Randy Jackson prediction shocker!   Nah, I’m just playing.   Wind Randy up, and he’ll begin spouting the usual predictable pre-Idol spin.   Randy tells People magazine:

Male contestants have dominated American Idol for the past two seasons, but judge Randy Jackson, 53, predicts the upcoming year to be all about the ladies.

‘I think I have to give the edge going in to the girls,’ Jackson told PEOPLE at the Yahoo! Yodel Studio, one-day music event and yodeling extravaganza on Tuesday in New York City. ‘We haven’t had a girl winner in a long time and some interesting talented girls showed up [to audition.]‘

Jackson promises AI season 9, which is set to debut in January 2010 to be ‘a very interesting, different season.

Some interesting, talented girls have shown up? You don’t say!   That the producers will be gunning for a girl to win American Idol this year is a no-brainer.

It’ll be interesting to see how the producers will manage to keep the boys at bay.

Somehow, while female Idols like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordan Sparks sell records (singles in Jordin’s case), they don’t produce the wildly invested Idol fanbases necessary to spawn post Idol buzz and move summer concert tickets…

Obviously he predicts a girl is going to win. I bet anything they’re going to stack the deck in favor of the female singers when it comes to the voting rounds, and TCO will be a girl too.

  • leome

LOL You don’t have to be an idol judge to predict such a thing.

I like how he says they showed up! yeah yeah, that has nothing to do with Idol looking for them this year or anything.
I think season 4 worked well, they had a girl winning and still had the boys and their fanbases which gave them a good tour and some buzz.
With idol being a pop show, girls tend to do better on radio, cause pop radio loves them some pop girls, even if they don’t have the guy’s fanbases.
Or idol does come in 3… and season 9 will be like season 3 and season 6, the non charismatic ones.

  • dreyraglin

Wow I think I’m the only one who is glad the girls are getting back into the spotlight on Idol. The boyfest of Idol for the past two season was very much overkill. The girls are actually more marketable than the guys anyway whether they don’t sell a good Idol concert. Unlike the guy winners the female winners easily win over fans who do not care to even watch Idol which to me is why the girls are more successful than the guys. Look at Ruben and Taylor as to where are they now. And you can’t say David Cook yet cause you really have to see how his second album goes to see if he has the staying power. Kris again we will have to wait and see before we count him as a success as well and the same goes for Adam.

I notice though MJ you seem to count Fantasia out despite the fact her first album went Platinum and the second went gold and just casting her out. She may not have sold as much as Kelly and Carrie but of course more than Jordin and deserved at least a mention. Just saying but whateves.

I’m just glad for hat season 9 will be for the girls hopefully.

  • ComeBack2Me

Or idol does come in 3′ ¦ and season 9 will be like season 3 and season 6, the non charismatic ones.

Most likely like 3 and 6, I’d say.

Blech. The most boring seasons ever. I’ll definitely have to find something else to watch if that’s the case.

  • abbysee

I wish they would just let the show do it’s thing. I know that it would always skew for the boys because of idol’s viewership being women, but we might surprise you guys….anyway. I just wanna hear the singing, so get on with it.

  • jtoms

hehe…shocker. but this will be good; idol’s primed for another female breakout star. maybe contemporary r&b? wonder if they’ll go for a contemporary r&b male route next season too (hint: jamar).

and i don’t care what anybody says, the jennifer-latoya-fantasia trifecta of S3 was perfection. best trio this show has seen imo, with this year’s early signees a close second.

  • jdanton2

i am a male that watches the show and usually prefer the female singers . Jordin is my favorite winner . season 8 probably had the worst female lineup ever and my favorite was a male Anoop. the last 2 male winners were just blah for me and hope for some good female wins this coming year.

