It’s viral people it’s crazy! Phillip Phililp’s “Home” is not only the Women’s Gymanastic’s Olympic theme song, but it’s featured in the trailer for the new Clint Eastwood movie Trouble With The Curve.  Yep.  The trailer. Coming to a TV NEAR YOU when movie promo begins in a few weeks. The film opens on September 28th.

Along with Clint Eastwood, the movie stars Amy AdamsJustin TimberlakeJohn Goodman and Robert Patrick.

Here’s a description of the plot:

Robert Lorenz’s Trouble with the Curve, from a script by Randy Brown, focuses on Clint Eastwood as Gus, an aging Atlanta Braves scout with vision problems whose daughter, Mickey (Adams), reluctantly agrees to be his eyes on a crucial recruiting trip. “They’re having trouble communicating. They always have, and now they’ve come to a point in the relationship where it’s either going to change or it’s not. He needs a little help, and she decides it’s worth the effort.” If you’ve seen Moneyball, he’s the kind of old school scout who picks based on instinct and observation. One friend is Johnny (Timberlake), a scout from a rival team who has a lot of loyalty to Gus.

“Home” is the little train that could!  Once again–kudos to the team responsible for “Home” promo! Ya’ll deserve a raise.

I do wonder what all this success in terms of Phillip getting a “real” single released before his album drops. If “Home” is still chugging along in September and October, will Interscope just keep riding it, or will they release something actually written by P2 that would be closer to how he sees himself as a musician?

The exact timing’s what gets kind of dicey… If (big, big, BIG “if”) Home gets on a trajectory to peak in the top 5 of either HAC or CHR in December or later, I can’t imagine Interscope risking cannibalizing that in order to release a single that’s closer to the artist’s vision.

If that happens, then P2′s management should be trying to get him on night-time shows where he’ll have a chance to perform more than one song (I remember Cook doing SNL and Jimmy Kimmel around the time DCTR was released), which would let him introduce listeners to his own sound while still performing his big hit. (No, Cook didn’t do TOML on those shows. But TOML was in the past by then, as the peak timing was different, so it was LO plus other song(s) from the album.) Home’s becoming pervasive enough that I don’t think the big talk shows are a huge stretch goal if the song also turns into a radio hit, though it’s not easy to get a slot on these shows.

If Home is looking to peak only a couple weeks before the album release, I’d kinda expect the second single to be released with the album drop. Talk shows won’t have P2 on twice in a month, and the PR conventionally needs to center around the album drop. But there, we’re getting into the label and management frantically waving cell phones and calendars at one another, trying to figure exactly what will work to maximize exposure.

I think Interscope is going to be pushing “Home” for a while because they’ll want to see if they can make the song happen on the radio. It’s far from a typical coronation song that has no bearing on the artist’s career going forward, like a “No Boundaries” or “Inside Your Heaven”. The fear has to be that if “Home” can’t get a foothold on radio that no other song of Phillip’s will do any better. There are only so many Olympic/movie trailer/commercial placements out there and they realistically can’t expect to be able to get all of P2′s songs advertised that way.

Very good points DMK. I think Home is just beginning not peaking. The label needs to focus on it. I could see the song in line for a Grammy nod as Song of the Year even.

I agree. And with what Home sold last week, I wonder if radio will finally come on board. It’s getting ridiculous now. Seriously.

“Home” does have that SofY quality but Mumford & Sons just released a song this week and I doubt you’ll get two folk-influenced songs nominated in that category.  I think “Home” would have to be really huge like a “Before He Cheats” or “Stronger”, for Grammy to even consider a SotY nomination, just because of the Idol stigma and SotY being one of the big categories. With other songs that aren’t Idol related they can get that nomination sometimes if they are critically acclaimed enough even though they weren’t huge hits. But for an Idol the bar is higher in the major categories.

I agree 100%.  The song has so much potential. It would be nice if CHR would get on board the way HAC has so far.  Hopefully, patience will be a virtue here.

The Grammys is not as out of reach it is may sound. The song writer, Greg Holden was asked to perform it with the Grammy committee. Phillip was in the Mid-West with the Idol tour at the time. Both Greg and The Grammys acknowledged that it was Phillip Phillip’s version of Home. They did not mention American Idol.

Fantastic! Great.  That song is one heck of a money maker.

Never would have thought it in a million years when I heard it the first time.  Granted it was a great song and Phillip did an awesome job with it, but it’s transcended to nearly epic.
