Phillip Phillips is set to premiere a NEW SONG during the FOX Super Bowl Pregame Show on Sunday! The Band Perry will also perform.  Later,  opera singer, Renee Fleming will sing the anthem, while Bruno Mars takes over the half time show.

PHILLIP PHILLIPS and THE BAND PERRY will perform as part of the Super Bowl XLVIII pregame show in East Rutherford, NJ on Sunday, February 2, the NFL and FOX announced today.  The two acts will perform at the NFL Tailgate Party and part of each performance will be televised live on FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY.

In addition, Broadway will travel to New Jersey when the cast of the Tony and Grammy Award winning musical JERSEY BOYS and the cast of the electrifying musical ROCK OF AGES perform at the NFL Tailgate Party.

One of the biggest singles of 2012, the quadruple-platinum “Home” announced Phillip Phillips as a singer/guitarist of both rare authenticity and massive pop appeal. Centering on the American Idol season 11 winner’s rich, raspy vocals and masterful guitar skills, “Home” served as the lead single from The World from the Side of the Moon (19 Entertainment/Interscope Records)—a platinum-selling album that shot to #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart upon its November 2012 release. Phillips’s widely acclaimed debut also features the platinum single “Gone, Gone, Gone” and the Phillips’ penned “Where We Came From,” as well as a host of numbers that flaunt the 23-year-old Georgia native’s songwriting chops. Phillips spent most of 2013 on the road – with Matchbox 20, headlining a college tour and most recently he brought his rootsy brand of rock-and-roll to arenas around the country as the opening act for singer/songwriter superstar John Mayer’s Born and Raised tour. Phillips is currently in the studio recording his next album and will debut a new song during his NFL Tailgate Party performance.  www.phillipphillips.com

The NFL previously announced that RENÉE FLEMING will perform the National Anthem and BRUNO MARS will perform in the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show.

Ugh i was really hoping Candice would get the anthem, and its not like they gave it to a huge pop star anyway FOX really could’ve given it to her

  • Madilo

New song they say omg this is awesome news :)

  • TheOther

This will probably be the new single:) The article also says Phillip is in the studio recording his next album. I don’t think he’s been in NY all this time doing demos. He could have done that in Atlanta. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that’s where he recorded his last CD and that’s where his producer Greg Wattenberg works.

  • justmefornow

Congrats to P2, great opportunity. Oh and the Super Bowl isn’t this Sunday, it’s next Sunday Feb. 2nd.

  • Madilo

Do you think the song will be available on iTunes ? I hope so, i’m so excited :)

  • thirdtime

Congrats to Phillip! Things just keep getting better and better for that guy! It also looks good for Idol too, since he’s a recent winner.

  • Joanie Yan

Phillip is the poster boy for success after Idol – FOX will do everything to make sure of it.

  • girlygirl

He continues to get promo up the wazoo. Good for him.

  • girlygirl

They gave it to someone who is way more famous than Candice and also is connected to New York City since she performs with the Metropolitan Opera

  • and1987

Such an overrated one trick pony. I really believe if he was not handsome, ditsy teenage girls, grandmas, and moms would not have voted for him like crazy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I enjoyed Russell Crowe’s singing in ‘Les Miserables’ more than this man’s performances of “Time of the Season” and “Fat Bottom Girls”.

  • helo23

Oh. FOX is actually going to televise his performance. Good promo for him. Did his team just forgot about Where We Came From? Is it even charting? I hear GGG a lot of lite fm hac stations.

  • helo23

I wouldn’t even classify PP as handsome. He was really average. He was the ultimate WGWG for Idol, and that’s why he won.

  • Tay96

Is the fact that he’s handsome why he’s sold over a million records and why John Mayer wanted him to tour with him? You can believe what you want, but it won’t take away from his success thus far. :)

  • bridgette12

    Average is a perfect description.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Did his team just forgot about Where We Came From?

WWCF peaked too low on AAA to bother trying to cross to larger formats. If his team’s ready to try out a possible single in early February — as is clearly the case — there was no real reason to spend more on pushing WWCF to keep climbing out the other side of the holiday freeze. A couple months without presence on AAA is barely long enough to give PDs there time to miss him, and GGG is still pervasive in the mainstream, thanks to AC and recurrent play.

(While shopping at Kohl’s on Monday, I heard GGG in sequence with One Direction’s SOML and some other similar song that annoyed me, so it was probably from Ed Sheeran. That comes from one of those “ambient music for making shoppers spend more” services, of course. Credit P2 with my biting the bullet and buying the one pair of jeans I mildly disliked rather than out-and-out hating, if you wish.)

