If Phillip Phillips makes the live shows, he will win. He is cute enough, he plays the guitar, he is from the south, and he puts his own spin on songs which will get him credit as “artistic”. I think he does have a good voice, he reminds me a lot of Dave Matthews. I can’t say I will be happy if he makes the show, but I think as far as wgwg go he is pretty good.

I can’t say I’m really crazy about this guy but the teen and tween girls will probably go nuts over him.  lol I agree that he does have that certain Dave Matthews quality about him.

  • Anonymous

We didn’t have anybody like him win last year, so I doubt it. He is more like a Paul/Lee/Kris/Cook hybrid. If the whole wgwg memo was true, Paul would have won last year. I don’t think Scotty is anything like him or Cook/Kris/Lee.

  • larc

Is it too much to expect just a tiny hint of originality?  He sounds like too many other singers.  Generic.

  • Anonymous

If he does make it to the lives, they will probably just bus him like they did with Tim Halperin.

  • Anonymous

Yes he’s handsome, but his voice is too weak and I don’t think TPTB will support him at all. If he makes it to the live shows, he will probably end up like Paul McDonald

  • Anonymous

Great guitar skills.  He just needs to learn not to sing like he’s constipated (see audition preview).

If he does something interesting on the show, I could like him.  I’m not ruling him out just because of the WGWG label tagged on him.

  • Blower

Some teen gonna love him, some cougar gonna love him if he has ‘nice’ personality. He will end up far..

  • Anonymous

If they put him through the live shows, I actually think he would make it further than Paul, especially if he’s the only “rock guy”. Paul couldn’t sing cover songs, this guy seems to be able to pull them off. I’ll admit, I kinda liked his “lollipop/lose-yourself” cover, even though I’m not too crazy about his voice. He tends to yell too much IMO.

I was not impressed with his Idol audition. Am I missing something here?

  • Anonymous

He will have to fight for the “rocky guy” spot with Colton Dixon, lol.

  • GS61

This guy is no “rock guy” lol. Not even close. He’s a non-country Scotty; higher voice, less of a twang, – right down to the plaid shirt.
The voting demographic will eat him up!

  • Mateja Praznik

He is purrr-fect. Exactly what the viewers like.

  • Anonymous

He looks kinda silly in the audition but he is cute, wears plaid, plays guitar, has a penis, looks kinda like Scotty, bland and not so good voice – hmmm…..yep, he’s our winner for season 11!  No need to watch.

  • V Jemmy

    Phillip…. Phillips.

Wow, his parents were sure creative!  Reminds me of all the John Johnsons I grew up with.

  • bigd13

Scotty is still white and plays guitar, the only difference is he does country music. Besides doing country music, he’s exactly like all the rest of them.

  • Anonymous

LOL First, that name?! Honestly, his audition clip felt like a SNL skit mocking the type of contestants that win these shows. He reminds me of Lee but much worse of a singer.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

New VFTW pick for WGWG 5 I’m sure.

  • http://twitter.com/efurman Ethan Furman

they cannot put any young wgwg in the top 13 ! I think it is a serious problem that the same type of contestant keeps winning. Look at what the X-factor did, they only had Josh Krajick, who was basically lee dewyze’s older brother, thank god he didnt win or it would have been very embarrassing for x factor to continue the trend.

I don’t get the hatred for white guys who play guitars. But with that said, I’m not hearing anything special here. Maybe it’s the quality of the videos.

  • Anonymous

Lol singing country music makes a huge difference. He also isn’t a twenty something like them.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t count Scotty as Wgwg number 4.

  • Anonymous

Just because Scotty is a white guy with a guitar doesn’t mean he is a white guy with a guitar?

  • http://twitter.com/ScottyHaleyFan Maria Romeo

    meh

  • Blower

Lol Scotty as a WGWG is fact. But I’m curious why some people look WGWG as a bad label for their favorite contestant? In fact not all wgwg is a bad singer. They are just white guy and playing guitar.. not terrible singer who has a p**is. lol.

  • Kylee

I personally remember before Scotty came around that a “WGWG” was also a soft rocker, and wasn’t just the literal title.