  • girlygirl

I don’t care if a guy or a girl wins. The voters aren’t going to vote for a girl to win simply because a guy has won the last 2 seasons — they will vote for who they want to vote for. Allison had the talent to win AI8, yet she finished 4th. Is there going to be stronger female contestant(s) than Allison this coming season in terms of talent? If so, great — maybe that (one of those) person(s) will indeed win. But if the guys are stronger than the girls, as was the case last season and in AI7, chances are it will be a guy who wins AI9.

  • luvadamlambert

no duh. the only reason I can stand Randy is because he NOTICED the similarity betweeen Edward and adam.I died when I herd that.

  • Valentin432

Watch TPTB pimping the girls next year, really wonder what type they will choose tough.
I think the easiest one to pimp to victory would be a Brooke type (plays an instrument, pretty in a non threatenning way and appealing to a large cross over of people) but without the nerves and maybee a more powerfull voice.

  • gangreen29

Good. People can complain about it being stacked for the girls all they want but the last two seasons were stacked for the guys. At least in season six it felt like Chris or Blake might squeak out a win. I think there are some people who prefer female singers like I do, but I know there will be a huge segment disappointed with the season if they don’t have someone to turn into their male sex symbol. Also, I’m not sure MJ what you meant with your last paragraph. Just because they don’t all post on fan sites doesn’t mean that Carrie and Kelly don’t have a vastly higher number of fans than Adam, Kris, or the Davids. Their concerts always sell very well. They might not have the insane fans that the guys do but I really don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing.

  • wolfsbane813

i don’t think i’ve ever had a guy favorite in all 8 years of idol so far. the only exception has been season 7 and 8 when my favorite girls (carly and alison) ended up getting voted off early and cook and kris took their places as my favorites.

nothing will change this season. i will root for the girls, and i will hope we get another female winner this year!!!

EDIT: and i just want to mention i am a HUGE carrie fan :) i consider her to be my most favorite artist, even outside of idol.

  • Sassycatz

I partially agree. I think if they can get a good looking — because apparently that’s important to shut Simon up — powerhouse female, who can also play a guitar and arrange songs then you’ll have the best of both worlds. A sort of Kelly-Cook combo.

  • Valentin432

I didn’t take that remark as a dig to the girls, and not having crazy fans spamming the internet is more a good thing to me too.

Good. People can complain about it being stacked for the girls all they want but the last two seasons were stacked for the guys.

Agreed. Especially in season 8, the semifinal system favored the guys. Too many average guys got into TOP13 (Kris, Anoop, Scott, Michael). And there was only one girl in the TOP 13 that deserved to win – Allison. Sadly, the guys got all the attention.

Kelly and Carrie’s fans came after their Idol runs, on the heels of successful albums. Carrie had virtually no buzz when she first came off Idol. Many were predicting that Bo would outsell her.

I didn’t take that remark as a dig to the girls

    It wasn’t.

  • hazuki

I just hope that their is a talented and pretty/beautiful girls this season, their were only a select few. Hope a burenette wins.

  • gangreen29

I don’t mean to be argumentative mj but I just don’t think that is true, especially of Carrie. Carrie had tons of fans when she was on the show. She decimated Bo in the finale. The concept of buzz is crap. Media people could not believe that more people would be fans of the country singer than the “cool” rocker, but they were. I think there have probably been many more posts on your website about Cook than Jordin even though I would never say Cook has many more fans than Jordin, and that is because some fans get over invested and have to comment about everything their idol crush does. That doesn’t mean that having those invested fan types means you will have a better career.

  • dreyraglin

Season 3 I know will always be the best season for the girls as like others have said the Jennifer-Fantasia-Latoya trio was the best and it parallel the trio of Kris-Adam-Allison. As a guy I guess I hope this season is more girl centered. As long as they can sing like those 3 did during season 3 I’m cool with it.

  • terps

I think it’s about time Idol produces that singer/dancer female (beyonce, britney, Gaga)

  • jms

While I think that one of the chosen ones will be female this year (remember Lil was one at the begining of last season), I don’t see them stacking the deck. The economy is still down. It’s hard to launch new artists no matter who they are. And most important, they can’t afford to lose viewership of the show. The money brought in on advertising depends the larger viewership which they retain via the guy’s fan bases.

