First, we had Adam Lambert declaring he was gay. Now Season 6 Idol, Sanjaya Malakar declares…he’s NOT gay.

The media loves their gay Idols!   Or their Idols who aren’t gay.

Sanjaya’s big “confession” happened on last night’s I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here, where he’s been kicking butt for the last two weeks.   From TV Guide:

“Like, yeah, a lot of people want me to be their gay best friend, and I make a really good gay best friend. But I don’t like guys, so it confuses people,” Sanjaya said on Tuesday’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!

Sanjaya’s sexuality came up after jungle-mate Janice Dickinson asked him to put guy-liner on, and he obliged.

“I just feel like she wants you to be gay or something,” Holly Montag told Sanjaya quietly, while they were alone. Co-host Myleene Klass says she sees a budding romance between the two.

“I do hair, and I’ll sit in the corner and knit. So it confuses people,” Sanjaya said to the confessional camera. “A lot of my friends refer to me as their ‘straight gay best friend’ because we’ll go do things that stereotypically you would do with a gay guy.”

Holly, however, still could not wrap her head around the concept of a “straight gay best friend.”

“If you’re not gay then you shouldn’t call yourself gay,” she said.

Scintillating, isn’t it?

Sometimes I can’t figure out if Sanjaya is a) clueless, b) just kidding, or c) a media snark genius. I still am up in the air re: the ponyhawk.

See. This just shows that even straight men DO have to come out and state that they are straight. It’s not just for gays anymore.

I never thought Sanjaya was gay. He’s probably a bit more effiminate than most men feel comfortable being, but I always gave him tons of credit for that. He doesn’t need a spitoon to be a man. It’s a good thing actually….unless you crave a manly man for whom deoderant would do no good. There’s all sorts of levels for everything and it’s all good.

He isn’t gay? I thought he is gay. :) Okay then. :) A straight gay best friend! ROFL!

    A straight gay best friend!

Alright, Sanjaya, I’ll give you kudos for this one. I absolutely fully understand what you are describing here. I remember being 19 and having some really close male friends that I would hang out with, who I was never attracted to (even though they were hunks) but I could talk to them like they were my girl friends. I think this is the kind of relationship Sanjaya is explaining.

Some guys appear to be gay, but are not and some guys appear to straight, but are not. People sometimes have preconceived ideas who is gay and straight, but I have to admit with Sanjaya, I could not tell if he was or not and I am gay.

Oh, I will sleep SO much better tonight!

That sounds like the same convoluted explanation I always envisioned Archie giving. I kinda think Sanjaya is every bit as clueless.

I never heard it called a straight gay best friend before. :) It’s pretty cool. :)

    Nope. no sale.

The wit and wisdom of Holly Montag. But as much as it pains me to say it, I kind of agree with her. I think the term Sanjaya might be searching for is “metrosexual.”

I think he probably is gay but he’s not ready to accept it.

  • madmike2276

If he is not gay, he is one of the most effeminine straight man I’ve seen. I think he is as camp as Christmas, but that is ok. If he is gay and wants to keep that to himself and his loved ones, fantastic, when all is said and done, it’s his business only.

  • Sunshinegirl

I think he probably is gay but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not ready to accept it.

I am NOT, nor will ever be a Sanjaya fan by any stretch of the imagination, but WTF?! This is exactly what people say who want someone to be gay. I imagine Archie will have a lot of people saying the same about him…ridiculous.

  • auntieaimee

I didn’t mean that as an insult nor do I care if he is or he isn’t gay. But I think he probably is.

  • Miss Chaos

He said he spent a lot of time around women relatives, thus doing female things. He said he likes women, I think he realizes that people think he acts gay, but he says hes not. A shame people have to explain themselves so much. I guess if you are in the public eye, sometimes its expected of you.

I never thought Sanjy was gay, even before the rumors that he was he was getting the most booty on tour. LOL.

  • lurksalot

I was always up in the air on this one but I read a transcript of him and Howard Stern when he was on his show and he, IMO, (pretty graphic, losing his virginity, etc.) from that interview is def not gay. At that time he was involved with someone for over a year (female).

I had the impression that the producers of IACGMOH were watching the hullaballoo over Mr. Lambert and used Sanjaya to work the sexuality card for ratings – what, cyncial, who me?

However guyliner is hardly the exclusive domain of gay men – hetero rockers co-opted it decades ago. Shoot I bet even Lou Diamond Phillips, when he played Richie Valens in that biopic, rocked a bit of guyliner.
