    Blogging American Idol

Her vocal was pitchy, her song choice iffy. Her outfit was a messà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ she spent the first part of the number schlepping around an enormous scarlet stole the size of an infield tarpaulin. She executed some bizarre drunken-traffic-cop hand gestures, teetered on her high heels, shouted at the audience. And when she was finished, Randy, Paula, and Simon stood and applauded. Such are the benefits of being Diana Ross…

Learn in church, belt ‘em out on ‘Idol’

Now they sing in front of millions on “American Idol,” but until recently many of this year’s contestants could be found performing in church.

Chris Sligh is the worship leader at Seacoast Church in Greenville, S.C., where he and his wife, Sarah, are active in the congregation. Sligh leads the music during services and fronts the church band. The son of missionaries, Sligh attended Bob Jones University in Greenville and regularly seeks out his pastor for musical advice.

    Billboard review of Elliott

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/content_display/reviews/singles/e3ibd39c4aa721578f25bd517af3c4086c4

… Old-soul midtempo, hand-clapping production from Stargate (Nelly Furtado, Ne-Yo, Rihanna) and rapid-fire, R. Kelly-esque verses adeptly mesh with a muscular, emotive vocal. Considering that Yamin cites Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway as
influences, the template is hands-down convincing. The singer suffered from a lack of overt star quality on the show, but “Wait for You” boasts amplitude of a radio-ready headliner… à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Chuck Taylor

The masterclass lady blog was an interesting read. I don’t know anything about the technical aspects of singing, but she sure sounds like she put a lot of thought into her critiques and compliments. I know the guest celebrity coaches don’t put that much effort into coaching the kids but I wonder if the vocal coach that AI provides for the kids for the season puts as much thought into what he/she tells them.

More insults to Taylor Hicks in the above article posted by LisaB ( SUNDAY GAZETTE MAIL )

    EXCERPT :

Season four brought us country sweetheart Carrie Underwood, who has become a country superstar after winning numerous awards à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ including three Grammys and four CMA Awards. Her hits include à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Before He Cheatsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jesus Take the Wheel.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Runner-up Bo Bice released two successful singles and an album after the show, but several medical problems have made it difficult for him to pursue his career. He hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t had a new release in a while, but thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still time.

Season five brought us Chris Daughtry. He wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the winner, but his songs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Not Overà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ are currently on the charts, as well as everyoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s iPod. His rock edge has really made America fall in love with him.

Fellow competitor Kellie Pickler is heating up the country world with her songs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Red High Heelsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Wonder.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ She recently returned to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to perform, looking and sounding better than ever.

Season five runner-up Katharine McPhee has had modest success, but winner Taylor Hicks is an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ joke. He won the competition more for his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dancingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ than his musical ability and now heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s failing to make his mark in the music world.

His win may be part of the reason the judges are now constantly reminding everyone that this is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a singing competitionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and should not be judged on looks or other abilities. But will viewers listen? Will the next Idol be a dud like Hicks or a superstar like Clarkson or Underwood? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s up to us to decide.

  • eyin

I’m reading the Wiki article right now and not a lot of names ring a bell. Very few. The Beatles catalog probably is not cleared for the show, so I’m really lost here. I’m at work, so when I get home to my computer I’ll probably try and give it a listen.

I think I’m showing my age here. I’m still a baby. Lol

So letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hear some of your thoughts on season 6 – How would you like to see the season play out?
Will Lakisha, due to vote splitting with Melinda, be the big shocking vote-off this season, leaving Melinda to battle it out with Sligh or , god forbid, Hayley?
Do you enjoy the performances this year? How would you advise these idols?

Nice attempt at sarcasm but yes, I do think that Lakisha and/or Melinda will be a shock boot due to vote splitting. I certainly feel that it will be Sligh or Blake who outlast the rest to battle it out with one of the divas. I also think that Hayley will last at least 2 or 3 more weeks particularly if she plays up the sex *** angle. Tears never hurt either. She could shock everyone and make it to the final 6. That is what is so great about this show.

British Invasion week should be very interesting. I think the Idols are going to surprise us.