What they need to do is figure out how to change the show to attract more younger viewers. I’ve got lots of ideas for that but it would require major format changes and they aren’t in a position yet where they’re willing to take risks like that. Since they won’t be doing that they need charismatic guys to keep the fan base coming back every week. Either that or they need a female that is former pole dancer and is willing to work it to get the younger guys tuning in. I actually think this is the vibe they were trying to get Alexis to provide when they kept telling her to sex it up. But even with hardly any clothes on, Alexis was more classy than overtly sexy.
If bikini girl hadn’t been a bear of very, very little brain and could really sing, they would’ve been very very happy.

  • Michelle

Please God, let it be a girl this season. Two years of overinvested fandom have run me ragged, lol.

I didn’t take that remark as a dig to the girls, and not having crazy fans spamming the internet is more a good thing to me too.

    and amen.

  • fearbear

Great. It’s about time, not only have there been 2 back to back male winners, there have been 2 back to back all male finales. There needs to be a better representation of female talent in this show. In the real world today, the most prominent solo artists are female.

  • Renina

I don’t necessarily feel like there needs to be a female winner this coming season, but I do feel like it is important that idol produces some strong, powerful female singers AI9. This last season had one (one!) really good female in the top 10 and that was allison. Sorry to LIL and Megan but they were a joke. I just became a fan of idol and I feel like the biggest part of the reason I wasn’t a fan in the past was because it did feel like a joke with all these “pretty guys” with OK voices having housewives pant over them and that was all the show was for me <— Granted this was before I actually began watching and saw that some of the talent was to speak of.

In any case, I think idol could benefit from another break-out female singer. Win or lose I just feel like they need a real female contender. Allison came close, but again she was up against three good looking guys with crazy buzz. I hope idol can make it happen season 9.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

That doesn’t mean that having those invested fan types means you will have a better career.

    I never said that.

Carrie had little buzz in the press after she won compared to some of the male contestants. After her record came out, her career took off. Then, came the buzz.

I would never say Cook has many more fans than Jordin

I would. Cook has sold more albums than Jordin. She’s had several hits, but I’m not convinced she’s got a huge devoted fanbase. Her songs are more popular than she is, imo.

  • SpenserJ

Just because they don’t all post on fan sites doesn’t mean that Carrie and Kelly don’t have a vastly higher number of fans than Adam, Kris, or the Davids.

By the success level of Carrie & Kelly, I’d venture to say that they clearly have more fans. What they lack is an over-abundance of heavily invested, OTT, fantards.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

By the way? We are sooo not going to rehash Season 8 in this thread.

  • Truthiness

Is this like when supposedly Randy said ‘a curly haired girl will win this season,’ like say oh, season 6? I actually don’t know if he said, read he did. Curious about it. Annnd yeah, not surprised that they think it’s time for a girl and will do all they can to try and ensure it.

Will be interesting (for others) to see if they succeed. I doubt I’ll be watching, so I’ll just read about from afar, like I was seasons 4-7.

  • suebrody

Last year Randy predicted boys, and it was boys. But then again, in the Top 13, you had five girls (Jasmine, Megan, Alexis, Lil, and Allison) and eight boys. So odds were that a guy would win, but not that the Top 3 would consist of all guys, or that the Top 5 would be 4 guys, and one Allison.

I agree, jms. Idol is broke, and I’m not at all sure bringing on Ellen is going to fix it. In fact, it may make it worse. Four judges was part of the PROBLEM.

Oh, and as far as younger viewers, my 12-year-old niece was a huge Archie fan last year but didn’t have any interest in watching this year (her mom, my sister, liked Danny and Adam, FWIW). Not sure if it’s relevant, and I thought she might like Allison, but no. No cute under 21 year old boy, so my niece was OUTTA THERE.

