According to EW’s Michael Ausiello, Paula Abdul’s pricey demands torpedoed her deal to guest star on Ugly Betty.

Ugly Betty has tapped 3rd Rock Emmy winner Kristen Johnston to replace Abdul in the now-recurring role of Helen, Mode’s newest office temp and Amanda’s elder doppelganger. Abdul had been in negotiations to play the part, but last week the deal came undone ‘” in part, I hear, due to the ex-Idol judge’s insane list of demands. (Two words: Private. Jet.)

Nobody recognizes Paula for the gift that she is. Sniff.

Heh.

    LOL!!!

I’m sick of hearing about Paula’s diva-ness. I can’t tell how much is real and how much is just people making stuff up because it makes a good story. Since people who actually know her have always described her glowingly, I think I’ll go with that and take all of this with a grain of salt. So, best of luck Paula.

  • LindaT

Gee, this is a huge surprise — not.

Ugly Betty came out ahead on this one — the show is much better off with Kristen Johnston. She’ll be great in the part.

  • luvadamlambert

Just bring her back so everyone can shut up already !

I vaguely remember all the hush hush press when Paula and Emilio Estevez divorced after 2 years of marriage. All of the gossip then was unfavorable to Paula and pretty much patted Emilio on the back for getting out of the “situation”. Rumour had it that Paula was pretty unbalanced and not a pleasure to live with…for what it’s worth.

But I do believe the woman has an ego that is a lot bigger than her talent, and that she is dillusional about her worth if not about her own “problems”. Paula, I wish you would find an old sugar daddy (but then she seems to go for the younger lads) and retire to a gilded island somewhere far far away.

*sigh* Paula, Paula, Paula. All this press – I’m starting to go along with MJ’s theory. She’ll be back. This keeps AI in the news all summer and probably into fall.

  • dsp

Used to love Paula and what she brought to AI…my interest is fading fast

  • wand3rful

Paula might be a sweetheart to the Idol kids and people she works with…..but that doesnt mean she’s not demanding, crazy, annoying etc with the people that work for her and/or producers.

  • Pam

Wow! When will she ever learn? LOL

  • sonyab

Oh come on ROFL. Is this all made up or is this really real? :) ROFL!

  • hollygo9

Win for Ugly Betty. Kristen Johnston is funny.

“*sigh* Paula, Paula, Paula. All this press – I’m starting to go along with MJ’s theory. She’ll be back. This keeps AI in the news all summer and probably into fall.”

I agree as well. I’m quickly tiring of the constant “news” about all this. Wish she would just cut the deal with Fox and have done with it.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Well I am all used to the idea of no Paula and I am actually looking forward to it.

Private Jet? Who does she think she is?

  • CDCIdol

Oh please. Paula guest roled on Drop Dead Diva not once but twice. I’m sure if Lifetime can meet her “crazy demands” then ABC can also. Both times she flew to ATL to film Drop Dead Diva she flew commercial. This article is just crap.

  • AZIdolFan

i’m getting sick of all this paula stuff. and when did paula become an actress? kristen johnston is a way funny actress so ugly betty went the right way with her. i really hope ai doesn’t take her back.

  • carolinacharms

Pile on Paula Day has stretched into Pile on Paula Month. Oh well. I’ll be sure to trust some cowardly informant who hides behind a cloak of anonymity over the horse, herself.

  • Matt

I’m not surprised in the least. I remember how diva-ish Paula was on her reality TV show. That *really* turned me off. She’s a spoiled brat.

  • Natasha

It’s kind of disappointing if sunshiny Paula really is a diva. I could believe it but for now I won’t. I didn’t see her reality show except for one clip and she was acting crazy but not diva-ish.

  • cookcricket

Love Kristen Johnston and how more opposite of Paula can you get:

    Tall>Short
    Blond>Brunette
    Good comedic timing>What’s time?
    Funny>Umm…..
Down to earth>ditz wanting private jet

    Did I cover it all?

  • Sherena

I’ll be sure to trust some cowardly informant who hides behind a cloak of anonymity over the horse, herself.

I always take “I hear from unnamed sources” with a pile of healthy skepticism.

Unnamed sources = we made it up, lol! Ain’t we clever.

  • blissful

I’m beginning to suspect she has a Dr. Jerkyll/Mr. Hide personality. By most accounts, the finalists love her, but her co-workers are claiming diva behavior. Maybe she has really bad management and listens to their advice blindly. Who knows. But I’m getting tired of the drama too.

  • Suzanne

If this is true, then Paula is so stupid. She’s been in the “Idol bubble” for too darned long.

  • Grammie Kari

    > But I do believe the woman has an ego that is a lot bigger than her talent, and that she is dillusional about her worth if not about her own ‘problems’ .

Someone has been nurturing the fantasy. Are they called enablers. I like Paula enough, but this constant news is getting boring.

