Sales News – Week Ending – 12/08/16

For years, little Jackie Evancho from America’s Got Talent landed albums at the top of the chart. She’s outgrown her precocious chid years (now firmly a teen and still dominating the cross-over chart), but Simon has a new child star to promote. This year, Grace Vanderwaal went from a Golden Buzzer to winning the 11th season of AGT (she’s only 18 months older than the show). Her album is out now and she’s 5th in sales and 6th on combined. AGT may not be strictly a singing show, but it is arguably second only to Idol at launching people straight off of reality shows in America (X-Factor and The Sing-Off have their success too, but those success have required some tending before the careers really took off. Perhaps I should not discount Nashville Star which has certainly had its long-term successes). Internationally, the story is a little different.

Pentatonix may have needed to do a bit of social media gardening before they became a mainstream success, but they have really made their mark now. They have the Christmas album of the season with “A Pentatonix Christmas” which is third in sales and combined this year. “That’s Christmas to Me” from last year is 12th and 11th.

The Voice is represented by Jordan Smith working his second successful album. Christmas songs are well suited to his style of music and its no surprise that this album is doing well on the Holiday charts. It is 10th in sales and 12th combined.

The chart is topped by the “Hamilton” mixtape. This features artists singing the songs from the hit Broadway musical (you probably have a better chance of scoring a Hatchimal for Christmas than tickets to that show). Kelly Clarkson appears on the album singing “It’s Quiet Uptown”.

Carrie Underwood appears on Keith Urban’s “Ripcord” album which is 21/23 while Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle have tracks on Now Christmas at 26/39. Lauren Daigle’s Christmas album is 41st in sales.

Mick Jagger had a big week. He welcomed his 11 billionth child while his band scored the number 2 album. I’d make a joke about being old, but my husband saw him in concert earlier this year and the guy still moves like Jagger. I should be so lucky to groove out on stage for hours when I’m 73.

The Canadians seem to have figured out streaming. The Weeknd owns 8 of the top 10 spots leaving room for his fellow Canadian Drake and the Mannequin Challenge song.
