Pia Toscano - This Time - AOL Song Stream and Interview

Pia Toscano’s new single “This Time” debuts on AOL and for the first time, you can listen to it without a watermark. In the accompanying interview, Pia talks about her Idol journey, recording her first album, and debuting her 1st single live on the American Idols Live tour.  Read more at AOL.com

You debuted your new single ‘This Time’ on the tour. What was the reaction, and how did it feel to be up there doing your own song?

It was the most incredible, almost intimidating moment of the show for me, because the audience wasn’t familiar with the song so I wasn’t sure how it would be received. The reaction after I concluded the song was awesome! People really responded and could truly relate to it. That was a feeling I will never forget!

We have to ask, how’s your love life these days? Are you dating Mark Ballas from ‘Dancing with the Stars?’

Because my life is so public now and out in the open, there are certain things that I would like to keep private and to myself. However, I will say that Mark is a wonderful person who I look up to and respect as an artist as well as choreographer and is someone I turn to for another musical opinion.

What’s the next step for Pia Toscano?

I’ll continue touring until mid September, and then finish recording and release my album sometime during the fall. I am so excited for what is to come and I’m truly so thankful to my fans who have been supporting me throughout this journey!

I don’t know why I sucker myself into reading Pia interviews and listening to her again…The result is always the same. I find her interviews bland and her song shrill.

Er…the response is that great? While it’s not a bad song and Pia does what she can with the song, how come the response I see so far is not as she imagines?

Anyway, good luck with her debut single. Interscope must have supported her a lot.

  • halo9125

Dumb question- is this the “official” audio? I see it’s courtesy of Vevo- does this throw the “they’re remixing it” theory out the window?

Somebody somewhere hit the nail on the head – TPTB didn’t want this released the same day as Demi Lovato’s song, so they pushed it back. Even I know that this couldn’t compete with Demi’s back story.

Edit: Just saw an interesting comment on iTunes re: Demi’s song. Apparently its original release date was supposed to be the 19th? (same as the original release date for “This Time”? And a quick google search turns up a release date of the 14th. Wonder if there is a correlation between all of this.

I don’t know how to block quote when I edit- and I’ve heard lots of comments that “This Time” is poorly received at concerts- and while I don’t think people are going wild for it, I listen to the audience response at the end of the videos that have been posted, and it seems quite good.

She’s going to tell AOL that everyone hates it on tour when she’s trying to sell it?

Anyway, I like the song a lot, I find the verses to be really beautiful, especially the opening, and the chorus is very catchy.

  • cheese

I finally listened to the song. It sounds like filler from a Jordin Sparks album, as sung through Pia’s nose, with the addition of some weird enunciation. She has a great voice, but this doesn’t really show it off, imo.

  • Kirsten

The reaction after I concluded the song was awesome!

I wonder what adjective she would use to describe the reaction to “DJ Got Us Falling In Love”, “Animal” or anything any of the top 6 does. If “awesome” describes the crowd reaction to “This Time”, then “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” is probably insufficient.

Of course, she’s got to try to sell the song. So, go with it, Pia!

  • car3278sweet

Well, first time listening. I like it. Maybe because I relate to the story, but I also think Pia’s voice is very emotional and beautiful.

I do think this is miles above either Scotty’s cheesy ILYTB or Lauren’s slow LMMD as a first introduction to the radio. I have no idea if it will fly, but Pia’s got a good shot with Jimmy and Interscope behind her and a summer filled with full concert halls listening to this tune.

I am asking myself the same question. I keep hoping the song has changed but its still the same boring song as yesterday. I really liked her voice when she was doing the pop songs before the live rounds, just not hearing it now. Anyway Good luck Pia.

  • hoa_teca

While she is promoting her song, sure she will say nice things about it and I understand.

What I meant in the first post is the overall response I see so far about the song is not that good.

I listened to a part of her recorded song called “What do I do” on youtube and I like it way much than “This Time”. “What do I do” is more emotional and suits her voice more than this uptempo song.

But well, good luck to her with “This time.”

  • Tess

I listen to the audience response at the end of the videos that have been posted, and it seems quite good.

I think some of us remember the “blow the roof off of the place” responses that other idolettes have had on their respective idol tours and we may have a preconceived notion about what is a good response for an idolette or a song.