I am interested to see what Blake, Lakisha, Melinda, and Sligh sing.

  • Lisa B

Gina would sing a hell of alot better if she removed the lump of metal from her tongue.

  • Lisa B

The UK edit had Cat Deeley and Tiffany commenting between performances.

  • eyin

Gina would sing a hell of alot better if she removed the lump of metal from her tongue.

I agree. She could “pronunciate” the words better. Go ahead Gina, take that thing off. Don’t worry, you won’t lose much of your rocker chic cred. Not that you have a very solid one anyway.

Speaking of Gina, didn’t she say she wants to sing her fave song, Pink’s “Who Knew” on the show? I want to see this. I just heard it and I like the song. I always thought there would be a 2000s music theme because of the Gwen appearance, but if she would only appear for the charity episode, then there’s no more basis for that speculation now.

I wonder what song would fit Jordin…

  • Kirsten

squishy: I am interested to see what Blake, Lakisha, Melinda, and Sligh sing.

I’m not. Those people can sing almost anything (well, apparently, Sligh can’t sing anything with a melody, but I’m sure he’ll find a song to suit him).

It’s the others that intrigue me.

What bombastic song can Sanjaya select and then turn into a breathy non-extravagenza?

What ballad will Phil stumble through for two thirds of the song only to end with some triumphant glory notes?

Can Stephanie convert a Who song into a Beyonce/Mariah melisma-fest?

Haley always knocks me off my feet with her song choices. I never know where that girl is going to go next. She’s desperately trying to find an identity in this competition.

Chris R needs to get back to his bouncy roots. I think he should be okay staying on the lighter side of the British invasion.

Jordin might be in trouble. I’m not sure any animated movies featured British Invasion songs (unless you count Phil Collins with his Tarzan movie or Elton John with the Lion King (Tim Rice providing the assists on the vocals for both)). They seem a bit late for the era though, NO?

Gina should be in her element shouting something. I would fall off my couch laughing if she did Helter Skelter.

  • jersey

According to Dave White, “pronunciate” is an actual word. He claims to have looked it up. (although it is currently underlined in red in the previous sentence).

ETA: I just looked it up on dictionary.com . It is in Websters New Millennium Dictionary – usage – rare.

  • lynnie

I think one of the reasons why I am fearing Brit Invasion week is that I get the feeling that very few of these idols know or understand any of the musical heritage that paved the way for the current music scene. Musicians from as far back as Chuck Berry, through the Brit Invasion, the psychedelic era, heavy metal, punk, grunge, rap – you name it- they have all built on what was there and added something new to the mix. I may be wrong, but I feel like many of these idols are almost working in a vacuum, with little or no understanding of the music that came before and the context in which it was made. I think if they had this musical depth, they would be capable of bringing a lot more to the stage when they do these theme weeks- because imo, you have to experience the song and its context in order to make it your own.

  • Lisa B

The girls will go for the powerhouse voices.

Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Lulu, Cilla Black and Shirley Bassey.

Sanjaya should look at the Donovan catalogue, or even early Cat Stevens.

  • Tony

My mom just asked me to make an album of all of Melinda’s songs. Then she looked at me weird after I told her that I’ve been voting for Sanjaya all this time. lol But after I explained to her why she shouldn’t want Melinda to win (because a song like “My Funny Valentine” would NOT be on her album), she doesn’t want an outright win anymore.

After she heard Elliott’s “Movin On” she said she would be picking up a copy of his album too.

  • Lisa B

Jersey it used more in the UK.

  • squishy

I am particularly interesting in seeing what Lakisha sings because I think she is the least versatile of the above 4 singers I listed. I want to see if she can show her versatility by singing something totally different than the usual Whitney/Aretha/Billie Holiday, etc stuff.

    Very interesting.

I hope the Idols get into the spirit of it all and dress a little early 60′s British style.

Dave White: My friends are all complaining that this is the most boring season of American Idol ever. And I see their point. There are really no surprises left, unless Howard Stern and VoteForTheWorst.com manage to mobilize the culture-jammer troops into a consistent showing for Sanjaya. Otherwise we’re just waiting to see, in the words of my friend Tony, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“which girl in a wig wins.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

It’s interesting how many articles I’m reading that are complaining about this being a boring season.

