Michael Orland, the ”Idol” pianist/arranger, talks about his favorite moments from ”Idol Gives Back,” helping Phil and Chris find their niche, what to expect from Bon Jovi week, and more

What can we expect from Bon Jovi week?
I think the guys definitely have an advantage singing Bon Jovi songs. Whatever the girls do, they should get extra props for having to sing a guy rock & roll-vibe song.

You’re working with Chris, Phil, and Jordin this week. Has the theme been tough on Jordin?
It’s tough for all the girls, though I can’t speak for Melinda and LaKisha because I’m not working with them. What I will say about Jordin is that the second it was announced we were doing a Bon Jovi week, she requested her song early. She knew exactly what she was going to sing.

Was ‘Idol Gives Back’ a secret Emmy ploy?

My, my what a devious mind my journo pal Nelson Branco has! He just sent me this catty email: “In my opinion, ‘Idol Gives Back’ was all about trying to steal the Emmy from ‘Amazing Race’!'” …….

……..”The Emmys would have to be pretty mean not to recognize a show that raised over $60 million for various charities,” says Nelson. “Producer Nigel Lythgoe is guilting them out! They even brought Elvis back from the dead to insure their win! I love it. The irony, should ‘Idol’ win this year, is that this season is such a disappointment and doesn’t deserve to win (last season was it’s best season to date).

How snarky of you, Nelson! This season ain’t over yet! You Sanjaya fans sure die hard.

Bucky Covington CD Debuts at No. 1

…The album’s reviews have made it one of the most critically-acclaimed CDs to come out of the “American Idol” franchise, and one of this year’s best-reviewed country albums. Bucky’s current single “A Different World” is poised to break into the Top 20 on the country radio charts, while the video has reached No. 4 on GAC’s “Top 20 Countdown.”

Bucky’s popularity was evident recently at a Wal-Mart in Fayetteville, N.C., where he signed copies of his CD for eager fans until 1:30 a.m. It was an eventful evening that included a prom group who left their party early to meet Bucky and a woman who had to be taken to the hospital after she fainted in line but refused to leave until she had gotten her autograph.

Brad Paisley Checks Chattanooga for “Ticks” on Tour Opener

…Kellie Pickler, who held the second spot, has the pleasantly twangy voice of Pam Tillis and — it must be said — the curves of Dolly Parton. Anybody would notice this, no matter where they were sitting. A former finalist on American Idol, Pickler sings great, taking on “9 to 5″ with a lot of sass. However, the young guys in my section couldn’t contain their giggles every time she leaned all the way over to shake hands with fans in the front row. Watch out!

Still, Pickler nailed “I Wonder,” even as she choked up on the last line (“your little girl is off to Tennessee”). The folks in the rafters couldn’t always understand her stage banter, whether because of her nerves or the sound system, but she proved to be quite charming nonetheless…

Sanjaya, Simon Cowell, Howard Stern, and Dave Della Terza

…Then he made a point that should not be missed. Who will win, he said, is “totally unpredictable, based on each week’s performance.” That is to say, there is no way to predict who will win American Idol because you don’t know ahead of time what genre is next on the calendar.

Clearly, many people have picked up on the perpetually and perennially boorish Simon Cowell’s special animosity towards the kid, since he never bothered to disguise it, except in being careful, after Sanjaya’s not-so-CBGB downfall, not to emphasize “American” when he said, “Based on the fact that we’re supposed to be finding an American Idol…” Obviously, industry players know quite well that America Does Not Decide…

Hawthorne girl live at the Apollo
A young woman with a dream wows audiences in New York.

The girl from Hawthorne took the stage like she owned it, smiling and confident, hitting her notes with sharpshooter accuracy.
This wasn’t just another high school stage, and the people out there patting their hands together in polite applause were just waiting for her voice to break. This was the legendary Apollo Theater, and for a young singer like Dwanna Orange, this stage was hallowed ground.

Just 17 years old, Dwanna had seen her share of disappointment. But she knew she had the voice – knew it with such certainty that she had chosen a Whitney Houston standard for her performance at the Apollo….