  • Sassycatz

They’re pushing American Idol during the Superbowl, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was tacked on to that.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It’s usually the use of “Home” in Olympics coverage that’s credited as the catalyst for pushing P2 from “Idol winner” to “dude with radio hits,” and the visuals associated with that were women gymnasts, not P2′s face.

He may be a one-trick pony (I’m still not sold on him musically), but he’s a one-trick pony with really good radio play on his debut album. The term “face made for radio” suggests ya don’t get radio play with just teh pretteh (which I’m also not sold on P2′s having in abundance, but evs).

Point is, he was marketed effectively on the basis of his singles, not his looks.

  • TheOther

Well, the “one trick” has made him the most successful winner from a TV singing competition since 2012. Platinum CD, 4X Platinum single, another Platinum+ single. Very successful John Mayer tour and his own headline college tour. Top 3 earning idol at $5M (tied with Adam Lambert). Nominated for AMA New Artist Of The Year – only male Idol winner ever to achieve this.

  • standtotheright

Like most top finalists on AI, he’s CW/ABCFamily-cast level attractive. If that means that most TV actors with professional stylists are of average attractiveness, then average is, like in graduate school, a B.

Basically, he’s at a level where his looks were a moderate asset, not a hindrance. Since he’s so insistent that he’s a muzishun doin srs biznus, that’s probably as far as he wants to be rated on the pulchritude scale.

  • gclay

She is famous but compared to the recent anthem singers (Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks) she is not that famous

  • Amy Beth

I’d call P2 cute, but not handsome.

He wasn’t boyish (a la David Archuleta), but he was still non-threatening enough.

    That’s the WGWG sweet spot.

  • Madilo

Who’s excited about this info ? I’m and you don’t know how much :)

  • Amy Beth

Truth be told, if Fox was going to reserve the NA for a music show winner, they would have given it to Alex & Sierra.

  • TheOther

I think anyone getting this opportunity would be excited:)

  • gclay

true but Candice fits the big diva like Flemming or Alicia Keys

  • Mia

I am excited but will be too nervous to watch it live.

  • jayidrocks

I wouldn´t him consider as classical gorgeous, because he has a flat forehead, his skin is a bit pale and his body isn´t muscular, but I think he is cute.
In my opinion he has pretty eyes and a nice smile.

  • Trina

Shes still more famous than Candice who hasnt even proved to be a successful winner yet. And as noted Renee has connections to NYC. The only reason Jordin got the NA gig so soon after her win despite not being a huge star at that point was 2 reasons 1 being the Giants were playing and her dad was a former Giants player AND the game was being held in her home town.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Glover a big diva? No. Nopers. Not even remotely. Nothing in her jazz-infused R&B style says “diva.”

In any case, Glover would never have been in line for this gig. The pop stars who get it are big names with big track records, and Fleming is huge in the opera world (plus, as others have pointed out, local connection).

  • Trina

Well at least all those ditsy grandmas and moms voted with their wallets. I actually care one bit WHY people vote for Idols as long as they support them after the show, and Phillips numbers speak volumes. There are other singers who are also “average” but they put out good music, thats the key.

  • DaisyMagnolia

To play devil’s advocate: how is Candice supposed to be successful if she isn’t even receiving mild support that would come from performing during Super Bowl activities in ANY capacity? It doesn’t have to be the NA. The current champion is getting no help, IMO.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

The Super Bowl is not the starting point for newbies to get support for going on to better things. The Super Bowl is where you get to perform if you’ve done well elsewhere.

Complaining about Glover’s placements/gigs/label support in the lesser venues that could eventually lead to success worthy of a Super Bowl slot is something I totally “get” (indeed, something I participate in, early and often). But you don’t start at the top.

P2 probably wouldn’t have his performance slot in the pre-game if he hadn’t had a huge song last year, despite the dedication and drive of his team.

  • gclay

at the end of the day FOX can really pick whoever they want to sing the anthem though. Kelly Clarkson sang it when it was on NBC because she was a mentor on the voice and obviously Christina couldn’t sing it again

  • DaisyMagnolia

I wasn’t suggesting that, not specifically anyway. But at least it would allow a few folks know that she’s still around.

My point–albeit a broad one–is that she has not received any viable promotion/support that could help her.

