

    Heh. I see Dave White is complaining about the same things we are (about the backstories):

    “Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been bored all season long with these personality-free lumps. I blame the producers and story editors, of course. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s their job to craft a compelling backstory out of the mundane nothingness that most people bring to the table.”

    Will we get more backstories next year, or will the producers learn the wrong lesson?

    BTW I think it’s interesting that Nigel and Fuller are not producing the Emmy’s this year. Are they really too busy? (IGB is over so I don’t know why they use that as an excuse). How did they not know they were too busy before? Who turns down the Emmy gig? IGB production was a bit rough. Maybe the brilliant Celine/Elvis thing did them in (Emmy “This is the best idea they could come up with?”). Okay, it’s probably exactly as they say.

  • emeralgem

    Okay, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s probably exactly as they say.

    I have my doubts that anything is exactly as they say..

    We must remember, Idol is pushing Chris D as the winner last year. This is the most they could get away with. I am sure they wanted to feature him in the finale, but have pushed *** up there to take away what they can from Taylor.

    It galls me how Elliot, who placed AHEAD of Daughtry last year, is being shunted around like an afterthought.

    In my opinion, I wish Taylor would not be on at all, but he is too much the gentleman to do that. Now I am wondering if they will attempt to mock him, as they did Clay last year.

    Kirsten: Re: Dave White and the Emmy gig. Word. I agree with your assessment of that situation entirely. I am thinking the Emmy gig was pulled right out from under the Idol guys.

    OK, I am ranting and I apologize, but sometimes I get a little irritated.

    Thanks, Lisa B for the links, as always.

    Well, as an Elliott fan, it doesn’t upset me at all. I’m thrilled he’s going to be on. He’s not signed with them and I think it’s kind of a coup for Elliott to be on the show. The exposure will be great for him and in reality it may really be no coinincidence that’s it’s almost a year to the day he was booted. What a great story! AI has given Elliott some decent promo on their website. I can’t complain.

    What the heck? This is why I don’t like Clarkson’s new stuff. If she recorded things like “Up to the Mountain,” I’d be the first to get her CD.

  • radname

    I think Daniel Powder performed top 2 night, he performed the boot song. That is what Daughtry would be on this year. No conspiracy, just logic.

  • jersey

    I actually agree with rad, again. Twice in two days! Daniel Powter was on top 2 night last year to sing “Bad Day”. It only makes sense to have Daughtry do the same.

  • radname

    I think what Kellys saying in regard to that quote is that it’s okay if she doesn’t sing every note in key, her and her fans are connected on a level past perfect vocals, on an emotional level. She then names a lot of famous singers that did the same thing as her. As AI fans we are constantly picking apart performances saying this one was in tune, they forgot the lyrics in this song. But Kelly is saying she’s finally let go of that, she doesn’t care about it anymore, it’s not a talent show anymore for her. (Although I disagree with only a few woman being emotional singers.)

  • radname

    I actually agree with rad, again

    That’s because i’m always right!

  • jersey

    Now, now, rad. Let’s not get carried away.

  • JJ

    Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m always right!

    As you tell us, on a daily basis.

  • Kirsten

    I think Daniel Powder performed top 2 night, he performed the boot song. That is what Daughtry would be on this year. No conspiracy, just logic.

    Then logic would dictate that they follow their own tradition of the last 4 years and only invite last year’s Idol to the Finale (and perhaps a sprinkling of Idols from the Seasons 1-4). Bo, Diana and Clay did not show up to sing in the following year’s Finale.

    For the record, I don’t have a problem with Daughtry or Kat coming on and singing whatever/whenever. I’m frankly quite surprised that they have not been on sooner. I would far rather have the Idols come back in sing a ditty on the show than this pre-canned crap from Robin Thicke we are getting. Perhaps they can claim Daughtry and Taylor were too busy to show up (like they wouldn’t have come if they were asked…who turns down that kind of exposure?), but Kat has been filling her time going to any event that might get her picture in the newspaper. Don’t tell me she couldn’t have been scheduled to appear. And in previous years, past Idols like Carrie have shown up on more than one Idol show (heck, this year Carrie has shown up on more than one Idol show).

    I just hope they do let Taylor on the show and they let him sing something from his album. Dude needs the promo and I enjoy watching him. Those that don’t can go get a drink from the kitchen (like I did when Il Divo sang).

  • jersey

    I agree Kirsten. 100%. I’m still wondering if Taylor’s going to be on at all. He hasn’t mentioned it in awhile and Idol certainly hasn’t mentioned it.

  • radname

    As you tell us, on a daily basis.

    Because ya’ll seem to keep forgetting.
    Kat hasn’t been mentioned on Idol at all and I don’t really care, if she’s not on this year I don’t really care. Kat’s off of Idol, she shouldn’t have to depend on them to get sales. Would I complain if she was on? Definately not, just another time to see Kat. But I wouldn’t feel like TPTB have something against her and are trying to sabotage her.

  • JJ

    Because yaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll seem to keep forgetting.

    Its pretty hard to forget when we are reminded of it so often.

    As far as Taylor not appearing on idol this year, I think it might actually look bad for the show, if he is not on. So, I don’t think they would want to do that. He did say he was going to be on and his schedule is free, so my guess is, he is going to be on.

    It is Taylors right as the winner to be on the finale. And unfortunalty, it is Chris’ right to be on, singing the boot song. Kat did not win, so she cant be expected to appear. I think it is a real coup for Elliott to be on, just like it was for Pickler.

    Actually–and this is my perspective–AI was pimping Kat pretty heavily when her album came out. But when her sales turned out to be a relative disappointment (from the AI standpoint), they dropped her name from the show scripts like a hot potato. I don’t think the show personally hates Taylor or Katharine; I think they don’t want to be bothered mentioning anyone who isn’t making them boatloads of money, or whose coattails they can’t ride on for a while. As for last weeks clips of winners past, well, Kat didn’t win, so I don’t count that as a snub. If Katharine put out an album of standards and became the next Norah Jones (which I’ll believe when I see/hear) and the public ate it up, you can be sure that AI would be pimping her to the high heavens, just like they’d sing Taylor’s praises if his next album is a blockbuster. It’s about the money for them. Nothing personal. RCA might like or dislike Kat or Taylor personally, but AI? Nah.

