Phillip Phillips’ “Home” Now the Best Selling American Idol Single Ever

Phillip Phillips’ smash hit coronation song, “Home” is now the best selling single from an American Idol alum ever! Yahoo Music has the details

Phillip Phillips’ “Home” this week surpasses Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” to become the best-selling song ever released by an American Idol alumnus. “Home” has sold 4,262,000 digital copies. “Stronger” has sold 4,245,000.

“Stronger” wore the Idol sales crown for about eight months. It surpassed Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” on July 1, 2012. Underwood’s smash held the title for nearly five years. It surpassed Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” on Aug. 19, 2007.

Although Phillip has surpassed Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger,” the original flavah Idol still has four songs among the top 10 Idol best-sellers to date.

Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” is now in third place, with sales of 3,735,000. “No Air” by Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown is in fourth place, with sales of 3,531,000.

Here’s an interesting tidbit.

While “Home” has drawn frequent comparisons to Mumford & Sons, it has done better than any of that British group’s hits. Mumford & Sons’ best-selling song is “Little Lion Man” (2,326,000). Its highest-charting hit is “I Will Wait” (#12).

Maybe that’s why members of the band have dished a little snark over Phillips’ success.

Phillips’ album, The World from the Side of the Moon, has broke a little record too.

Phillips’ debut album, The World From The Side Of The Moon, has sold 792K copies. It has spent seven weeks in the top 10 on The Billboard 200. It’s the first debut album by an Idol winner to log seven or more weeks in the top 10 since Underwood’s Some Hearts spent 30 weeks in the top 10 from 2005 to 2007.

Typo mj: “Home” is not the best selling single from an American Idol alum ever!

  • Brittany Keener

Remember when……Phillip said this was NOT going to be his single?

    Sorry, I had to.

  • Brittany Keener

    Also, I should say….

Major props to the songwriters. I doubt they ever dreamed of writing such a big hit.

And even more props to Phillip’s promoters and anyone responsible for getting that song tagged to so many major events/promos/movies/companies/etc. That is how you do your job.

  • Sunny Mc

I know right! Sorry P2, not going to be able to forget you dissing the best coronation song ever given to an idol.

  • Angie

Why can’t The Voice follow the same strategy for their artists? Wasn’t the Olympics on NBC.

  • Derrick Johnson

The whole story with that was the person in the Olympics were looking for a song for gymnastics and his daughter worked on American Idol and liked the song told him about the song and he thought it was the perfect song

  • Jae

    Yay for Phillip!

  • abbysee

Congrats to Phillip on his success! I knew it was a great song and he was the right guy to bring it to life. Even if he didn’t know it then. Kismet!

Also congrats to the idol franchise, who continue to at least give their winners and other alumni a great launching pad. Nobody does it better.

  • jpfan2

Huh? Home is the best single from an American Idol alum ever! Unless you mean it was outsold (so far) by CMM done by an CI alum.
I think it’s very funny that the song has sold more than any M&S single to date also. I knew when I heard P2 do it on Idol that this was a great match of song and singer. The amount of emotion P2 put into the song made it something special from day one. Still even great songs don’t always do this well. So well deserved success to both singer and songwriters here.

I guess WGWG5 didn’t destroy the franchise as predicted. ;)

  • TaylorKathryn

Phillip has always said Home is a great song. Whether or not he originally wanted the song as his single, he’s never dissed it.

    Congratulations, Phil! :)

  • jpfan2

While I give props to the promoters of Home for getting great promo etc. I don’t think it’s because they worked harder than for other Idols. Home just works very well for lots of events, ads, etc. If it didn’t, an army of folks working 24/7 couldn’t do much with it.

  • blackberryharvest

Not bad for a guy who was supposed to bomb harder than Lee :)

  • Ann Gardner

Congrats to Phillip, Drew, and Greg and all those that made “Home” possible. I know this song will resonate a long time. It is perfect for many of life’s moments. It is an “idol” win.

  • mtlfan2

Congrats Philip!! Glad to see a WGWG representing!
This will float his boat for a long time..

  • Hazehel

I knew when I heard P2 do it on Idol that this was a great match of song and singer. The amount of emotion P2 put into the song made it something special from day one.

There is something to be said that Phillip Phillips is a big part of the success of the song. His voice simply fits the song to a T. Although people said that other idols would have done just as well if they had got this song, I actually heard very few decent covers of the song. For example the one by Angela Miller is actually rather poor.

  • LeoCS

The new millionaire Greg Holden is laughing all the way to the bank.

  • Madilo

how come “american” it says ? do you have someone else ?

  • Hazehel

The song still needs to conquer the world, I don’t think it’s even been released in the UK yet. They should try and see if they can place the song with an advert for John Lewis (a department store in the UK), it’ll be a great fit. Quite a few song used for John Lewis adverts have become hits,

  • Miz

    Congrats to Phillip.

  • Reflects On Life

Makes me feel sad for the rest.

  • jpfan2

Supposedly the song is being released in the UK on 6/3. I wonder if it’ll do do well outside the US/Canada.

  • standtotheright

Huh? Home is the best single from an American Idol alum ever!

I’m assuming the typo was in the OP: “not” instead of “now.” Correct now, at any rate.

  • Emmuzka

I wonder if Philip “It won’t be my album single” Phillips hates to perform it.

  • girlygirl

Congrats to Phillip. This is a very nice achievement.

  • Face

i’m wondering if you mean, that while its the best selling single in the US from an AI alum… that another song by a different alum (i imagine one of Kelly’s many hit singles) is the biggest seller globally?

