Wow … he’s going to open for Springsteen in Rio ?
Phillip is still so low key about his success..

  • Madilo

OMG i’m so excited to see Phillip again, he’s so handsome and his music is good! YES WELCOME BACK :)

  • Anny_nanny

I’ll think about it, when I will check my loss and update The Beatles-anthology.

  • Madilo

    Phillip freaking Phillips !

  • Anny_nanny

I want to capture the dynamics.

    Good morning, Steven! LOL

  • Anny_nanny

    What is “low key”?

  • Madilo

Can’t believe these updates, was not expecting this at all like at all.

  • Madilo

    down to earth

  • Anny_nanny

    Tnks!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I like his modesty and it appears to be genuine.

  • TheOther

It worked out that Phillip was not available to do this last year. Now, he has a CD, 2 hit singles, a tour to promote. They usually have the Top 2, but had to skip it last year.

  • Madilo

That’s what a lot of people like about him

  • alar borja

    ” Low-key ” …. I agree with fuzzywuzzy and Madilo .. exactly what it means .. low-key , humble, down to earth !!!!

everything that ‘s equates with taking in success in a good way !!

  • alar borja

and very noticeable in the Interview.. !!

  • Margaux

I’m impressed with the large band – 3 brass players, 2 guitars, drums and a cello/keyboard guy. Is this going to be Phil’s tour band? When was the last time a recent Idol winner went out with this many musicians? Good for Phil!

  • Madilo

    I don’t have words now, he’s loved period !

  • SteelWauhterz

Glad to see P2 rework his songs, and stay engaged with his music. He looks and sounded great. These songs have great legs, and I hope his second CD will continue his success in the market place.

  • Madilo

    so many musicians with Phillip

  • dante

I loved this guy on Idol and am so happy for his success. Didn’t buy his CD but a friend recently let me borrow it and I liked pretty much every song so I will purchase when it goes on sale again.

I am primarily an Adam Lambert and Kelly Clarkson fan but Phillip is on my short list of Idol faves :). Love the timbre of his voice and style of his songs.

  • Madilo

Will let you know when the album is on sale but why don’t you just buy it now it’s worth the $ lol

  • Madilo

    Where’s the MOTM performance ?

  • Madilo

Crowd pic. Great irony in Carson Daly of The Voice having to introduce Phillip’s performance of MOTM, lol

    West coast airing coming up…….

  • PinkClouds20

Happy for Phillip’s success. Loved him first time I saw him on Idol.

1.Phillip sings with the strong energy.

2.So Easy surpriseingly becomes the background music.

3.GGG could have a chance to make the top 10 this weekend. Hope it won`t return to the top 40. Staying longer at the top 20 is a good position to attract pop radio.

  • jayidrocks

Did he perform only these 3 songs ?

  • Jason Gorny

wow his album is #9 on itunes. that’s awesome!

  • ADRIANAARG1980

Sorry I have to say it “The Vote Down Freak” is back LMFAO!!!!

  • bridgette12

No you don’t have to say it, MJ has already told people several times to stop whining about the vote down sign.

  • Anny_nanny

Why whining? It’s kind of funny, person has the only affair is to go through and put everyone Down.

  • TheOther

And this is why Interscope will continue to invest with good promotion opportunities. Phillip’s career trajectory has been about making these types of appearances and being rewarded with nice boost in sales.

  • ADRIANAARG1980

“whining”….Soooorry…but I was trying to be funny…I really don’t freaking care the votes down …or up lol

  • ADRIANAARG1980

Phillip Phillips: Journey to the Finale??? lol

  • ADRIANAARG1980

OK! Hottie of the Day: Phillip Phillips http://shar.es/xNGM4 vía @sharethis

“Every time we hear a Phillip Phillips song on the radio we’re like “OMG, is this Dave Matthews?” They’re voice twins. But every time we see him we’re like “mmmm yes thanks more please.” Phillip’s been a celeb crush of ours since he won American Idol last year and he is certainly keeping up that hottie status with his performance on The Today Show this morning. Exhibit A:

Honestly, any dude with a guitar is A-plus in our book, but Phillip’s
mix of scruff and amazing voice and just general all-around talent is
    pretty darn attractive. Agreed?”