    OK, I have been set straight on a few issues I see. Like boot song night. Anyway, Idol do what it do. As Kat says above, it is ALL about the money and basking in the glow of (and taking credit for) any Idol’s success.

    As for Elliot, I agree he is getting a nice placement and I am thrilled for him. I guess I just feel he should have had a bit more.

    Every year of Idol and every finale will be different, and I am sure this one will be as well. They will showcase their 12 finalists very differently than in years’ past, and that is as it should be.

    I hope Taylor is used well in the finale with a chance to sing something to showcase the great live performer he is.

    “I watch it for the contestants this year.”

    That’s the way I feel, am watching primarily to see the AI6 contestants. I mean, it would be nice if my faves from last year were on to perform this year, but I am not going to cry in my coffee if they don’t appear.
    I think the mindset is that because Taylor WON last year, so he should be featured on this year’s show a lot more. But that is not how AI has worked in the past, with past winners, so it really is not anything new.

    Nope, you really don’t sound like you care at all about keeping the Kat/Taylor competition going.
    ~~~~~~~
    Kat, you’re 100% right. I don’t see why some find it so hard to recognize that it’s nothing personal with AI. They are just trying to jump on any bandwagon that will help make the show look good. Don’t be surprise if this season’s winner get snobbed for not reaching Carrie’s or maybe Chris’s numbers in sales.. It’s no longer going to be okay just selling a million or two. Just ask Fantasia and Ruben..
    Kat one slight correction, Taylor is with ARISTA not RCA.. Kat is hanging with Kelly C, Clay and Chris.. Wow, I just realize that Kat is hanging with some big dogs. She is going to have to step up her game..
    Also, does anyone really believe that Kat won’t be making an appearance on AI. There is no way in hell Chris, Elliott and Taylor will be there and Kat won’t.. All that screaming you’ll be hearing will be her throwing a a temper tantrum because others are getting attention and she is not..This is KAT we’re talking about..MISS ENTITLEMENT..
    I still trying to get over how her single could come from no where and drop into the number one spot on VH1 The Countdown…
    So, Nigel lied to us again. In an earlier interview, he said there were no plans to have D on this season. See? They found a way to pimp their winner. I knew they would.
  • skylight1219
    And, I’m sure that AI wouldn’t have Taylor on at all if they could help it. They’d just as soon forget that he won last year. What am I saying? They did forget. I hope that someday this all comes back to bite them in their egotistical butts.
  • sexygirl
    I hope Taylor is used well in the finale with a chance to sing something to showcase the great live performer he is.
    I don’t think he will be putting on a concert, just singing a song. One can take from that what they want. I’m sure AI will treat him like past winners. Have him sing with the final two from this season.
    Ladybug – Thanks for looking out for Elliott. His fans are just thrilled he’ll be on at all. We were afraid it wasn’t going to happen. :)
    This year’s ending is really a big question mark. By this time last year, I felt pretty strongly that Taylor was unbeatable. This year – Melinda – Blake – Jordin… any of the three of them could take it. If I had a second chance to bet on it, I’d probably pick Blake. I picked Melinda in the office pool…
  • sexygirl
    Is it me or does there always seem to be a pitty party going on when one’s favorite isn’t treated the way we expect them to be treated. does anyone really believe that Chris D with be a second thought to aI if he was not selling for them. Or yeah, he would because they own him. He would end up like Tamyra tagging along with everything associated with AI..
    By the way, did Season Six end last night? There isn’t much mentioning of it this morning. *Sigh*, something tells me this season will be forgotten faster than Paris Hilton’s stint in jail..LOL
    Seriously thou, I was thinking about that. Does anyone here feel that this season’s winner and runner-up will be remembered long after the show is over. We are three weeks away from the finals and there still isn’t any real buzz about these guys.. Heck there is still more talk about last year’s and past season’s contestants than this season’s. Will anyone really care about them long after the show is over to go out and buy their cds next fall.
  • undecided
    I hope next year is better because its so damm hard to give a carp about anyone this year. I don’t care who wins, I wouldn’t go to the AI6 tour for free. The most exciting thing this season is the guest judges and snarking on the inexplicable guest singers.
    Putting aside which idols from Season 5 will be appearing at the Finale, I am wondering how they are going to feature the biggest star of Season 6—Sanjaya. Comedy skit? Duet with celebrity? Reprise of “You Really Got Me” and reunion with “Crying Girl”?
  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna
    Good morning all. I’ve been super busy the past few weeks, working (really!), but read your comments every day, although I can’t respond to comments from where I’m working anymore. Grrrr.
    I’m listening to the Idol songwriting contest songs, and am very impressed, not only by the songs, but the vocals. SOme of these people are good enough for Idol itself. “In Your Eyes” would be excellent for Blake and I really like “One Night.”
    Wouldn’t it be cool if they released a CD with the top ten singing the top ten songs!
  • sammy
    I think it may come down to who can put out a dynamite performance. I have lost interest in Jordin a little bit, but if she comes in Tuesday with a great performance, she will be back on my radar. Still seeing Blake and Melinda in finals.
    Good for Elliott for getting to perform on AI. Frankly, I was surprised since he is under an Indy contract…really thrilled, just surprised.
    Interesting, I thought of Blake when I heard “In Your Eyes” too…
    Wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it be cool if they released a CD with the top ten singing the top ten songs!
    It would be a lot cooler if they got the 10 best singers from seasons past to sing them. Some of them were actually good.
  • sexygirl
    Previous winners appearing the following season including the finale.
    Kelly was on S2 3 times
    Ruben was on S3 2 times
    Fantasia was on S4 2 times
    Carrie was on S5 2 times
    it looks like a pattern to me.
    Slight correction, Fantasia only appeared once during Season Four. She was supposedly sick during the finals. I personal felt they did not want her back on. One would have thought the world was coming to an end the way some fans carried on when she did make her one time appearance. Trust me. I was and am a Fantasia fan. Fantasia’s return this season was her second time returning to the show.
    Carrie is special, so she gets to sing quite a bit. Heck, she was on this season singing. One would have tought she was from last season the amount of times she has appeared on this season’s show. The norm for past season winners is for them to come out and sing with the finalist of the current. It’s like the passing on of the crown. That’s how season’s two three and, should have been four, was done..
