The dude running the gossip site reporting this bit of gossip is a real bottom feeder–like WAY worse than Perez–but he seems to have some connections and does get some things right…so…

Media Take Out is reporting that newly ousted X Factor contestant, Astro was signed to Jay-Z’s company, Roc-Nation immediately after he was eliminated from the show last night.

Jay-Z, thirteen time grammy award winner, former CEO of Def Jam Recordings and founder of Roc-Nation said, ” I first heard about this exciting new talent and decide to watch some of his performances. Jay-Z goes on to say, “Not only was I impressed with his performances, but to see the confidence he sang with, his lyrics and diction were on point.”

Reportedly, Jay-Z and co are working to get Astro onto Willow Smith’s new track.  Grain of salt, and all that.

I would NOT be the least bit surprised if that’s the case.  I can totally see Jay Z wanting to groom him.  And I bet you Will Smith wants to get in on the action too.  Can’t you see it?  A new millenium “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”.  Let’s call it “Astro of the Hamptons.” :op

Really? Wow…that was quick? Do anybody ever get sign that fast?

Media Takeout is a horrible site, but this would be good for Astro, if it’s true.  But, there are some red flags, it’s hard to believe that they would announce it before the end of the season, and while Jay Z’s label has a distribution deal with Sony, I’m skeptical that LA Reid wouldn’t sign Astro to Epic, or that no other Sony label would sign him.  I think that Sony would put him on one of their main labels, before they would let Jay Z have him, even if they do get a cut of whatever profits he brings in.

  • Kylee

    Pia :)

That is interesting, but I can’t see a 7th place finisher becoming a multi platinum seller.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I refuse to believe anything Media Take Out says just on principle. Humph.

  • Anonymous

So the contestants don’t have the same contractural imbargo that those on Idol do? Interesting. Could not imagine Simon letting anyone he thought could earn him money get away. I would think he would have the right to first refusal. Or a cut of the profits.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Roc Nation also manages artists.  So it might be Roc Nation manages him and Epic is the label.  Take Jay Z’s other artist J-Cole.  He’s signed to Roc Nation but his label is Columbia Records.

  • larc

Whatever, I know at least one sale the obnoxious little sh*t definitely won’t get.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t be surprised if he were signed by both Epic and Roc nation, kind of like Scotty/Lauren’s record deals. I’m done with X factor, so I’m excited to see what’s next for Astro because I’m not interested in the others at all.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I can.  Considering he’s a rap artist and he went remarkably far on a show like this who’s main audience are middle aged, middle class, middle american white women.

Astro is getting notice BEYOND the show. For example.  When I was flying home for Thanksgiving I was watching a video of Astro’s latest performance.  The guy next to me said “That kid’s a STAR.”  So I asked him if he was watching X-Factor.  He said no but he’s seen all of Astro’s videos on YouTube because his friends were talking about him.

There’s a lot of good word of mouth on Astro.

    http://rocnation.com/about/

Roc Nation is a fully functioning entertainment company, including artist, songwriter, producer and engineer management; music publishing; touring & merchandising; film & television; new business ventures; and a music label. Artists signed to Roc Nation partake in full-rights deals, which are all encompassing and include ticket sales, record sales and all forms ofendorsements.

  • Anonymous

i wouldn’t be surprised if that was true. I think he was the most entertaining talent on the show imo. I’m sure we’re looking at a future rap star

  • Kylee

Yeah, but just look at the track record for some of the lower finishing idol contestants. Allison Iraheta for example should have been a star in a perfect world, but the focus was so much on the winner and runner-up that she got lost in the shuffle. Also, look at Pia. She had so much buzz after her elimination and people were sure she would be bigger than the winner. Her single didn’t do so hot. I know this isn’t idol, but I don’t see how the attention will be all on the winner and runner-up. I think most people don’t care about Astro outside of the bubble…

  • Anonymous

I think Astro will be a star. But, of course, it’s impossible to forecast. He seemed to have some pretty good buzz going anyway. Guess we’ll see :)

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I never thought Alison would be bigger than anyone.  But, hey, that’s just me.

X-Factor doesn’t operate like Idol.  For one thing, X-Factor really doesn’t have a defacto management company that gets first dibs on any act.  Which gives them the ability to control things much more. And I’m not even sure if any contractual limits have been put on non-winners like they do on Idol.  Seriously, does anyone know?

And if you look at X-Factor UK history – Simon backs and supports who he likes.  And sometimes he prefers runners up.  Look at 3rd place One Direction.  They’re getting the deluxe treatment over winner Matt Cardle.