But…and this is just me…I was not into Jordin, and was glad Cook and Adam (duh) won this year. Allison was great, and there were others who were good (e.g., Kat McPhee, Carly Smithson), but Syesha, tho talented, bored me (and was in the B3 every week till she made Top 3). So yeah, typically I am more into the guys and I have the feeling I’m not alone in this, tho I’m a big Kelly and Carrie fan. When I think of my iTunes collection, there are very few women in there (Natasha Bedingfield, Duffy, and Adele come to mind. I also have Leona Lewis, but I’m kind of embarrassed about that ;0).

  • oceana

They do these predictions and then they try to stack the deck in certain directions. Last year except for Allison I thought most of the women were very weak contenders. But actually I thought most of the men were too. LOL. Just that the women were even weaker. Last year I only thought that Adam and Allison stood out, and towards the end, Kris.

Anyway, these predictions are annoying but it happens every year. At least it lets us know that the show is coming back soon and will be highlighted more and more in the next two months until January comes.

  • rblaha1234

I don’t care who wins I won’t be watching it.

  • gangreen29

I would. Cook has sold more albums than Jordin. She’s had several hits, but I’m not convinced she’s got a huge devoted fanbase. Her songs are more popular than she is, imo.

I just think Jordin’s fan base skews a whole lot younger and more Urban that Cook’s fans, and her demo is much more likely to buy singles than albums. I work with inner city elementary kids and the girls all loooove jordin. She is one of their favorite artists, and I guarantee none of them know who David Cook is. Their voices are the ones that tend to be missing in the online fan world. Also, are you sure that Cook has outsold Jordin? I know he has in the united states, but I’ve never head of Cook selling outside of the U.S. besides Canada, but Jordin has sold over 500,000 albums outside of the U.S.

  • Duke

So now it’s safe to assume that the S9 winner will definitely be a guy

  • will

I really wish Randy and the other judges would completely refrain from making these pre-season “predictions,” which in addition to being totally lame and meaningless, just feed into the conspiracy theories that the whole thing is rigged.

  • Renina

And just to add one more thing, I see some people are saying that in order to draw in the young teens, that idol may need to produce another Archie type: young, pretty boy. I don’t agree with this because my younger sisters, ages 14-17, actually couldn’t care less about Archie and wouldn’t watch american idol just to hear an Arcie type sing. A couple have boyfreinds anyway so they can really care less. This season, believe it or not, it was Allison who caught their attention. Whenever I would watch it they would enjoy hearing Allison because they thought that the “red-haired girl was really cool” nd though they didn’t vote, they were rooting for her to win it all. Again they could care less about Kris Allen.

So I don’t think that all teens need a cute guy to be interested. someone like Allison who is young, pretty, unique, has a fun personality and a killer voice could do really well. She just needs to inspire the ones like my little sisters to take the time to vote for her.

  • Sassycatz

Okay, because I want to bring this to DCO’s attention, because I’ve heard there’s no reliable way of tracking oveseas sales.

  • jill16

Hmmm, In Lyndsay Parkers interview, Randy told her he wished the girls would come out more. I got the impression that the guys were going to dominate it again this new season.

  • Hazehel

Okay, because I want to bring this to DCO’s attention, because I’ve heard there’s no reliable way of tracking oveseas sales.

That’s right, there is only estimate of international sales, no firm figures. Often you see figures given for international sales and the numbers may be plucked out of some newspaper with no indication if the figures actually come from an authoritive source. See if you can find the reference for Jordin’s international sales.

A website where you might find some numbers is this -
    http://www.worldwidealbums.net/

What it does is just totalling up some known figures and make some estimates, and the figures here may be very different from what’s reported by other people, so take this or any other international figures with a pinch of salt.

The number for Jordin and David from this website -

    Artist/Band Title TOT TOTMAX
Jordin Sparks Jordin Sparks 1392500 1435460
David Cook David Cook 1305000 1305000

Just a note on David Cook’s international sales – there’s been no attempt to promote David Cook internationally apart from the few countries like the Philippines. I think the label want to wait until he has a big hit before they will consider pushing him internationally.