  • JustSomeGuy
    The ssong from Kat’s CD that was played during the top 12 show was ‘Not Ur Girl’ which should have been her next single.
    If we are still in Season 6, is Barry Gibb the mentor this week???
    Too bad, because his voice is shot.
    But it wasn’t always this way.
    Thirty plus years ago, just before the disco era the Bee Gees rocked.
    A few things to mentally masticate:
    Songs for next week show. If we’re getting the BeeGees, who will perform what? I’ve only heard their popular songs, like “Stayin’ Alive” and such, so I’m totally cluless when it comes to potential song choices.
    Also, a lot of people have been tossing around the phrases “juvenile lyrics” and “poorly written” when it comes to Kelly C’s new single. Plus, with the AI songwriting contest up in full-wing, I was led to wonder what one might consider a well-written song from a purely lyrical standpoint. Of course, the music is important, but what songs have grabbed you by the lapels and given you a good shake because of the words and their phrasing? Or, who is your favorite songwriter?
    Personally, although this is probably as unoriginal at you can get right now, I really enjoy the songwriting of John Mayer*, especially on his latest album. (Hate, hate, hate “Body is a Wonderland.”) Lyrically, I don’t find his songs dull and redundant, which lets me enjoy the song as a whole.
    (Although I’ve posed the question, I still have yet to come up with many answers of my own. I’m thinking though…)
    *BTW, John Mayer and a whole bunch of other musicians are preforming at the New Orleans Jazz Fest this weekend, and many of the performances are streaming live at the AT&T Blue Room. Check it out…
    I’m going to go eat breakfast now…
  • Paula
    Kellie has already been on this season — remember Ryan’s question to her!
  • jbrad
    I am pretty blah about this years crop myself. If I have to chose a favorite, it would be Jordin. My daughter is crazy about Blake. Please, let anyone other than Melinda win!! I agree she has a great voice, but I think of all of them, she would sell the less cds. Plus, I cant hardly look at the girl.Lakisha is a great singer also, but I dont think she has much self-confidence. With her, its almost the Pickler-syndrome. Last year, Kellie was doing great until she had a back week or two, and then her confidence just seemed to drain out of her, and that was the end of it. I am glad that Laskisha had a good week, so maybe she will come back like gangbusters next week.
  • Kirsten
    Wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it be cool if they released a CD with the top ten singing the top ten songs!
    Are we getting any compilation CD at all this year? I haven’t heard a peep about it. Shouldn’t Ryan be waving it in our faces by now?
    I think “Crying Girl” will get an invite to be back on (she’s already been back for another taping according to the AI guy). Maybe they’ll have an entire section of “Crying Girls” sent over from central casting. I wouldn’t be suprised to see Sherman Pore (older man who auditioned) back as well.
    Last year, they made hay with Kellie’s food schtick after the calamari and salmon incident. Since Sanjaya’s thing is hair, maybe they’ll have Vidal Sasoon do his hair or something. Didn’t some hair company use to sponsor the show? (I’m thinking L’Oreal…I seem to recall them having bits where they did Idol’s hair in Season 2) They could do that again.
    Justin Timberlake did beatboxing on “How Deep Is Your Love” during the Grammy awards a few years ago when NSYNC did an acappella version of the song during the set they did for the BeeGees tribute. The whole tribute was awesome.
Hmmm, will they have Phil and Chris sing together with another famous duo—Hall and Oates, Big and Rich or Captain and Tennille?
    I’m not sure why selling the most CDs or being commercial should matter as a criteria for an AI winner in the eyes of the voters. Personally, I’m not looking to make them evil powers any more cash. Their wealth is not my concern. Let Melinda win. Let Jordin win. Let Bloke win. Let LaKisha win. For me, I don’t care if they even sell as poorly as Kat has sold.
    I’d like to hear someone sing To Love Somebody. For me its the best song the Brothers Gibb wrote. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact Ray L covers the song in concert. :smirk1_ee: I would like Melinda to sing the song for me. Err I mean for the competition.
    Awwww Dave, thanks for pointing to Clay’s To Love Somebody. IMO Phil’s is the second best voice from AI, and Clay’s is the first and I love that performance.
    In my opinion, I wish Taylor would not be on at all, but he is too much the gentleman to do that. Now I am wondering if they will attempt to mock him, as they did Clay last year.
    I have to admit, there is a small piece of me that would wish that Taylor (and Clay) would tell TPTB to eat glass, but I also know that would be unprofessional.
    Instead Taylor should (and probably will) do what Clay did last year and make the most of the opportunity and take it in stride. I laughed out loud last year when a large portion of the press from the finale last year was about Clay and his hair and his voice. Stupid TPTB.
    Now going to read the news articles. Thanks in advance LisaB.
  • LB2
    Dave, you read my mind. I want somebody to do To Love Somebody, as well, but I’m not sure who (definitely not Jordin; I like the idea of Melinda doing it). Clay was good but not the best at it, so it’s not an untouchable song.
    Lu – I think Melinda was a good bet for who will win. I adore Blake (as you know, LOL), but I’m not sure he’ll even make the finale. I’m not worried or upset about it (at this point, I’ll be glad for how far he manages to get – I just didn’t want him to leave before Chris). I’m still voting, but according to the judges and the producers, it seems like a foregone conclusion who the final two will be (Jordin and Melinda); I think Melinda will win in any matchup against somebody (which makes me happy because I like her too).
  • t2
    Ken and Nigel have … ummmm … backed out from doing the Emmy’s. Ummm….riiight!!! Anyone else think the Emmy people got a good look at Idol Gives Back and thought “H to the No!”
  • MaryS-NJ
    MaryS – if you’re lurking, you’ve got mail. Check Tay-online, August 19th.
    I see ya jersey. Thanks, and I replied… Yes of course!
    Hi everybody! It’s been a long couple weeks of (attempted) AI detox -LOL! So far I’m still addicted to an infuriating degree although maybe gaining a bit of perspective from the distance.
    My take on season 6 at this point… I’m pitching my tent at Camp Blasà © with the rest of Team Indifference.
    I don’t dislike anyone of the remaining four contestants but I kind of resent the pimpage of Jordin this season just as resented it last season. She’s been wildly inconsistent, IMO. Lakisha has a great church voice, had a really good performance this week, but has also made some horrible song choices. Blake has entertained me almost every week, but isn’t compelling me to pick up my phone to vote for him. Melinda is still my favorite, but ditto.