  • Anny_nanny

Yes. People want to re-listen Volcano & We’ve Got Tonight. )
I still don’t understand, why Top 5 this year haven’t received EP, I saw that many fans were waiting it and wanted to buy the collection.

  • ADRIANAARG1980

AI didn’t do it this year? Sad

  • Bugme Nomor

I didn’t know Courtney Leonard could sing.

  • ADRIANAARG1980

    Great Pics, MJ :D

  • lila6089

Phillip looks and sounds great! Can’t wait to see him perform at Jones Beach on 8/28!!

  • girlygirl

    Nice job by Phillip.

  • Mateja Praznik

    Boring. Dull.

  • Liteasy

Phillip is back with lots of energy, good looks and happy. Yay!!!!!

  • jpfan2

I’m on board with MOTM as single #3. It sounded the best of all 3 songs he did today. It’s nice to finally have him do a song he wrote and reflects more of what he’s about as an artist. It may not be as big as Home or GGG but I think it could have a decent run on radio.

  • Incipit

I don’t listen to any of his stuff, he’s so not my cuppa’ – thus I’m indifferent to what his Label may chose for the next release – but I can read what’s going on – and I have to say – good for the Idol Franchise.

Obviously, enough people like the DMB/Mumfordian hybrid sound to make him the first AI champion to score a pair of top 40 Hot 100 hits from a debut album since the original guitar playing singer/songwriter, David Cook, did it three times – 5 years ago. Maybe he’ll get #3, maybe he won’t – but this genre from the show is doing OK – so, good for that news.

  • macfae

Until now I would have preferred Get Up Get Down for # 3. but MOTM is pretty darn good.
And with Phillip performing it today, it may possibly be his next single.

  • jpfan2

He’s 100% getting single #3. GGG is going platinum in a couple of weeks and radio liked it. His album is also still in the BB200 so that’s a factor as well. Of course that doesn’t mean single #3 will be a hit. ;0

  • LeoCS

He sings much better the songs he composed. The difference between the two singles and MOTM is blatant.

  • macfae

I’ve seen performers get a nice boost from a Today appearance but this is freaking awesome. The Deluxe album was #64 on iTunes around midnight and now #10 …wow !
He really looked and sounded great…I am very happy for him.

  • macfae

    haha…don’t you love it.
    : )

  • girlygirl

I think Incipit meant maybe single #3 would be another Top 40 Hot 100 hit :)

  • Madilo

All the songs are good imo, it’s miss or hit with Phillip and thank God, looks like hit is above miss :)

  • Madilo

He sure looks good in those pics

  • Incipit

Yes, exactly, girlygirl. Sorry I wasn’t clear.

  • Madilo

Yeah this is huge in my book, i was not expecting this boost at all, imagine if they discounted the album and GGG now lol
King Phillip is back guys !

  • Madilo

    hahahaha

  • Barbara Rodriguez

Awesome job Phillip !!! I can’t wait to use my mother’s day gift 2 tickets to see Phillip and John on Aug. 17th at Comcast Center in Mansfield Ma

  • ADRIANAARG1980

Yeah, but I would love Beggin’ in threre, was my fav :)

  • jpfan2

    Sorry. My bad.

  • Ronnie D

I must say, his personality really shined in these performances. More than ever before, at least from what I remember. He is also lookin fine as ever lol

  • macfae

I know. That one was great ! He’s done it at some shows and yowza, he just kills it,

  • angiedb

So happy to see Dave back on the cello! Love the horns as well. Phil looks and sounds great! Hoping I get to see him on tour with John Mayer when they come through Indiana.

  • Madilo

    Next tv performance ?

  • jayidrocks

While some of his songs from the album have grown on me after hearing more often ( for example “A Fools Dance” ), I still don´t like MOTM, sorry.

