MTV News talked to producer Kevin Rudolf about what it was like to work with Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert in the studio. Rudolf is set to work with Kris Allen in October.

Rudolf had a hit in 2008 with “Let it Rock” and has produced songs for Cobra Starship and Lil’ Wayne.

Rudolf loves him some Allison Iraheta:

“I think Allison is, like, probably one of the most talented singers out in the world right now,” Rudolf gushed. “She’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with. Ever. She’s awesome.”

“I even told the label, ‘I would just, like, quit half of what I’m doing and work just on this

, because she’s so good.’ Such a great voice! I just want to make sure she gets great records and special attention and, you know, the songs and material that she deserves to have.”

“I don’t write bubblegum pop. Even if I write something that’s poppy I always try to do something with integrity and that’s real and has heart. We did a cool record. It has a little bit of a wink to it, but it’s smart. To me, she’s like the new Janis Joplin or Pat Benetar.” No surprise, then, that Rudolf described his collaboration as an “updated 2010 version” of Benetar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

Rudolf worked with Adam Lambert on a “discoish” song for a few hours before the Idols hit the road in July. Now that the tour has wrapped up, they plan to go back into the studio to finish the song.

“He’s so cool, so open. … His voice is incredible. He can do anything he wants. It’s just a matter of choosing the right direction and homing in and saying, ‘This is my sound.’ ”

“We started a song that was … kind of like an updated, futuristic-rock, disco-ish thing…I’m gonna do some more stuff with him.”

Rudolf believes the Idols have more freedom to take risks than your average recording artist:

“[The 'Idol' albums are] so fun to work on, because they have the attention of the world, which means they don’t really have to conform as much as a lot of other artists, format-wise. They don’t have to be cookie-cutter,” Rudolf said. “People will listen [no matter what]. So if you do something that’s great, that blows people away. You’re skipping that step of, ‘Well, we’re not sure if it’s this [genre], we’re not sure if it’s [that genre],’ which a lot of people [in the industry] say. You can do anything you want.”

Anything he wants within a very short window of opportunity. Idol albums are nearly always cookie cutter. The Idols record while they tour, then only have a few short weeks when they get back to LA to finish up the record. It would be awesome if the 2009 Idol releases managed to buck the trend…

Woohoo, go Allison. She does have so much potential. I remember when Adam said she was one of the most talented people he’d ever met and that she had more “raw talent” than anyone he knew. She certainly does.

I love the Pat Benatar reference, I can really see that for Allison. I’m so excited for her future!!

  • alison8701

wow, he was lovin on some Miss Iraheta. She does have an insane voice. It’ll be interesting to hear how they interpret it for the radio. I’m still not completely convinced it won’t be shallow pop, but we’ll see.

  • Squirrely

‘I even told the label, ‘I would just, like, quit half of what I’m doing and work just on this [album], because she’s so good.’ Such a great voice! I just want to make sure she gets great records and special attention and, you know, the songs and material that she deserves to have.’

So weird I was telling my sister on the ride home last night when Pat Benetar – Love is a Battlefield – came on that I can see Allison filling the void she left. I love Pat Benetar. My sister didn’t agree, she is not a fan of Allison’s.

ETA: I have to say that based on the song Kevin has on the radio his music seems more pop than rock to me.

  • jammasta

I can see Allison doing some Pat Benatar style stuff, but I only know Heartbreaker and Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Allison could kill both of those songs, in my opinion.

I like the song Let it Rock, and Allison said Kevin Rudolf was amazing to work with. I love that the feeling was mutual, he loved some Allison.

I still don’t think Allison is my type of musician, but I LOVE my future wife (umm…..) and would go to her concerts and listen to her music. I think she’s so amazing. I put her in the Adam realm where they’re not my type of music (though girl rockers are more my type, so Allison is more my type) so I would probably not buy their albums, but I’d LOVE to go to their concerts. Love it. Dude, concert together man. Add Kris in there too since he’s my #1.

But love love love Allison. Go her!

Love. I had to say it again.

Futurish disco-rock thing? Does this remind anyone else of Adam’s rendition of Let’s Dance? That rendition was electric. Fierce. Amazing. I’d probably buy that single song.

  • Studio57

Ain’t gonna lie, I am not liking the “disco” talk regarding Adam. And Kara penning a song for him made me throw up in my mouth a little.

