FOX will give the Phillip Phillp’s “Home” music video its broadcast premiere during Wednesday’s So You Think You Can Dance repeat.

That’s sweet guys, but why are you premiering the video opposite the Olympics?  I know you want to direct some eyeballs back to FOX on Wednesday, but I don’t think airing “Home” is going to cut it.  Fans will be watching the Olympics, hoping to catch the song during womens’ gymnastics coverage. That’s what I’ll be doing.

Why not wait until SYTYCD comes back from hiatus next week? It would be a win win for both the show and Phillip.

From the press release

FOX, in partnership with Ford, will world broadcast premiere the video for AMERICAN IDOL winner Phillip Phillips’ coronation single, “Home,” during SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE on Wednesday, Aug. 8( 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Immediately after Phillips claimed his victory on AMERICAN IDOL’s Season 11 finale, the 21-year old Leesburg, GA, native’s debut single, “Home,” was released, showcasing his rich, raspy vocals and masterful guitar skills. The single marked the biggest digital sales week for an AMERICAN IDOL winner’s coronation song, with 278,000 downloads sold, and has been certified gold. Recently, “Home” climbed from No. 98 to No. 1 on the iTunes singles chart after it was featured as the soundtrack for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics team in London.

The video for “Home” was directed by U.K.-born Joseph Toman and was filmed on the road during this summer’s American Idol Live! Tour.

The 12th season of AMERICAN IDOL kicks off in January 2013.

AMERICAN IDOL has been the No. 1 entertainment program among Total Viewers for the past nine consecutive seasons. To date, IDOL alums have produced 349 No. 1 Billboard hits and garnered nearly 250 million iTunes downloads.

And yesterday during the live Olympics broadcast it played through an entire commercial for the gymnastic’s competition. I swear, it went on forever! Seemed like 5 minutes!!

I know.  I was watching as well.

I agree with mj.  It seems kind of pointless to premiere the video on a show that while it showcases some of the best dancers in the country, the ratings are sinking fast and basically not many are watching the show with or without the existence of the Olympics but of course the Olympics is currently eating away at the viewership of most shows right now and since it is being used during the female gymnastics competition, it would make more sense to debut the video on NBC instead during a commercial break tomorrow night during the last night of the ladies gymnastics competition rather than on Fox on Wednesday of this week when most will be watching the Olympics anyway. It really would make more sense for Nigel to wait until next week.

Anyway, congrats to Phillip on the successful sales of Home.

Many events are listed for Wed. night, but no gymnastics of either gender.

SYTYCD is a repeat of the show with Alvin Ailey, when was that?  I suppose “Home” will replace the other guest, if there was one.  I can’t complain about a free plug.

Strategically, yes, but most of the available ad time was already sold before the Olympics started. And if you figure even $500,000 for a 30-second commercial, I can’t see TPTB spending that kind of money on this song. At the typical 40-cent gross margin for a single, Home would have to sell an additional 1.25 million copies just to pay for a 30-second clip that directs viewers to Vevo for the whole video.

The SYTYCD placement is probably free or nearly free, though I agree it’d be better a week later when people are actually watching.

Eh, good for Phillip getting it shown on SYTYCD. I know I’ve been channel surfing during the Olympics. NBC’s coverage stinks, so there are a lot of times I just don’t want to watch the same thing over and over.

There’s no gymnastics on the Olympics Wednesday, but there is a lot of track & field, and that’s usually a huge ratings draw as well. So I can’t see SYTYCD getting many viewers on that night.

Why not wait until the Olympics are over and it’s not a repeat of SYTYCD? Seems that would be much better.

I think it’s great Phillip’s song is airing on SYTYCD.  Not everybody watches the Olympics.  It’s called lagniappe!

home is close to be #1 again, thx to the NBC coverage. I think its risky to sacrifice a possible transmission of home during the olympics for a taped program that will have low ratings.

Hooray for Home. So only a few million will see it on SYTYCD. IT’s all promo.

NBC really is really beginning to bore me – same endless sports over and over. You think the Olympics only consisted of swimming, beach volleyball, gymnastics and now, running. It would have been nice to see boxing, soccer, fencing, judo etc. in prime time. I know I’m going to check out the repeat of SYTYCD, because I missed most of it the first showing.

Maybe “Home” is losing its magic mojo in terms of the Olympics. McKayla McKinney fell on her vault and Gabby Douglas finished last in the uneven bars.

    Nah! ;)
