Platinum Hit – The L Word – Recap & Videos

In this week’s Platinum Hit, the remaining 8 contestants are told to meet Jewel at an undisclosed location. When the crew gets to their destination (a pretty park somewhere that’s never identified) they meet a very special guest–mega-hit songwriter, Ryan Tedder (Halo!  Battlefield! Apologize!)  He’ll be judging the hook challenge, which is to write a chorus for a love song.  The day’s 1st place hook winner will have a “massive advantage when it comes to the team challenge, ” says Jewel.   Everybody gets down to work!

The hooks are better than last week’s craptastic rap hooks.  But, unfortunately not as funny!  The contestants sing for Ryan,   who has no problem doling out constructive criticism.  Jes writes a song about her fake romance with Johnny. Johnny blushes!

The hook winners, as determined by Ryan and Jewel are 3rd place – Jes and her ode to showmance, “It’s You”. Ryan tells her it meandered a bit, that she needs to get to the point quicker. 2nd place is Nick the asshat’s “Stuck In My Head.”   Ryan thought his song was fresh and honest, but needed more content. And the 1st place winner is Sonyae. Ryan and Jewel thought she had an original concept.

The  “massive advantage” is that the 1st place hook winner gets to choose her  team AND the other two teams.  Sonyae does her best to eff up the other two teams. This is how it breaks down eventually:   Sonyae, Scotty and Brian.  Nick, Jackie and Johnny. Jes and Melissa.  Jes isn’t very happy. She can’t write with her boy toy PLUS she’s stuck with the unfocussed Melissa.

The teams get to work. They fight, they bicker. Jes gets sick. Her partner Melissa is useless  Nick still thinks Jackie is a bitch.   Nick’s song turns into a dialog between Nick’s ex and new girlfriend.  Sonyae and her team get along swimmingly.  Jewel gathers the contestants together to reveal that a member of the winning team will be singled out for their contribution and granted immunity in the next challenge–meaning they can’t be eliminated the following week.

The teams present their songs to the judges: Kara DioGuardi,   Keith Naftaly from A&R Jive Records, and guest judge, Ryan Tedder.

Sonyae Scotty and Brian are first to sing  “Love Me To Life” and it’s a little boring.  Johnny, Nick and Jackie are next.  “Stuck in My Head” is catchy, but the multiple points of view in the song are a little confusing.  Jes and Melissa are next with , “It’s You”. It’s pretty, but cliched.

The decision:  Sonyae and Nick are Top 2.  Nick’s song is controversial, however.  Kara hated the conceit of the ex talking to the new girlfriend.  She thought it was unrealistic. The others liked it. The winners are the dream team of Sonyae Nick and Brian.  And the contestant granted immunity is Sonyae.  The Top 2 teams head back to the studio.

Now comes the fun part! The losing team members pointing fingers at each other! Whee.  So much for love songs for Johnny. The judges HATE Jes’s “It’s You”, and are unsparing in their criticism. Superficial. A beautiful performance of a horrible song.  Amateur lyrics. Jes at her worst.  Jes takes responsibility for everything to the point where she claims Melissa did offer to participate.  But Melissa claims didn’t step up because she felt Jes rejected her ideas. Also, Melissa didn’t  want to be mean to a sick person (LAME).  After Kara chastises Melissa for her lack of assertiveness,   Melissa freaks out on Kara “It is really easy to stand up here…please don’t take an attitude.”

And ultimately, Melissa is sent home. Melissa? You missed!  “That’s crazy! It’s not right!” Melissa complains.  Back in the studio, there are fake hugs all around, and Melissa heads out the door.

Did you watch Platinum Hit? What did you think?  The drama between the contestants is sooo contrived, I could watch the hook challenge and then skip straight to the song competition and not feel I missed anything.
