Pia Toscano’s new single “This Time” debuts on AOL and for the first time, you can listen to it without a watermark. In the accompanying interview, Pia talks about her Idol journey, recording her first album, and debuting her 1st single live on the American Idols Live tour.  Read more at AOL.com

You debuted your new single ‘This Time’ on the tour. What was the reaction, and how did it feel to be up there doing your own song?

It was the most incredible, almost intimidating moment of the show for me, because the audience wasn’t familiar with the song so I wasn’t sure how it would be received. The reaction after I concluded the song was awesome! People really responded and could truly relate to it. That was a feeling I will never forget!

We have to ask, how’s your love life these days? Are you dating Mark Ballas from ‘Dancing with the Stars?’

Because my life is so public now and out in the open, there are certain things that I would like to keep private and to myself. However, I will say that Mark is a wonderful person who I look up to and respect as an artist as well as choreographer and is someone I turn to for another musical opinion.

What’s the next step for Pia Toscano?

I’ll continue touring until mid September, and then finish recording and release my album sometime during the fall. I am so excited for what is to come and I’m truly so thankful to my fans who have been supporting me throughout this journey!

Well, for her sake – I hope that ‘something’ is a restraining order ;)

What I do know: she didn’t pick him.

I thought the story was she asked James/James wrestler friend to get her an introduction. How is that not picking him?

That story is a big ole’ crock of hooey.

If you’re going to fauxmance it up, at least pick someone a little more buzzy and less sleazy than Ballas!

But if you are buzzy and non-sleazy, why would you fauxmance? Maybe they tried Maks first and he gave them the finger.

The single seems to be available for download on Amazon. Preview works fine, I am at work so I don’t know if it will let you download. But I see no promotion on amazon.

Didn’t Maks do a bachelor in the Ukraine? Ooooh… maybe they should make Pia the next bachelorette! Busy pop star too busy to date…

Do being in that show (wherever it is) makes you sleazy? My impression is that he is not a seazy type (by entertainment world standards at least).
As to Pia in the bachelorette, I have never watched a full episode of the show (or the bachelor), but I gather that the success of a season lies primarily on the personality of the subject, and Pia seems too bland to anchor a show like that. On the other hand, maybe a show like this gives her enough time to show her true self (for better or for worst).
Besides, pop music is all about buzz. Maybe being in a reality show while recording her album is the buzz she needs to be successful (see Ashley Simpson).

Large swaths of the audience booing or refusing to applaud while the rest just sit there? Never happens (although I did not attend the S9 concert).

hee hee. Well, I was at the concert last year and can safely report there were no boos. Though there some yawns, especially at the beginning. It wasn’t until the final three that the audience actually woke up (well, maybe a mild hello for Siobhan).

I’ve watched many of the vids from this years tour – there’s been a much bigger attempt to make it a “show” instead of just mini-concerts from loser to winner. I like this setup better.

It’s an Idol concert. You have to grade on a curve.

Entire Audience on their feet screaming enough to cause aural damage? Excellent Response

Many people standing in the audience and lots of whooping and dancing? Very Good Response

Front N rows standing during your performance? Good Response

At least the first row standing up? OK response.

People sitting down throughout your performance and clapping at the end? Tepid response

Kirsten, while I bow to your Idol concert expertise, whether the audience sits or stands is not a black-or-white thing, as in: audience standing – good, audience sitting – bad. The reasons people get on their feet, whoop, or dance has a lot to do with the type of music being performed, and sometimes the type of performer they’re watching, but it’s not necessarily a sign of approval, nor is sitting or being quiet a sign of disapproval. Now, for Pia, these things may be true, I don’t know. I wasn’t there. But I don’t really agree with the generalization, I guess. No offense.

Download works fine, once you figure it out – I think I bought the song twice, lol. But Amazon ain’t iTunes, that’s for damn sure.