According to Rudolph’s website he was in the studio with Adam on 9/5

    http://kevinrudolf.com/news_d.aspx?nid=6193

  • mmb

“Disco” is just dance music — I consider Adam’s version of Fame and Let’s Dance to be discoey…Gaga’s Just Dance too..most pop dance music today is not much different from the disco of the 70s

  • gingerly

Ummm I don’t think Kevin Rudolph is all that. His “rock” song that was recently famous was, to me, rather insipid. Yeah, he’s a “big name” but I just can’t find myself caring. I’m so not into the direction I see Adam going and well I’m just scared for Allison. I pray they both prove me wrong.

  • PRMari

I love Pat Benetar. My sister didn’t agree, she is not a fan of Allison’s.

Your sister is clearly deaf :)

Go Alli! He’s gushing all over her voice and her talent. I have been on a Pat Benatar kick for the last two weeks and thinking that I would love to hear Allison do something along the lines of Hit me with your best shot or All fired up…or Heartbreaker, or Love is a battlefield…you get the idea. Pat Benatar rocks and so does Allison.

  • Squirrely

Futurish disco-rock thing? Does this remind anyone else of Adam’s rendition of Let’s Dance? That rendition was electric. Fierce. Amazing. I’d probably buy that single song.

I would LOVE a studio version of that!

  • wand3rful

Kevin might have a slightly distorted view of his work. Both of his two recent hits “Let it Rock” and “Good Girls Gone Bad” are extremely popish. Lil’ Wayne’s cameo is the only thing that adds some grit, funk to Let it Rock. GGGB is standard, bland pop. I would almost expect Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton to sing that song. Everyone that writes pop swears up and down THEIR sound is different, more edgy….riiiiiiiiiiiiight.
He had success collaborating w. Timbaland a few yrs ago, but anyone would considering T is a great producer.

Having said all that, I do hope he is able to create something special for both allison and adam. Just not holding my breath.

  • Natasha

Every time I hear the word “disco” I have this reaction and I just discovered I have the same reaction to “disco-ish”.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

If they give her a song like We Belong, Allison would rock this world.

Her voice is amazing, she’s callow but full of unexplored power. She is like a little ticking bomb waiting to explode onto the music landscape. You can almost hear the Tick Tick Tick.

I can’t wait to hear what they give her. I hope it’s not just empty headed pop.

I can see Allison doing some Pat Benatar

    Me too.

    “Dude, concert together man.”

Hell, yeah. I’d go see them.

  • Studio57

I agree wand3rful- Cobra Starship is so bubblegum to me.

mmb- The only thing that makes me feel better is hearing the Depeche Mode mention in the RS article. I was kind of picturing that as the direction Adam would go in. More so than 70′s music, I think he is going more towards New Wave. Lady Gaga to me is more like that too- She is clearly influenced by Missing Persons, if not a direct rip off.

Having said that, I think that Cassidy dudes song sounds like Depeche Mode, and I’m not a fan of that either. And I know I am in the minority, but Let’s Dance and Fame were my least favorite of Adam’s set.

  • Sherena

He REALLY loves Allison, huh? Hopefully this means he’ll be giving her great songs.

And I agree completely that Allison’s record is going to be a lot more poppy than Kevin implies/thinks it is. Which is a good thing imo, because 1) pop is my favorite genre and 2) it’ll sell better if it leans pop.

  • Susan M.

Sooo exciting!! I sure don’t see that “industry stigma” that we’ve heard so much about regarding AI contestants, as evidenced by Rudolph’s comments. Maybe the level of talent in the past two seasons is really bringing the industry peeps around.

I was singing “Heartbreaker” playing Rock Band with my nephews the other day. It’s an awesome song and definitely not easy to sing. Allison would kill at Pat Benatar niche!!

  • leome

I think with Allison it’s her voice that can give the songs some rock edge. I’m not that familiar with Kevin’s work, what I know I don’t like, but I sure like what he says about Allison. Really great words.
I’m also glad Jive is letting her go to Sweden to record there with Max Martin, another pop producer, but he has done some good things.

And does that mean he’ll be producing at least a Kris song? I think I read here Kris wanted to have only one producer, but we haven’t heard about that yet and if Kevin is going to produce one song maybe it won’t be only one producer.

  • jammasta

I would LOVE a studio version of that!

I would do things I wouldn’t be proud of for a studio version of it, actually :P . You know what else I’d do things for? Studio versions of many of the other songs on tour. Bright Lights, for example (Personally, I like Kris’s solo better than the one in the original. The drums are better, and Kris is awesome :P ).

