American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips, performed his hit “Home” in a concert honoring Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama at the One World concert held in New York on Tuesday night.

Phillip joined his hero, Dave Matthews, plus a line up that included Cyndi Lauper, David Crosby, and Roberta Flack in a musical celebration to promote  peace that was broadcast live on Axis TV.

At the end of the night, the musicians joined together to perform John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

    I thought he did great!

  • thirdtime

Phil sounded really, really rough (and I think he knew it) - but it’s clear the crowd LOVED him.  If I had been there I would have been dancing, clapping and singing along with the crowd.

I thought the first four people singing Imagine sounded – er – rough? As in off-key and terrible. Was very pleasantly surprised by Phillip, who not only hit his notes, but also belted it out.

  • potatorocks

I loved this performance.   Philip rough?  Nope.    Any word from him regarding his experience with the Dalai Lama or Dave Matthews?

  • yoshirox10

I was in the audience for this.  I’m not a big Phillip fan, but I thought he at least sounded better here than he did on tour.  The crowd loved him.

Side note: Sure it was a minor oversight, but it was in Syracuse, not NYC.

  • OffLeash

Philip rough? I totally disagree. He sounded great, and I’m with CanadianLady, I was surprised at how well he belted it out on Imagine. On the other hand, like CanadianLady said, the first four were rough!

  • durbesque

Phillip’s voice has blossomed since the Finale.  It has gained in fullness, warmth, and beauty, while retaining the ‘everyman’ character essential for this folky type song.

  • standtotheright

I thought that the belting (not just from P2, but from Bedingfield and Furtado) was entirely inappropriate for the song. It’s about hoping for a better world among those who share that vision, not yelling at people to shame them into caring.

That whole peformance of Imagine was a train wreck, from everyone.

He did fine on Home. And managed to sound a lot more articulate, even while nervous, than he has on some other occasions. That’s promising.

  • justmefornow

P2 is very charmingly dorky here, lol. It works for him. I like him more now than I did on the show. “Home” sounded good.
The group number of “Imagine” however, was a complete hot mess. Wow.

  • chillj

Wow!  That is an honor.  Wish I could sing (better).

  • chillj

Well, Durbesque, can I guess you are a big fan?  (I’m just joshing, I like his voice, also).

    He also has great hair.

    And teeth.

    Dam, he is hot.

  • DB987

Thought P2 sounded fine on Home. He is really an artist that gains by the quirky visuals one gets. I enjoy the whole package rather then just listening to him.  His voice is what it is like it of hate it.

The group performance was awful just awful a scream fest for 99% of them.

I actually think it’s one of the stupidest songs ever written, and agree this was a train wreck. However, my fear was that he might mumble or mess up, so I was glad he held his own.

A correction here…This concert was not in New York City. It was in Syracuse, New York, one mile from my house.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That group singing “Imagine” was horrid.

  • IrisandLilies

Surprisingly, the singing here (other than the bum notes) didn’t bother me quite as much as Joshua’s rendition of this song on AI.  I have yet to forgive him for that horror.

With respect to Phillip, I was favorably impressed by his singing on this song even before I knew it was he who was singing.  I think he may have “belted it out”  because it would have seemed out of place to sing the song in a normal tone when everyone else around him was belting it out.   Moreover, I don’t think that it’s necessarily the belting that’s the problem here; rather it’s the runs that many of the singers insisted on incorporating into their solos.  In my opinion, when you want the listener to focus on the lyrics of the song, you should stick to the melody and avoid runs because runs are all about the voice singing the song and not the song itself.  Also, I wonder if many of the people belted the song because they may not have been near a microphone and felt that they needed to project to be heard.

HE IS SO FINE. I know WGWGs only win because they are hot and whatever but seriously my underwear ran off and is nowhere to be found.

  • rodolfochengcanepa

He did it great base on the circunstances, but he was so nervous that he even mess the song “Home”, he sang the OHHHH AHHH one more time of the neccesary when he had to sing the “settle down part”, but it´s OK, nobody noticed or at least sounded good. I was really impressed by his performance during imagine.

  • durbesque

It’s also one of the most revered songs ever written.  That’s why I would never have told the truth, but you did, and I agree.  There will be world peace when humans are extinct.

This performance of Imagine is a big hot mess.

If I ever go to a concert where they’re playing Imagine, We are The World and Tomorrow together, I swear, I give a shot in my own head.

  • chillj

Imagine works better for me, because I went for many years misunderstanding the lyrics.  Making up your own is most helpful.

  • tucker davis

I love that he was introduced just by name with no mention of American Idol…at least on the video. And with ‘Imagine’, I recognized his voice before it showed him singing…guess we’ve heard it enough now..lol..was surprised he was given a solo line with all the other artists there…anybody know why?

  • getaway1

Phil’s team has done a GREAT job in positioning him with the best promotion. He looked and sounded really good.  And how humbling for the new kid on the block to be included in the solo ensemble with Imagine.
