Pia Toscano Will Sing “Something Slow” on Dancing With The Stars

Dancing With the Stars pro, Mark Ballas swears he had nothing to do with Pia Toscano’s scheduled appearance on next week’s DWTS results show.

“We’re not allowed to know stuff,” he told reporters backstage after the show, “I can’t get up and go, ‘Can we get John Mayer on the show this Tuesday?’ We have no say whatsoever.”

“I get to dance with Karina [Smirnoff]. Pia is going to sing, which is going to be amazing. She’s a ridiculously amazing vocalist.”

“It’s a first,” Mark says of an Idol castoff appearing before the Idol season ends.

Mark is not permitted to spoil the details about the song or dance routine. but he does reveal that Pia will sing “something slow.” No! Really? Heh. I wonder which ballad from Idol Pia will sing? Hmm…. I think I’ll run a poll after the jump!

Idol and DWTS both tape their shows in the CBS studios in Hollywood. Mark’s star partner, Chelsea Kane, notes, “We hang out backstage, it’s so funny. We’ll be in the elevators, and it’s just the Idols and the dancers.”

Take the poll! After the jump.

Yay! I’m so happy! Keep in mind that a good portion of this audience doesn’t know what Pia even sounds like (AI and DWTS really only share like 5-6 million viewers out of over 20 million), and she will be displaying exactly what she does well. This is such a huge opportunity for her, I wish her the best of luck, she is a true star. I will buy her album when it comes out.

  • Summer

Pia had mentioned that she was going to sing “Somewhere” from West Side story during movie week- maybe she’ll pull that out for DWTS!

LOL. And Karina will be flying on Mark’s shoulder or something during the glory notes. And I like Pia, but to see that some idols got treated better by TPTB compared to others is hard.
But who says that life is fair ?

Does anyone really believe this Pia/Mark relationship is real? lolz. I don’t. No Hough/Hough/Ballas relationship has anything to do with reality.

  • songsungblue

Something slow? Shocker. I thought for sure she’d bust out dancing along to a wild version of “F**k You.” ;)

  • http://airincaol.com coco

I would like to hear an ole Spiritual…..I bet she could do a good How Great Thou Art…or Amazing Grace,,,maybe some Down By the Riverside or Oh Happy Day. I could also go for some I’ll Fly Away or possibly Softly and Gently Jesus is Calling. But the dance number may need more fabric if dancing to one of the above,,,and please no pelvic thrust. I will keep my fingers crossed.

  • Elek

Pia had mentioned that she was going to sing “Somewhere” from West Side story during movie week- maybe she’ll pull that out for DWTS!

That makes sense. Pia can only sing songs she had rehearsed more than a thousand times and I guess she had done that with that song before she got booted off.

If there are no better shows on TV at that time, I’ll probably watch DWTS and possibly check if she has improved and why she is still getting this much attention.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

Beautiful girls get attention just for being that,,,and then she can sing very well and next she will learn how to perform BettaH. I have been a fan of Shania Twain’s since she started and she put off touring for quite a while until she could get some skills to do live concerts and while Pia ain’t no Shania–practice and polishing can only help her and hopefully she can put a good record out. I wish her the best.

  • RockiDreams

Look forward to hearing and seeing her sing. Can’t say the same for the rest remaining on American Idol. Interesting they are all getting to know each other from both shows.

  • chessguy99

Well, there is the two hour Glee that night, and the debut of the Voice. I guess ABC is trying to keep some of its ratings.

  • Nina1

Does anyone really believe this Pia/Mark relationship is real? lolz. I don’t. No Hough/Hough/Ballas relationship has anything to do with reality.

I don’t believe it, either. I can’t even figure out how Idol contestants have time for anything resembling a relationship.

Something is also wrong with DWTS bringing out a booted singing competitor to sing some retread. I don’t watch DWTS, but I thought they dealt A-list.

  • Elek

Considering how she tried to hook up with him, it’s possible. You know how men are, they don’t let opportunities go. LOL.

Understanding that a 2-hour “Glee” and “The Voice” debut will be simultaneously aired, at least DWTS has someone to blame just in case their rating fails. Everyone knows how smart Nigel is… he will laugh in the end of the day and say… I told you so. LOL.

  • jpfan

Considering how she tried to hook up with him, it’s possible. You know how men are, they don’t let opportunities go. LOL.

And you know this because? It’s way more likely that this entire relationship is PR hooey.

