Pink Covers Adam Lambert's "Whataya Want From Me" - Full Stream

Listen to a full stream of Pink’s take on Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me”. Although Pink co-wrote the tune, she doesn’t change the arrangement much. Really no need–Adam’s original certainly stands on its own. But, I’ll take Pink’s version too.

What do you think? Do You like Pink’s version?

‘Nuf said. I love Pink’s voice.

Yep, I like it. Love Adam’s version more, but I really like having both to listen to. Great song.

  • druzilla

It’s Pink’s “Whataya Want From Me.” Second, it’s Adam who didn’t change the arrangement. Hers is better anyway. Go Pink!

  • Soberba

I like that very much. She sounds great. I think I enjoy Adam’s version more, since I like his voice better. The versions are very similar and I enjoy them both.

  • dhunken

Basically exactly the same song only with Pink singing. Though I really like Pink take on it she was smart to give it to Adam. It suits him better IMHO. His voice is better for the song. But they both emotionally connect with the song amazingly but slightly differently. Anyway Great song whichever of them are singing it, period.

BTW the original was not arranged this way. This arrangement is Max Martin’s (Thanks for the correction Mateja)

  • Tess

I love P!nk so of course I am going to love her singing this song. I big heads up to both Pink and Adam for this hit.

One observation/question. The background voice in Pink’s rendition sure sounds like Adam…wonder if she is using the same backing trak…or maybe Adam used hers and I just think it sounds like Adam.

Who knows, who cares…Pink made money from the song and Adam got some noteriety (and hopefully some money).

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

I guess Max Martin did the arrangement and produced both versions. Nice cover, but Adam sings this song better.

  • erenguest

No matter who sings it, it is an awful song.

How is hers the cover and his the original? He didn’t write it and she did.

I also assume he received a demo when he chose the song for his album. So far from her singing it the way he does, presumably he sang it the way she did.

Are you sure about that? I thought the demo arrangement was different and Max Martin did the arrangement, not Pink.

Well yeah, she wrote it and it’s quite likely that she also recorded it first. However, Adam was the first to release the song, so his version is the original and Pink’s is a cover. It doesn’t matter who wrote the song or who recorded it first. Release date matters.

He probably received Pink’s demo or even this recording. Then he went into studio with Max Martin who also co-wrote the song. So I guess Max Martin produced both versions.

Why is this so important? She helped write it, she gave it to him, he made it a success. I think everyone is happy. You like Pink, others like Adam. I will say there was a demo of the song on the internet it didn’t sound like the final version that Adam sang…..(again Max Martin came up with) . Either way Pink and Max Martin collect the big bucks. Oh and by the way, How soon some forget that Max Martin was a big part of this song. How is anyone not sure he didn’t write most of it.

CindyM you have it correct all of it. :-)

Crystal..is that you? (since this is Crystal’s definition of a cover). Well gosh darn then Adam’s whole album is covers: The darkness, Muse, Weezer, Lady Gaga.

According to the credits on the FYE album liner notes, Adam sang the back-up vocals on WWFM, not Pink.

  • gabilan

How is hers the cover and his the original? He didn’t write it and she did.

Pretty simple, really. In the recorded music industry (and that is what we’re dealing with here), Adam is considered the original recording artist of WWFM. It was an original song (composed by Pink and others) which was first recorded and released by Adam Lambert.

I don’t know why this concept is so difficult to grasp, since it was covered extensively last year when LLWD was released.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Love Pink’s version. Love Adam’s version. For me, it’s a toss up. Both versions are great! The arrangement and instrumentation sounds the same for both versions. Interesting.

  • Cynthia101

The song was written by Pink, Max Martin and Shellback. Although Pink recorded a demo of it, it was never commercially released until Adam put it on his album. Therefore, Pink’s version is a cover. It really isn’t that big of a deal. The demo version sounds different because it was merely a demo of what the song may sound like recorded (ala Take One and Take Two) and was not supposed to be representative of the final product, no matter who released it officially. Max Martin produced the song, so I would guess credit to the arrangement goes to him.