Is this typical of this point in the season? I’ve only paid attention to TWoP in the past, and well, they are without pity. So every year pretty much gets trashed. I’m just wondering if this has happened in the general press as well.

I’m not trying to compare seasons, but it can be about perception. If the press increasingly slams this season as being boring and useless and full of terrible singers, people may start to believe it. But, if they do it every year, clearly, the slamming has no effect.

  • folk

omg. yes, all the season 6 contestants are just plain old stupid.

I agree 1000% that the people on the show this year lack some connection with past music. You could really feel it with Diana Ross. Not even the divas could connect. So predictions: the divas will do fine, Haley -ok, guys = Phil will be cheesy, neither Chris R or Blake can actually sing very well but might be fun. Enjoy the heck out of this week because the next 4 weeks: Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Latin and country nite. It’s just going to be dismal. My preferred order of boot: Phil, Chris R, Stephanie, Chris S, Sanjaya, Blake, Lakeisha, Jordin or Melinda for the win. Many articles are referring to the fact that the show is boring this year so I don’t think you have to be a Season 5 obsessive to feel something is missing.

You can be 15 and have real deep connection to music so it’s not age. Sanjaya actually is better than most in this area.

I’m very interested to see what songs they do. I hope that they pick good ones that are familiar to the audience. After being forced to do Diana Ross songs last week, the guys should shine this one if they pick right. Blake and Chris R will have the best look for that theme. Of the girls, Gina and Jordin are most likely to pick upbeat songs (remember Jordin did a Pat Benetar song recently). I just can’t see Lakisha doing anything different from what she has been so hope she surprises me. I just can’t make myself care what Hayley does but can’t wait for what horrors that Sanjaya will put us through. :blink_tb:

Nice attempt at sarcasm but yes, I do think that Lakisha and/or Melinda will be a shock boot due to vote splitting.

No sarcasm intended- I do believe Lakisha will end up being the big vote-off shocker – she’s got a great voice, but there is something missing in her performances.

I certainly feel that it will be Sligh or Blake who outlast the rest to battle it out with one of the divas. I also think that Hayley will last at least 2 or 3 more weeks particularly if she plays up the sex *** angle. Tears never hurt either.

I think Hayley may end up lasting well into the competition- I think a lot of the grandmothers and the little girls love that kind of singer, and if she continues with her sympathy cries, esp after Sanjaya is voted off, she could have enough votes to keep her in.

And yes Lynnie I have enjoyed many performances this season. How many have you enjoyed? Oh wait, are you even watching this season?

Yup, I’ve been watching and posting since the first girls night.
I’ve enjoyed some of the singing, but nothing yet that I wouldn’t mind taping over.

As far as advising the idols why in the name of Finn would I? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a reality TV watcher not an effing agent.

Well, there have been many season 6 posts discussing how the idols should dress, what they should sing, and how they should interact with the judges, for example. Obviously, as you have pointed out, not everyone is interested in those things.

I watch for the singing. I watch for the drama. I watch for the snark.

The singing hasn’t been that great for me so far, but I continue to have hopes each week that they will pull out something truly idol worthy – I had hoped this for Brandon , but unfortunately, never got to see it. I am still hoping to be blown away by Blake and Sligh.
As for drama this season, well, I’m not gonna hold my breath!

  • Metta

The girls will go for the powerhouse voices.

Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Lulu, Cilla Black and Shirley Bassey.

My dad is a HUGE Shirley Bassey fan. Needless to say, I grew up listening to a lot of her music. I’m not crazy about her, but I do appreciate her renditions of Big Spender, and What I Did For Love (from A Chorus Line).

My dad has every single recording of hers in all formats (records, cassettes, CDs). Every year for the past 20+ years, he attends her annual performance at Carnegie Hall in NYC and sits in the same seat, near the stage. At the end of the show, when she is given a bouquet of flowers–or they’re tossed on the stage–Shirley always walks over to the side of the stage near my dad and throws flowers at him until he catches one. This is their ritual, every single year. It’s pretty funny, really. He has tons of autographs and great photos where she’s posed with him at the stage door after shows.

