American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips,  was booked on Live with Kelly on Tuesday–the day the talk show host announced her new co-host, Michael Strahan.  The ratings are in, and they are predictably good.  From a Press Release:

On Tuesday, September 4, 2012, as Kelly Ripa announced Michael Strahan as her new co-host during the inaugural broadcast of the newly-rechristened syndicated talk show, “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” scored an impressive 3.9 Household rating, 13 share in the U.S. Metered Markets, shooting up 44% over the year ago September 2011 time-period average (2.7/9). In addition, the show posted huge year-over-year time-slot gains across all key Women demographics:  W18-34 (+83%), W18-49 (+70%) and W25-54 (+64%).

  • “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” ranked No. 1 in 14 of the Top 15 U.S. markets.
  • Among U.S. Metered Market Households, “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” scored the program’s top-rated telecast since November 2011 (since 11/21/11), equaling its 2nd-highest rating since Regis departed the show.  Additionally, it was the show’s highest rating in 9 years on the first Tuesday after Labor Day – best since 2003.
  • In New York, “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” soared to a winning 6.0/18, jumping 140% from its year-ago September 2011 average and more than doubling its nearest competitor in the time period (+150% over NBC’s “Today Show” = 2.4/7).

Good stuff.

I have only watched AI since the middle of Season 8.  One thing, however, that I noticed with respect to Phillip as opposed to the other contestants I followed in previous seasons is that there were a number of internet posters who remarked either that (1) they had never watched AI before because they thought it was a stupid karaoke show but were watching it in Season 11 because of Phillip; or (2) they were long-time viewers of AI but had never felt the inclination to vote for a contestant until Phillip.  I do think that bodes well for Phillip’s future as an artist.
