The water cooler talk, this morning, surrounding last night’s Golden Globes telecast has been centered around host Ricky Gervais.
His no-holds barred zingers, directed at many of the Hollywood elite, including Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, and Robert Downey Jr. (Who said, after Gervais poked fun at his drug addict years, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”)
Gervais is unrepentant, as he tells TV Guide, “I think last year I didn’t go far enough. “This year, I went about right. If anyone was offended, then I don’t care.”
Ha! Personally, I love to see the piss taken out of the Hollywood A list. I mean c’mon…they were just JOKES. Without Gervais, the telecast would have been a monumental bore. And the stars, like Downey, who zinged back? Even better. Some of them, like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen gave as good as they got. “We recall when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian, ” said Hanks. Allen added: “Neither of which he is now.”
Interestingly, some of the stars in attendance thought Gervais was hilarious. The Fighter’s Christian Bale said, “Thank God for comedians…I’m hoping he’s going to keep going further.”