Now you see where I get it from. Overinvestedness is genetic.

Diana Ross songs are lame but the Supremes had some fun songs. This group also picked some real snoozers – Endless Love OMG. This season seems boring to me compared to Season 4 where I thought Constantine was alot of fun. When Sanjaya goes, it’ll be a real snoozefest in terms of reality TV entertainment. Why don’t they get Blake’s friend on the show? He’s rad.

  • folk

supremes songs are the equivalent of modern pop drivel.

  • Kirsten

folk: maybe because diana ross songs are not actually that good.

It depends on your definition of good. Sometimes, music is just good fun. Diana Ross songs are about hooks and melodies. They may not be Shostakovich (okay, they aren’t), but most people have probably danced to at least one of them and can hum a few bars.

The producers threw a softball to the contestants with this theme and most of them swung for the fences and whiffed the ball instead.

I give full credit to Blake for trying to modernize the song but keep the melody in tact. He clearly understood the music and tried work within it’s framework. That the song ended up anemic means that he just has more to learn.

It’s Chris Sligh that horrified me with what he did to that melody. He pounded it until it there was nothing left of it. Maybe next week he can sing the entire song using only quarter notes in the same chord. Heck, only use one note. He either did not understand what makes a Diana Ross song appealing or he decided he didn’t care.

No, that is not the point I was trying to make. I was merely asking if this is a common occurence in the press or not.

I believe it was MJ that pointed out that every year the press complains that the auditions are mean and go on too long. So, the complaints fall upon deaf ears and have no effect on either TPTB or the viewing public.

So, this boring talk may be a yearly subject or it may be an example of the press turning on the show (which still may have no effect on either TPTB or the viewing public).

hezzer19: Wow. I guess Taylor does really suck then. Who knew?

Believe it or not, but I’ve met people who have not gone to a movie or watched a TV show because they’ve read/heard it sucked.

And certainly, there are many politicians who seem to think that if you tell a lie frequently enough, people will believe it. And it may surprise you to find out that some people do. There are many who still think that there are WMD to be found in Iraq and that Saddam had something to do with 911 despite numerous reports coming out that neither were ever true. Some people even believe that Taylor Hicks got 64 million votes on finals night because it has been written frequently enough.

Regarding the discussion about current pop music and the “oldies”. guess i would be considered to be on the fence about some current pop tunes, primarily due to what I perceive is a utter lack of attention to lyrics and meaning, I mean damn, “my humps” got won an grammy award for Pop duo performance, and that is just sick. Give me clever, fun, interesting beats and hooks, show some intelligence with those words, make it mean SOMETHING, even if what you are saying is nonsense. at least have a point of view. I mean The Ramones did not have great lyrics in their songs, but I could get wrapped up in the attitude 10 seconds into the song.
current music, most of it, I really like and I listen to everything, rap, gospel, rock, alternative, opera, r/b,neo-soul,
even some country and of course, the classics. It is all good.

LOL Folk. That happens all the time. New music sucks. There is nothing but crap on the TV (57 channels and nothings on). They haven’t made a good movie since the 70′s.

I’m sure that cave elders back in the day said “You call that a painting? Why, that doesn’t even look like a wooly mammoth. Back in the day, you could practically see the creature hurl Zurg into the bush. There is no life in today’s paintings”.

This blog is hardly unique. What people always forget is that the good examples live on while the bad examples have generally faded away. For every Casablanca, there were tonnes of horrible, stilted, badly-acted movies. Modern times are full of both the good and the bad so it always seems worse than it is. Plus, there is always nostalgia for the past.

IMO, there will always be three basic camps:
    1) Everything today is crap. I miss the good old days.
    2) Everything today is fantastic. Old stuff is boring (some won’t even watch anything in Black and White).
    3) There is some good and bad in every generation.