  • Anonymous

I can.  Considering he’s a rap artist and he went remarkably far on a show like this who’s main audience are middle aged, middle class, middle american white women.

I agree with both of your points.  First of all, the people who purchased Kelly Pickler’s albums don’t care that she only came in seventh on AI.  They either like her music or they don’t.

Astro is the only X Factor contestant who was getting press from places outside of the outlets that cover the show.  And, unlike most of the others, he’d already started his career before the show started.  He’d made the radio and tv rounds, and appeared on BET at least once.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

If I were LA and/or Jay Z.  I’d develop him slowly like Drake and Nicki Minaj have been.  Before either of them dropped a full album they were making guest appearances on other artist’s songs CONSTANTLY.  Then by the time they dropped everyone knew who they were and they sold like hot cakes.  That’s what I’d do with Astro.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

One thing I noticed that the X-Factor aka Simon Cowell does that Idol used to do less frequently on principle, is ignore how the contest finished and promote more vigorously whoever the heck they want, no matter. Idol has tended to respect where people have finished, but there are obvious, blatant examples of their deciding that they know better than the audience and they’ll put as much vigor, if not more, behind contestants other than the winner.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3XJE5GRAUMYR7Y5RYZUW7SC4U md

If he has already signed, it seems unlikely he would have negotiated the best deal possible.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FDWAXZL5JGEBAPTBYOC5F672YY Janae

I really believe out of everybody Astro will be the most successful. And I’m not just saying this ’cause I’m a big fan of his. I truly believe it. Kid has massive talent and I’m sure Jay-Z will handle him well.

  • rocklet1

don’t underestimate Allison Iraheta.. the girl has a bright future ahead of her.. my opinion one of the greatest voices to come off idol!!!

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

As a matter of fact, could he have actually signed a contract this fast? He’s a minor, I though the court ad to approve his contracts before they could be signed. Maybe I’m wrong though.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Aren’t his parents there with him?  I wouldn’t be surprised if negotiations began under the table a few weeks ago.  Didn’t RCA call dibs on Adam Lambert around Top 8 / Mad World week?

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

As a matter of fact, could he have actually signed a contract this fast?
He’s a minor, I though the court ad to approve his contracts before

That’s a very good point. Minors signing contracts via Idol are public because they go through the courts and that’s how we have found out some of the details of the contract.

Does Jay Z have any affiliation w/ Simon or who ever is supposed to sign X- Factor winners? I say this b/c X-Factor and Simon get first dips on Astro and sorry w/ all the buzz and talent Astro has I don’t see them passing on Astro so Jay Z would get a shot at him. Now I do see Astro saying thanks but no thanks to them to get to Jay-Z but after turning down an offer from them he’d have a waiting period before he could sign with anyone. If the article states he plans to sign w/ Jay Z I could believe that but unless JayZ  is affiliated with Simon/person signing the x-factor winner then I don’t believe Astro is ALREADY signed.I mean  Come on I don’t think anyone doubted he was going to get signed by somebody the only debate is how successful Astro be sales-wise.

But I will throw this out their when Astro was eliminated did you guys pick up that Simon was whispering something furiously to him. My guess is don’t worry Astro i’m signing you. I got you.

  • Anonymous

Wouldn’t surprise me if this were true, or at least that the contracts were in the hands of the lawyers — seems a little quick to be actually signed, since he’s a minor, especially.

I can see somebody wanting to secure him, at least as a development project. If they do, then they have a free hand — If it works out, they could release something quickly to capitalize on his current fame; or if that doesn’t seem right, they can work him along in development until they think he’s ready, using him here and there on other people’s projects, while kind of sewing him up so nobody else gets him; or, if they decide to, just dump him ultimately and do nothing. Seems like signing him doesn’t have any downsides.

As others have mentioned, they don’t seem to have any of the contractual or traditional constraints of Idol — they don’t have to promise anybody a record, or promise that anybody will wait until somebody else releases, or give first refusal to anybody or whatever.

The kid’s talented and, now, well known, and, apparently, hard working and definitely ambitious. I don’t agree with those who think he’s the best kid writer and performer *evah* — I’ve known too many kids with these talents — but he’s definitely got a strong combination of traits plus some fame — even a little notoriety!….

Interesting but aren’t these contestants still under contract to X Facter, as the Idol contestants are for a certain amount of months?

  • Anonymous

Didn’t RCA call dibs on Adam Lambert around Top 8 / Mad World week?

