Pia Toscano Visits the Ellen Degeneres Show

The eliminated contestants from American Idol have not been dropping by to see Ellen Degeneres on her talk show the way they used to since she “relinquished” her job as Idol judge.  But maybe Pia Toscano’s untimely demise got Ellen’s attention.

In her sit down with Ellen, Pia answers the usual questions with her usual tactful and careful answers– giggling when asked about her “date” with Dancing With The Stars pro, Mark Ballas.

After a break, Pia closes the show with her rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “All in Love is Fair”.

All in Love is Fair

This is the first time I ever really loved her voice. She did an excellent job and if that song were on an album, I would buy it. Never thought I would say that.

  • wonderland_bbt

Wow. I have always admired Pia’s technical proficiency but really think that she has really found herself (and her confidence) from the exposure she is getting from being eliminated. Good for her. I hope she stays hungry and really goes after it.

But maybe Pia Toscano’s untimely demise got Ellen’s attention.

Ellen seems to be inviting only contestants she like =P. I remember Colton Berry and someone else who didn’t make the top 24 got invited.

I know Pia had to be singing one of the songs she’d already done but I feel like choosing a song that’s called All Is Fair In Love is noticeable. Her story’s the whole robbed/shock boot and she starts out singing “all is fair”. I don’t know if she thought about that or whether it’s a coincidence or what but it serendipitously fits the way Pia’s handled herself since the boot. There’s been drama in the media but she’s been classy, she’s admitted she has things to work on, she hasn’t complained, and she says things happen for a reason: “all is fair”.

  • tinawina

She sang most of that song in the part of her voice I like the most. THAT is the Pia has potential as a recording artist. Its not the high belty Pia, its the alto, slightly smoky, kinda jazzy phrasing Pia. Good job.

  • rkt

For the first time in many years I didn’t bother watching idol last night. This woman is the only potential star from this season.

@tinawina I disagree. Pia seems more relaxed, but she still doesn’t make the song believable and the emotion just doesn’t come through. It is only because of her high belting notes that she is getting all the attention. To my ears, her lower voice is not beautiful or exciting, and is not very strong, which is why she will always only be a good singer, and never a great singer. She’s going to go for those high belting notes every time because that’s where her power is and where she shines and stands out from other singers. But doing that in every song makes her too predictable (and some people say, boring, but I don’t agree with that). I wish her well and hope she gets a great song for her first single where she can use her high notes. She’ll need both.

  • claudette

She’s doing better post Idol without the stress. Carrie also did much better and I think it’s her post Idol growth that made her what she is.

I also hope, and think, that Lauren too will be able to show her spunk and that “something else” after Idol because at this point I think she has the most potential post Idol. Pia is still pageant queen to me and she seems so dated. And old. But, Carrie surprised me, and Pia has a lot of Hollywood support so maybe. Still, it’s her looks that has gotten her to this point and why she’s so popular now. (she’s talented, but without her looks she wouldn’t have caused THIS much attention. She’s still a robot)

  • HR

Pia is one of only 3 this year I think are viable post Idol with the right support and material. Her looks are only a part of that package.

I don’t see the point in watching the show the rest of the season if it’s going to follow it’s predictable voting conclusions of the last few seasons so right now I’m interested only in what she, Scotty and Lauren might be doing post show production. My hope is that rumor about her creating a CD full of ballads was just 19′s television oriented branch trying to slow momentum to keep focus on the show and not actually true.

  • samgamgee

There’s just something wrong with the way she interprets songs. It’s like there’s a disconnect between her and the music. It pales in comparison to the heart-wrenching interpretation of Dione Warwick. Maybe she just lacks real life experiences that would allow her to feel deeply when singing.

  • ny64

I had to laugh when Ellen mentioned “the people” who criticized her for not having personality when she was actually one of them herself as you can see here at 0:30 ….

@samgamgee Her lower voice is too weak and uneven to be very expressive. It sounds like she’s just going through the motions in the early part of the song so she can get to the high notes at the end, where she can really deliver it. I didn’t know Dionne Warwick had recorded this song. Before she ruined her voice (with what I can only guess was alcohol and smoking), Dionne was fantastic. I’ll have to check that out. Perhaps if Pia had more vocal training, her lower notes would become stronger and she could become more confident and more expressive.

I agree completely. Pia has a resonance in her voice at the Alto/Mezza level that is very distinctive and pretty! Jimmy and you folks at Interscope. . . .take note when you produce her album (after Idol Tour).

Pia is classy for sure. She is also smart. She knows she is still under AI contract and these are AI promotional appearances not her own. By keeping her mouth shut and staying positive, that is the pathway to post-Idol support. I presume she has been told this by Nigel Lythgoe.

I wasn’t talking about notes and range and all that shiz. What’s important to me is the feeling behind it, whether the artist can draw you into her world as she sings. That’s real music to me.

  • cowboysfan

What the hell? Pia’s lower register is ridiculously powerful.

  • monleo1705

SIGH… I miss Pia on the show. And I love this song that she sings. It’s funny, i’m usually a male singer supporter (yes, guilty as charged) and my faves this season was James and Pia. But now with Pia gone, I can’t even find myself rooting for James anymore.

Although i think that boy has no problem going on without me. I have a tingling feeling he’s going to take it all.

  • Reflections On Life

Count me in the Lower Register team, lol. When she belts she no longer sounds good. Very few ppl can belt, and of those, very few actually sound good (mellifluous, pleasing) when doing it. When Pia belts, my speakers reverb, and I have to turn down the volume. Her lower register is smoky/sultry and rich, and she seems to do most of her phrasing in it. When belting, she drops all pretense of phrasing.

  • tinawina

This. You said it better than I did.

    Like she does here.

    YMMV to everyone, of course.

  • songsungblue

I think she was born to be a back up singer. And I agree, her higher register borders on the unpleasant.

  • rkt

It’s interesting that she didn’t do a lot of high notes in her pre idol stuff. Maybe the idol coaches talked her into doing them on idol so that she can have that wow factor in her performances. It worked in the beginning but it got predictable later on.

Anyway I like her high register And I love her voice in studio. She should do the high notes in the end of her songs, like what Mariah usually does.

  • Fullmoon

Pia sounds fantastic. She seems less stress and feeling her songs. There is a lot of potential and star quality in that girl. She was my favorite and I feel she’ll be the only one anyone will be talking about after s10 Idol is done. Can’t wait for her album.

  • cowboysfan

The other contestants were born to be backup singers for Pia. Judging from last night, I think only one or two of them could get the job. :)

  • MrDuffin

It sounds like she’s just going through the motions in the early part of the song so she can get to the high notes at the end,

    Just like Jennifer Hudson…

  • wfish8888

    I’ll buy her album!

  • RockiDreams

Love her, missed her last night that is for sure.

  • poohbear

It’s really sad that some people tear down Pia in any way they can. Pia is gorgeous and Pia can sing like an angel, but that’s not good enough for them. They will always find something wrong with a beautiful woman with talent. “She’s boring, she has no personality, her lower register is weak, all she sings is ballads, she deserved to go, her music is cheesy, she would have never won anyway.” Watch out–the fire-breathing green dragon is out in full force.

Pia should have won. She’s clearly the most talented of any of this group.

LOL! I really have to comment. Dude, no one is ‘jealous.’ Personally, I don’t even find her that attractive. We just…didn’t like her singing that much. It’s possible. It happens. :)