And something does not have to be complicated to be good.
I believe that having knowledge of a variety of musical genres and eras can only add to one’s creativity, whether you’re writing your own songs or performing someone else’s. I think some of the most innovative performers build on what’s gone before them, add their own twist, and come up with something new.
*** or Hayley standing up on stage blandly singing songs while posing and smiling for the camera are good examples of what happens when performers lack musical depth and don’t make the effort to understand what the song is even about.

It’s not so much that Season 6 is boring as it is following a season that was very under-rated but had singers who were very diverse with no clear cut winner. IMO, that added to the entertainment. AI took the show in a different direction after Season Three. They wanted diversity and went after it during one of the most hyped seasons…Season Four. Season Four had a lot of diverse talent but IMO, the season was a bit of a letdown because it was clear from the beginning who the winner was. The real fun of voting was removed.. Season Four had the most diversed singers to date but Season Five was more fun to watch because the “title” could have gone to anyone of the singers from that season.

Season Six took two steps backwards, as far as diversity is concerned. That’s why it’s now considered boring. We’ve grown accustom to the diverse group of singers and now we have eleven of the same kind and not very good kind either. You can count the talented ones on one hand..

Krsiten, you need to stop making sense so early in the morning…lol

I don’t know. Shout doesn’t scream “British Invasion” to me. I mean, the song was done first by an American band in the 50s. I hope just because it was done by a brit invasion star that it doesn’t count for British invasion. That would be really lame.

the article in the charleston gazette was by a student at poca high school — the opinion is one that i would not particularly value — filled with the exaggerations of a young person who thinks she knows something and with the bias that one is a only a good singer or successful if he/she is heard on the radio. based on what i hear on the radio when i travel with my children, good music is not a requirement for radio.

I appreciated his attempt to make it sound like Coldplay, er, I mean, original, especially since I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a crappy song to begin with. I think it will be easier to play it straight this week. I think he would sound good on The Holliesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Carrie Anneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (actually, now that I think of it, that would be better for Blake)

Thanks for the link to The House of the Rising Sun, Lisa B. Love that song but I guess it wouldn’t work for AI not to mention none of them could pull it off.

I can understand why some people think this season is boring but don’t know what’s accomplished by saying so. As for them not appreciating music history, I’m not sure they have enough time for that. They have to pick their songs early, get them cleared, and work out the arrangement/rehearse. My kids like the Beatles and one is very into classic rock so this would be right up their alley so you never know.

  • t2

I am a big fan of many of the artists of Season 5 (as well as some of the previous seasons.) I find this season incredibly interesting though — not so much from a musical standpoint, but from a strategic standpoint. IMO, there is no way they can let Lakisha or Melinda win because it would be a rehash of Season 3, and that would quickly sit them directly on that jumping shark.

So…if it’s not a Lakisha or Melinda win, then who is the next AI? I tried to list the remaining contestants in boot order, and honestly it could go a number of ways. In the meantime, although I would agree this is not the most talented group they have ever had, there are some very interesting players. Who knows what Chris S/Blake will do with a song? Will Lakisha ever change it up? Haley/Sanjaya are getting progressively better each week – will there be a come from behind winner?

Hey this is interesting stuff to me because this show is like a big puzzle to me.

And sue me, I really, really like Phil Stacy’s voice.

I seem to recall some fanfair over the winter where they said that they had gotten clearance to do Beatles songs (whether or not they will pay for the rights remains to be seen). I thought that is why there was all the talk of Sir Paul being on.

Dingo: Lisa, I am both looking forward to it and dreading it all at the same time. My expectations are through the roof because of the genre and Im sure I will be sick to my stomach when I hear them butcher some of these classics.

I thought Queen week would be a MASSIVE train wreck last year and it was actually quite good. On CI, Gordon Lightfoot week was anticiapted to be a disaster, but surprisingly, the kids did extremely well (and Gordon was a very gracious coach). On the other hands, AI has made hash of theme weeks which seemed like a gift.