…She tried out twice for “American Idol,” once driving with her parents all the way to San Francisco for the audition. But both times, the judges thanked her for coming and sent her home. “I didn’t even make it to Simon,” she says…

‘Idol’ spotlights E.Ky. school; governor not happy

…But Fletcher said the segment emphasized Appalachian stereotypes and did not mention the strides the state has made in improving literacy.

“They took what was a success story and turned it into something that was not really a good reflection on Kentucky,” Fletcher said Thursday during a visit to Pikeville.

Fletcher’s press secretary, Jodi Whitaker, said the governor’s office received eight calls Thursday from people who either wanted to help or were upset about what happened on the program.

Beckham Bates principal Twyla Messer said Idol officials learned about the school through an organization called Save the Children.

Fletcher said he had contacted Save the Children with his concerns.

The charity said the program played a positive role in helping eastern Kentucky.

“I can see where the governor would want a fuller picture,” said Mike Kiernan, spokesman for Save the Children.

“But in terms of the treatment of children and families, we thought it was a fair and accurate.”…

Soulful à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ singer has the lounge act in his jacket pocket.

…An acoustic reading of his original à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Fallà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was the most encouraging indicator of Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ long-term career viability. Both the song and his sensitive reading were powerful.

While heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s genuinely soulful, Hicks is not the reincarnation of Otis Redding. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not even in the same league as Gregg Allman or Steve Winwood. 90 years young, he’s my idol

Heroes aren’t as easy to come by as American Idol or the NBA playoffs might lead you to believe. A high-flying dunk or a soaring vocal doesn’t necessarily vault somebody into idol status. True role models leave their mark on a personal level and provide lessons that follow you and guide you through the rest of your life.

Everybody needs somebody to look up to, and my somebody comes in the form of an old man with a youthful disposition and a gigantic heart. His name is Sam Wynn, and he is my grandfather….

…Because of my grandpa, I have learned that we all need someone to inspire us and that we’re never too big — or too old — to have an idol. He is a larger-than-life personality who has seen so much water under the bridge in nearly a century on this planet. He was a captain in the Army and had a successful career in sales, but he still hands his highest admiration to the Irish immigrant who gave him her acceptance and an Army cot on the floor of her house in the late 1930s.

Lebron James might change the game of basketball and Melinda Doolittle might someday change the face of music, but a real idol changes the inner core of everyone he meets…

    A case of misplaced priorities

Both stories make for enticing headlines and cocktail party conversations but, after all the media hype is over, what have we really learned?

Good morning everyone and a BIG BIG thank you to Lisa B for posting ALL the daily articles..
About Kellie P being in Chattanooga this past Thursday night with Brad Paisley, must say, did NOT expect that one.. Lisa B.. I had no idea she was here performing at the UTC arena..

Drat, I was hoping to read Dave White’s column this morning.

Oh well, I did manage to find some previews for all you out their in MJ land who are heading out to the Kat concerts. There are a bunch of videos up on YouTube from MixFest in San Antonio. Most of them are just 19 second phone video clips. Here is a sampling:

Dangerous (one of many clips from the song):

Open Toes (there are 3 different mini-clips, but here is one):

  • radname

I know some girls that went to that concert last night, they weren’t allowed to bring cameras in. I think they tried to meet kat earlier, but there was a huge fence between in, so kat stuck her hand out for them to shake and sign stuff which i thought was nice of her.
About Jordins Bon Jovi choice, i have a feeling she knows exactly what suits her voice. With A Broken Wing she had actually sung earlier (i saw a video of her at 14 singing it) so maybe she picks songs she’s familiar with?

  • radname

Katharine also updated with a video blog yesterday (which she was high on caffine so it’s quite hilarious) but she said they had three days to prepare for these miniconcerts with the choreography and such.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Wow.. yet again McTatas completely missed the meaning of the song. Mary Jane isn’t about vocal acrobatics.

Pretty ironic considering she’s a bit of a Mary Jane herself.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Katharine’s voice isn’t and never will be my cup of tea, but she did a nice job on Mary Jane (although the Christina melisma at the beginning has got. to. go.) I will give her this, she sounds so much better on those haunting-sounding songs than she does on the crap songs on her album.