Have you heard Pink’s original demo? Maybe Max Martin created an arrangement for Adam, and then Pink used it for the version on her greatest hits album.

There were demos for Sleepwalker, Fever and Soaked and none of them sound like the arrangements used on FYE. So, it seems likely that WWFM was re-arranged for Adam as well.

It’s only difficult for some peeps when it comes to Adam…

  • mrgrk

Hmm. Loved it, but I am surprised they released it this way. They obviously just dropped her voice in (which is great) and kept everything else the same. I would have been tempted to buy it if it were changed up enough to warrant having both versions.

  • Chicagolaw

Adam’s version is my favorite, but I love Pink, so I was obviously going to love her take on it, too. It is just a really good pop song. I hope Adam gets to write with Max Martin on his next album.

  • sr4mjc

It won’t play for me :(

  • emmuzka

it was never commercially released until Adam put it on his album. Therefore, Pink’s version is a cover.

Hear hear. Pink’s involvement with the song was only as a songwriter before Adam released it. without Adam the song wouldn’t probably have seen the light of the day, ever.

As I see it, it doesn’t matter who’s arrangement was “the original”. It doesn’t matter if the arrangement was changed drastically from the demo to suit Adam, and then Pink used the same arrangement, or if Adam sang the song emulating straight the demo. Demos are demos and first releases are first releases. And after that comes covers.

  • Tess

I would have been tempted to buy it if it were changed up enough to warrant having both versions.

I don’t think Pink’s version will be released for sales (though if I-tunes carries the album you could down load it, so I’ll change this to read “promoted for sales) or radio play ever. She may put it on another greatest hits album (she apparently likes the song and the arrangement). So there won’t ever be a competition between Pink and Adam over who has the best version, etc. This only exists in Idoldom for some strange reason.

It didn’t for me either at first. I had to hit the purple link at the bottom where it says Pink – WWFM.

ETA: Oksana beat me to it.

I like both versions because they’re the same but I’m more familiar with Adam’s version so my ear gravitates to his, but good on both.

  • Marie23

According to Adam (can’t find the interview), when explaining this song, I remember him saying something to the fact that the verses/chorus at the beginning pretty much followed along the same lines as the demo, but was allowed to improvise etc. for the bridge and ending.. But didn’t Pink said that she was doing a cover of Adam’s WWFM? even she called it “My Adam Lambert” song, *shrugs* really no big deal..

Exactly! It shouldn’t be news to anybody how little these big stars often do to get co-writing credit on a song. It’s sometimes something as insignificant as changing a word or two or maybe one note. Not saying Pink didn’t do more than that on WWFM, but we really don’t know.

It’s Pink’s “Whataya Want From Me.” Second, it’s Adam who didn’t change the arrangement. Hers is better anyway. Go Pink!

P!nk co-wrote this song — with Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster.

Both are good but I prefer Adam’s version. I particularly find the vocal backing tracks on the Adam version work better and the emotional pitch at the end of Adam version is more powerful.

Adam said in an interview about this song that he did not have the options of changing the arrangement or lyrics on this song — that Max Martin had him sing it exactly as written. I can’t find it but I’m sure someone else remembers this interview.

This is how Max Martin and many other producers do a lot of their work with Idol alums and other pop singers. Check out some of Kelly Clarkson’s interviews for a blunt description of how Max works.

ETA: CD Universe also sells a lot of imports.

ETA #2: This is turning out to be another online Adam news/search mini-spike! People are apparently listening to both versions to decide which is best. LOL! Will probably sell a few thousand copies of Adam’s WWFM and sell some of P!nk’s GH. Looks like a win-win.

Thanks for that. I didn’t think that Pink had arranged it like this. They are both good, why do we feel the need to say we like one but put down the other to do this. This reminds me of the Kris vs. Adam thing all over again. Just enjoy both or one or the other.

She must have been pleased with the way Adam performed the song.