I am cautiously optimistic for next week. The British Invasion encompassed a lot of styles and a lot of singable tunes. So, there is rich material to mine. These kids are still finding their AI-legs though, so who knows.

actually some of the lee hazlewood-nancy sinatra collaborations were pretty great in a kind of cowboy psychedelic way. i read he moved to sweden in the early 70s and made more trippy music out there.

i got a kick out of dave white’s reference to the mentors. they are a hardcore comedy-punk-porno band whose work is more raunchy performance art than anything else. i happened to know el duce and he was actually a very sweet guy in person but always kind of in character and doing these little social experiments, borat-like. after he was hit by a train, the band lived and lives on, but without his ironic wit. i just got their new cd in the mail from moosed*ck, their drummer. another nice guy! his wife and i are good friends.

Okay I’ll go back and read and listen to links and stuff in a bit… but I found this PRICELESS video on my myspace bulletins just a few minutes ago. It’s from the Blaker Girls myspace (yes, I added them as a friend *hangs head*), and it is effing HILARIOUS. It was made by one of Blake’s friends that was at the top 16 taping… I’m serious, if you haven’t seen it, WATCH. I was roaring.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the great YouTube links this morning! I don’t know much about the true British Invasion music (so I thought) and I have to admit I was sorta disappointed at the thought that the finalists would be limited to tunes from the 60s. I was hoping they could do anything, as long as it was by a British artist.

Anyway, after checking out these links, I realized I actually *do* know some of these songs! I hope Blake sings “Time Of The Season” by The Zombies!!

Sarah, I’m a Blaker Girl too. Heh.

By the way, it seems that the media really likes Blake, EW, AOL, and the media in general etc are always talking wonders about him. THey like his contemporary vibe and smooth voice.
They think he has potential to do very well in the music business. I think they are absolutely right! Blakelicious! :thumbup_tb:

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Glad y’all liked the video. I mean, that provided for one of the best laughs I’ve had in a while. :)

Ana – it’s good to hear that the press likes him. Hopefully that won’t work against him – i.e. him believing his own hype (like a certain unnamed contestant did last year, LOL). Anyway, I think he’s smart and very talented and has much potential to be successful in the industry. His voice is not the most technically skilled of the finalists, but it IS very good, and beyond that, he has the X-factor in spades, IMO.

Truly, if he and Melinda were not in this season, I doubt I’d be interested. I like some of the others too, but Blake and Melinda are the ones who keep me tuning in each week. I really hope it ends up between those two in the finale. THAT would be a great show, for me. :)

The person who wrote that article for the Saturday Gazette needs a fact checker. No one can be a one hit wonder until they have put out a sophomore album. Taylor’s Cd has only been out 3 months, and, she is calling him a flop and a dud? Never mind he is burning up venues all over the nation, and, other great things he’s done, such as Grand Marshall of the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Why is it everyone is so obsessed with the sales of a CD out of the gate? The real test lies in longevity in the business. Some of these people who are hot right now, could end up being the one-hit-wonders, not the other way around. If the criteria for being a superstar rests in first CD sales, then Kelly Clarkson could also be considered a flop. It wasn’t until her Breakaway album, that she garnered huge success.

  • radname

watching clay as elvis makes me appreciate elvis that much more lol, aint no body move like that man moves, when people try to they somehow look goofy, yet when he did it, it was sexy (probably the same way some of you feel about taylor)also i don’t know what the leather jacket is about? that’s more james dean than elvis, who usually wore suits in his early days

  • radname

then Kelly Clarkson could also be considered a flop.

didn’t kelly sell something like 3 million of her first cd?

british invasion night isn’t going to be anything special. of course we’ll have Blake who will probably pull out an awesome obscure band but i think everyone else will be singing elton john or phil collins songs. if current music counts we’ll probably see some corinne bailey rae or joss stone. if the beatles are cleared we’ll see some of that as well. Sligh might have a tough time finding some good christian band to sing but he’ll sound stupid and will have no stage presence anyway.

Afan – British invasion means early 60′s music from Britain (stuff after the Beatles broke through. None of the musicians you mentioned (except) Beatles would fall into this category especially the Christian music you suggest for Sligh. Some bands: Herman’s Hemits, Dave Clark Five, Hollies, etc. Think Austin Powers and you’ll get the vibe.