  • thirdtime

And he is humble. The perfect WGWG has to have boat loads of humility. LOL.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Any network’s goal in Super Bowl coverage is to have it be a huge EVENT from beginning to end. They’re going with big names who give a sense of specialness.

It’s not a designated showcase for each network’s singing show winners. Carrie Underwood’s national anthem in 2010 was when the game was on CBS, not FOX; and I’d bet Kelly Clarkson is better known for her #1 singles and successful albums than for a fleeting appearance on The Voice.

  • Louise Kelleher

PP was asked to tour with Matchbox too.

  • Madilo

What kind of song are you expecting ?

  • Mia

Upbeat, catchy. It is the Superbowl. His brooding, serious songs would be out of place.

  • macfae

I am thrilled for Phillip .it’s a great opportunity for him and I am excited to hear somethjng new.
I am looking forward to getting a sense of where the next album is going.
A new song may mean new material previewed on his Canadian tour. That would be terrific.

  • Tay96

I just didn’t know if they specifically asked for him themselves like John did, although I know Rob Thomas said AMAZING things about him and his talent.

  • Mia

He is where he is and getting the gigs that he is because the powers that be that picked him as JM opener ( JM himself), Rock in RIO ( Rock in Rio committee), NFL-FOX ( Fox executives) the powers that are not related to one another and have different agendas for inclusion believe that he is the next big thing.

He is doing everything he can to prove them right. I am so stoked for the future ! Health permitting, it is going to be a fantastic 2014 !

  • Mia

This gig is before the Canadian tour. I am hoping to hear more songs from the new album on the Canadian tour…

  • Mia

They did. Rob Thomas wanted him to open for the whole tour as per his interviews at the time but P2 could not because of his college tour.

  • elliegrll

Performing at anything involved with the SuperBowl isn’t minor. It’s also not something that’s done just so Fox can promote AI.

  • DesertBelle

Phillips is a truly talented singer/songwriter. He just keeps getting better. So happy to see him given this chance to showcase his talent.

  • macfae

Excactly. That was the intent of my comment

  • gclay

more so than Alex and Sierra

  • jayidrocks

With the two violines and the cello as instruments I would think the new song is more folky than jazzy.

  • Mia

He maybe working on more than one song.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

Please stay on topic (P2 and his super bowl gig), rather than fighting 2 year old fan wars, please.

  • Mason

Jessica sang the anthem like a zillion times but that did nothing to her music career. Singing anthem is not a good platform to launch a music career IMO

  • gclay

The Super Bowl would I remember Jessica got some attention when she performed it at the NBA finals, she was trending on twitter, but that was 10 months before her album came out not 2 weeks.

I think it was the week after the Super Bowl that Stronger by Kelly Clarkson reached #1

  • standtotheright

Whatever one’s opinions of his looks, I certainly wouldn’t credit him with the *humility* that could launch a thousand ships.

  • Mason

That was because Kelly was already an established and famous artist with global name recognition at that time

  • gclay

I’m going to expect a huge bump in popularity for Flemming who most of the American public is not familiar with

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Fleming was awarded a National Medal of the Arts in 2012. She won a Grammy in 2003. She’s been knighted in France.

She may not have the pop culture pervasiveness of Kelly Clarkson but career-wise, she “arrived” long since.

  • gclay

She’s going to be seen in front of 100 million people this is massive exposure even for the biggest of stars. Good for Phillip and great for her

  • Mason

Yes half of the battle is getting the people that matter to believe in you and the other half is to have the talent and good material to showcase it

  • Corrine43180

I would venture that more Americans are aware of her than are aware of Candace to be honest.

  • macfae

Here’s “Cheers” to Phillip for all he’s accomplished. Lifting a glass filled with bubbling hopes for more good things to come.

    btw, “Home” strikes again !!
I just saw the trailer for the first time at movies over the weekend for the Disney Nature film “Bears” that comes out on Earth Day April 18th.
The song that just keeps on giving. I love it.

  • macfae

I’m so glad you set up the comments so we can collapse the comments within the threads. When I see where they are going, I don’t even want to read through them. It helps keep my blood pressure down.

  • tigervixxxen

    Go Broncos!!

  • tigervixxxen

What’s the thinking when his album might be ready?

  • jpfan2

Nice gig. P2 has been off TV too long. I hope this means the label is excited about his new music.

  • sdmama

I must have weak tear ducts. This song and the image of these cubs make my eyes watery. Looking forward to a new song. Very excited :)

  • macfae

I know. My SIL and I ohhed and awwwed all the way through. Precious cubbies.

