American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips’ coronation song, “Home”  has exploded on the iTunes chart, thanks to exposure on the London Olympics within the past two weeks.

The song’s rapid ascent, and the popularity of the 2012 games, has led to pop radio stations across the country to spin it–but in a customized version mixed in with Olympic highlights.

At pop station Z100 in New York City, their version is garnering such strong audience reaction, it is in rotation in all dayparts, according to industry website FMBQ.

“Home” will get one last bit of exposure during the closing ceremonies on Sunday, according to the NBC executive responsible for championing “Home” at the network. The question is, will pop and HAC stations continue to spin it after the games are over?

Obviously a song that doesn’t have near the audience impressions of a top CHR hit such as Whistle and Call Me Maybe are not going to stay at #1 on iTunes without massive exposure. Home was doing well to even have 80 or so on iTunes as it’s natural resting place. Most Idol songs fall out of the top 1000 completely after the initial release/exposure/ect.

I’m not a fan of the Olympic remix and I’m not sure it it helps the song or not.    But we shall see.   Also, don’t forget Phillip is currently singing HOME on the IDOL tour so we can attribute at least some of those download numbers (prior to the Olympics) to people watching the peformance and purchasing it.   That’s probably what helped it stay in the 80s plus the small amount of radio play it was getting before the GAMES.

I hope stations start playing the regular version.   Then it will have a chance to stick around like TOML.  I like the song.    I would think the Radio Disney would be spinning the crap out of this song.  US Women’s (really girls) Gymastics is popular with a lot of kids.

I don’t mind this remix at all. It reminds me of some others from the past but they were mostly from movies. Titanic and Jerry McGuire come to mind. Nothing but a novelty, but I hope it means good things for the song itself! Go, Phillip! Ride this wave as long as you can!