  • PattyH

Obviously he predicts a girl is going to win. I bet anything they’re going to stack the deck in favor of the female singers when it comes to the voting rounds, and TCO will be a girl too.

I was just thinking the same thing. So now we know the will be pimping two girls.

Thanks. I am no numbers person at all, but the people at DCO’s billboard thread are absolutely brutal. No matter their personal preferences, they will not give David Cook an inch (pardon the expression) and will be very hard-hearted, accountant-like in terms of calculating his sales. So, that’s why I posted there. I’ve gotten a response, and am awaiting further word. I think they are good at being very real. (And, I’m not implying anyone else isn’t real here, but Wikipedia is not always the most reliable.)

  • Sherena

What they need to do is figure out how to change the show to attract more younger viewers. I’ve got lots of ideas for that but it would require major format changes

What are your ideas? I’m curious!

    Oh Randy. Whatever.

They need a girl to win this year after 2 straight sausage fests. LOL. The fix is in.

  • cheese

I think our male finalists will include a bunch of teen boys who are too young to trigger obsessions in the 30+ crowd, ugly dudes who can sort of barely sing, one hot guy who sings like a nasally goat, some guy with a heavy accent, and no guys who can play instruments. They need to find guys who are either marginally talented or immune to the idol makeover.

  • suebrody

Let’s play this game: Who will be the two most pimped contestants come Top 24 (or 36 or 13 or whatever the f**k they decide to do this coming year)? Those two are probably in the Top 2. HOWEVER, in the THEY GOT IT WRONG DEPARTMENT:

Kris wasn’t predicted to be (Danny or Lil was)
Cook wasn’t predicted to be (though Archie was)–it was Jason or Michael Johns, as I recall
Blake wasn’t predicted to be (it was one of the other women…they had Melinda and others S6)

So, you can’t *always* tell before Top 10 or maybe even Top 5, right? (It was possible that Allison could sneak in there w/ Adam or Danny or Kris, in that order, I think, at Top 5. I thought it was possible Allison could make Top 3, tho Top 2 wasn’t very likely, IMO)

If I’m really caring, I’ll get back to you next April or May or whatever. Right now, I could care less.

  • CRB

The show is a promotional tool for people that RCA wants to sign prior the “voting” taking place. My opinion it that they know who they want before they audition. I don’t think the top ten touring group is comprised of random cattle call wannabes. The fix is always in on American Idol.

  • mrskiddens

Just reading his programmed words makes me cringe. I know I live in a fantasy world but I just want the best performer to win.

Can we make the judging this year just 20 seconds for Ellen and 40 seconds for Simon? Limit the votes to ten per phone. And no judges save.

Of course that doesn’t eliminate all the finagling before the voting rounds, but it would help.

    Shut up, Randy.

  • Sassycatz

Kris wasn’t predicted to be (Danny or Lil was)
Cook wasn’t predicted to be (though Archie was)’“it was Jason or Michael Johns, as I recall

Jordin was predicted to the “T” by Randy.

It occurs to me that male constestants are harder to predict because of the large female fanbase, plus the instruments. They do a number on people — well, they do on me because I’m old school. (Thank god for instruments expressing true musicality.)

Cook wasn’t predicted. Kris wasn’t predicted. Jordin was way, way predicted. Season 6 was set up for her.

  • smartcookie

Cook wasn’t predicted to be (though Archie was)’“it was Jason or Michael Johns, as I recall

Jason was cannon fodder, the Kris of his season — they didn’t show him at all in the auditions or Hollywood week. Cook got a little bit of footage. More than Jason, at any rate. But, yeah, the general consensus after the audition episodes was that Michael Johns, Carly Smithson and David Archuleta were the ones to beat, and in the top 24, Luke Menard, the guy with the white streak (Jason something?), the one who looked liked Ellen DeGeneres, the one who looked like Leif Garrett, and Jason Castro were cannon fodder.