  • smeggingnuts

Love Pink and pretty good version of WWFM *cheers*

  • LaRue

I really like Pink’s voice. She does a good job with the song. But after hearing her version, I see why she initially passed on it. Pink tends to prefer songs with more depth. I don’t know if that’s the best way to put it, but WWFM lacks the bite that most Pink songs have.

That said, I’ll likely prefer Pink’s version after a few more listens. She has such a cool voice. Adam’s version is fine, but Pink gets my vote.

  • dcglam

it’s Adam who didn’t change the arrangement.

This is a great song written by a terrific artist and made popular by an incredible vocalist.
As far as changing the arrangement…… OMG! Adam has sung this song in so many different ways — the acoustic version, the AI version, the album/radio version……
I feel it is Pink who didn’t change the arrangement. She saw what worked. JMHO

  • dhunken

Here is a thought-Pink putting this on here Best hits album even if its only for Australia could be a way for her to let people know that she is connected to this song and when Grammy’s voting gets down to the nitty Gritty WWFM could get a extra push for votes in certain categories because of it. Q3 mentioned that its on ABC news if enough news sites and or blogs pick up on this (not as a controversy issue either) It may help with Adam getting a nomination having her clout behind it and putting it on her Greatest hits Album solidifies that point. Maybe not but this was just a thought. I hope it is clear what I mean. Not saying without the song being on her album it Adam wouldn’t be nominated but it may give it added help. I am sure this is all just my hope so Adam does get a Grammy nod. I think he deserves one especially for this song.

  • Ellessay

I like both Pink and Adam singing the song. As artists, they each give the lyrics their own interpretation. Perhaps Pink still thinks of the reason she wrote the song when she sings it and brings that emotion to her performance. Obviously, Adam has found his own emotional connection to the lyrics that makes his version personal to him. Both are great artists, and it is an exceptional song.

  • madnessinmotion

I love Pink and her version of WWFM. Of course I love it, it’s the same version Adam sings. IMHO, Pink is paying homage to Adam and what he did with the song by including it on her greatest hits CD. It wouldn’t be there if not for Adam and she is acknowledging that by including it.

Q3, I am with you. I remember an interviewer asked Adam if when someone like Pink gives him a song he gets to offer suggestions of how to sing it or if he just says, “Thank you Pink, I’ll do it.” Adam’s response was than in this case his only option was “Thank you Pink, I’ll do it.”

  • Q3

Love the Grammy concept but the nomination votes were all in before this became news. Adam really has very little chance to even get a nomination this year — although I really think he deserves at least a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocalist. We’ll see. These nominations are not picked by producers (MTV VMAs, AMAs) or by top secret online buzz measurement and fan votes (PCAs, TCA, etc.) — so at least he has a slim chance — which is better than none!

ETA: I agree dhunken that a collab with P!nk would be great — IMO better than Xtina because Adam and P!nk’s voices seem more compatible.

  • iluvai

It annoys me, but Pink sounds great. She sounds fantastic!

Adam is like the boy version and Pink is the girl version.

Pink is rocking it out, and Adam totally rocks it out!

Wow… they both sing it in such a fantastic, and amazingly similar way.

My fave: Adam….. his voice is just gorgeous and haunting.

edit: I still think this is Adam’s song. Yeah… it’s his for sure. And he made it a hit. Can’t forget that!

  • Fullmoon

I love pink and I love Adam. Both Rock. I also like the way dhunken thinks but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Once upon a time the Grammys was about quality but lately they have been leaning more towards sales and popularity when it comes to their noms. Adam also doesn’t appeal to a lot of mainstream America which is OK by me. What makes Adam appealing to me is that he doesn’t, because then he would be like everyone else which would be generic same old, same old. Most of Adams Idols have never won Grammys. Freddie, Led Zep, Bowie(David Bowie never won a Grammy in competition though he did win a Lifetime Achievement Award from them) here’s a list of Top 10 Legends that never won Grammy http://www.toptenz.net/muscians-who-never-won-grammy.php
