Sales News – Week Ending 09/03/15

Canada may be known for its snow and ice (and cold fronts blowing into the US), but this week, they are heating up the charts.

The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) is a R&B artist from Scarborough who gained the attention of mainstream audiences when his “Earned It” appeared on the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack earlier this year. The song exploded onto the chart and his follow-up “Can’t Feel My Face” became the song of the summer. He is easily going to have the number one album of the week with 325-350K in sales and 400-425K in combined. Nobody else is close. He will be number one in the UK as well.

The Weekend would also be topping the single sales chart this week (with “Can’t Feel My Face” or “The Hills” which sit at 2 and 3) had it not been for his neighbour from down the 401. Hailing from Stratford is Justin Bieber who debuted his “What Do You Mean” last Friday and watched it zoom up the sales chart faster than any song in the history of iTunes. According to Jimmy Fallon, it took 5 minutes to reach the top of that chart. Spotify has announced that the song broke their records for the most number of streams at 22M (One Direction had set it earlier this year with “Drag Me Down”).

Tori Kelly got a boost in sales from her well-received performance on the VMAs on Sunday and her album sits at 12th.