Not that early. According to RCAEd, it was around Top 5.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Roc Nation is affiliated with Sony.  And as I mentioned before is also a management company.  Actually, it’s a full service entertainment company whose LABEL is actually called – “Star Roc”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarRoc

Simon/SYCO has always outsourced management.  They’ve never handled it.  And Simon/SYCO quite often co-signs record deals with major record labels.  Like Matt Cardle/ColumbiaUK or Rebecca Ferguson/EpicUK or Olly Murs/EpicUK.

So I can see with Astro it going down like this.

Management = Roc Nation (probably a 360 deal)
    Record Label = SYCO/Epic co-signing deal.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I honestly have NO idea.  I’m just not going to assume it’s the same situation as Idol.

  • Mateja Praznik

Roc Nation? I don’t think Sony would let Roc Nation steal Astro from them. Sony has the exclusive right to sign any X Factor finalist they want to sign and I seriously doubt they would let Astro go that easily. Plus, kid just go eliminated last night and the season is not over yet. They still have Astro under contract and even if Sony decided not to sign him, he would be unable to sign with Roc Nation.

It’s more likely Astro will be signed to Epic Records under LA Reid and be allowed to collaborate with Jay-Z and Willow Smith.

  • Anonymous

I totally can believe this. I would just think its a little fast. Astro is the real deal.

  • koshka

Was that a white middle aged guy you were sitting next to? LOL He probably has white middle aged female friends. Not necessarily Astro’s target audience. :) (not making fun of you – just the entire Astro situation)

He’ll probably do well until he has to make that kid performer to adult transition.

  • koshka

Excellent. I’d love to know the dirt. :)

  • emmuzka

What’s the hurry? Other than to prevent the artist’s dad/manager/lawyer from actually reading the contract, that is?

Offering a contract to sign practically the same night he got booted sounds potentially exploitative. But we don’t know, maybe they have been negotiations already for weeks, and everything was ready to be signed the moment he was off the show.

  • http://twitter.com/MzMerline Merline D

Roc Nation which is run by Jay Z is a label under Sony Music Entertainment. The Winner of X Factor will sign with Syco in association with Sony. Syco Music also falls under Sony Music Entertainment. There is a good likelihood that he could and will sign with Roc Nation.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Great news if true. He was always my 2nd favorite contestant (after Melanie)

  • sandrajane

MediaTakeOut?  Seriously?  You’re going to use them as a source?  First, no way Jay Z gave an interview with this website, second it was the original source of the Beyonce fake baby stories.  I find it hard to believe he would give an inclusive interview to them, or anybody in his camp leak a story to them.

This website does not get exclusives from the likes of Jay Z.  Only Z listers in desperate need for attention.

If this is true, that was fast. But unsurprising. Astro is the one XFactor contestant with any real shot at being a star. And if anyone knows about turning rappers into stars, it is Jay-Z

  • Anonymous

Astro said in an interview that he decided to try out after hearing LA Reid in a radio interview asking any and all talents to try out, including rappers.

Considering that the majority of mainstream hip-hop consumers are white, they very well might be his target audience, though. (There are actual numbers about this floating around the internet if you want confirmation, but
all you really have to do is look at the crowd at a Jay-Z/Kanye
    concert.)

  • koshka

(See Below) I was responding to this quote – in jest. I don’t think middle aged, white women from the middle class buy rap music. LOL However, I’m quite sure there are more than M/M/M white women watching XFactor.

Considering he’s a rap artist and he went remarkably far on a show like this who’s main audience are middle aged, middle class, middle american white women.

Regardless of your feelings about Astro I am one almost senior middle aged white woman who loves most types of music. Depending on what he put out or collabed with I may or may not purchase it. I don’t have time to read through all the posts but I heard both LA and Simon tell him last night not to worry and that he will be fine…. code for… we want you. Simon is known for signing or getting deals for top 10 contestants. I thought New Direction sucked and look at how he put them together and is turning them into International superstars. No way they are letting Astro go. You have Jay Z, Diddy, Young Money (to name a few) who have a whole stable of talent and they are always looking for more. Astro knew exactly what he wa doing when he tried out for X Factor.

  • Anonymous

Rumors persist that Jay-Z has a teenage son that he’s kept under wraps.  Astro seems to be making light of that.

  • Anonymous

LOL I’m not saying it isn’t true, but Media Take Out just makes up random shit all the time.

