Brian Mansfield over at Idol Chatter has the details on Phil Stacey’s new record deal with Christan Label, Reunion Records (they’re under the Sony umbrella, so major label for Phil–good going!).

The deal is so new–he just signed in the label’s Franklin Tennessee offices yesterday–there’s no set date on when his debut record will be released. Phil hopes to have an album out by early summer.

Phil says, “Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been in the studio all of one day at this point. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got a couple songs with the basic tracks on it.” With the new deal signed he’ll be back in the studio tomorrow.

Phil has written and co-written several songs for the album, including a collaboration with Cindy Morgan and Jeremy Bose called “One”. Another tune likely to make the album is “With All My Heart” by Christian singer-songwriter Bebo Norman.

He’ll also be writing with Season 6 cast mate Chris Sligh. The two just finished a song yesterday called “Light of the World.”

Phil, a devout Christian, comes from a family of ministers, and has sung gospel music all his life. A move to a Christian label is a natural fit for him.

After the jump, check out Phil performing “Hold Me Jesus”–a song he used as a “warm-up prayer” before he performed on Idol–at the Z883 studios in Orlando, FL.

Is this the same place the Chris Sligh is signed to?

Well, I sometimes listen to the Christian channel, so I won’t lose listening to Phil’s voice completely…

Happy for Phil, sad for me.

Awww…I love this song. Rich Mullins was an awesome artist.

I think Phil will fit the Christian label quite well. He reminds me a lot of Michael English. Hopefully, his works out well.

t2, Chris Sligh is signed with Brash Records, which I believe is an independent label. And you don’t have to be sad,:-) Just tune in to the Christian channel more often, and to your local station once he releases a single. There are other youtube videos of him singing Christian music: 3 of them are from his dad’s church. Check out the hendersonvillecog (Church of God) account. He was leading worship instead of his brother, Keith, on that day, as Keith was sick. The whole family, in fact, is into music and singing. Kendra, his wife, sings in the choir, and his sister-in-law, Amanda, sings lead in some of the videos. Keith, I believe, leads the choir and sings as well. Phil, his brother and sister used to sing years ago as the Stacey Trio. I agree, Gwendolyn, that Christian music will fit him well. He has done it from a child. In fact, I think there is also a youtube video out there of him singing Michael English’s “In Christ Alone.” Phil posted in a blog on his myspace that he, Keith, and Amanda, had a part in the video game “The Perfect Match” for the Xbox Live. Keith was apparently the voice-over engineer and sound designer. And Phil left this on his Twitter account not long ago:

PhilStacey Has officially joined the Sony family by signing with Provident/Reunion Records… Stay tuned for release date!!!

All I know is that I hope he finds his place somewhere because his voice is beautiful.

Yep. That is an interesting turn of events. I can’t think of many Idols that have gotten signed by Sony after initially being passed over (Jennifer Hudson is the other notable exception). There are some big names in the Christian music biz on that label.

I think this might be a better fit for Phil and I wish him all the luck (but please shave off the beard).

  • abbysee

but please shave off the beard).

Amen. Sorta reminded me of a bald caveman.

  • IdolFanatic

I’m so happy for Phil! His country album is excellent and it’s a shame that it didn’t sell better. I’m not going to say that Christian music will be a BETTER fit, but I think it will be just as good a fit as country, but hopefully this album will sell better. He has a good country tone to his voice, so he’ll always be a country singer no matter what he does. But country music and Christian often overlap anyway.

Another Idol that got dropped by a major label and picked up by another major label.

  • idolbeat

Phil, you rock! I love you country and I love you Christian. Keep on bringing it!

  • primeminister

That was a lovely rendition of “Hold Me Jesus.” I wish Phil all the best–hope he puts out a good album! (and yay for Bebo Norman!)

Phil does shave every so often, as a recent post on Twitter will show, lol. But he does let the beard grow every so often, and I think most of his phans love him with it. When he has his duties in the Navy Reserve, he will shave as well. And as far as being dropped, the Everday Christian on-line publication ( http://everydaychristian.com/leisure/story/253/ )states that “He left Lyric Street, which released his first album, to join Sonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Reunion Records to cut a contemporary Christian album.” He was not dropped. With all due respect to them and the Philnatics’ appreciation for having signed him, they have not supported him as well. He has great songs on his cd, which could have done well, and a patriotic song, “Old Glory,” which received very little airplay. Phil has years of experience singing country, Gospel, and rock. He has been at the Grand Ole Opry, sung at Carnegie Hall and is on the Young People’s Chorus of New York City’s holiday cd. He can sing the phone book. But I, too, am looking forward to him doing music which he has grown up with.

When did Phil start looking like Rob Reiner?

  • Lu

I always loved Phil’s voice but I didn’t even recognize him in this pic. Phil, lose the beard and wear a hat! :)

  • itsalleternal

He is NOT the first past Idol contestant on Provident Music Group, as he joins Brooke Barrettsmith.

  • CFIdolsfan

I, for one, love a little scruff or beard on Phil. He has been wearing either one since he left Idol. He couldn’t wear them during Idol because he was on active duty with the Navy. Even now, when he fulfills his commitment as a reservist, he will shave. Lyric Street discouraged him from wearing hats. I personally hope he doesn’t change. The pic below is my favorite of him, with a little scruff. But for me, what is really the attactive part, is the kind of man that he is. Go, Phil!

  • philliegirl

COngratulation to Phil. He is one of those artists that is capable of singing numerous genres. I heard him sing Hold Me Jesus in person and it was beautiful. Here’s a pic taken the evening of the same day the one posted here was taken and he was clean shaven. I love Phil because of who he is on the inside. Sorry I had trouble uploading the picture. I’ll post it later if I can figure it out.

  • Grammie Kari

Phil was a wonderful contestant on AI and was under-rated. I am so happy to se him have success! Wishing him the very best with his new label. Such a sweet man!

  • philliegirl

Sorry still having trouble posting the pic.

  • Stilhope

    I’m so happy for Phil.

And as others have said, Lyric Street did not drop him, he left them for a bigger label.

  • CFIdolsfan

I don’t see my picture, either. Here goes again. if not, mj, please help, if you can. Thanks.

  • Easy

He looks like Chris Daughtry’s older brother.