I think that Pia is probably getting a nice response to her song. Idol audiences have shown, as far as I have seen, a nice respect for all the idols and are pretty consistent in their applause and appreciation for the efforts.

  • julesb2183

I love this song and her voice – I am glad that they are giving her a chance and a record deal!

It’s an Idol concert. You have to grade on a curve.

Entire Audience on their feet screaming enough to cause aural damage? Excellent Response

Many people standing in the audience and lots of whooping and dancing? Very Good Response

Front N rows standing during your performance? Good Response

At least the first row standing up? OK response.

People sitting down throughout your performance and clapping at the end? Tepid response

Large swaths of the audience booing or refusing to applaud while the rest just sit there? Never happens (although I did not attend the S9 concert).

  • halo9125

LOL good thing you told me- this is the first year I’m going (note to self: stop watching videos. will be sick of the entire thing by August 23rd)

Large swaths of the audience booing or refusing to applaud while the rest just sit there? Never happens (although I did not attend the S9 concert).

There was a S9? I thought they went directly from 8 to 10, lol.

  • adolf_hipster

It’s an Idol concert. You have to grade on a curve.

well then u should also take into consideration that the audience is hardcore idolbert audience, who is likely to support louder:

    a) those who ended up higher in the competition (even tho it ended couple moths ago and the placement on the reality show doesn’t matter as much as idolberts think in the real world)

    b) male contestants

So maybe taking everything into account Pia feels that since she’s singing in the first half and didn’t last in the competition as long as Haley or Lauren and the boys are getting better response from the audience in general, the reaction to her single is great?

Maybe she’s not calculating whore ready to do anything for fame or money afterall ;)

  • tomk

First off, no artist is going to say “The audience hates the song so much – but I love to sing it, Jimmy tells me it is good, and I want to get into the iTunes Top 100 as soon as possible!” Nobody can fault her for saying her song is getting an amazing reaction. She may also be referring to Twitter response that is directed at @PToscanoAI10, which of course will be mostly positive feedback from her most ardent fans.
I’ve listened to the song enough to draw a final conclusion: It’s not bad. It’s not good. It is just kinda there…some of the comments on AOL.com actually get on her case for “going country”, which is just so bizarre. Pia and Country?
As some have said, it is good enough to be album filler.
But released songs take a life of their own – we have no idea how this will be received if the public gets to hear it on their local radio station. It has a catchy chorus I guess – but is it catchy enough to force the teens and 20-somethings to call/e-mail/tweet the station to keep playing it? Well, that is the question that we hopefully will get an answer to soon enough.

  • ny64

Should be mentioned that one of the live performance videos of this song is now trending on Youtube and has over 115,000 views, although it does have a high percentage of dislikes and very few comments.

  • TwigLA

Jimmy really helped mold some of us from singers to artists.

I have a hard time looking at Pia as an artist. She’s certainly a singer. But to be an artist, there needs to be originality and creativity on her part and I just don’t see it.

I like the musical intro to this song. Then it seems to go all over the place. I found myself singing lyrics from other songs in parts of it. Most noticeably, ‘like a tatoo’. It also sounds very country in parts.

    It’s ok.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

It’s not bad. It’s not good. It is just kinda there

That kind of sums up how I feel about Pia. Good luck to her.

    @halo9125

LOL good thing you told me- this is the first year I’m going (note to self: stop watching videos. will be sick of the entire thing by August 23rd)

It changes things a bit if you’ve spent all summer watching the vids, but trust me, seeing it live is a great experience no matter what….maybe even for s9 :P I’ve only been once and I went pretty much entirely to see Adam but I ended up really enjoying just about everyone. All of the Idols are more relaxed come tour, they’ve had longer than 5 seconds to practice and they all sound great. I remember Michael Sarver opening the show and thinking “He finished 10th?” Megan was great. Matty, who I thought never really quite got there on screen totally and completely blew my socks off with Georgia. And when it came time to see my favorite? There’s nothing like standing in an arena of people going completely and totally nuts.

Trust me, you’re in for a cheesy good treat. Just like nachos, you wouldn’t want them every day but man it’s fun to indulge.

  • JudyOhio

What I don’t like about the song is that she/they chose to use bad grammar in the opening lines……

    “My bags is packed…..”
“I don’t know who I am no more”

Really, I doubt Pia speaks this way, so why sing this way?