Also, he’s working with Kris in October? Hmm. Interesting, I think it seems a little late to be doing album work with Kris, so I dunno if it’s album work. What do you guys think? Could it still be album work? I have no idea how these things go.

  • Q3

MJ: Idol albums are nearly always cookie cutter. The Idols record while they tour, then only have a few short weeks when they get back to LA to finish up the record. It would be awesome if the 2009 Idol releases managed to buck the trend’ ¦

MJ I agree although I would call it a proven process that has been used since the 1930′s. I don’t see anything about this year’s Idol record creation process that looks any different than prior years. Collect some songs, demo them, pick the album tracks and single(s), record and release. Every year some mediocre records get produced this way, and a few great ones rise to the top. Usually, the mediocre albums go unnoticed, but with Idol’s instantly famous new artists, nothing goes unnoticed.

In any case, I can’t see any way they Kevin Rudolf would have any insight into how much creative control the Idol’s have.

According to Rudolph’s website he is in the studio with Adam:

    http://kevinrudolf.com/news_d.aspx?nid=6193

I think that it should say “Kevin Rudolf wants to be in the studio with Adam.” It also says he’s working with Adam on Kevin Rudolf’s wiki page. But I can’t find Adam ever mentioning working with Kevin Rudolf. So, perhaps Adam wasn’t very impressed with Kevin. Maybe they will finish this song but I will take what Kevin says about Adam and his album with a grain of salt. He worked with Adam for 5 or 6 hours on an unfinished song in June. My guess is that he doesn’t really know much about Adam’s album.

‘We started a song that was ‘ ¦ kind of like an updated, futuristic-rock, disco-ish thing’ ¦I’m gonna do some more stuff with him.’

Adam has used a whole lot of genres to describe his album including “dance” but I don’t think he has ever, ever used the word DICSO. The last Adam album “collaborator” who used the word “disco” to describe Adam’s album was Kevin Griffin (9/5/09 MTV.com) who it turned out wasn’t working with Adam or with anone else on Adam’s album.

  • Truthiness

I love that he loves Allison. So cool! and given her Tweets and what’s she’s said in interviews about Kevin Rudolph, the feeling is mutual. Hopefully there will be some good work out of it.

And I think Kevin and Adam can make something interesting together. I can see their sounds meshing and maybe making something cool.

Less sure of Kevin and Kris though. hmmm. Not sure how that’s going to work.

  • Ellie2

Anybody posted this yet? Leaked 25 seconds of Kris’s new single. Song starts around the 20 second mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8mDmjLK6jM

  • smokeyvera

Adam said it will be multigenre, and it is conceivable that this guy doesn’t know how to classify Adam’s sound. I would have done some comparisons like he did with Allison for us to interpret the feel of the music. Who knows if it even makes the cut. Adam said there are at least 24 songs and they will use 12.

  • jammasta

As for Kris’s single, Youtube link doesn’t work, but it’s on Rapidshare. I rather like it.

  • Valentin432

Rudolph talked about Adam because Jim asked him to, he just said what he felt was his impression on the album, he also had some goood things to say about him.
It’s pretty clear for me that he was more expansive on Allison simply because they worked longer together.
He only worked 5-6 hours together before the tour began, so it’s no surprise Adam doesn’t talk much about it.

  • Adamme

Futurish disco-rock thing? Does this remind anyone else of Adam’s rendition of Let’s Dance? That rendition was electric. Fierce. Amazing. I’d probably buy that single song.

I have to admit when Adam said that his debut album will have pop, rock element, electric, dancey/discoey songs I was kind ehhh’ ¦ but would love and support him anyway. I love his rendition of Fame & Let’s Dance.. I just have to remind myself that Adam knows what he’s talking about and to trust him. so I am thrilled and really looking forward to hear his single and album now.

  • monte

    YAY Allison,

She was one of my favs (after Danny and Adam) on the show but didn’t care for her much on tour. In fact she moved down a few notches for me after I saw her on tour BUT I haven’t given up because I know she has mad talent and I hope they do her justice on her debut album. If her album is good I will definately buy it.

  • koshka

Yeah Allison! I’ll be the first standing in line to buy your CD.

Re: adam… I think if you replace “disco-ish” with dance-ish instead, it will be right in line with what some of what Adam has been talking about. I can’t make much of what he is saying since he is only seeing a small sliver of the whole album.

Plus gotta remember. AI make radio friendly music…right? Just listen to Kris’s sneak peek. Adam may have some dancey stuff, but he will NEED to include radio friendly cuts or RCA won’t be happy. He needs to be able to sell.