  • macfae

He looks so happy and sounds great… and excited, in his low key way

    short backstage interview…..

    http://www.today.com/video/today/52343328#52343328

  • girlygirl

Isn’t that the big rock festival that Phillip is playing? I don’t think that that would technically be considered him opening for Springsteen since there are a ton of artists playing that festival.

  • pattie capet

so thrilled about MOTM. this really sounds just like him. i knew he’d hit big! very happy for him.

  • Aakash Mansukhani

    Yup, just those three!

  • Incipit

Yes, girlygirl, it is that Rock in Rio Festival with tons of artists. They are on the same bill – although IDK if they are playing the same stage.

It’s a great gig for Phillip, but he is not opening for The Boss, unless all the acts are.

  • TheOther

    http://rockinrio.com/rio/en/line-up/

See attached line-up for 9/21. Springsteen is listed as a Headline act on the home page.

  • maymay

If Man On The Moon becomes the third single, its big hope will depend on GGG`s pop radio chart. For example, Imagine Dragon`s Radioactive is a pop radio smash so it helps their third single Demon(only being played on Alternative and AAA) to make the top 50 on iTunes.

Man On The Moon is totally different from the previous two singles commerically and musically. At least HAC could not embrace it quickly like GGG. The Lumineers`s second single Stubborn Love fails on HAC. Having two smash singles on HAC doesn`t mean HAC will play your new single unless you are a big name or your single is a catchy song.

Anyway, Phillip could lose his radio energy by choosing Man On The Moon as the third single. If people don`t care this single, its longevity for being the third single will short. If it doesn`t sell well, that maybe hurts Phillip`s credit for being a songwritter. But it is what it is. Phillip have had the successful sales for two singles so he have room to do what he wants to do.

Still, Get Up Get Down is a perfect song for the third single.

  • teekee

Kudos to Phillip! Listening to the album, I really liked MOTM, but live, it’s a whole nother thang! Love it!

  • Incipit

Great link, TheOther! Yes they have The Boss headlining on that World stage and John Mayer, Phillip and another band playing the same stage – there are several other stages too – and scads of other acts.

Looks like a great time to be had.

  • Jason Gorny

LOL That must have been awkward for Carson Daly to introduce Phillip since TV is a rival to Idol. Carson’s face seemed kinda “mean”/annoyed when they were talking about P2 and how successful he is.

  • maymay

According to Digital Sales Data, http://goo.gl/mcUGB
#92 sales are 2461 copies and #54 are 3744 copies. So Home sells 1300 copies after Today Show performance. As for GGG, #31 are 6461 and #21 are 8111. So it sells 1600 copies.

Man On The Moon is #1371. I think it sells very low copies after Today Show performance. #100 are 2177 copies but #1371? Must very low.

I guess the label doesn`t want this song to become the third single but they maybe will respect Phillip`s choice.

  • Anny_nanny

    Leno, 07/29

  • Anny_nanny

I’m indifferent as to be sold to 3rd single, I don’t care whether it will get support HAC or POP, I’m only interested in the fact that a song by Philip gained the respect of several small formats. Because it is important for Phillip, because it is important for me as a fan.

Yes, sales interesting to follow, but I am most pleased by the interest in his album after performance. And if only a few people checked the album because they heard MOTM and thought “Oh, dude is not only folky, but something else”, I’ll be happy.

I love GUGD, but MOTM is “pure” Philip.

  • Anny_nanny

Well, so I won’t envy you so much. ))

  • maymay

    1. Several small formats? Only AAA. And I am not sure even whether the small format AAA will play Man On The Moon a lot like GGG. AAA is used to being indifferent to Idol singers. It would play Home and GGG a lot because they both are catch singles.

2.Get Up Get Down is not a folky song too. If people hear GUGD, they could think “dude is not only folky, but something else” too.

3.GUGD is written by Phillip. Of course, it is pure Phillip too.

GUGD is exactly a perfect song for being the third single commeriaclly and musically. It can sell well, also can make Phillip get credit for being a songwritter and being himself.