This season, the groups and the pimp spots made it clear that Danny, Adam and Lil were expected to be there at the end.

If Randy says going in that a girl will win, just like with Jordin and Fantasia, a girl will win. They will stack the deck however they need to, and the likes of Teen Martin, George Huff, John Peter Lewis and that Matt football guy will be the only boys to vote for. Which means everybody will be voting for girls.

i am all for a strong female singer to come out of Idol again. Will be the first time in 2 summers I am not obsessing over autographs and affter party passes, and figuring out how to get the best tickets to Idol concerts. Besides, will prob still be busy with Adam, Cook, and Jason. LOL!

  • Grammie Kari

I don’t care if the winner is a guy or girl. I do care that the TOP 12 be good singers. Michael and Scott could have easily been two talented young ladies. They weakened the line-up, as did Megan and Lil.

So, if they are going for a girl winner, they could look for male contestants who are not as talented as the girls. Will AI go back to the 6/6 split for the TOP 12?

Right now, I am just not as excited for the season to begin as I was in the past.

  • http://www.f3properties.com Animated

Boy or girl – what matters is if he/she has an exceptional and amazing vocal capabilities and an arresting and charismatic performance skills. I do not want to suffer through a round of just okay aspiring stars.

I think there are more successful male music artists than females.Probably have to do with adoring female fans ?
If some truth in it, then women are the makers of amazing men.

Plus, if American Idol wants to continue with its strong revenue they might give some thought to what Newsweek had to say about Women as the new emerging market. So I think it might just be another men duo for the finals next year.

Best kind of fans, I think.

Count me as hoping to break the 3 season curse. The only female winner I liked was Kelly. All the other female contestants who’ve appealed to me were way too edgy for this show, Allison excluded. Maybe they’re finally beginning to understand the advantage of women who are “outside the box.”

I just want someone who is an artist. I’m not a fan of “range.” This show will never turn out the Mariah or Whitney. Make me feel something, and you’ve got me. Male or female.

Jordin was predicted to the ‘T’ by Randy.

It also turned out that Randy knew Jordin and her father quite well before the show. It’s one of those things that makes you go “hmm”, wondering whether his favoritism towards Jordin was just a matter of honest opinion or if there was something more underhanded going on. It’s one of the reasons why I started disliking Randy.

Based on all the peripheal stuff that surrounds idol, including the sponsorship by AT&T, I predict that it will be a girl from America’s heartland that is very straight arrow and generic with a great voice and little personality.

No matter what kind of pimping anyone gets or how the deck is stacked AI has evolved into a reality show that caters to the whims of its audience. No way is a Lady GaGa or Katy Perry Clone making it…I think we are in for a Taylor Swift clone…that seems to be the direction that the AI viewership demographics is headed.

I know I’m projecting here, but all of us have been amazed at how many people with real potential get scuttled by the viewers, especially in the early rounds. It’s pretty damn hard for anyone to succeed if their is bias in the heartland. The major reason that Carly and Michael Johns were thwarted was because they weren’t American kids, and many girls have been given the boot because they were too sexy or not sexy enough, or not pretty enough, or didn’t have the right body shape or weren’t representative of the “All american girl”.

I’ll just watch and enjoy next year and then will hang my star on the person I like regardless of how they finish. Winning Idol is not the Perfect path to stardom as past seasons have proven.

I think it is time for a final two that isn’t two guys. I also would rather see someone who doesn’t play a guitar win Season 9. I am hoping that introducing musical instruments doesn’t mean you have to play a guitar to win from now on.

the pimping begins….man, do these people (judges, producers) ever learn their lesson??? im fearing for the”casting” of the male singers. like someone mentioned, they will make sure the male talent pool is weak so that the girls automatically look better. but then again, they didnt expect Kris Allen to win, so maybe they’ll get screwed again this yr.