Maybe instead of the Norah route for her next album, she should do something in the vein of Enya or Lorena McKennitt (however you spell her name). I don’t think her voice is very strong on its own, but some nice echo effects and reverb really compliment her moreso than the Timbaland production.

  • t2

Hmmmm….what Bon Jovi song has Jordin sang in at least 10 competitions? I am sure that is what she will be singing on Tues. Too bad someone didn’t mess with her and pick the song first…

And, no I don’t know what the song is, it’s just a pretty discernable pattern.

  • radname

I don’t think Katharine missed the meaning of Mary Jane at all, the lyric that stands out most for me is “i hear you’re losing weight again mary jane, do you ever wonder who you’re losing it for” this song, me by paula cole are all songs kat has picked for a reason, because they mean something to her.

  • t2

  • t2

LisaB, even though it is a bit of a slow news day, there is so much juicy goodness here:

From the Seattle Times Article you posted here:

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/television/2003683957_tvweekinreview28.html

    This:

“But what really rankled on “Idol” was that “House of Wax” “duet” between Elvis Presley and Celine Dion. Somewhere Col. Tom Parker must be smirking. Thirty years after the King’s death, they’re still finding shabby ways to sell off pieces of his soul.”

    ROFL

The Bon Jovi article is a definite must read. Jon Bon Jovi is actually a very smart businessman as well. AI should have taken a few tips from him on how to do the Charity Event. The man is VERY smart (and still really hot)

    Good morning, all. :)

I’m not sure if this picture of *** is a recent picture or an older picture, but I found it at ONTD and the watermark says FHM.com – one step closer to Maxim. ;)

Also, another *** gem courtesy of ONTD: *** got in a fight with an airbrush and the airbrush won.

  • radname

it’s an older picture. It’s not a photoshoot for FHM if that’s what you’re thinking. As for the airbrush, you’d be hard pressed to find a magazine cover these days that hasn’t been airbrushed. She also has the cover of lucky magazine as well.

  • db

As for the airbrush, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be hard pressed to find a magazine cover these days that hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been airbrushed.

That’s very true, but admittedly, whoever did the airbrushing did a crappy job. She has been made to look unfortunately like a mannequin.

  • emeralgem

OMG… She’s a DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE….dancing machine.. Watch her get down…. Watch her get dowm!!
    That is absolutely hilarious..LOL

Edit: As Justin Wilson would say…I Guarontee… That girl is not capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time..

  • Boulder Soul

….And then I watched the Open Toes clip with the little choreographed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dancingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with the backup singers and spewed coffee all over my keyboard.

    O.M.G. :lol_tb:

There really is a snark God.

    :lol_tb:

…..the lyric that stands out most for me is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“i hear youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re losing weight again mary jane, do you ever wonder who youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re losing it forà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this song, …..are all songs kat has picked for a reason, because they mean something to her.

OK, she wants to move the focus beyond her bulimia yet selects songs about losing weight? :rolleyes_tb:

She also has the cover of lucky magazine as well.

    ***, MAXIM is calling.

  • Boulder Soul

I think Chris has been linked to about 4 girls now….

If he keeps this up, he may be able to secure an endorsement deal from Trojan and maybe even leverage his AI fame into an acting career.

    ETA:
I can see the commercial now….protect yourself with Trojan Brand, for the round headed man.

    “From CNNmoney.com Inside Track (April 21, 2007)
    ONE THAT GOT AWAY

It appears that RCA Music Group, which has first dibs on “American Idol” finalists, had second thoughts about season-five contender Elliott Yamin when it got a preliminary read on first-week sales for his RED-distributed title. Track hears the label group called Yamin’s camp March 27 about the possibility of upstreaming his self-titled album to one of RCA’s imprints, but the singer’s unique arrangement with publisher Sony (NYSE:SNE) ATV makes that shift impractical”

Dear Clive, You blew it with both Elliott and Bucky. Yours truly, JPFan

    P.S. Kat dancing. LMAO.