    Besides, winning seems to be a mixed bag on this show – if you don’t live up to expectations you’re treated like an after-thought to anyone who out$ell$ you. Why would I wish that on anyone who wanted to be free to make music without the ugly comparisons and ridicule that comes from the critic class? There’s too much damn negativity and the stink of schadenfreude out there over something so relatively unimportant (a silly reality TV show) compared to the rest of what’s going on in the world and it’s making me feel very cynical and somewhat embittered – about the politics of a silly reality TV show. Sigh. But I digress…
    I guess I would prefer a Melinda/Blake finale because I think the two of them have been most consistent in their respective talents (vocals/song arranging), IMO. I did vote for Chris Sligh a bit to try to save him, and for Phil last week because I was impressed by his last few performances and he has showed improvement and growth (unlike Jordin)- to no avail, sadly. That’s it for me voting-wise. Let the chips fall where they may.
    As for guest appearances in the final weeks by previous seasons’ Idols, I would assume the singer of this season’s boot song will sing his song on Top 2 like last year. I know we can expect more performances from former Idols in the top 4. That will be nice.
    I would hope that last season’s winner…ol’ What’s-His-Name… will perform a song with the finalists and sing a song from his album, as happened last season. It would, however, not surprise me if the PTB “regrettfully” announce that there isn’t time for last season’s winner to sing his single with all the Special!Guest-Performers-With-Albums-To-Pimp. Afterall, money greases the wheels of American Idol, right?
    Well that was cheerful, huh? :rolleyes_tb:
    It is a lovely day and I will try to spend sometime outside in the sunshine and maybe I’ll feel a little less cynical after spending so more time unconnected to an electronic device of some kind. TTFN.
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still voting, but according to the judges and the producers, it seems like a foregone conclusion who the final two will be (Jordin and Melinda)
    A few weeks ago, I would have called a Blake-Melinda finale, but with the recent pimping of Jordin, I think you may be right. But if it’s not Jordin, I think it will be Blake in the finale with Melinda. Now, if Melinda doesn’t get there, I’ll be shocked. Melding being booted would be the biggest shocker of the season for me personally…
  • star
    Seriously thou, I was thinking about that. Does anyone here feel that this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s winner and runner-up will be remembered long after the show is over. We are three weeks away from the finals and there still isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t any real buzz about these guys.. Heck there is still more talk about last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and past seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s contestants than this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Will anyone really care about them long after the show is over to go out and buy their cds next fall.
    Of course. Their fans will (of which each of the remaining finalists have, believe it or not)…just like you did with Taylor.
  • Ladybug
    OK, ok, mj. :tongue1_tb: Season 6.
    I will be very interested to hear how any Bee Gee’s music is interpreted by the final 4 because the vocal stylings of those songs are so unique to Barry and Robin Gibb.
    There are some fantastic songs in the Bee Gee catalog. I love to hear some of their older stuff, but, again, all are sort of identified with those tremolo voices.
  • sammy
    A Melinda/Blake finale would at least be interesting. If it’s two of the females against each other, I’m feeling a big yawn coming on.
  • Former_AI_Junkie
    I’m sad to see Philler gone. Again, the best male vocalist leaves us (as did Sligh when he left at 10th place). His performance style was akin to that of a bland lounge act, but he could sing.
    I wish Sanjaya was still around.. just imagine his performance of “Stayin’ Alive”
    I’m predicting Jordin’s demise next week. I don’t see how she can pull off two of these songs, she’s doesn’t have enough vocal control like Melinda and Lakisha and isn’t innovative like Blake who knows how to work around his vocal limitations.
  • SpenserJ
    I will be very interested to hear how any Bee Geeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music is interpreted by the final 4 because the vocal stylings of those songs are so unique to Barry and Robin Gibb.
    I wonder if they’re just restricted to songs recorded by the Bee Gee’s? Because, Barry Gibb has written hundreds of songs – many successfully recorded by other artists. So, we could get a much nicer variety if those options were included as well.
    Not that I won’t enjoy a pure Bee Gee’s night, because I do love me some Gibb brothers.
    Oh, and I have two, count ‘em TWO birthday parties to attend today, so I just wanted to tell you all to have a great day and I’ll probably “see” you tomorrow.
  • griz
    I think regardless of the song Taylor sings at the finale, it will spike his sales (temporarily)… this is the AI audience, the one that gave him the title, and it will bring him to the forefront of those that lost track of him (those that don’t go to concerts or watch daytime TV).
  • LB2
    Will anyone really care about them long after the show is over to go out and buy their cds next fall.
    Yes. I was thinking about forming a huge argument, but it’s pointless. I will just say…
    There are tons of fans of this season, there are a ton of people who will go to the concert in the summer, and there are tons of people who will buy the cds and be happy that their faves are successful. The show and tour may not be as intense (the best word to describe it) or as popular as last year but I’m starting to think that’s not the most terrible thing in the world.
    I will look back this season very fondly.
  • Former_AI_Junkie
    this is the AI audience, the one that gave him the title, and it will bring him to the forefront of those that lost track of him
    If even half of the viewers voted at last season’s finale, taking a low estimate of 10 votes per person you’d get way more than 63 million votes which is what AI got.
    Most of the viewers of AI do not vote and so aren’t guaranteed buyers of Taylor’s CD. It’s safe to assume that about 1/2 million people made him the winner.
    Clive Davies said once in an interview that the 1/2 copies of the AI winner are guaranteed to sell. Beyond that is dependent on commercial appeal.
  • pj
    Thanks, LisaB, for posting the articles as always.
    I was glad to see Michael Orland (musical director) weigh in on Blake’s use of the program Ableton Live.
    I was surprised when he admitted that he used a computer to arrange it. Is that all kosher to you?
    Yes, because while it’s a computer program, he comes up with the drum beats and manually puts them in. It’s his own creativity doing it. I love that he said that. Even during Diana Ross week, I remember he was playing beats in the background with her to hear what it would sound like.
  • t2
    You couldn’t force me to go the concert this year. I just don’t care enough for the singing of most of the contestants (not a Diva-lover). However, I’ll be first in line to buy Phil’s CD…especially if its country-rock.
    I’m also guessing that they will make Phil “6th” so there wouldn’t be enough of Phil in the tour to make it worth my money.
