American Idol Season 11 winner, Phillip Phillips announces his new single, “Raging Fire.” I’m sure more details will be forthcoming.

Cool album art. Is this for his next album? That was quick for an Idol. Too many Idols wait too long between albums.

Do we know anything about this new single?

  • LongKissGoodnight

The picture (that has the name of the single on it) is supposed to go with the single on varies sites that handle digital distribution.

  • CanadianLady

    Cool art. Should stand out.

  • TheOther

Raging Fire. If this was the song they were going to premiere at the Super Bowl, it’s probably an up beat, up tempo song. If the CD has a May release, it will be 18 mos since the TWFTSOTM. It will be one of the shortest for an Idol winner. Similar to Kelly Clarkson. I think the 2.5 yrs between releases hurt several Idol alums.

  • maymay

I guess Phillip will perform on Idol next Thursday. It seems like Phillip will release his new album in May. So, again, I guess he will perform on Idol finale too, maybe featuring some contestant.

So Raging Fire could be sent to HAC and Pop at almost the same time due to new album in May with more airplay and more debut week sales.

I’m very curious to hear the new single and what direction he’s going this time. Not a fan of the folksy/Mumford sound, so hopefully it’s different than that. As for the single cover art, it’s hideous, lol, but I’m a Graphic Designer by trade so I’m a little harder to please. Besides, it’s just the single cover. (For the record, I’m not too pleased with James’ Celebrate album cover either, but it’s the music that counts.)

  • Madilo

    #RagingFire :)

  • Trina

I absolutely love the cover art. Really great that hes getting new music out so soon..Interscope is smart to capitalize on his debut album era success sooner than later..

  • Tay96

SO ready for new Phillip music, I can’t wait. :) Love the cover art and song title.

  • Anna106

The cover art is interesting…I actually looked at it several times before I saw the faces!

  • girlygirl

The cover art is interesting but it is also totally different from the art they used for his first album and 2 singles, so it could confuse people as to what direction his music is headed in. I’m interested to hear what this single sounds like — if it is close to the sound of “Home” and “GoneGoneGone” or far removed from it?

Looks like it will be 18 months between albums, which is relatively quick.

  • mel432

That is really fast, unlike Cook Kris and Adam’s second albums, which were 2 1/2 years after their first. Let’s see if Phillip gets better promo than the three boys too.

  • justmefornow

The confusion of music styles wouldn’t be the main issue for me. It’s the not identifying actually who or what it is.

From a graphic design point of view they didn’t take into consideration the size at which it would be mostly viewed. As a digital single it will be small, almost thumbnail size for the most part, on itunes and similar sites. (Look at it on MJ’s main page of thread topics) You can’t make out the artist’s name or the title, not enough contrast, too small font, etc., much less the image of the artist. What works as “artistic” on a traditional LP sized cover, doesn’t on a small single cover.

Just my graphic designer 2 cents, lol.

  • Madilo

I don’t know anything about graphic design so i believe you but i think the cover is interesting and it makes you guess imo.

  • Madilo

Why did they wait that long to release their albums ?
Was it due to artistic differences i read here or what ?

  • Madilo

Do you think it’s a co-write or Phillips’ only ?

  • justmefornow

Well, I’ll give you that, it does make you guess, lol. Really, as long as the song is catchy for radio, that’s all that matters.

  • Madilo

“Not a fan of the folksy/Mumford sound, so hopefully it’s different than that.”
He said in his Fusetv interview that it’ll be more rock and darker too, so you’ll be “satisfied” imo.

  • justmefornow

    Sounds good.

  • mel432

Probably label related. All three boys got screwed around by RCA.

  • mel432

I’m surprised they didn’t release a third single from his first album. Usually when they continue to get radio and sell, they keep releasing another one.

  • Mia

His touring schedule for 2013 started in Jan 2013 with only a 1 month forced health break in June and a 3 week break in October/November.
His last concert with John Mayer was on Dec 17th.
A month later in mid January , he is in studio in NY.
6 weeks later, he is putting finishing touches to his album, in between performing at the Superbowl.
When did he find the time to write the songs so good that they are in the album right away ! A single so good that the label has no hesitation putting it out !
I am so impressed by his drive.
If things don’t work out it will not be because he did not give it his best shot.

  • LongKissGoodnight

I think the co-write is the best case scenario.
And I would not be surprised if it was written by someone more established all together.

  • Mia

Sometimes singles are placeholders to keep the artist’s name in public consciousness while the artist is working towards next release. P2 works fast, the release is round the corner, the placeholder was not necessary.