  • emeralgem

Speaking of Mary Jane.. I bought three pair of Mary Jane crocs today.
I love these LITTLE shoes.. They are NOT as clunky as the originals that came out a few years ago…

  • pj

I find it interesting that Michael Orland says the Bon Jovi theme favors the guys. I would say the theme favors no one. There are plenty of ballads that the divas can belt. There aren’t any “rawkers” in the competition. In fact, the guys might have a disadvantage in that they will be more likely to be compared to the original. It’ll be interesting to see who steps to up to the plate. I would LOVE to see Melinda channel some inner Tina and rawk, but I bet she plays it safe.

ETA: Also LMAO at Kat’s dancing. Heh.

  • emeralgem

pj, JMO.. but I’m not sure Melinda has any inner Tina to channel.

  • pj

    LOL, emeralgem, maybe not. ;)

The LisaB link to the Kansas City Taylor concert review was after Thursday night concert.

I was there Thurs and Friday nights for my first times to see Taylor. His performances were different each night – Thurs night the audience was quiet and politely clapped and cheered and Taylor gave 100% energy performing for us. Friday night (which was first concert booked – Thurs was added later) the crowd was on it’s feet, dancing, cheering and singing along, and Taylor again gave 100% but he definately played off the crowd – danced alot more, talked more, winked and pointed at people (esp. children).

My friend went with me on Thurs and had watched Idol – Taylor and Chris were her favorites – she remarked that Taylor was electric in person. We were 17 rows back.

My sister in law went with me Friday night and had never watched Idol or seen Taylor except on cover of the CD I gave her to listen to before she went to see him. We were in the third row center so could see facial expressions, and she commented after the show that she could tell when he walked on stage that he was shy and an introvert. However, she was blown away by his performance and energy level and said he reminded her of Elvis Presley in certain ways. She thinks he will be able to improve his people skills as time goes on. He did make lots of eye contact with people which she noticed. She’s a school administrator who deals in media relations so she had a different take on things than me.

Venue was 1500 – sold out both nights – maybe 50 empty seats on Thurs. Seemed like maybe 40% men. Slightly older crowd on Friday, still mix of young to old. Great vocals both nights – Same encore both nights – acoustic “The Fall” and whole band for “Take Me To The Pilot”.

I had such a great time – met some other fans – SoulSunshine and I missed each other somehow sadly.

I am going to work on my fear of flying and hopefully will be able to meet up with some of you in the future. I had forgotten how much I loved live music!

  • pj

Dante, I’m so happy you had a good time. :)

  • t2

Rumor has it that Phil is in a Navy rock band. Does anyone have any data on this?

I guess he is really Philferatu in that no one knows his past, he keeps slipping past the judges and he can go through musical genre walls…

  • dante

Nooooooooooo! I don’t want Melinda to go yet – I want Melinda, Blake, Jordin and Phil to be the final 4.

  • pj

Dante, I’d bet money on the final four you want.

t2, Phil has no musical identity, does he? So now he’s a little bit country and a little bit rock n roll?

You know what you get with the rest.

ETA: Phil has no musical identity that he has conveyed to the AI audience. He hasn’t shown it, at least to me.

  • radname

OK, she wants to move the focus beyond her bulimia yet selects songs about losing weight?

She selects songs that mean a lot to her. No doubt some songs will come up that are about weight struggles, or finding out who you are. These are the songs she’s connects with. I don’t really see that as being a bad thing? I don’t know why she should get flack for heaven forbid sing songs that meant something to her.

radname, any predictions for this week?

  • dante

Forgot to say – I logged into chat last night and than my son called from Hong Kong and after we talked I fell asleep while still logged in. Sorry! My son is going to be going back and forth to India for a few weeks for work. Along with Bangkok which he has already been travelling to once a week. He doesn’t like to fly either (panic disorder for both of us) but said he is getting over it from these constant trips. Maybe there is hope for me yet!

I have a wedding to go to later today – will try to come to chat later this evening.

    Have a great Saturday everyone!

