    Boy sounds good.  Nice performance.

Sounds just like typical P2, lol…. never quite hitting the upper notes square – that’s his style.  I’m getting used to that.

  • teacup

    That was really bad.

  • Angelica Tijerina Taylor

    That was not good.

  • durbesque

Is this a well-known song?  I don’t recognize it.  He actually hit some of the top notes right on pitch.  G-sharp is near the top of his range, but not the absolute top.  All the Ohz in ‘Home’ start a half-tone higher, on A-natural, and they have become easy for him.  Practice makes perfect…well….

  • girlygirltoo

    This wasn’t good. I

  • usedtobelucy

Well, this is just the wrong song for PhilPhil, I’d say. Doesn’t really lend itself to his style. Needs melismatic soul, more like.

Elliott sings it a lot. Suits his style a lot better. ….

  • Taylor

Yes, it is very much a well known song. Maybe it’s unrecognizable when P2 sings it. lol

The original version in 1970 by Donny Hathaway:

It has been covered on various Christmas albums by artists such as Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, The Temptations, Christina Aguilera, Harry Connick Jr., Boys ll Men, Lady Antebellum and Cee Lo Green to name a few.

  • angiedb

I really like this! Great job, Phil!

  • Valarie

Why does P2 get a pass for grunting what should be a low note? To me, the low notes are just as important as the high ones. If you can’t sing the high or low notes, pick another song.

  • justmefornow

Well….. what can I say except that wasn’t exactly in his wheelhouse.

  • Incipit

Thanks for the links, Taylor and usedtobelucy.  I couldn’t place the song at first, though it had a familiar sound. (And lots of low notes, but a relatively simple melody line).

Donny Hathaway – Errol Cooney played guitar for his daughter, Lalah, on a song from her show that was posted here a while back – if we were playing Six Degrees of Somebody, there’s a connection. ;)

Somewhat related…they’ve announced the performers for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade…and Phillip’s not on the list.  Any ideas why not?

  • hellomusicgirl

I enjoy Phillip but I have agree with what others have said about this performance — not quite in his wheelhouse. It almost sounded to me like he was rushing. If he tried a bit of a more drawn out beat, it might have helped. And maybe that would allow him to focus on hitting the notes in the center?

This Christmas was part of David A’s setlist on his tour last year and is a good example of the drawn out tempo I’m talking about:

Of course, I’m not sure how concerned Phillip is about singing stellar Christmas music lol.

  • tucker davis

Just heard the commercial for ‘Extreme Makeover-Holiday Edition” and yes, they’re using P2’s ‘Home’ as background music with obvious vocals.

  • wkstrack

This isn’t the first time an Idol winner hasn’t performed for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Taylor, Cook, Kris, and Lee didn’t perform. And I don’t think Carrie did the year she won Idol.

  • journey1

    Love David’s version.  Very jazzy!

  • iluvai

I like this song a lot. He sounds good in parts. Awww….

  • Fan Dja

Love this jazzy performance of This Christmas by David A.  Saw him perform it live and it was an audience favorite.  Would love for him to record it.

I’m happy for PP and all the success he’s having but I still don’t get it, just not my cup of tea.

  • Jenna

Yes Elliott’s version is my favorite of this song <3

Phillip really couldn't find the rhythm which is like 75% of what makes the song so good.

  • usedtobelucy

“Yes Elliott’s version is my favorite of this song <3

Phillip really couldn't find the rhythm which is like 75% of what makes the song so good."

    Exactly. And, me, too!

Elliott and Archie are both great at swinging to rhythms of this sort. PhilPhil's strengths lie in a completely other direction.

  • IrisandLilies

I would love to hear Phillip sing either “Silent Night” or “Away in the Manger.”  Those two Christmas carols are best sung in a tender manner, which is Phillip’s forte.

  • Luz Mae Salvador

    wow!!! really good!!

  • durbesque

Phil & Band said “Let’s get through this thing as fast as possible.”

I just watched 2 of Archie’s performances of it…omg…night and day!

They are in different categories.  Archie is a Singer…Phillip is a Guitarist who sings.

  • CanadianLady

I enjoyed this. Didn’t notice any problems other than a few words hard to make out. Would buy it if it was on iTunes. He Phillipsed it and it works for me.

Having said that, I wish everyone articulated their words the way Scotty does. :)

  • Fan Dja

This is my favorite David A performance of This Christmas.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sorry, but P2 butchered that classic. Totally wrong song choice.

  • kmd23

David A. vocals on This Christmas were amazing.  Wrong song choice for P2. I am a fan of P2’s but I don’t think he can just sing any song and sound good.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Very nice rendition. Archie was cute and funny the way that he introduced the song as a ‘groovy” Christmas song. lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

This was discussed in an earlier thread. Although Scotty performed for the MTDP last year, all of the past Idol winners have not performed:

mjsbigblog 1 week ago in reply to fuzzywuzzy
The winners don’t always perform at the Macy’s parade. For instance, in Season 7, David A took that gig instead of David C.  Pretty sure that neither Kris A or Adam L were dancing with turkeys on Thanksgiving. Taylor Hicks didn’t do Macys.

It’s not a gig that’s set in stone for the winner. In fact, there are no gigs that are mandatory, except maybe the Disney stuff they are contractually obligated to do.

According to wiki, it turns out that someone from Idol has performed at the Macy’s TDP each year since 2003, but it hasn’t necessarily been the winner that year.