  • Kirsten

well then u should also take into consideration that the audience is hardcore idolbert audience, who is likely to support louder:

    a) those who ended up higher in the competition (even tho it ended couple moths ago and the placement on the reality show doesn’t matter as much as idolberts think in the real world)

    b) male contestants

I would take that into account but:

    a) Naima got a Very Good Response

    b) Thia got a Good Response

    c) Naima and Thia finished 10th and 11th

    d) Namia and Thia are female

So, I believe that it is possible for a female contestant that finished higher than those two to get something better than an Idol Tepid response.

Personally, I blame the shoes and the song. Top 40 doesn’t accept many songs like that and she cannot move in those shoes. I admit I’m not a pageant type of gal, but I thought Pia was her most likeable and geniune when she was reffing the wrestling. I’d love Jimmy to give the fun-and-casual Pia a chance to see what she can do with an audience. I think freed from her occupational health hazard stilts, her hair in a pony tail and a fun song, she could get a massive response from the audience.

  • TylerWV

I like the slow parts of Pias song a lot. The uptempo part is overproduced, imo, making it somewhat of a mess. They need to take out the junk and let her voice shine.

[wipes away tears of laughter] So now you want to be “private” with the fauxmance they paid to pimp on TMZ and they made sure they included on your AOL interview? Please. Clutching your pearls is so ridiculous at this point. If you’re going to fauxmance it up, at least pick someone a little more buzzy and less sleazy than Ballas!

  • Indigobunting

LOL good thing you told me- this is the first year I’m going (note to self: stop watching videos. will be sick of the entire thing by August 23rd)

It is quite the experience; an Idol concert is definitely a bubble concert experience.

The fans scream for everyone- in fact it can be ear splitting (note-I have only attended S8 where they had a great response to everyone). and the all day waiting to see your Idols and get an autograph-never witnessed that at any other concert.

It can be a shock I think, to leave Idol and play for 1-2k audiences that are appreciative, but they really have to work at bringing them to their feet and keeping them there (unless the audience is comprised of mostly Idol fans, lol).

  • halo9125

If you’re going to fauxmance it up, at least pick someone a little more buzzy and less sleazy than Ballas!

What I do know: she didn’t pick him.
What I don’t know: I believe it actually turned into something.

  • songsungblue

Well, for her sake – I hope that ‘something’ is a restraining order ;)

  • TwigLA

I thought the story was she asked James/James wrestler friend to get her an introduction. How is that not picking him?

But if you are buzzy and non-sleazy, why would you fauxmance? Maybe they tried Maks first and he gave them the finger.

The single seems to be available for download on Amazon. Preview works fine, I am at work so I don’t know if it will let you download. But I see no promotion on amazon.

Didn’t Maks do a bachelor in the Ukraine? Ooooh… maybe they should make Pia the next bachelorette! Busy pop star too busy to date…

  • LoveDaRocker

Do being in that show (wherever it is) makes you sleazy? My impression is that he is not a seazy type (by entertainment world standards at least).
As to Pia in the bachelorette, I have never watched a full episode of the show (or the bachelor), but I gather that the success of a season lies primarily on the personality of the subject, and Pia seems too bland to anchor a show like that. On the other hand, maybe a show like this gives her enough time to show her true self (for better or for worst).
Besides, pop music is all about buzz. Maybe being in a reality show while recording her album is the buzz she needs to be successful (see Ashley Simpson).

  • car3278sweet

Large swaths of the audience booing or refusing to applaud while the rest just sit there? Never happens (although I did not attend the S9 concert).

hee hee. Well, I was at the concert last year and can safely report there were no boos. Though there some yawns, especially at the beginning. It wasn’t until the final three that the audience actually woke up (well, maybe a mild hello for Siobhan).

I’ve watched many of the vids from this years tour – there’s been a much bigger attempt to make it a “show” instead of just mini-concerts from loser to winner. I like this setup better.

Kirsten, while I bow to your Idol concert expertise, whether the audience sits or stands is not a black-or-white thing, as in: audience standing – good, audience sitting – bad. The reasons people get on their feet, whoop, or dance has a lot to do with the type of music being performed, and sometimes the type of performer they’re watching, but it’s not necessarily a sign of approval, nor is sitting or being quiet a sign of disapproval. Now, for Pia, these things may be true, I don’t know. I wasn’t there. But I don’t really agree with the generalization, I guess. No offense.