  • Deeg

Aren’t XF contestants signed to a contract that gives the show’s label first crack?  LA Reid has already implied that he wouldn’t let Astro go…so not sure that this is true ; they probably can’t even legally sign anything until the show is over.  But he will get signed….So will Drew.  But none of those contracts will be $5 mil guaranteed.  This is the one reality show worth winning- and  yet its the one  with the most chance for shenanigans as the ‘judges’ are voting out contestants – and not the general public.  Hopefully JoshK stands a chance still.  Id like to see someone who is not eligible for Idol win.  Hoping he and Melanie get to the finals – hope she can do something to surprise us in the coming weeks vs just standing there and pretending she’s Celine or Whitney doing a ballad.  (Remember Simon what you did to Drew? Don’t do the same to Mel and Rach)….The thought that either Marcus or Chris could be in the finals makes me wanna throw up…Are the finals gonna be top 3 like UK format?….Rachel is cute as a DisneyNick star but not a $5mill pop star.  Well who is t hough?

Wow!  No wonder the little muffin was so relaxed at his exit last night.

    Willow Smith?  Yechhh.

He looks nothing like Jay-Z.  Fun plot, though.

  • Anonymous

Even if this isn’t true, Astro will likely be signed by someone. He’s a cute, talented kid with a special something. People aren’t ready to vote for a non-singer on a talent show like this, but I think he’ll do well.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure they will have Astro finish high school first and do exactly as you said.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

Oh lawd, we leapt from MediaFakeOut rumors of Astro being signed by Jay-Z’s label to Astro being Jay-Z’s secret love child? Now all Astro has to do is wait a few years and he’ll be old enough to date Janet Jackson’s perpetually 18-year-old love child!

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

No one thought Astro was Jay-Z’s love child.  That part was obviously a joke.  I just thought Astro was hinting at the Roc Nation thing.

  • Tera2

Maybe they are going with that Jay-Z rumor cause Paula said he has eyes on Astro.  Don’t know if he would actually sign him but someone will.  I think Astro is a good rapper, but he needs to develop his own cool rap style to be more commercial, and not this generic ‘street battle fast rap’ he does right now.  I like hip-hop and rap, but I don’t care much for what he does right now to listen to a whole CD of it.  He would work more as a guest rapper on songs.  But he still needs to develop his own style. Tupac, Biggie, Foxy Brown, Rick Ross, Kanye, Drake, Kevin McCall, Tinie Tempah all have their own distinct style and delivery that’s commercial. Even Chris Brown has a cool style and delivery when he raps that I like, even though he known as a very good singer.

Also, Astro’s voice is very youthful and will work better on rap in couple years when he has a deeper voice.  Jaden Smith is young too and rapped on Bieber’s song “never say never” and it works because Jaden’s voice is higher and sounds melodic and musical.  Astro’s voice on the other hand is tough/angry tone, cause he’s more street battle rap style, so a mature voice would showcase him better.  I think Astro will be better as he gets older, and will have some career rapping or writing.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Astro may be in negotiations to be signed, but I doubt that he’s already signed.

  • Anonymous

Right now, Astro is sort of a novelty act.  The main thing he’s got going for him is that he’s “so young.”  Well, he ain’t getting any younger.  Will be interesting to see how much attention he gets when he’s doing the same thing at 22.

  • Anonymous

Wishing him all the best. He’s talented enough. He seems chirpee even after being booted out. Something must be up. I’m glad for him.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

That’s assuming that Astro is frozen in time and doesn’t learn, grow or get better.  7 years from now?  I’m 100% sure he’s gonna get better at this rap thing.

  • http://twitter.com/arhianrod Arhi

Astro is only a novelty act to those who aren’t really familiar with hip hop.  There are a couple of teen boy hip hop groups/singers out there.  Astro is much more authentic then they are.

The biggest problem with the MUSIC INDUSTRY today is the money factors surrounding it. The big labels (Left) are using older methods of signing artists from multi-media outlet like ‘American Idol’, ‘X-Factor’ and ‘America’s Who’s Got Talent’. These shows have been bringing down sales of music rather then raising them oppose to not having them. By these types of shows making Spectacles of Artists. Its caused a major lapse on and hold on original unheard talent.

Instead of singers of rappers striving for a possible call and record deal they prepare for shows full of pretentious levels beyond the norm of life it self. Ironically, this has been helping to destroy the soul within the music making everyone a A&R and judge so when music and songs are put out now a days its below sub-par level of equality. The factors behind the understand of ‘Supply & Demand’ has just gone out the window because there is way too much supply now a days and no demand for it so the saturation of a industry has begun and currently in its mists of being a destroyed art form from massive payola, arbitrated situation of artist placement and basically noise not music on the airwaves.