  • wfish8888

Ahh!!! Can’t wait. I never watch DWTS. But I’ll watch next week!!!

  • bean99

No, they’re celebs are never A list and their singers are a mixed bag so she’ll fit right in. This will be a first of them highlighting a non-ABC related reality contestant though.

Obviously both DWTS and Idol thinks this is a good thing and I’m happy for Pia.

  • alonzo7

Well, I for one am happy for Pia-I will look forward to seeing her performance here on Mj’s blog-don’t watch DWTS live but thanks to this blog I can see it without all the junk in between the dancing.

  • lucy

Wonder if they’re forcing her to go the ballad route. I’d think that, in this *huge* shot at mainstream, network-tv exposure, she and her handlers would press to let her finally reveal herself as the hot, current chick who can sell a lot of music today — and, thus, medium tempo, at least? Wouldn’t you really really want to be building your brand, at this point? … Cause if her brand is “singer of old-fashioned ballads,” I’m not sure that’s a winner, even as an AC artist, today.

  • damo

Since it is Guilty Pleasures week and we do not know the dance routine, it could be any thing Mark decides on. If it is the Viennese Waltz, my guess is “All In Love Is Fair”. I am not sure what would fit a Tango for a ballad.

  • halo9125

At first, her singing “Somewhere” made perfect sense- but now I’m thinking- since this is the first time a booted Idol is appearing on another show, maybe she is doing something totally different and unexpected. I think. Maybe.

Let me put this question out there- even if TPTB adored Pia and had big plans for her future- would any of this be happening if the outcry over her ouster hadn’t been so huge?

Considering how she tried to hook up with him, it’s possible. You know how men are, they don’t let opportunities go. LOL.

The National Enquirer and The Star both have her in the middle of a love triangle between Stefano and Mark Ballas- should I believe any of that? And I have to tell you- it’s pretty damn weird seeing somebody you know since she’s a little girl staring back at you from the tabloids in the supermarket- considering how completely out of character this is for her.

  • HermeticallySealed

This is the perfect job for Pia if you think about it. Background singers for these types of shows are usually pretty little things with decent voices, but don’t need to have personality or passion. And hey, no worries about shaking things up by being original, she can be the discount Celine she’s always wanted to be.

  • LoveDaRocker

Why not I’ll Stand By You? I think that’s when everyone said “wow, this girl can sang!”
And it has a nice melody. I would love to hear the complete version.

  • Mary102

LOL. At first I thought she was doing a song called “Something Slow” – which sounds about right ;-)

Well, Nigel is certainly cozing up to other outlets to get this year’s people more media exposure. Both DWTS and TMZ seem to have pretty tight relationship with AI all of a sudden. Interestingly enough.

IDK, it still feels so much more contrived this year, very frustrating, tbh.

  • lucy

The National Enquirer and The Star both have her in the middle of a love triangle between Stefano and Mark Ballas- should I believe any of that?

Yeah, well, they probably have Bill Clinton involved in a love triangle between Angela Merkel and Newt Gingrich, too. … Seriously. Pia’s a pretty girl — so I think you’re going to have to get used to seeing her on covers. Pretty girls sell magazines. And you’re probably going to have to see her falsely listed as involved in various love triangles, too. Since pretty girls plus sex scandals sell more magazines. … That’s probably unfortunate, but I can’t imagine it changing! Welcome to the world of big-time entertainment, Pia.

  • Mary102

since this is the first time a booted Idol is appearing on another show,

?? I guess in terms of a lot more viewers, this is different for this year, but otherwise all the booted idols have appeared on other shows and sung and done interviews (Today, Tonight Show, etc.)

  • lucy

Sounds like a good idea. Great lyric and melody for a romantic dance. Not a waltz, though.

  • phil25

I don’t see how this is TPTB treating some contestants better than others. Pia’s on DWTS because DWTS wanted her. It’s not TPTB’s fault that Pia has buzz.

Everyone was waiting last year for Idol to produce a buzzworthy contestant, and now people are upset about it? It makes no sense to me.

  • Nina1

ABC may have had more to do with this cross pimping pollination than Idol, not that Idol would turn down a mutually beneficial opportunity. ABC does this all the time, to the point I avoid many of their shows: They appear not to want to fund basic commercials. GMA, The View, DWTS, in particular, spend an exorbitant amount of their time pumping each other. And if Barbara Walters has a special on, you would best stay away from the network for the week.