  • Madilo

So maybe this new song is what Dave was talking about in his tweet ?

    Dave Eggar @daveeggar
Awesome session with @phillips today. The new record is so cool Y’all won’t know what hit you!

  • maymay

The Super Bowl Pregame ratings(over 30?) seem huge than the Olympics or Oscar Ceremony. I hope the new song is the first single from his second album. Otherwise it is a big waste for such a great promo opportunity.

Besides, It is better that the album is released in May around Idol finale. And the label starts to provide the album preorder during the pregame.
But all that matters is if the single is very commerical. After all, the great promo is a short time thing. Only a great single can run for a long time.

  • Not fit to print

Her lengthy and very respected body of work has earned her the spot. Whatever popularity she gets from this appearance will be totally deserved.

  • Not fit to print

Yes….those of us in the Idol bubble can over-estimate the reach of the show and the post-season impact of our favourite contestants.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

If (a) this is the beginning of the single launch and (b) the NY sessions were the actual recording sessions, not demos, then I’m starting to believe in the legend of the late-spring/early summer album that P2 kept saying he wants.

It’s a very accelerated schedule — which is why I’ve been so skeptical about it — but if Interscope has a clear idea of what it wants and has the right team to get whatever-it-is from P2 efficiently, it’s logistically possible.

Interscope so far gives the impression of responding to the sophomore album problem with an actual plan, rather than with fear, confusion, flailing in multiple conflicting directions, and intervals of apathy. It may or may not turn out to be a good plan, but it could get things done faster. (MercNash similarly gave the “we have a plan” impression with McCreery; it didn’t all come off flawlessly, but a lot of stuff has worked well without the sense of headless chickens circling in panic.)

  • CanadianLady

Perhaps a new rule about deleting posts that are obviously just intended to disparage someone and start a fan war? I so hate those.

  • Anna106

    Is this perfect or what??

  • Incipit

“WWCF peaked too low on AAA to bother trying to cross to larger formats.”

OK. I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention. I didn’t realize WWCF was originally sent only to AAA, not HAC or CHR. I finally became aware that it wasn’t being mentioned much at all since it came out in July, so I wondered what had happened to it as well.

Now I see that wasn’t even one of the Pearson/Holden co-writes, the label didn’t use the second one with Holden, CGW, or the other Wattenberg co-write, GUGD.

Thanks for the updated info, Eilonwy.

  • Tess Herself

Having watched Superbowls since 1967 (weren’t those Packers great) I can tell you that I can’t remember a single performance (other than Janet Jackson’s nipple) in 46 years. The entertainment is nice but the majority of the viewers could give a rat’s ass about anything other than football.

  • standtotheright

Remember, those 30+ ratings are for the last half hour before kickoff. Networks have treated that slot differently over time: some have made it part of the pregame show, some have made it a separate half hour special highlighting the anthem performance, and this year Fox is listing it as part of the overall SB broadcast.
The earlier half hours average a 12+ share, which is still a good-sized audience.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

the majority of the viewers could give a rat’s ass about anything other than football

Which explains why it’s the biggest day of the year for TV advertising and every business publication is loaded with “best and worst of the Super Bowl commercials” on the Monday? Because most people didn’t care about anything but the game?

The Super Bowl is a quasi-holiday because people watch it for a variety of reasons, including many who don’t give a rat’s ass about football and are just there for the beer-cheese dip. If next-to-nobody cared about the hoopla surrounding the game, TPTB would stop paying biggo buckso to stage hoopla and go back to a basic football game with a college marching band at half-time. (While there are a handful of hoopla halftime shows in the 1970s and 1980s, usually Disney-themed, the “tradition” of bringing in big names every year starts in 1991 with NKOTB.)

  • Trina

You dont remember Whitney’s legendary National Anthem?
I go to a huge Super Bowl party every year that I guy I work with throws and most of the people that show up couldnt tell you a thing about the teams that are playing. Its usually some people watching the game and most of the people drinking beers and watching the commercials.

  • Anna106

If anyone hears more specific timing, please let us know. Isn’t the pregame show like 4 hours or something? Also am thrilled that Bruno Mars is the halftime talent!

  • Lily

So excited for Phillip. He always puts on a good show. This is such a great opportunity for more people to get to know him!

  • Louise Kelleher

He did his first album in three weeks ! !
    Producer Gregg Wattenberg

  • Madilo

Do you really guys think it’s a new song from his upcoming album ?