  • Boulder Soul

….No doubt some songs will come up that are about weight struggles, ….

WOW, first songs about open toed shoes, now songs about weight loss. Who knew there was a market for such songs.

  • radname

WOW, first songs about open toed shoes, now songs about weight loss. Who knew there is a market for those types of songs.

There are millions of songs about material things, and songs about peoples personal struggles (which can or can not include weight)

radname, any predictions for this week?

Predictions for what? Song choices or who i think is getting voted off? My older sister really wants Phil gone because he creeps her out and finds him awkward on stage, i just want Chris gone.

  • folk

kat has to be one of the worst dancers on the planet.

that was really really poor stage work.

  • radname

I bought some new shelves for my room today, my dad said we needed to put doors on them “so my elvis stuff won’t get dusty” lol.
That being said, does anyone here know where to buy clear album sleeves? I only have one, and i have about 10 other elvis records that i want to put something over so they don’t get damaged anymore.

  • Boulder Soul

kat has to be one of the worst dancers on the planet.

and that is putting it mildly.

I found the perfect Bon Jovi song for Chris!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaqCJkxm4Oc&mode=related&search=

  • pj

    LOL, Jersey!

  • Linny

Kat really lacks stage presence. I think she’s a beautiful girl but what’s to see while she sings? B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!

  • pj

Rut roh! It’s out now that Blake is dating an improv/sketch comic in LA.

  • radname

Maybe it’s just me, but i don’t have to have someone bounce around on stage. If someone just gets up there and sings a beautiful song that’s enough for me. I don’t really need anything else. It’s all about the music for me, not the added stuff, dancing, lasers, fire whatever. According to people who were there, the crowd loved her that night, a lot weren’t really aware of who she was because the other bands (Blue October, Augustana, Red Jump Suit) are not really the same genre, but she gained some new fans that night. That’s what matters to me, and why I prefer her doing this as opposed to performing by herself.

  • radname

Rut roh! Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s out now that Blake is dating an improv/sketch comic in LA.

It’s kind of a shame that the idols have to kinda hide that sort of stuff. Well celebrities in general have to appear “attainable” so when some girl finds out Blake has a girlfriend, they fly into a rage and never vote for him, and write crude stuff on her myspace. Quite pathetic really

  • folk

that is great rad….but kat is not in the genre of sit up there and sing a pretty song. she made an album where she needs choreography….that was her decision. and she sucks at it.

  • radname

she made an album where she needs choreography

How do you make an album that needs choreography? You could say the same thing about the emancipation of mimi, and we see how well Mariah dances.

  • jpfan

Just adding that Kat’s music demands hot choreography. She’s competing with Christina, Beyonce, etc. She’s not doing Norah Jones music where she can just stand there and sing. Her performance looked very amateurish. It’s not like she hasn’t had time to practice either. Please don’t compare Kat to Mariah. Vocally, she doesn’t come close.

  • pj

  • folk

her stage work sucks. and since she primarily selling as as her marketing tool….well, that is not good.

Dante, thanks for your recaps. So glad to hear that you had such a good time :)

  • calimari

She sounded OK on the 15 seconds or so that I listened to that MaryJane song, but I couldn’t justify giving it any more time than that after listening to the 1st 2 links. The choreography was worse than Lisa Tucker & Paris Bennett on the Idol tour, and that was pretty bad…

  • RollTide

LOL at Kat’s dancing. Glad I had a warning before I saw that. But she did a lot better with Mary Jane than Nikki McKibbon did. **cringe** Back in those days, the judges went a whole lot easier on the contestants than they do now.

  • Lu

Retouching is a must with a photo taken with a digital camera, but the goal is to enhance the person, but not make them look fake……..that one, missed.the.mark.completely. Unless you want to make them look like a robot with plastic skin and lips. not a nice job on that at all. I don’t care what magazine it is. crappy job.

ICE SKATING: GI’s Firth to show off skills today

Taylor Firth is not your average teenager.

