Pink Shades The VMAs, Demi Lovato Fights Back

Another day, another social media brouhaha. This time it involves pop singers Pink and Demi Lovato.

Pink upset some fans on Thursday after sharing strong opinions on her private Instagram account about the MTV Music Video Awards.

“I felt embarrassed and sad,” Pink wrote. “And old. We’re getting old. But in all seriousness; I felt sad because music is supposed to inspire. It saved my life. This trash won’t save any kids life. In a world that is even scarier and with lives still worth saving, who will stand up and have soul? Disenfranchised to say the least. Let down by my industry and peers. Beside Macklemore and Pharrell and Bieber (pre-sob fest) and The Weeknd, Tori Kelly was dope too. The rest was gross and embarrassing and hard for this aging pop star to believe.”

On the night of the VMAs Pink tweeted this. Ouch.

A reminder, that Pink is one of those artists who refuse to lip sync, even when she’s suspended and spinning from the ceiling on a Cirque-Du-Soleil-like silk. Her award show performances never disappoint. She manages to put on a show without resorting to cheap gimmicks. coughmileycoughcough.

Despite Pink’s account not being open to the public, the comments got out (of course they did). Cue the fan freak out! The Demi Lovato fans, in particular, were out in full force to defend their favorite. Demi had performed her current single “Cool for the Summer” on the outdoor stage (and it was kinda pitchy, dawg, but I digress. At least she sang live).

Pink responded to butthurt fans on twitter, saying she wasn’t calling out Demi specifically, but still stood by her criticism of the show.

She RT’d this:

Friday morning she tweeted some more:

And, despite Pink insisting she couldn’t remember Demi performing and wasn’t directing her comments specifically at her, the singer felt the need to respond. That, by the way, made Demi fans extra mad–Pink more or less calling Demi’s performance forgetable.

After retweeting a bunch of messages from fans gushing about how inspiring she is, Demi couldn’t resist getting in a plug:

It’s all good. Whatever gets ya into the news cycle.

The VMAs are meaningless awards, given out by a network that hasn’t been about music for at least the last 20 years. So irrelevant, yet, the past weeks have been filled with highly paid pop stars whining about them. Go figure.