All I can say is Halo9125 – thank you for the FACTS that you are aware of. I enjoy reading them. My impression of Pia from day one has been she is a classy young woman and I for one hope she has all the success in the world. I like the song – who knows what sells these days anyway. Absolutely no one. I remember some obscure song that was played during SYTYCD and it became a huge hit. I completely forget the name of the song since I wasn’t a fan of it but it just shows you never know what will click.

It will be helpful (to me) if a photog catches Pia when the tour rolls by Florida and they take a break on the beach. Just saying.

    At least a couple years.

since when are singles available to download off Amazon?

I remember seeing singles on Amazon within the past couple years, but the real news is Amazon’s recent move to reduce the price of top-selling singles to 69 cents. Yup, another effort to grab market share from iTunes. (Rolling Stone article)

I attended the show last night and I enjoyed Pia’s performance of the song more than the recording. To me she gave it more life and excitement. I would have to say the the reaction to Pia in general was less than most of the other girls, especially compared to Lauren and Haley– who have now or likely soon will also have recording contracts. I’ve said this before, but if they want to give her a better crowd reaction, and that would certainly be more fun for her, then she needs to start off with “I’ll Stand By You.” Assuming she hits and sustains the glory note the way we know she can, then crowd WILL give her a much better response– and the show is off to a slamming start. Later, when she sings her single, the crowd will be more into it.

It’s been more than a couple of years. Not only do they have several hundred singles that are available for 69 cents, they also have a lot of well known singles that are free. They are currently selling Pia’s song for 99 cents.

  • Indigobunting

Well, boo; I bought Dannys Second Hand Heart for $1.29 at Amazon. Not that 30 cents will break me

bsolutely no one. I remember some obscure song that was played during SYTYCD and it became a huge hit. I completely forget the name of the song since I wasn’t a fan of it but it just shows you never know what will click.

You are correct – nobody has any idea what will actually happen; we can only speculate on what we think will happen.
I am not optimistic personally – and I am one who is rooting hard for it to succeed.
“Jar of Hearts” (assuming this is the song you are referring to) is a song that is very unique coming from a girl with an interesting, distinctive voice. On top of that, she got a recorded version of the song to play during one of the higher rated summer TV programs. Pia didn’t have any of that working for her. Also, there is the “mystery” factor in that not a soul knew who Christina was – and I bet many people instantly looked it up online right after the show, or even during it. I just think the circumstances are different…and that her song was more “modern” than Pia’s. (Nevermind the fact that she wrote it herself – and I think that does help an artist when they have at least SOME input in what they are singing)
But we’ll see what happens. This is new territory for Idol to try something like this; it can go a long way in determining how they promote future “non-winners”….perhaps as early as later this year with Haley/James if they finally do sign at some point!

  • Elliegrll

Pia has a couple of things going for her. First, she’s with Interscope, and they have a solid reputation for promoting their artists both in the media and with radio stations. And most importantly, Jimmy Iovine seems to think that she is very marketable, so he is going to actively push her. This isn’t the situation that some idols have found themselves in, where the label clearly doesn’t want them, and only signed them because they were contractually obligated to do so. Maybe Jimmy isn’t totally interested in artist development, but he has shown that he’s committed to promoting Pia, and that’s something that not all of the alums have gotten.

Unfortunately, I think they blew it, and big time, by not releasing it yesterday when there was some buzz. If it can get some airplay maybe there’s a chance- now- I’m not so sure.

Are you suggesting Pia gets another solo?

  • songsungblue

I’ll Stand By You is quickly becoming known as the only song she can actually sing with any emotion [although complete with pageant arm]. I’m not sure there’s a lot of mileage in beating that sonic horse into the ground.

  • jsrj98

No. I was suggesting that she sing ISBY instead of the Alicia Keys tune.

Well, I observed first-hand a tepid response (compared to other girls) to her 1st song. I guess the question is what’s the value in continuing to sing it?
