Sales News – Week Ending – 04/28/16

There is a Queen and a Prince and then everybody else. Beyonce (Queen Bey) is easily topping the chart with her sixth solo album “Lemonade” (she is set to become the first artist to have her first six albums top the BB200). The album was released Saturday night after her HBO special introducing the album. She calls this a visual albums and speculation about whether the album is autobiographical is rampant. The Hive has gone after anybody suspected of being “Becky” or anybody having a similar name to anybody suspected of being “Becky” (pity Rachel Ray who just wants to help us make quick meals). Expect to see “Lemonade” and its tracks on the list for awards (Kayne is already in training for snatching mic’s). Beyonce is an artist who can consistently get enormous sales and she experimented with her sound/vibe with this album.

Speaking of people not afraid to experiment, we have Prince painting the charts purple. He has 5 of the top 6 albums and 6 albums in the top 10. Sixteen of his albums are in the top 50. I kind of wish he could have gotten the top 5, but with TEAs and SEAs, that probably wouldn’t have happened anyway. Plus, if Bey had waited a week, she would be in competition with Drake who is looking at 2M ins sales. That guy releases an album every 6 months and he still manages numbers like that? His fans are hungry.

Our reality singing show competitors are all huddled together. Each major show is represented. The Voice has Jordan Smith, X-Factor has Zayn and Idol has Carrie Underwood sitting at 37th, 38th and 39th respectively.

Lots of people signed up for Tidal to get “Lemonade’s” streams which were exclusive “in perpetuity”. Less than a week later, it is on Pandora. I don’t think “exclusive” or “in perpetuity” means what Tidal thinks they mean. Okay, Pandora is technically not an on-demand streaming service, but pretty close. Some fans are already feeling duped over signing up for Kayne’s exclusive album.