  • dave
    I have enjoyed this season. Its not the same as last season for me but so what. Just because I don’t have a cast member to be all fanmanny over doesn’t make this season bad. Besides whenever I start to like someone they vanish. Sorry Sundance. Sorry Phil. Sorry Steph. Thank you Antonella for the pics.
    I agree with LB2 that there are plenty of fans that will buy season six CDs and concert tickets. I’m not a numbers guy, I go by feel, but really how successful are season 5 CDs? I know Daughtry has sold millions but after that it drops like a rock. Is season 5 really the benchmark for comparison? Maybe just for amount of finalists with CDs dropped.
    I’m actually looking forward to Princess P’s CD this week. Will she do the overabundance of bonus tracks gimmick like Elliott? I sure hope not.
  • pj
    I will look back this season very fondly.
    Me too! My fave went out at seven last year and while I continued to watch and vote (Elliott and then Taylor… yes, I voted for Taylor), it lost steam for me when Ace left.
    It’s fun for me that Blake has lasted as long as he has. I’m definately looking forward to the tour and any music that Blake makes. I’ll also follow Sligh, Brandon and maybe Phil.
    ETA: If Melinda or Jordin make an album that’s interesting, I might snatch it up, too. Generally, I’m not a fan of belters or power ballads.
  • pj
    Dave, don’t start liking Blake, please.
  • jpfan
    I agree with the Advocate writer. No back stories have really hurt this season. The final 4 are talented but they feel like strangers. Blake seems to have the most devoted fans but whether that translates into a career I have no idea. I think this year only the winner/runner up will get the Clive nod. AI bringing Elliott back is a shocker. He hasn’t sold a ton of albums so they must expect good things from his single. They’re the parents who love you only if you succeed.
    Another take — this time from a hip-hop perspective — on the downward spiral of the music industry, from Urban Connects:
    http://www.urbanconnects.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=390
    But if you come to UC on the regular you know those SoundScan numbers only mean one thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦the end of the old system is upon us. Those Union soldiers I refer to is online technology and that mansion on fire is the recording music industry. BET, MTV, Clear Channel and all the rest of the Old Gatekeepers Regime is DEAD! Not in the sense that nobody watches it anymore but as far as compelling people to go spend their money based on what is being shoved down their throat. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a wrap. The major labels know this but are stuck because the alternate solution means surrendering control, which is happening anyway as time marches on.
    I’m surprised that Elliott is even performing on AI. That’s great news. I thought they only let the people they signed back on the show.
    I agree that Idol should let the past contestants with albums out sing on the wednesday show instead of this filmed crap we are getting. It would boost their sales, which in turn would make AI look better, a win for everyone. It would be nice if they would let Bucky sing his new single. Its doing very well on the charts, number 4 on video countdown on GAC and number 6 on CMT videos, and he debuted the hightest new male artist in country on Billboard since the mid nineties so he set a record. Those credentials should get him on you would think.
    No, Kimblerley Locke, who came in 3rd on AI2 and who was signed by Curb Records, performed her first single, “Eighth World Wonder” on AI3 on March 24, 2004.
    “Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not a numbers guy, I go by feel, but really how successful are season 5 CDs? I know Daughtry has sold millions but after that it drops like a rock.”
    Daughtry could have the biggest album of 2007. What’s unusual about Season 5 is the number of idols signed with albums out. Remember the music biz is in freefall so even selling 100k is a big deal for a debut artist. I think Janet Jackson’s last album sold 400K or something like that. So Kellie, Bucky and Elliott have actually put out successful debuts. By idol standards, Taylor and Kat have been disappointments. However, I think the days of the guaranteed platinum CD for the idol winner are finished. They’ll be lucky to match Taylor’s numbers with this year’s winner.
  • Ladybug
    My problem with this year’s crop vs last year’s is, while they are seemingly a really nice, pleasant group of performers (and talented, too), they are just a little on the dull side overall. Not a thing wrong with that. Simply not very interesting. Possibly the lack of back stories is part of the problem. I can’t really put my finger on it.
    I come out with a sort of “what’s not to like?” about the contest this year, but also “what’s TO like?” as well.
    Is Elliott breaking new ground?
    Sony/BMG has Elliott’s distribution deal so technically Elliott is within the Sony/BMG umbrella.
    Kim Locke returned for a performance and she is signed with Curb Records who has no association with Sony/BMG at all.
  • griz
    If 1% of that 1/2 million goes to buy that album, that’s 5,000 CDs. My point is that an appearance on the AI finale could do him a lot of good, sales wise. The anticipation is huge this year – we haven’t seen Taylor except for 15 secs last week – I think the AI audience would accept him with huge open arms at the finale – especially with this dull year of contestants.
  • jpfan
    Elliott has rescheduled his Richmond concert from 5/16 to 5/18 which indicates he’ll be performing “live” on AI. What the heck is going on? Seems like the decision to bring him back was done at the last minute.
    Daughtry could have the biggest album of 2007. Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s unusual about Season 5 is the number of idols signed with albums out. Remember the music biz is in freefall so even selling 100k is a big deal for a debut artist. I think Janet Jacksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s last album sold 400K or something like that. So Kellie, Bucky and Elliott have actually put out successful debuts. By idol standards, Taylor and Kat have been disappointments. However, I think the days of the guaranteed platinum CD for the idol winner are finished. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be lucky to match Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s numbers with this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s winner.
    The success of any album — debut, indie, or major label — is inevitably and irrevocably tied to the production and promotional costs of making it, as well as the expense of touring in support of the album.
    Small indie albums can often turn a profit with modest sales and strategic regional touring, while the super-hyped major releases can bleed red ink despite multi-million sales and massively-promoted national and/or international tours.
    Perception is rarely reality in the music industry; it is very much smoke and mirrors…
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not a numbers guy, I go by feel, but really how successful are season 5 CDs? I know Daughtry has sold millions but after that it drops like a rock. Is season 5 really the benchmark for comparison? Maybe just for amount of finalists with CDs dropped.