  • girlygirl

not to mention the other co-writer, Drew (ahh…I’m blanking on his last name)

  • girlygirl

    Huh? Yes it is

  • irockhard

I don’t recall P2 actually dissing the song itself. He just said that he doesn’t write songs like Home.

  • ReginaFilange

I doubt he got a very good contract for the single. Especially since the last few winners’ first singles bombed so incredibly hard.

Let’s hope on of the AI12 ladies gets an equally catchy song and the right marketing to match.

  • jcabby

Congrats to Phillip! Loved “Home” the first time I heard him sing it. Exceptional song.

He certainly proved wrong the naysayers.

Props to Jimmy Iovine and his crew. They did a heck of a job for the previous two idol winners.

  • MV007

But the song has done so well that even if he gets a small percentage it will still be a lot. You might be right that it wasn’t as much as in the past but he’s probably still making a good chunk off of it. Not to mention the ancillary benefit of having that monster of a song boost his album sales. Because I’m guessing he’d be looking at Lee DeWyze/Kris Allen type numbers if he didn’t have “Home”

  • MV007

Well he was given a great song. I think Lee could have done “Home” justice too. Why can’t people love Philip and still recognize that he was handed a great song on a silver platter that no other idol has had?

  • MV007

And what people forget is that the guy who picked the song picked it because of the song’s structure. There were instrumental interludes that made it perfect for the kinds of video packages they were going to need.

  • MV007

Some would argue that saying you don’t want it as a single is a diss.

  • Madilo

Congrats to Phillip, well done !
wishing him many more hits of singles and albums

  • usedtobelucy

Congrats, PhilPhil. And many more (though that will be harder, of course. … gotta keep getting great songs that fit the zeitgeist … not so easy to do. )

On a related topic — noting that JPL’s (and his singing partner’s) brains were on display last night on The Voice as he mentioned that Midas Whale’s genre was “Mumford and Sons.” heh

  • Alexandre Oliveira

wow, a lot of hate here haha I really didn’t like Phillip on his run on Idol, but I love Home and I’m glad for him

  • almondean88

Hurray for WGWGs! I am so delighted with P2’s success as the last in a string of incredibly talented Idol winners who just happen to be male and sometimes play guitars (as well as many other instruments) These guys have taken a ration of crap from the media, critics, and blogs. The Idol machine has done everything possible to discredit and ignore them. The WGWG label has been used to group together very individual performers. I’m over the moon that P2 has had a huge hit with his coronation single. I only wish my own favorite Idol winner had the luck to get such a great coronation song. But hurray for P2’s success and I hope he joins Kelly & Carrie in the pantheon of super successful Idol winners. It will be hard to keep using that “WGWG” with P2’s success. And yes, I’m all for the girls this year. They are a very talented group this year.

  • Madilo

are you girlygirltoo or what ?

  • Le Viet Anh Nghi

Hey guys, MJ made a typo 6 hours ago. In the original text, in place of “now” was “not”, which made the whole setence sounds completely contradictory to the title of the post.

Of course it IS the best selling single from an AL alum in the states.

(i’m pretty sure WW, stronger is a bigger hit)

  • TheOther

The Legacy of Season 11 and the WGWG. I think there’s great irony that the best selling Idol song of all time came from the season that took a hit in ratings in face of other reality TV singing competitions. It was also the first time a winner missed 6 weeks of the initial promo (because of Phillip’s surgery). It will be interesting to see what happens with Home, since it is still charting and selling. It’s one of those songs that I can see resurfacing.

  • maymay

Home is now the best selling American Idol single. A moment like this is incredible. Just like Helen`s face, after the London Olympics, Phillip`s Home launched a thousand radios and burnt the endless stigma of American Idol.

Home isn`t the big radio or YouTube song but it has become a great anthem.
    1.TV show
American Idol, The Big Loser, America`s Got Talent, Extreme Makeover.

The London Olympics, MLB All Star Game, NBA All Star Game, NASCAR Sprint Awards.

Trouble With The Curve, Parental Guidance.

American Family Insurance, Vizio, Tim Hortons.

95.5 PLJ`s Sandy MIX, MTV`s Restore The Shore, CNN`s Heroes.

The person who was in charge of Olympic coverage was watching American Idol and heard Home, and thought that would be a good song for the coverage. Independently, his daughter was asked by somebody on AI if she knew who is doing Olympic coverage programming, and she said, yes, my dad. That’s what I read how the deal was struck.

It is not like some show not doing enough to sell whatever the song. Jimmy had this incredible eyes for good songs that would attract people and make them want to use it for something else. Greg submitted the song to Jimmy in hope that he would use it for the show, and Jimmy thought that would be good for Phillip, and managed to convince him to sing it. (Phillip said he gave up on singing his own song because he ran out of time to arrange it for 1.5 min, and sang Home instead.)

So, when Jimmy managed to find Home and made Phillip sing it, I think that was the moment that everything was set in motion.

Voice need Jimmy or somebody to find a great song. Or, hire Greg and don’t let him out until he produces some songs.

  • Anny_nanny

Drew gave Jimmy this song, not Greg. Greg tried to sing it himself during his tour, but I think he is very grateful to the co-author of that he suggested that song for AI.
We have the story where all of the kinks in their places, and the gears don’t stop spinning a year. Good job.

  • SnowFairy444

Congratulations to Philip and to ALL the WGWG. You rock!

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Phillip`s Home launched a thousand radios and burnt the endless stigma of American Idol.”

Nope. Mainstream critical and commercial successes like Kelly, Carrie and Daughtry have “burnt the endless stigma of American Idol”.

  • SnowFairy444

The songwriters hit the jackpot and well deserved, excellent song.
