Pia Toscano sang her single, “This Time” on Good Day New York this morning.  After her performance, she revealed in a short interview that she’s finished 9 songs for her debut album that will likely be released in November.

Pia is in the New York City area playing her hometown shows with the rest of the American Idol Top 11–their second concert at the Nassau Coliseum is tonight in Uniondale New York.

So, how’s Pia’s single doing sales wise? Anybody hear it on the radio yet?

  • girlygirl

Her album is going to get buried if they release it in November. October would be better — fewer big releases to compete with. Or push it back to 2012 and release a 2nd single — which might be the best option, especially since This Time isn’t really doing much.

  • TylerWV

    I like Pias song.

  • lili_anne7

If they were releasing her album in November, than what was the point of releasing This Time? I guess they just wanted to increase her exposure. Pia really has potential, and her stage presence has improved, she just needs a better song. She’s going to have stiff competition in November, but on the other hand more people buy albums during that period.

  • LoveDaRocker

She seemed a little more open with these hosts than in other interviews. Maybe because she knew them a bit before.
I like the outfit. Its a fact that t-shirt and jeans is one of the most attractive looks for women.

  • nate2582

It would have been nice to hear a live band back her up. This performance looks and sounds so karaoke.

I saw Pia on tour live a little while ago, and OMG, she did NOT impress me at all. Great voice and look, but just soo boring and forgetable. No stage presence or connecting to the song, or sense of joy singing. Lauren and Haley were way better in that respect.

I just srsly don’t know how they’re planning to market her, except as a Leona Lewis ballad type singer, and that isn’t exactly burning up the charts these days.

I’m kind of curious about this too. Anybody?

To me it looks like Trying To Make Pia Happen, Part 752546. She has been singing the song for the whole summer now, on live tour, radio (well… According to Idol chatter, less then a hundred spins last week) and tv. But where is the buzz? She needs another single, a hit song, or otherwise she isn’t happening.

I think to capitalize on Idol buzz, you pretty much need to release something immediately after elimination…which granted is very tough to do. I wonder if Jimmy would ever consider having the Top 12 or whatever record a song while they are on the show – and if he thinks there is potential in a contestant, release a single right after elimination. This could especially be useful since the contestant normally does a press tour after being eliminated. Imagine if James could have gone on Leno singing a new original song that he could promote?
They would need to work out contractual details, of course – may be too complex overall. But it could just work.

But for Pia, Haley, and James – they are going to pretty much rebuild a fanbase from scratch. Those people crying at home when Pia was eliminated aren’t calling in to demand Z-100 play Pia’s song. She’s yesterday’s news now to them.
They are ALL going to need good music..that’s the bottom line in all of this. And do something that completes breaks them away from the “Idol bubble”.

Well, IIRC it’s about 390-something on itunes, and never really got very high except maybe right after SYTYCD. It is not very high on airplay either – like in the 60s or 70s on the CHR airplay chart.

  • Haleysshindig

Most relaxed I’ve seen her in an interview or singing the song but I think she needs to promote a song she is actually into. Its pretty obvious she is not connecting to “This Time”, give her a song she loves and she’ll do much better.

This came up right after Pia was eliminated, and when it looked possible that she could release a single in the middle of the AI season, it was actually very controversial, with a lot of people, including myself, not thinking it was very fair for someone finishing 9th to release material mid-season when the winner and runner up were still on the show and couldn’t do ANY press.

I have a feeling this is at least part of the reason they don’t do that, and might never do it. It would suddenly make someone WANT to get kicked off the show to get a headstart on everyone else. Many people who have a deal after getting eliminated from idol already know about it beforehand because those talks have already started taking place.

I’m not much of a pop fan, so I’m not in Pia’s market…but one thing that has struck me is that Scotty (and James to a lesser extent) are the only ones with functioning Facebook pages. Wait–I haven’t checked Paul and he did tweet for people to go to his Facebook page. Most have active twitter pages, but Haley. Seems like they should be doing as much of these things now so that people would follow them after the tour?

But, then again, maybe it all still boils down to radio play with a little bit of internet buzz thrown in…

This morning prior to her tv performance the song was in the 390′s on iTunes. The highest I have seen it on the mediabase pop chart was #67. Unfortunately, no one on the Pulse board seems to have consistent access to the mediabase charts for songs below #50 so we don’t get daily updates. The last update they have posted on Pulse Board was from MONDAY. It was #78 on that chart:

    The interview was really cute!

I think that Pia seems sweet and I’d like for her to succeed.

That said, I feel ZERO connection between her and her songs when she sings.

Rather than feeling the song, I think she’s concerned about hitting the high notes and moving her pageant left arm at just the right time.

So I, in turn, have ZERO connection to Pia.

  • hoa_teca

Pia has a good voice, there’s no doubt about that.

She is performing the song in the same way, weeks after weeks, however. We all know she can hit the right note and that she can sound live like on the CD.

To make the song her own, in addition to being more relaxed onstage, she should not just keep singing it like that. Bend some note, make it sound more real live. When I go to a concert, I don’t expect artists to sound like CD. I want to see how they interact with the audience, how they sound differently from the record while keeping the emotion intact.

Many artists even sounds live better than their recording – they don’t follow the standard arrangement. Sometime they prolong a note or just put extra emotion in certain words. It works.

I see your point about not changing it up, but she is singing to a backing track, which does her no favors. I am sure she could still switch it up, but she’s probably nervous because there’s no live band to improvise if she gets creative.

That being said, I think she’s trying too hard with her facial expressions. Girl is going to have frown lines the size of the Jersey Shore if she keeps it up.

How embarrassing for the hostess to act like she thought it was a full CD when it is only a single.

Pia seems nice enough; I just don’t feel it. Good luck to her.