Download works fine, once you figure it out – I think I bought the song twice, lol. But Amazon ain’t iTunes, that’s for damn sure.

  • RockiDreams

All I can say is Halo9125 – thank you for the FACTS that you are aware of. I enjoy reading them. My impression of Pia from day one has been she is a classy young woman and I for one hope she has all the success in the world. I like the song – who knows what sells these days anyway. Absolutely no one. I remember some obscure song that was played during SYTYCD and it became a huge hit. I completely forget the name of the song since I wasn’t a fan of it but it just shows you never know what will click.

  • LoveDaRocker

It will be helpful (to me) if a photog catches Pia when the tour rolls by Florida and they take a break on the beach. Just saying.

since when are singles available to download off Amazon?

I remember seeing singles on Amazon within the past couple years, but the real news is Amazon’s recent move to reduce the price of top-selling singles to 69 cents. Yup, another effort to grab market share from iTunes. (Rolling Stone article)

  • jsrj98

I attended the show last night and I enjoyed Pia’s performance of the song more than the recording. To me she gave it more life and excitement. I would have to say the the reaction to Pia in general was less than most of the other girls, especially compared to Lauren and Haley– who have now or likely soon will also have recording contracts. I’ve said this before, but if they want to give her a better crowd reaction, and that would certainly be more fun for her, then she needs to start off with “I’ll Stand By You.” Assuming she hits and sustains the glory note the way we know she can, then crowd WILL give her a much better response– and the show is off to a slamming start. Later, when she sings her single, the crowd will be more into it.

It’s been more than a couple of years. Not only do they have several hundred singles that are available for 69 cents, they also have a lot of well known singles that are free. They are currently selling Pia’s song for 99 cents.

  • Indigobunting

Well, boo; I bought Dannys Second Hand Heart for $1.29 at Amazon. Not that 30 cents will break me

You are correct – nobody has any idea what will actually happen; we can only speculate on what we think will happen.
I am not optimistic personally – and I am one who is rooting hard for it to succeed.
“Jar of Hearts” (assuming this is the song you are referring to) is a song that is very unique coming from a girl with an interesting, distinctive voice. On top of that, she got a recorded version of the song to play during one of the higher rated summer TV programs. Pia didn’t have any of that working for her. Also, there is the “mystery” factor in that not a soul knew who Christina was – and I bet many people instantly looked it up online right after the show, or even during it. I just think the circumstances are different…and that her song was more “modern” than Pia’s. (Nevermind the fact that she wrote it herself – and I think that does help an artist when they have at least SOME input in what they are singing)
But we’ll see what happens. This is new territory for Idol to try something like this; it can go a long way in determining how they promote future “non-winners”….perhaps as early as later this year with Haley/James if they finally do sign at some point!

  • Elliegrll

Pia has a couple of things going for her. First, she’s with Interscope, and they have a solid reputation for promoting their artists both in the media and with radio stations. And most importantly, Jimmy Iovine seems to think that she is very marketable, so he is going to actively push her. This isn’t the situation that some idols have found themselves in, where the label clearly doesn’t want them, and only signed them because they were contractually obligated to do so. Maybe Jimmy isn’t totally interested in artist development, but he has shown that he’s committed to promoting Pia, and that’s something that not all of the alums have gotten.

  • halo9125

Unfortunately, I think they blew it, and big time, by not releasing it yesterday when there was some buzz. If it can get some airplay maybe there’s a chance- now- I’m not so sure.

Are you suggesting Pia gets another solo?

  • songsungblue

I’ll Stand By You is quickly becoming known as the only song she can actually sing with any emotion [although complete with pageant arm]. I’m not sure there’s a lot of mileage in beating that sonic horse into the ground.

  • jsrj98

Are you suggesting Pia gets another solo?

No. I was suggesting that she sing ISBY instead of the Alicia Keys tune.

I’ll Stand By You is quickly becoming known as the only song she can actually sing with any emotion [although complete with pageant arm]. I’m not sure there’s a lot of mileage in beating that sonic horse into the ground.

Well, I observed first-hand a tepid response (compared to other girls) to her 1st song. I guess the question is what’s the value in continuing to sing it?