  • justjude

HA HA HAHAAAAA! If this is to be believed, I have a lot of bridges to sell!!!!
Now if paula has given her NEW Rep “Carte Blanche”, then she needs to fire him as
he is making her look asinine and unsympathetic to even the people who have been
her loyal supporters? If “OTHER interested parties are leaking trash ,who Knows ….(ai lower level disemblers)????or just peeps that have never appreciated her role????
Why, Why would anyone, let alone Paula be the certain author of her own demise of
crdibility????? I HAVE LONG CARED ABOUT PAULA. But, if this is true someone will make sure she gets the Horrible “MEDIA VIRUS” That Frequently infects those who are
resting on their laurels of diminishing celebrity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ligeya

\\By most accounts, the finalists love her, but her co-workers are claiming diva behavior.\\

I read some interviews with contestants, and they usually say she was sweet and kind to them, but also add that actually they saw her and other judges for few minutes before and after the shows. She and other judges don’t actually spend time with them, unlike Ryan, who’s there during auditions, rehearsals, shows, interviews and so on. So they don’t know her personally.

As for co-workers… Well, her reality show demonstrated everything. I think she’s unbearable human being. And delusional. And diva-ish. And I doubt Ryan, Simon and Randy are that miserable because of her departure from the show.
But still, I’ll be fine if she’s back on the show. Her insanity is amusing.

  • eyin

Oh please. Paula guest roled on Drop Dead Diva not once but twice. I’m sure if Lifetime can meet her ‘crazy demands’ then ABC can also.

But doesn’t she produce that show?

  • bmms

What I’m tired of is all the negative comments on this article about Paula. :nono_tb: I’m not a fan of Paula; but as MJ mentions “Nobody recognizes Paula for the gift she is.” How true. I am certain that all of the negative publicity that has been published about her cannot be ALL fact. I am also certain that the continued hoopla and this going back and forth about AI / Paula negotiations or not is part of their continued publicity ploy.

    Kudos Paula! :wink_ee:

  • larc

Paula will be back at the AI judges’ desk when the ’10 live season starts IMHO because, in the end and in spite of all her “opportunities,” I’m guessing she really won’t have anywhere else to go.

  • colette

Oh MJ — The “gift” that Paula is?

I’m getting some yucks out of this whole thing, because it’s like: “Central casting! Get me an impossibly narcissistic diva who fits all the cliches!”

If Paula is back, fine. If not, also fine.

But any pity party for this gal just makes me snicker. She’s a caricature of stupid celebritytism, for cryin’ out loud! She makes J-Lo (who reportedly, on her earlier tours, demanded her dressing rooms redecorated in white to her specifications, and required precise numbers of luxury items, edible and not, and that no mere staff peon look her in the eye or speak to her) like Miss Congeniality.

Ultimately, who cares? Divas are amusing because of their over-the-top demands and foibles, but ultimately they’re nonessential and replaceable. There’s always another has-been or quasi-famous type thrilled to take their slot.

Practically, it’s hard to know what Paula brings to the show, except her enjoyably dingbat comments and her obvious affection for the contestants.

I mean, how hard can this gig be? They watch auditioners who have been carefully screened by their staff. They get into their seats two seconds before airtime on show nights. They have to utter 30-second opinions of the contestants. They run out for ciggie/bathroom/whatever breaks between segments.

Most of them have several other jobs and/or TV :hmm2_ee:on late-night TV. And they get paid more than all the teachers in my local public school district. And I’m supposed to feel sorry for her? No way, Josefina…..

  • lavender1960

Well bottomline is Kristen Johnson is a real actor and comedy is the hardest kind of acting to do so I wonder if Paula was ever a real consideration or just hype.

Having seen Paula on her own reality show, diva is her middle name. People will put up with diva behaviour from those that are still talented and hot enough on the Hollywood meter that they have to put up with it, but once your star starts fading, see how quickly people suddenly tire of it.

  • lostinidol

I am certain that all of the negative publicity that has been published about her cannot be ALL fact. I am also certain that the continued hoopla and this going back and forth about AI / Paula negotiations or not is part of their continued publicity ploy.

I always have doubts about what I read. You can’t go in with an open mind. You have to error on the side that says these articles are all about creating buzz and have little to do with the truth. However, Paula made herself the exception to the rule with Hey Paula. Diva doesn’t begin to describe someone who would look into the camera and in all seriousness talk about being a gift that is unappreciated. Diva? Try narcissistic personality disorder.

I doubt this is a publicity ploy. Paula is coming out the big loser here in how she is being depicted. Long before contract negotiations began she was complaining that the show made her look bad. I doubt she would be a party to some ploy that ends up hurting her reputation further. I do expect that by the time the live shows begin, she will be begging Idol to come back at whatever price. However, I think there is a real possibility that Idol may be done with her.