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to make the assumption that you do not fit into the skinny jeans right now. However, cheese and sangria are a nice way to not fit into them. Going anywhere good?
    The skinny jeans are but a fantasy right now, unfortunately. It’s been like three constant weeks of parties, dinners, and wine tastings. And not a whole lot of working out. Which I might as well enjoy now. My dad’s a diabetic, so when I go home and stay with my folks, it’s nothing but healthy eating. And treadmilling. :-) Which I’m actually looking forward to, believe it or not. After three weeks of nonstop sweets and fats, I’m looking forward to a bit of a healthy change.
    Home is South Florida…I’ll be working down there this summer. So it’s like a vacation, but not. Hopefully a trip to NYC is in the works for later this summer.
    Hey Sexygirl, if you are still around, you had asked a question the other day. YOu asked why my husband would have a list of songs for Taylor to cover if he dosen’t think he has any musical talent. There are 2 main reasons:
    1. Being the alpha-male that he is, he dosen’t admit when he is wrong;
    2. He said that his original tunes are very good, however, he feels that one way to tell if someone has musical talent is to covers, so you can compare. Taylor did covers, but they were obscure covers. He would like to hear more mainstream covers. One song he suggested is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
    The main point I was trying to make is that my husband actually does think he is talented, but it will take a long time for him to admit it outright. But, I know how he thinks.
    Ace has a CD coming out in June and I can’t wait! All of those other seasons may have had a number of idols release but season 5 contestants will have 8 cds hit the stores with rpetty good sales before season 6 is even over… this I think is a first. Maybe I’m wrong.
    I think part of my problem with season 6 is what some others have posted… I don’t feel like I know them. There’s definitely loads of talent but I just don’t have the same connection. Jordin has begun to rub me the wrong way so I’m hoping for a Blake/Melinda finale. Whoever wins that contest – I’m happy.
    Excellent point, Nevada. There is a tendency to just look at the sales and not at the actual profit made. Taylor keeping his costs low (eg, not sinking money into a video) and getting out of recoupment faster is more meaningful than selling millions and ending up with little to show for it.
    I wonder how much someone like Justin Timberlake actually pockets from his multi-platinum CD, considering he used a superstar producer and has spent money on videos?
    I’m on line for about 1/2 hour, will you stop ruining by making sense!!!!
    Another thing people tend to overlook is that a successful tour is many times more profitable than a successful CD. There are many artists who never had big hits that are very wealthy and successful because they are great entertainers.
    There are also many times that a CD, or song, is hugely popular, and we never hear from the artist again. Can anyone name who sang Black Velvet??? Great song, hugely popular, never heard from artist again. FYI, I can name her.
    To those here who hate Kat’s Open Toes and can’t appreciate it for the girl-power anthem that it is, well… Kat’s in today’s Montreal interview about how it could’ve been much worse! Here is the transcript, and it’s really pretty funny:
    “Let me tell you something, everyone who’s listening right now: you may think this song is cheesy because look, so did I, I remember when I was recording the song… When I was recording this song I was like “Your kidding me right?”. It was the first song I ever recorded that was more in the vein of more pop hip-hop so I just kind of kept my mouth closed.
    “When the line finally came – because he fed each line to me as I was recording the song – he was like “ok, and now ‘My Open Toes’”. I was in the booth behind the glass and I was like “Excuse me? What did you just say?”
    “We did this song so fast when we first demoed it (we re-recorded it later). We were doing it piece by piece so I couldn’t get the full story of what this song was about. Originally the lyrics were way more ghetto, they were something I didn’t understand like “my country boy like them mules, my city boy like the t-straps.” I was like “What?” “And whenever I wear them they cause a lot of trouble they both keep wantin’ a nightcap”. I was like “What does that mean??”
    “Anyway, I’m being random and ADD right now. The moral of the story is, I put my own flair on it, we went back in and wrote. I have some writing credit on it cause I said “enough with the country boy and the mules, let’s bring in some more of the fun girly aspect of it”, cause it’s me I love fun girl songs and there’s this really great breakdown that’s just perfect for dancing in clubs. I love to dance so… I just think it’s a cute song”
  • JJ
    Why would you record a song that you haven’t heard before? Why would you record a song that the producer felt he needed to spoon feed so you wouldn’t balk?
    FYI, mules can actually be very sexy, girlie shoes.
  • Kirsten
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“When the line finally came – because he fed each line to me as I was recording the song – he was like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ok, and now à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹My Open Toesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .
    What? Wouldn’t you run through a song a few times before you tried recording it? I do NOT understand the recording industry.
    But then again, perhaps that does explain some songs that do get recorded. Maybe the artists are fed each word and then the producers mix it all together. That would explain “My Humps”.
    No insult to past idols, but how many of them debuted their CDs in the top 5 on Billboard charts. Five of the six idols from Season 5 did and Kellie P. was #7 (I think). There are albums and there are albums.
    Billboard or SoundScan rankings need to be taken in context. Bucky debuted at #4 with sales of 60,814; Kim Locke debuted at #16 with sales of 56,894. In other words, Bucky’s numbers — had he gotten them back in May 2004 — would have probably earned him a spot at #15. Conversely, Kim’s numbers would have earned her a spot at #5.
    Likewise, Fantasia’s #8 debut for “Free Yourself” is often seen as a mediocre chart performance for an Idol winner, but her sales of 239,389 would have been more than enough to debut at #1 throughout most of 2004. For that matter, it would have been enough for a #1 debut for all but four weeks so far in 2007…
    And for the record, Kellie debuted at #9 with sales of 79,133.
    Ultimately, the numbers that count are for sales, not Billboard rank.
  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat
    We were doing it piece by piece so I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get the full story of what this song was about.
    “Open Toes” has a story?
    I put my own flair on it, we went back in and wrote. I have some writing credit on it cause I said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“enough with the country boy and the mules, letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s bring in some more of the fun girly aspect of it.”