  • Jason Gorny

I’m really hoping the odds are in his favor to do well. He has good momentum going into this new era.

  • BluSky

I don’t think Phillip’s original style was any close to “folksy/Mumford sound”… He got stuck with it only because of Home. It’s a great successful song and it helped Phillip a lot, and i am quite happy about that. But because of Home Phillip made his first album more folksy to keep it organic enough.
So now I am happy that he is finally free from folk and moving toward who he really is as a musician. Can’t wait to hear the song. And can’t wait to see him in concert again!!

  • BluSky

there was no announcement whatsoever about his Idol performance… or was there any?

  • Madilo

“by somewhere more established all together.”

what do you mean by this, did you mean “someone” more established than the writers he got on his first album ?

  • Madilo

Hoping for the best for my boy Phillips :)

  • BluSky

He’s extremely hardworking! It’s great that he does what he loves and we can enjoy his music :)
He says that he always writes music, even on the road, so I am not surprised that he had enough material for the new album.
He wants to continue touring in the summer, so he needs new music/new album for that. It has to come out in May! :)

  • BluSky

Me too, didn’t get it until someone pointed out :)

  • LongKissGoodnight

I meant someone more established as songwriter/hitmaker.

  • standtotheright

I agree about the contrast issue, especially for the title, but suspect they are simply trying to grab fans who will look at that image and think Hunger Games/Divergent/other-YA-novel-now-blockbuster-movie-soundtrack-song. (That was my first impression when I saw the thumbnail.) They seem to book a lot of AAA artists for those collections, so it would be good targeting.

  • girlygirl

I say this all the time. Phillip is not a pop artist. His single will likely not be sent to CHR radio unless/until it does well in AAA &/or HAC format.

  • Madilo

I don’t see something official about Phillips’ performance on Idol, i think maymay is just speculating.

  • Madilo

Oh good, i was like ok my english is not that far i need an explanation lol

  • Mia

He just answered that. He co wrote it with the Todd and Derek who wrote Gone X3

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Oh cool!
    Thank you for update. %))

  • Madilo

    Great :)
What do you think about that ?

  • Mia

People like to lump Gone 3 and home together as folk but as P2 has pointed out several times in the interviews in the past, Gone 3 is not folk. It has no banjo and it has a full set of drums. What it also has is an absolutely catchy chorus. P2 got the song, learned it, recorded it in 1 day and what we got was a multi-format hit.

Now imagine the same team cooking up another song with P2′s input- minus 1 day to learn and record. I think if “Raging Fire” is as good as GoneX3- we have a hit on our hands.

  • LongKissGoodnight

While personally I very much enjoy Phillip’s songwriting style (being a fan and all), it is too jazzy/offbeat for modern commercial radio. So if the goal is to put out a slick earwormy single with potential, I would not expect it to be written without some outside help from more experienced hitmakers.
GGG was a good song that did it’s job. Fingers crossed “Raging Fire” is going to do the same.
    I am cautiously optimistic.

  • Madilo

That is encouraging and optimistic, great :)

  • girlygirl

There are lots of folk-rock songs that do not use banjo and that have full drums on them. Likewise, there are lots of songs with banjo on them that are not folk or folk-rock. Instrumentation does not necessarily determine genre or style of the song.

IMO, GGG and Home are both folk/alt rock songs.

  • CanadianLady

But you got the “I was like” dead on! :)

  • Mia

    True.

  • Madilo

ha ! My english sucks and i try my best for you (readers) to understand lol.

  • standtotheright

They did. WWCF was released to AAA. (Which is the right format for him.) It didn’t peak high enough to justify crossing it to HAC.

  • jayidrocks

Todd and Derek also wrote GUGD ( together with Phillip). So the new song could also have more this style.

  • jayidrocks

I think, WWCF was a placeholder for Phillips home format AAA. It was never meant for HAC. (I remember GGG was released on AAA and HAC the same time and then crossed over to POP, after it reached #1 on AAA and #5 on HAC.)
There was also barely any promo for this song and the video came out late ( shortly before the re-release of his album with some live tracks).
Because the audio of this video also was a live-version instead of the recorded version, I think the video should only promote the new album version and not the song itsself.

  • CanadianLady

Well, I’d say you do really good!

  • Mason

Yes! Something to look forward to next week!

  • Tay96

Phillip said in an interview this morning that Raging Fire was a love song and it’s similar to Gone, Gone, Gone but it’s also heavier.

  • Madilo

I should be happy then, excited to hear it .