A 15-year-old from Grand Island, Firth was the first Western New Yorker in 75 years to compete in the senior ladies freestyle event at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She placed 14th against competition that included Olympic silver medalist, Emily Hughes
    and world champion, Kimmie Meissner…

This weekend, Firth is looking to have a little fun, especially with her song choices as she will be performing to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by C and C Music Factory. She will slow it down for her second routine performing to, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ a timeless classic performed by American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee.

Firth is a big fan of American Idol, and has been especially saddened after the recent dismissal of Sanjaya Malakar her favorite
    contestant…

RCA wants Elliott now? Well isn’t that hilarious.

I KINDA want Elliott to take them up on their offer, but the fact that he got to tell them “No” kinda makes it even sweeter.

The one that got away, indeed. :cool1_tb:

  • Desdemona

Well, phooey, I clicked on Kat’s You Tube of “Mary Jane” because someone said it was pretty good. I kept waiting to hear pretty good even to the end, but it still sounded like Kat’s tinny voice – therefore it was not good.

I agree with everyone on her dancing though. Stick with print modeling, kat – still cameras and photoshop are your best friends, along with that magnificently big & sexy fake hair.

    FOR ALL INTERESTED PARTIES….LISTEN UP

    I have a new computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Now, ummm, everybody needs to post all the videos I have missed in the past 3 months. lol

Dave, one of the first videos I checked out on YouTube (after the obligatory Beth Hart check) was Kelly C doing Up To The Mountain the other night. I could watch that one over and over.

Ok, send me some more….where’s some Taylor concert footage?? Metta?

  • Metta

Missgirl – Congrats! Re. Tay footage, you want links to some good youtube stuff?

Just go to youtube, do a search on “taylor hicks”, sort by most recently added, then look for the Best of Boogie Board vids. Or, since I linked to a couple above, just click on the name “best of boogie board”. Those vids are the very best stuff of the tour.

thanks everyone. I’m all caught up now. :)

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to transfer all my “favorites” I had saved on my old computer yet…goodies like Vance Galbert’s Unfamiliar Moon that folk told me about. And Ellis Paul’s Rattle My Cage! It’s going to take me some time to find them all again.

This has made me forget all about my emissions test problems!!

    Nevada, I don’t much like this new Microsoft Vista thingy…but I ain’t complainin’ :)

LOL mad! I told the computer people, “Look, I just want to unplug my old laptop and plug this one up and get YouTube and MJ’s.” What’s so great is that I had $500 left on a gift card from Christmas and today is a tax-free holiday in Tenn…so I only had to pay $169.00 for this new laptop!!!11!!1111! :)

LisaB — thanks for linking Missgirl to my post from last night, and thanks also to dave if he passed the message along.

Missgirl — you’re welcome and congratulations on your new laptop.

And some hard numbers from SoundScan which have been missing till now:

    4 COVINGTON*BUCKY BUCKY COVINGTON 60,814 61,042
    7 DAUGHTRY DAUGHTRY 52,055 2,310,532
    9 UNDERWOOD*CARRIE SOME HEARTS 44,791 5,289,944

This was Carrie’s 75th week of release and “Some Hearts” is easily the gold standard for Idol debut albums. Although Carrie didn’t come close to Clay’s record for first week’s sales and indeed, it took her 15 weeks to catch up with Clay and surpass him, “Some Hearts” has out-performed even Kelly’s second album, “Breakaway” (which had sold 5,199,616 after 75 weeks), with no end in sight…

  • mississippigirl

Nevada, thanks for that SoundScan info. Congrats to Bucky! And Carrie’s success is just amazing. That’s interesting about her surpasssing Kelly C.

Too bad I have all these cd’s in my collection by artists who just don’t sell well in mainstream America. Nothing to take away from Carrie, because she’s so good in her niche, but it just takes a little more to inspire me when it comes to buying cd’s. What I’m trying to say is…..I don’t have Carrie’s cd. lol

I think Taylors cover of “The Wall” is probably the second worst pink floyd cover i’ve ever heard. The first was the Scissor sisters and their disco-fied comfortably numb, i threw up all over the floor when i heard that one.