These shows are so good at manipulation they should do a presidential campaign. I’ll bet Pia would be in the boardroom if The Apprentice were on ABC.

  • windmills

pj: Does anyone really believe this Pia/Mark relationship is real? lolz. I don’t. No Hough/Hough/Ballas relationship has anything to do with reality.

It’s pretty obvious the media’s turned this into a relationship seeing as Pia and Mark have both denied this is anything more than a friendship. I think the publicity people for their shows obviously see the temporary buzz the possibility of a relationship will create so they’re playing it up. But it’s not like they’re staging photo ops for the paparazzi or having their people leak about how amazingly in love they are yet.

That doesn’t mean they’re not going to take it to the next level of showmance. But I’m just saying I don’t think the individuals involved are guilty of anything other than being friendly and wanting to help each other out. So far. Most of what’s going on right now is the media being all over the idea of 2 pretty people together.

  • lucy

Most of what’s going on right now is the media being all over the idea of 2 pretty people together.

I’d say that’s undeniable, except I’m not sure Mark B is all that pretty. lol. Not to me, anyway. Has a good body, obviously, but otherwise — kinda meh, or even eww, in my opinion…. Or maybe I’m just reacting to my feelings about his personality. Wouldn’t advise Pia to get involved with him for real!

  • mmb

Seems to me that DWTS is trying to lure some idol watchers to the Tuesday result show to better compete with the Voice and Glee. I’m not sure Pia, still a relative unknown, will get them as much bang for the buck as an established recording star, but maybe they were having trouble booking a big name for next week. I dunno. I have no issues with any opportunities pia may get, but something just feels a little weird about a prime time performance spot while the competition is still ongoing. But it’s a new world order. I think that UMG and 19 are gonna throw any and everything that they think might be viable out there and see what sticks

  • LoveDaRocker

Maybe the next step is to have some of the pros of DWTS dance to the music of, say, the top 5?
I think, in general, this cross-pollination is brilliant. These shows are very different. People watching one of them exclusively most likely know about the other, but have decided to stick with the one. I doubt these “events” would have audience of one show jump to the other, but may create a spike for the particular episode. Win-win.

I would think that Nigel coming back to Idol has most to do with the change. After all, he’s seen quite a few of his SYTYCD alums go to DWTS, some for long-term appearances and some for cameos. I’m sure he has some positive feelings about the cross-pollination.

If it keeps her in the spotlight, no doubt her publicist thinks it’s a win-win.

If she’s really getting that record contract, staying in the spotlight is important.

  • halo9125

In hindsight- this whole thing with Mark Ballas seems even more orchestrated than I originally thought: step 1) get eliminated from Idol- check; step 2) set up date with Ballas, make sure TMZ is there- check; step 3) make sure all the tabloids report this crap- check; step 4) BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! Appear on DWTS and sing while Ballas dances- CHECK!

    Sheesh.

  • Trina

I think theres probably a bit of truth to Pia being interested in him and wanting him to have her number, after seeing her ex bf’s pic I believe shes has a “type”. I believe they legitimately went on a couple of dates..BUT I think the media and Pia/Marks’ people are blowing it into something bigger for PR purposes and will milk it for all its worth. If she was still on Idol I doubt a huge deal would be made. But since Pia is now a media darling its huuge and anything to keep her getting PR they’ll use.

  • windmills

Haha! I know nothing about Mark Ballas other than he was in a relationship with Joanna Pacitti who was DQd from AI for knowing Roger from 19/XIX and maybe somebody else.

I try to stay out of the personal life stuff with all these people except the media aspect of it. But I’ve been a fan of people who’ve had to learn about the perils of dating in the public eye especially when you’re dating somebody who’s also in the public eye. Hollywood is truly Hollyweird.

pj: If it keeps her in the spotlight, no doubt her publicist thinks it’s a win-win.

I’d be surprised if Pia already had her own publicist. Right now her PR person is probably the PR person for the show and I think we know whose interest is going to get priority in that situation.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

IIRC, they get assigned publicists from 19 when they get booted. So yes, you’re right. However, any publicity she gets right now is also for the show. It makes even more sense if Interscope is planning to sign her.

I’m not mad at her or really care. Just calling it as I see it.