    So Katharine’s “flair” is to change songs from ghetto to completely vapid? That’s nice to know :-)
    I’m surprised she got through that entire interview without yapping about how the song is “empowering.” Or maybe someone at RCA finally told her to knock that shit off.
    Sorry pfeeder, I know you brought this over with the best of intentions, but Katharine’s just fun — and easy — to snark on. :-)
    In other news, these Idol songs are horrible. Just terrible. What’s with the titles that are all vague allusions to time frames? “Tonight,” “Forever Starts Today,” etc. I hate stuff like that. I hate the title of that Daughtry song “Feels Like Tonight.” That’s a paradox of syntax. “Feels” is a present-tense verb, while “tonight” indicates either the future (“tonight I’ll go to the movies”) or also the present (“it’s really chilly tonight.”) So: if “tonight” is right now, nothing can feel like tonight, because there’s no frame of reference. The only thing that can feel like tonight is TONIGHT, and that makes no damn sense. And if “tonight” refers to the future, well, obviously, nothing can feel like THE FUTURE.
    Yes. I am insane. But stuff like that bothers me. :-)
  • Kirsten
    Ultimately, the numbers that count are for sales, not Billboard rank.
    But, there is some relevance to Billboard rankings. The sales numbers are quite depressed from those years of lore. Perhaps Bucky would have sold more that year. Perhaps not.
    Of course, Billboard rankings won’t put food on Clive’s table, so moving units is where it is at with him.
    It’s just that it is tough to compare sales numbers because of overall declining markets while rankings often have more to do with who you are debuting against. With those same numbers, Bucky could probably have had the number 1 (or close to the number 1) album in January.
    I think that we can state, though, that Bucky has been the most successful Idol to have placed eighth.
  • bean99
    I don’t think it’s necessary for them to have lots of former idol finalists on the show. They usually give them a chance to sing on Idol Extra if they have a new album coming out. I know Bucky, Paris, Mandisa, Kellie, and Ace have been on along with Kimberly Locke. I still like Chris D and some of the others but am now into this season. I will be happy to see him do Home on the show but wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t happen. I’ll be seeing him here at a local event so that’s easy for me to say, lol.
  • Metta
    But, there is some relevance to Billboard rankings. The sales numbers are quite depressed from those years of lore. Perhaps Bucky would have sold more that year. Perhaps not.
    What are Billboard rankings based on?
  • Tony
    Sony/BMG has Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s distribution deal so technically Elliott is within the Sony/BMG umbrella.
    Kim Locke returned for a performance and she is signed with Curb Records who has no association with Sony/BMG at all.
    Elliott technically under Sony/BMG? lol. I wouldn’t go THAT far.
    And I forgot about Kimberley Locke’s performance. I don’t even remember it.
  • JJ
    What are Billboard rankings based on?
    A combination of sales and radio airplay. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe radio airplay is the higher factor.
  • Kirsten
    What are Billboard rankings based on?
    Sales. Nominally, they are based on SoundScan sales numbers from the Monday 12 am to Sundy 11:59 pm. Albums that have been out for more than 2 years do not count on the main BB200 chart.
    BTW Who would pay 99 cents for a Ford Ad on I-tunes? WHO? I’d rather send them 99 cents for their charity. You can listen to 30 seconds of the 47 second song for free.
    ETA: “A combination of sales and radio airplay. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not 100% sure, but I believe radio airplay is the higher factor.”
    That’s for some of the singles charts. The Hot 100 is a combo of airplay and sales (roughly, every 1 million listeners counts for 1 point, every 1 K of sales counts for 2. IIRC).
  • radname
    Allanah Miles, while having a big hit with Black Velvet and a lot of other songs off of her first cd got NO money from it. She made no money from such a huge hit and was left backrupt from her contract. She just recently got back in the music business.
    If that’s the standard, then Ace is destined to be the most successful Idol to have placed seventh if he sells even one CD (probably to pj), given that no other seventh place finisher has released a solo album…although presumably Jennifer Hudson will at some point.
    And Chris Sligh is well positioned to be the most successful Idol to have placed tenth, for the same reason.
    Its amazing the success idol contestants have had. True, they don’t all end up huge stars, but most are making a good living in the field they wanted to be in and the jobs are so varied. One top 32 contestant from the early years of idol is the center ring solo singer for Barnum and Bailey cirus. Only person in the world to have that job. Vonzell, Nadia, Kevin have movie parts. Lisa Tucker is getting a pilot for a fox tv show and has been on Zooey on nickelodeon. Nadia, Vonzell and Kellie P. have also done some modelling. Constantine starts as a regular on a soap opera the 15th. Kim C, Matt, Mikaylah, Justin are on tv. Fantasia, Diana, Anthony, Constantine, Frenchie, Tamyra, LaToya, Amy are in or were in theater. Most put out albums, that if not real successful, enabled them to get better gigs performing for a living. Some signed with labels to make gospel music and so far, all that went with country are doing very good. The girl from last year that was sooooooooo annoying and was a real camera hog got lead singer for a punk rock band. I read that Antonella got offers from 2 different sources to do some “hot” pics and hosting for Girls Gone Wild. ONe offer was a quarter a million and that company said they wouldnt lose her in a bidding war. More then one way to use idol to make life a little easier I guess.
    Ha! Clive it a bot and will never die!! ;)
    And I’m watching bits of the NO Jazz Fest at the AT&T Blue Room and Rod Stewart just performed “If You Think I’m Sexy” and he was flanked by three female background singers, one of them rubbing herself up on him. Is that supposed to be as funny as it looked? ‘Cause I was cracking up…
    Here’s a great article from the San Francisco Gate –
    Hicks takes it slow
    Joel Selvin
    Sunday, May 6, 2007
    “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks spent 10 years kicking around the South, singing with bar bands. Before entering the world of televised amateur contests, his big moments came as opening act for Jackson Browne, Keb’ Mo’, Steve Earle and James Brown — he can tick off the names like car crashes he remembers.
    “Those were the highlights of my musical career up to that point,” he says by phone from Columbus, Ohio, taking a minute to remember exactly where he is on the road.
    On his own before “Idol,” Hicks could draw 100 folks on a good night.
    “In the South, you follow football,” he says of finding the best crowds in those days. “You want to get into the college towns where (the population) numbers go from 10,000 to 80,000.”