  • http://twitter.com/efurman Ethan Furman

its not that a WGWG is bad , its a problem the same type has won the last four years

  • Tera2

I dislike this Phillip guy’s idol audition, and his voice is too deep and gruff.  And I didn’t care much for his other videos.  I saw spoilers that Scott Dangerfield is back this season.  I’d rather Scott make it through – he has a deep voice but its clear and not gruff, and he seems versatile and does pop/soul and has a voice for pop-rock too.

God, ENOUGH with the WGWGs. I thought Idol was looking for a superstar. WGWGs are sooo 2008. >:-/

Which is why one didn’t win Season 10 :)

  • Kesia Monteith

    Gag me.

Thanks for all the spoilers, gangreen. I love spoilers and I love that you’ve collected them together with lots of examples of their work so we can get a feel for what kind of artist they will be.

Phillip Phillips doesn’t seem like my cuppa, but his name reminds me of Major Major Major Major from Catch-22.

  • getgetaway

Unless the make-up of the AI voting audience has changed drastically, I can see this guy getting in – right down to the prerequisite plaid shirt and guitar.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

I didn’t care for Phillip’s voice at all.

I think he is really talented. First thought was Dave Matthews….and I love Dave Matthews. : )

looks NOTHING like Scotty….other than a plaid shirt( that didn’t fit him right)
    & he sounds like he’s in pain…..

    they found one last year!!!!

I think if PhilPhil had been on the X Factor, he would be a millionaire now.  They saved him for last, and rightly so.  He closed an entertaining show with a high voltage segment that viewers will remember.

  • Karen C

I think he’s ok. I like his arrangements, and he does remind me a bit of Dave Matthews.  If he does make it on the show, he might do well, but I don’t think he’s guaranteed a win just because he’s wgwg.   Depends on how he does and how popular he is, as with everyone else.

Phillip Phillips isn’t that good.  He swallows his words and I’m not fond of his tone.  I can’t even begin to express how tired I am with the WGWG meme around here.  Thousands upon thousands of young men play guitar (some well, some not).  Thousands sing (some well, some not).  Why is it so terrible if someone is talented, sings and plays guitar that that person might win.  I’m guessing that a majority of the idols finishing in the top 5 or 6 for each season play some sort of an instrument — most probably the guitar.  We’ve had black males and females playing the guitar and piano; we’ve had hispanic contestants playing guitar and piano. We’ve had harmonicas, ukeles and a melodian and a standup bass.  And out there in the real world, a musician who can also sing is a generally considered a positive, not a negative — Dollie Parton, John Mayer, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Gavin Degraw, Jason Mraz, Billy Joe Armstrong, Jewel, Flea with the Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney, Joan Jett, Keith Urban, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley, John Lee Hooker, even Taylor Swift.  Not a terrible legacy.  They’re popular.  Many people like that kind of music.
I realize that the last 3 winners have been male and white (no matter the uproar over Scotty’s 25% Puerto Rican (which makes me Native American by the way — too bad the scholarship committee didn’t think so) and I would love to see that change, but why take away their instruments.  I don’t get it.  Even Beiber plays the drums.

    Philip2s is okayable but i’m still 4 Colton! ;)

I like his guitar playing better than his vocals, which is exactly how I felt about Casey James during the show. (Though, I do like Casey’s single!)

  • LVD

I like his guitar playing better than his vocals, which is exactly how I felt about Casey James during the show. (Though, I do like Casey’s single!)

I watched this episode last night, I ve seen a few tweets that said this guy reminded them of Casey, but Casey is a much better singer then this guy. He reminds me much more of Lee then Casey in style, although Lee is also a better singer then this guy. It was strange it almost seemed like he was making up the grit, as if it isn’t natural to him or something, for the the type of voice he has I dont think his tone is good. But who knows first auditions isn’t always representative.

  • BonnieDee

I really like his edgy voice and of course he’s great on guitar.  He’s one of my personal frontrunners along with Elise Testone and Shannon McGrane.

  • Nele621

He’s not even as good as Lee. Far, far below Cook and Kris in both looks and vocals.