For anyone who thinks Kelly Clarkson’s first album wasn’t a success, here is her chart run for “Thankful”:

    Week 01: 297,000
    Week 02: 134,000
    Week 03: 99,000
    Week 04: 93,000
    Week 05: 78,000
    Week 06: 105,000
    Week 07: 88,000
    Week 08: 75,000
    Week 09: 81,000
    Week 10: 67,073
    Week 11: 60,455
    Week 12: 49,553
    Week 13: 48,958
    Week 14: 38,669
    Week 15: 34,677
    Week 16: 32,387
    Week 17: 28,469
    Week 18: 26,097
    Week 19: 24,442
    Week 20: 22,435
    Week 21: 21,022
    Week 22: not available
    Total: 1,503,857

As of 05-23-06, the album had sold 2,510,720 copies. While it does not compare to her sales for “Breakaway” [5,608,688 as of 12-19-06], it was definitely a success.

Regarding the media’s perception of American Idol, guess which season prompted this from MSNBC:

“For a show that pretends to be a singing contest, it’s ironic and pathetic that only a few minutes were dedicated to showcasing those who are truly talented. Despite watching hours of auditions, it’s unlikely that we’ve seen even just a few of the finalists who will eventually become household names.”

Oh, I thought when they say British invastion night they just mean songs sung by british people, my bad.

Nevada, you have to remember that 5 years ago, the record industry was a very different place. You could not get albums easily off the internet and digital downloads were not nearly the phenomenon that they are today. I think if Chris would have put out his album 5 years ago, with his popularity and buzz, the record would have sold 500k- 1mil in the first week. This goes for Taylor as well. Not a lot of people are buying albums anymore and especially not in the first week.

Kelly Clarkson’s debut album “Thankful” was released on 04-15-03. Today is 03-17-07, so we have yet to pass the four-year mark in Idol sales history. That makes the “five years ago” issue a non-starter.

Then there is the suggestion that no album in the past four (or five) years has moved more than 500k in its debut week. Not true.

Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Britney Spears, and Clay Aiken all released albums in 2003 that sold more than 500k in the first week.

According to HDD, in February 2004, Norah Jones had first week sales of 1,026,875. In March 2004, Usher had first week sales of 1,087,954; second week sales were 470k, third week sales were 452k.

In May 2004, D12 had first week sales of 552k

In August 2004, Now16 sold 501k in its first week. Also in August, Tim McGraw had a 755k first week.

In November 2004, Eminim sold 737k in the first week, 927k in the second week, and 468k in the third week. Meanwhile, Shania Twain had a 530k first week, and U2 enjoyed a 838k first week’s sales.

In January 2005, The Game sold 587k in the first week in the midst of the post-Christmas sales drought.

In March 2005, 50 Cent had a 1,140,638 first week; the second week’s sales were at around 770k.

In June 2005, Coldplay moved 737k CDs in the first week.

In September 2005, Kanye West managed 860k in sales for week one.

In December 2005, Mary K Blige coasted to a 727k first week.

Just a sampling of artists who managed, without an assist from American Idol (except for Clay) to sell more than 500k in the past FOUR years in a market which everyone assumes cannot support these kinds of numbers.

    Nevada,
I just heard MSNBC say something similar to that a few days ago so either they are repeating themselves which I do not doubt because that station is awful or they are talking about Season 6.

It’s actually from an article regarding AI4, but the same things have been said since AI2. And the MSNBC contributor, in particular, tends to repeat himself a lot.

Considering that American Idol dominates the ratings every season, it never comes as a surprise to me that Fox’s competitors take shots at the show every chance they get.

Did you cut your hair like Britney? HOT.

Um no, sorry. LOL. It actually doesn’t look much different, but MUCH healthier.

Just saw that Carrie Underwood is going to be the musical guest on SNL next week.

    Nevada,
so true. they either take shots at the show or try their darndest to get the competitors on their show. Joe Scarborough was saying all kinds of incorrect things about Taylor and finally he showed up on his show. CNN and MSNBC do anything they can to ride the idol wave and they make a lot of stuff up too. They try to get ratings from idol whether their information is true or not.