  • claudette

I’ll still watch the voice, but listen to Pia’s performance here. I can’t imagine that people who plan to watch at least the first performance of The Voice would not watch just to see Pia perform a cover song. (although people just love the gossip of supposed lovers performing together)

The Voice has some huge heavy hitters as judges. I think a lot of people will turn in at least for the first night for curiosity. I’ve never been a fan of Pia, but Jimmy/Pia are playing the game brilliantly and along with her being a media/celebrity darling Idol might just have their first Pop Star and that’s always good for Idol. It doesn’t matter who wins Idol, this year is about Pia as was Adam all about S8.

  • lla2827

Another slow ballad–no way–I find that hard to believe. I think she may do her new single that I am sure is ready or You Light Up My Life for her boyfriend Mark–LOL

I don’t care if she is on DWTS. However, all the other contestants leaving should have that opportunity as well.

  • windmills

Then I don’t think we disagree. All I was trying to say is that so far, Pia’s not actively fanning the rumors to stay in the limelight. It’s being done for her. Whether she’s signed off on that or is happy with it or is tolerating it until she’s in a better position to assert herself or is raising a ruckus behind the scenes telling 19 to quit the leaks is not known.

  • tinawina

If she’s really getting that record contract, staying in the spotlight is important.

Clearly she is. You don’t see them getting Niama or Thia tons of press, do you? They have some serious plans for Pia I’d bet.

  • Mtlfan

yep they definityl have plans for her.
Her ‘stand by me’ was the ballad i liked most from her

  • bmms

    I’m not mad at her

No reason to be! That would be dumb if you were.

Everyone knows how smart Nigel is

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gangreen29

Idol gets some exposure, Pia gets some exposure, DWTS gets some exposure. I don’t think anyone loses in this situation.

  • Needspaintadvice

I’m certain she will sing “Something Boring”. That should work on that show since the median age for viewers is 60. Enjoy your last 5 minutes of fame Pia.

  • johanna

I always watch DWTS performances but I have never being interested in watching any the results shows unless for some of the finales when one of my favorite was in it.

The Voice will be on at the same time than DWTS results show so I will be watching The Voice.

  • n3mover

Dancing With the Stars pro, Mark Ballas swears he had nothing to do with Pia Toscano’s scheduled appearance on next week’s DWTS results show.

Well, of course not! Whoever would think anything like that????

  • OvenMitt

This dalliance between Pia and Ballas is small potatoes compared to the orchestrated relationships between Hollywood A-listers. I mean, Seacrest and Hough? Whatever Kardashian with whichever pro athlete/douchebag? Reese and Jake? Taylor and Jake? *Fill-in-the-beard* and Jake? It’s all to keep the publicity churning. They wouldn’t be bothering to make this news if there weren’t mondo plans for Ms. Pia.

Also, Pia seems to incite some hostile feelings in posters. Not sure exactly to what this can be attributed, just something I’ve noticed recently.

  • Nina1

I think people are just tired of her, especially those who never much noticed her on the show. She is kind of dominating a few entertainment news cycles.

Getting Pia that must exposure could fire back as people will be expecting the next best thing since slice white bread.

Pia album is to better deliver the goods because expectations will be now higher than they probably will be for the winner.

  • Tess

Pia album is to better deliver the goods because expectations will be now higher than they probably will be for the winner.

My sentiments, exactly. With every new article, every new appearance, every new “she should have”….she is being set up. If she delivers, then great…if she doesn’t her fall could wind up being a lot, lot harder than even an undelivering winner since everyone is spouting off to the voters that they missed the boat…and those voters won’t hesitate to get the last laugh.

  • halo9125

Whatever TPTB have in mind for Pia- first, I do agree- this girl has a ton of work to do to live up to all the hype surrounding her- there is probably more pressure on her now than there ever was on Idol. But I will say one thing- for somebody people claimed was “boring”- how is she trending on Yahoo right now?

  • songsungblue

You can be dull and still trend on Yahoo. The hoopla around her is far more interesting than SHE is. Really I see the problem is that all her years of pageantry have washed any edge or quirk right out of her. It was the same way with Diana DeGarmo. So if I say she’s boring, I don’t mean that I think she – Pia – the actual person is boring. I have no idea, I’ve never met her. I mean that she presents such a shiny exterior that her vulnerability and interior isn’t there. She seems vacant. JMHO, and all that.

  • bean99

Some of us actually like Pia and if you do why would there be a backlash? We’re the ones most likely to buy an album and not the people who are tired of hearing about her. I think there’s been a lot of media because she was a shock boot whether someone agrees with it or not. Idol and DWTS are cashing in on it and it’s good for Pia so is a win win. :)