If rdaio doesn`t want to play Man On The Moon, that will have a lot side effects for Phillip.

People can stay romantc for what they want but between being romantic and being realistic, making a balance is better.

  • M.J. Mac

Really enjoyed all of the performances on the Today Show…Man on the Moon is one of my favorites. He really sold that performance…I agree with another ‘poster’ he seemed to be really comfortable performing on the stage, but he really seemed into MOTM…not sure if it will be accepted by radio, but I am willing to wait and see what happens…people and fans have been wrong about Phillip before..lol. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t remember seeing anything from the label or Phillip stating that MOTM is the 3rd single?? Just seems like a lot of speculation at this point…I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

  • macfae

Yes. Complete speculation. Phillip said in an interview not long ago ( at the Much Music awards, I think ) that they were working on choosing the next single soon but that was all he would say.

  • tucker davis

One reason I love MOTM (and most of P2′s other original songs) is he always lets the music shine. If you watch closely, even when he is singing he is stepping away from the mic. This use to bother me, but I think it comes from the fact that he can’t wait to get to the music! Now I just see it as being Phillip. He knows his vocal limitations…but, man, he can flat-out play some music!

  • Anny_nanny

I like GUGD, but I’m not sure that’s a good choice. People accuse this song as DMB-imitation.

    And remark about http://goo.gl/mcUGB:
I don’t understand how this site calculates sale. They give songs level 30s rooms 43?/week and 57? for 20′s. I could be wrong, but BB Digital Songs says that last week it was 62? and 89? respectively. And Philip (#41) received 49?.
I can’t predict how the song move and it falls right now, but I will be happy if non GGG will ~60k.

  • TheOther

At the end of the day, Phillip needs to have a song that gets radio airplay and sells, which means it needs to have mainstream appeal. Just because a song is a fan favorite, it doesn’t mean that radio will feel the same way. In as far as respect, I think he is very well liked outside the bubble. Also, if it appeared Phillip is more into playing MOTM, it probably has more to do with the fact that he hasn’t performed it as much as Home and GGG.

  • Mia

MOTM was great but one thing to think about.

Phillip live with his songs is consistently superior than Phillip recorded and it is just not his expressiveness of the songs, it is the arrangements, the dynamism, the interplay with his various cast of musician band-mates.

What goes in favor of GUGD is that the recorded version is probably as good as Phillip live. As in live he lacks the full horn section, in recorded the horn section makes the song- gives it a big band vibe.

MOTM I thought was a good song recorded but the live version totally blows it out of the water. When playing live he has so many rich solo instrumental parts for sax and guitar. The acoustic/electric guitar outro that invokes Pink Floyd when Errol Cooney is on fire takes this song from good to haunting.

Unfortunately what will go to the radio is the recorded version.

    Recorded GUGD>>> Recorded MOTM.

Just based on that argument I would like GUGD as the next single.

  • Anny_nanny

Phillip Phillips Frisbee and sleeping helps band bond
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFDA0FTPKC0

  • tucker davis

You make an excellent point…enjoyed your post!

  • jayidrocks

You get a point with the recorded version of GUGD.
I would go a bit further, Because for me GUGD is the only song from Phillips album, where I prefer the recorded to the Live-version. I think the recorded version is vocally and instrumental much stronger.

  • Madilo

    How does this work ?

  • Karen C

The thing is, if he is going to have long term success, they should release something he wrote, even if it’s a bit different than what he’s released before. If it does well, it bodes well for the next album, especially if he writes it more in his own style.

  • Karen C

MOTM is one of my favorites on the album. I find that I like the songs best that Phillip wrote on, which shows me I am really a fan of his music.

  • Madilo

Hold On is my favorite but Tell Me A Story is not far, beautiful song

  • MissMyEm

Springsteen never has an opening act. He plays for 3.5 hours. Phillip is probably at the same festival, performing on the same stage but is probably not opening for him. Neither is John Mayer I’m betting who is also performing that day, according to the flyer.