  • saga

Adam has mentioned Kevin in a tweet recently. He was supposed to meet up with him during one off-concert day during the tour (august/september).

  • Niall

At the end of the day when Adam’s cd comes out, I think the bottom line will be “Male Lady GaGa.” I think that’s been the plan all along and all the various descriptions pre-album won’t mean terribly much. And I’m fine with that, it’s the perfect lane for him and I’ll be happy to buy it.

I’ll also be buying Allison’s cd. I think that girl is going to be a major, major star for years to come and she’s only going to get better. Once she’s over 18 and able to set her own direction musically, she’ll really blossom.

  • saga

At the end of the day when Adam’s cd comes out, I think the bottom line will be ‘Male Lady GaGa.’

Maybe, but they’d be stupid if they didn’t showcase his voice and instead used a lot of effects on it like Gaga does.

  • Niall

Maybe, but they’d be stupid if they didn’t showcase his voice and instead used a lot of effects on it like Gaga does.

Well of course they’ll showcase his voice. I’m just predicting in terms of genre and musicality it will be like Lady GaGa. Vocally, I’m sure he’ll get to go all Freddie Mercury on several songs.

  • luvadamlambert

Oh yeah, Allison is heading to Sweden for a week right now

  • PRMari

It sounded like Kevin will be doing some other songs with Allison, right? He seems like a fun guy, Allison is a fun 17 year old girl so that ought to be a good match.

  • Adamme

Someone asked him about this “Male Lady Gaga”, just because he’s working with RedOne. But remember, RedOne himself said that he wants Adam to have his own sound, not someone else’s sound. Even though RedOne also said that the songs that they worked on would have Queen & Bowie’s sounds. So most likely it will not go into GaGa’s direction. However, if it ends up towards GaGa’s sound, electronic etc, Adam’s voice would make it way better. Most likely Adam’s album would go pop/rock instead of Glamrock or 70′s. Howard Benson (producer) said to MTV Glamrock doesn’t sell well.

As far as Allison, love the girl and would definitely buy few of her songs if not the album.

  • Cheetara86

I think so too…he was just gushing over her <3

  • Reflections On Life

I was so excited to read kevin rudolph gush & gush in multiple paragraphs about allison! Glad to see he recognizes raw mad talent and has ideas about what to do with it and how to make it sell.

I just worry that the listening public’s taste is so narrow nowadays… will they accept Allison’s voice and a more-rock style? Pat Benatar was 20-30 yrs ago.. She can’t go more “rock” than Pink/KellyC/Avril else she won’t sell nowadays.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Cobra is bubblegum? With lyrics like “Is that a house arrest bracelet in your pocket or do you got a dick like me?”

    Really?

It just goes to show how different people’s interpretations of a genre is an yet another example of why I loathe sticking a label on a sound. Other than, “I Like” and “I pass.”

  • PRMari

She can’t go more ‘rock’ than Pink/KellyC/Avril else she won’t sell nowadays.

That’s probably what they’ll go for with her but her voice alone is enough to give any song a rock feel so she’s got the edge on Avril and Kelly on that front.

  • Studio57

Starrlight- I have only heard GGGB by CS. What I mean by bubblegum is that it’s a hit that I think will lose it’s flavor fast, not that it’s one of those sticky sweet songs.

I have heard about CS for awhile- they play some college venues around here where they usually have some really good alt rock bands, so when I heard GGGB for the first time I was like, really? They sounded like a manufactured pop band. Not impressed by them at all, but my kids like them.

So i guess I just mean “I pass”.

Adamme- I think Adam’s sound is hard to define. He keeps mentioning Goldfrappe and they definitely have that TRex glam rock dance sound. I think that is really the closest modern comparison to what he really wants, whether he gets it remains to be seen. I hope so because it’s a completely untapped market here.

  • isisdagmar

I remember when Adam said she was one of the most talented people he’d ever met and that she had more ‘raw talent’ than anyone he knew

For pure raw singing talent, I honestly think that Adam and Allison have two of the best voices in the world right now. Which is not something I ever expected to say about people from American Idol. And it’s not about “Oh he has such a high range” or “Oh her voice is so deep for such a young person”–it’s about tone and expressiveness: their voices are so unusual and beautiful and emotive and they can run the gamut from pounding hard rock to completely tender.