    Hicks no longer needs to worry about football crowds being in town. After winning last season’s “American Idol,” he has released his self-titled major-label debut, which has sold more than a million copies. His autobiography will be published this summer by Random House. And he is touring sold-out theaters and halls on his first national tour (which stops Wednesday at the Warfield)…..
    ….He is certainly not one of the screechy, bombastic over-the-top types that “Idol” so often promotes. Refreshingly, he’s a seasoned vocalist who probably sounds great singing after-hours blues on a club stage. His show draws from all three albums and doesn’t rely on any of his material from the TV show, where his fans called themselves the Soul Patrol. Hicks knows he’s in this deal for the long haul.
    “Slow and steady wins the race,” he says like a mantra. “My grassroots and organic mentality, my Soul Patrol — that’s what keeps you alive in this business, your people. You have to nurture those fans. They have to see you. You have to be tangible to them. I’m into that. That’s the career path I chose.”
    There are so many things wrong about that SF article, i guess they didn’t go to the shows either.
    Except for the ‘sold over a million copies’ – from your experience at all of his concerts, what else is wrong with the article?
  • griz
    radname – except for the sold over a million, I thought the article was quite insightful and intelligently written – and the writer does seem to ‘get him’ as an artist. What do you have objection with with based on your experience going to a Hicks concert? Or have you ever gone to a Taylor show?
    The SF Gate is a pretty progressive music publication in the Bay area – it’s quite a compliment to Taylor, which the paper sees as a serious artist. You know how progressive they are in that area of the country, don’t you?
    griz – are we on the same page or what? :)
    And to you too. We just had the neighbors over for soft tacos, homemade guacamole and salsa and mango margaritas (virgin for the kiddies). I love living in a country with a wide variety of ethnic holidays to celebrate! Any excuse for a celebration, I say.
    You’ve never been to a show yet you know more than anyone who has. You’re quite young to be so damned self-righteous. Might want to get yourself in check before you enter the real world and get knocked Seven Ways to Sunday.
    Yes, I’m aggitated.
    Sorry mj.
  • sexygirl
    Radname, have you heard anything about when Kat is going on tour or doing anything associated with that cd of hers?
    I did not see anything wrong with the article. I though someone said Taylor’s cd was shipped over one million. Are we really going down that road again. They did mention that his cd is slow getting out of the box and did the usual Chris comparison. I guess some just have a hardtime when Taylor gets any kind of positive acknowledge.
    I’m gunna take a leap of faith here and read that as a swipe at Katharine Mcphee – I mean, she IS a screechy, bombastic over-the-top type that Idol wanted to promote – unfortunately for them, and her, she failed to satisfy their dollar urges.
  • xoxoyc
    So Kellie, Bucky and Elliott have actually put out successful debuts. By idol standards, Taylor and Kat have been disappointments.
    Since Kat and Taylor have both sold more than Elliott- I fail to see the logic in that statement. The number two spot has never guarenteed record sales- as evidenced by all over the place numbers from all the previous #2′s.
  • xoxoyc
    Actuallyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’and this is my perspectiveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’AI was pimping Kat pretty heavily when her album came out. But when her sales turned out to be a relative disappointment (from the AI standpoint), they dropped her name from the show scripts like a hot potato.
    They’ve pimped Fantasia several times this season and her sales are less than stellar. They’ve also pimped Pickler who has only sold gold, and now they are going to pimp Elliott’s whose album is dropping much faster than Kat’s did.
    That argument doesn’t add up.
  • sammy
    I thought Kat and Taylor had sold more than Kellie and Bucky, too. Oops.
  • jpfan
    CD sales are like movies. If a big budget film costs $100Mil to make and grosses $99 mil, it’s a flop. If an indy film cost $5 mil to make and grosses $6 mil, it’s a success. Kellie, Bucky and Elliott may generate a better return on their albums than Kat’s expensive CD. Taylor as idol winner has sold much less than other winners. Therefore Kat and Taylor may be seen as disappointments even though they sold more CDs than the others. (Kellie has outsold Kat and could equal Taylor if she continues to sell.) I have no idea how much Kat’s CD cost to produce. But I know alot of big name producers worked on it.
  • xoxoyc
    Whether or not they are making any money for the record company should not have an impact on Idol’s decision. They are now pimping artists with guest spots that have no ties to Idol or RCA/Arista/J. 19 only makes money off of Kellie and Chris D. so if it was really only about those who had sold albums to make money for 19- well Taylor, Elliott, and Fantasia would not be appearing- because they are not in 19′s stable.
    I think it now goes beyond who is selling- as I said. Fantasia is selling pretty poorly and she is no longer signed to 19. So…….
    Yes it does. Maybe it’s not all about the money, but it’s about pimping American Idol as a brand. Fantasia might not be selling records, but she’s on Broadway right now, and AI wasn’t about to pass up a chance to stick their name to her. Jennifer Hudson’s winning an Oscar didn’t make them any money, but all of a sudden she was their golden child. Elliott may be coming back to perform, but he’s never, EVER been mentioned by this show since AI5 ended (and IMO, there’s a difference between “so-and-so is going to come back and sing a song because we need the filler” and “omg Jennifer Hudson/Fantasia/DAUGHTRY! is sooo awesome AND WE DISCOVERED THEM!”).
    ALTHOUGH it was never meant to be the stuff of conventional entertainment, too much rock à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢nà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ roll has become just that. Rock stars are featured in reality shows and tabloids; previously sacrosanct Led Zeppelin and Nirvana songs are plugged into commercials and soundtracks; à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  has devoted an entire evening to cluelessly sung renditions of British Invasion hits.     Thanks for posting that article, Griz. SF was my home for many years before moving to Canada. You are right, it’s an extremely progressive city and has been known as a haven for artists. It’s fantastic that the major paper (sfgate is ostensibly the online version of the SF Chronicle) gave Taylor such a positive and accurate write-up. I say “accurate” because, as Sexygirl alluded, the cd has sold a million to retailers. The certification process and the rules governing it preceded Taylor’s appearance on the scene. No special favors are being afforded him.
    I just watched “DreamGirls” on DVD. No wonder Jennifer Hudson won an Academy Award. She was awesome. Somehow, I can hear LaKisha doing music like this. She has the chops. I don’t think she would sell well with a CD, but, believe she would be dynamite on Broadway, or in a movie musical.