My boyfriend and I saw Taylor in Columbus on Tuesday. We are both huge Pink Floyd Fans (We saw Roger Waters in concert last fall), and we really enjoyed Taylor’s brief verse from The Wall.

Edited to add: I just watched the YouTube link posted above, and I think that he sounded better in Columbus than in Joliet.

Resurrecting myself from the unposting only to remark that that “cover” was only a tag in the midst of his song “Hell Of A Day” and, as such, was only a reference, not a “cover”, which, IMO gives him freedom to do whatever the hell he likes. I actually thought the melding was brilliant.

Mad – Is that a general admission or assigned seating show? You know it’ll be worth it!

  • madaboutu

Metta………..something different than all the rest. Seating around a pool outdoors. Maybe Taylor will do high dives for us. LOL It is called the Starlite Theater. Griz is going there too.

  • madaboutu

Clay Aiken is going to be at the Starlite Theatre in August after he is at the Greek. Justin has been there and lots of big stars. If it doesn’t rain the only time in May in history, it should be great.

  • Metta

Mad – Interesting! Well, I can’t wait for the recaps.

And everyone is entitled to their own opinion, now aren’t they? De-lurking just to smack someone down is not cool.

    Actually, I’m putting that nicely.

  • madaboutu

Here’s someting interesting too. The IdolWatcher at the Orange County register referred to Taylor as “that other guy” when naming past Idols. If he reviews Taylors concert, what do you think we can expect? He probably has written the review already.

  • madaboutu

    MJ……….???

  • Metta

Mad – I’m curious about the venue. I’m going to track down a link so I can take a peek.

  • madaboutu

Metta…………there isn’t a real picture of the venue, only a kind of nighttime ambience type of thing. I have not been to this casino before, so don’t know the setup. I have asked friends who have been there, but they were there to gamble, not to see a show.

    Mettaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..something different than all the rest. Seating around a pool outdoors.

Is swimming allowed? Heaven Knows as much as Taylor dances around he’s GOIN SWIMMIN for sure…He might want to wear some swimming trunks..Taylor performing in a SPEEDO…Now, that would be FUNNY..

  • Metta

I’m done for the nite. See you all tomorrow :)

  • mississippigirl

Bye Metta, thank you for all the links :)

  • madaboutu

emeraldgem………..I suppose there is swimming allowed, by the hotel patrons during the day, or when they don’t have a show. There is a spa out there too. Supposedly they seat 2,000. so will some people will be way up in between the rocks……….don’t know. Taylor will have to hotfoot it there from Vegas, so don’t know if he’ll have time to swim, and I hope they check the freeways cause those are hellish with work being done on them all night.

  • RollTide

Woohoo!! Taylor will be at Alabama Adventure June 1, and Bo will be there June 29. I’m sure y’all probably already knew that, but I didn’t. I just got the AL Adventure flier in the mail today. :) Bo was there last year and it was awesome.

  • griz

So I just got around to watching Wednesday’s AI, and I’ll say that 90% of it was junk, but I got a buzz seeing Micky Dolenz in the Stayin’ Alive dancing segment haha!! I guess all those audience appearances paid off for him. Love when The Monkees and AI cross paths… kewl.

  • madaboutu

griz, I saw where they had a little “shaker” near Julian today. Did you feel it? There sure will be one next Sunday.

  • griz

mad – nah I didn’t feel that – I think I’m immuned to earthquakes since the Northridge earthquake 10 years ago.

The only earthquake I wanna feel next Sunday is one on the stage LOL!

  • madaboutu

griz………oh yeah! The Northridge was the biggie for sure here in our area. I hope that Pala won’t be like Kansas City. It seems that the casino shows are not as um’ boisterous, shall we say? Anyway, my back is tweaked so I will be begging my chiro to fix me quick this week, so at least I can get up and show appreciation.

Despite being an ardent Taylor ‘tard, I gotta be honest and admit his rendition of “The Wall” completey sucked. Worse than a karaoke performance even. I think even I could do a better version (and that’s saying something)

I wish he’d just sing the songs straight. He has such an expressive voice and such a unique tone, he doesn’t need to fuck around with the melody and lyrics so much IMO.