I didn’t realize this guy was working with Adam and Kris as well–I know that Allison’s talked about working with him a lot, and he obviously loves her, which is fantastic. And if she has to go more pop than she wants to this time around, she’ll have time to go further to the rock side in the future. And I don’t know what “futuristic rock disco” is going to sound like, and yeah, it’ll probably be more pop than he’s saying (which isn’t automatically a bad thing, there’s a lot of good pop music) and I know that most AI first albums are totally bland, but I think there’s a chance that Adam’s and Allison’s (and Kris’s) albums could genuinely be very good.

  • Sherena

Well of course they’ll showcase his voice. I’m just predicting in terms of genre and musicality it will be like Lady GaGa. Vocally, I’m sure he’ll get to go all Freddie Mercury on several songs.

Ditto that. That’s what I’m guessing for now. Lady Gaga/ Queen, leaning towards the former.

  • BestAI

    Ditto for both points.

The more time goes on, the more I’m thinking Adam is going to be very very electro dance pop with rock-ish elements thrown in here and there. I really am expecting Gaga/Perry meets 3Oh!3 and Cobra Starship. Which is fine, since that stuff sells right now. But I don’t know how his fanbase will react.

ITA on Allison. I think she has tremendous potential, and I could see her lasting a while. She is a hell of a singer, and not just her voice, she has a way of reading and interpreting a song that just seems to come naturally to her and makes her very distinctive. Its just a matter of time until she finds her musical niche, matures a bit.. and then word watch out!

  • tfmal

I will be waiting in the wings to buy both of their albums. They have so much potential and I’m looking forward to their journey. I hope it isn’t too much Lady GaGa, I want both of them to stick to rock as much as possible. I think the idols this year have changed AI forever and I hope next season will be filled with fun, creative and talented contestants.

In interviews, when asked who he has worked with, Adam never mentioned Kevin’s name. Could be he didn’t like the song?

I think that is the case.

And Kevin Rudolf lacks credibility in my book. He sent this tweet on 9/5/09 when the Idols had a concert in Indianapolis that night:

    KEVINRUDOLFnews:
Kevin’s in the studio with American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert working on tracks for Adam’s new album.
12:12 PM Sep 5th from web

    Idol Tour dates:
September 4 Madison, WI Alliant Energy Center
September 5 Indianapolis, IN Conseco Fieldhouse

So Adam is magical and was in the studio with Kevin AND in Indianapolis at the same time?

And in this MTV interview Kevin says this:

…also had positive things to say about runner-up Adam Lambert, even though he only worked with him for “five or six hours” right before the American Idols Live! Tour kicked off in July.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Q3- he could work on Adam tracks even if Adam were not present if they had already recorded stuff. He’s a producer. I’m not saying he was, but I don’t see how that is incongruous. Especially if it was written in 3rd person. LOL.

Nice, nice, compliments for Allison. :-)

  • tiger92

“I’m gonna do some more stuff with him,” the visibly excited producer promised.

This is the WHOLE sentence by Kevin Rudolf. I bet he’s HOPING to do more with Adam. It’s interesting that Adam hasn’t mentioned him. hmmmm…

Yeah for Allison! Love that girl!

I really think its sad that Kevin Rudolf has to lie.I guess only adam can save him.I don’t blame him for wishing that adam will throw him a bone.
    REALLY SAD

  • oceana

I love hearing the gushing over Allison by that producer.

Maybe his last two songs were more pop because of the artists he was working with. It sounds like his work with Allison will be more rock oriented. Fingers crossed.

When did she record it? Who is Brandon Peters?

Kevin Rudolph is right. It’s all about the song. Adam arguably has the best voice this competition has seen ( notice I said arguably), but if the song is crap, the song is crap. Period. See: Sorry 2004, Invisible, etc.

The same could be said for Kris’ new single. The fact that it’s a cover will have no bearing on whether it will be a hit. It will be determined by two things: radio play and likeability.

Like, really, like Kevin Rudolph?! Like wow!

I think Alli was 14 at the time of this song which she co’ed. It was written and cut as a part of the LA School of Pop curriculum to the best of my recollection.

I really think its sad that Kevin Rudolf has to lie.I guess only adam can save him.I don’t blame him for wishing that adam will throw him a bone.
    REALLY SAD

My point was that I don’t think Kevin Rudolf has much insight into Adam’s album or into the 19 album creation process.

He has put out false info about Adam before — on his MySpace page and on Twitter. And, I really, really doubt that Adam is doing “futuristic DISCO”.

And you only need one source to see that the 9/5/09 Kevin Rudolf statements were not true — this MTV.com interview with Kevin Rudolf.
