UPDATE:   From the LA Times:

“We discussed the possibility of her now being available to come on ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’” he said. “She’s on the East Coast at this moment in time and hopefully we’re going to meet this weekend in Vegas. We go out to do our Vegas Week this week and Paula’s gonna come out there and we’ll sit down and talk about what opportunities are available. If I can afford her.”

“With Paula’s background as a dancer, choreographer and reality judge now, I don’t know anyone more qualified than Paula Abdul,” he added.

Lythgoe said he didn’t discuss the “Idol” negotiations with Abdul but thinks it’s a mistake for the show to have let her go.

“I think that’s too personal,” he said. “That’s what she must sort out for herself. All we discussed is that, yes, this is the situation at the moment, and she may well be free to come and join us on ‘SYTYCD.’”

Lythgoe said that it’s shameful that “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell’s salary and host Ryan Seacrest’s recent negotiations were made public, because “that would have aggrieved anybody else and you’d want more money, I would think, when you see those numbers. Negotiations should be held behind closed doors, not discussed, and no embarrassment on either party.”

According to Billy Bush of Access Hollywood, Nigel Lythgoe has made an offer to Paula Abdul. I presume it’s for So You Think You Can Dance.   He says Paula and Nigel are meeting this weekend in Las Vegas.

Also, Bush says Paula’s deal with Idol may NOT be dead. (I would not be surprised if Paula and Idol worked something out at the last minute…even if she missed some audition dates–she’s missed them before)

@BillyBush tweeted:

Just spoke with @dizzyfeet…has made offer 2 Paula. They’re meeting this wkend in vegas 2 discuss. also sed deal may NOT be dead with #idol

Also, Bush got a statement from Randy Jackson (If you can make out Bush’s twitterspeak…yikes)

Fr randy re: @paulaabdul lving #idol: “I am shocked. Paula is a dear friend and will be missed. May be out there but “shocked” says alot

I remember watching this kids show with my children called Lambchops Playhouse or something like that. At the end of the show one of the puppets sang this song….this is the song that doesn’t end, yet it goes on, and on my friends, …….and he just goes on and on until the credits roll. This is how this story seems to be forming now….it’s over, whoops, not quite……I still think it’s a done deal, but I also would not be surprised if it’s just another freaking Idol ploy and that they will be rushing her little ass into her seat come January. Same bat time, same bat channel. Now I’ve dated myself, twice.

  • alison8701

some people started singing it not knowing what it was, but they’ll continue singing it forever just because this is the song… thanks a lot abbysee. That’s stuck in my head now.

isn’t SYTYCD the one with that reeeeeally loud obnoxious one?

  • weareallinnocent

    I still think it’s a done deal

    Me too.

  • terps

I think she is gone for good, why was fox so quick to release a statement if they thought there was a chance

  • abbysee

Sorry Alison, lol. This is the never ending story, and we will be waiting for any spoilers for inside info. Yes, it goes on and on my friends….

  • itsalleternal

The real deadline is probably December, since that is when Hollywood week most likely is. (Simon is busy in the UK from late August until early December for the X Factor)

  • karenw

I sense a situation here like we had with the x factor a couple of years ago concerning judge Louis Walsh.

Louis was one of the original mentors/judges but there was an apparent fall out and he was sacked before one of the series started and replaced by Brian Freidman (who was previously the shows choreographer) .. there was loads of coverage in the press and Louis appeared lots of chat shows telling the story of how he was just phoned up and told he was no longer required .. all of this seemed a bit odd as him and Simon appeared to be good pals prior to this.

So lots of hype for the new series .. the auditions started and after a couple they decided that it wasn’t working out with Brian as a judge/mentor so hey presto .. they ring Louis and ask him to come back .. which of course he did.

Of course this is a different story with Paula not appearing to have been sacked but it wouldn’t surprise me if she does return either just prior to the next series .. or half way through the auditions .. it all adds to the hype and the publicity.

  • Lisa

Abbysee I will see your bat song and raise you one, “Hello, world, here’s the song that we’re singin’ , C’mon get happy!” along with a “Here’s the story of a lovely lady” and a sprinkling of “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip”. Heh

Sooo it looks like Nigel is trying to snatch up Pauler which could make Idol more interested in upping their ante.

  • cookcricket

I was sad, but just starting to feel some relief. If she comes back it better not be at the expense of Kara. Geesh.

  • Sherena

I don’t think they can renege on Kara’s contract now that it’s signed… Kara is there for keeps, I think.

  • terps

Now we have three judges that will actually make a point while judgeing the contestants.

  • adamland

I’m really starting not to care what Paula does or where she does it.

  • Sherena

Now we have three judges that will actually make a point while judgeing the contestants.

    Two. Not Randy.

  • lostinidol

Sooo it looks like Nigel is trying to snatch up Pauler which could make Idol more interested in upping their ante.

Except it is the same network, Fox, and they are the ones doing the negotiating. I doubt they are going to refuse to pay her $20 million on Idol but give it to her on SYTYCD. Does Nigel even make $20 million? And up until now SYTYCD is only a summer show which Paula could have done at any time while she was still with Idol. It only makes sense to do it now if she can find work no where else.

Of course this is a different story with Paula not appearing to have been sacked but it wouldn’t surprise me if she does return either just prior to the next series .. or half way through the auditions .. it all adds to the hype and the publicity.

I could see this happening, Fox’s way of calling Paula’s bluff and essentially making her beg for her job back and eagerly accept any dollar amount they give her. The problem is that if the whole point of Paula’s value is her kind and gentle critiques, they are far more needed in the auditions when the truly deluded come through, than in the Hollywood round and beyond. But everyone assumes that there will not now be anyone to counter Simon’s caustic critiques. In fact, Simon is less caustic on the UK shows he does. So perhaps Paula’s departure will mean a kinder, gentler Simon.

  • will

“There is no one else I know that can slap Simon around,” he said. “I don’t think Kara can do that. The chemistry isn’t right. She hasn’t been castigated by Simon.”

Nigel must not have been watching. I can think of at least two instances when Simon castigated Kara, one for daring to criticize Kris’ rendition of “Apologize” when it was her song choice for him, and of course who can forget his withering assessment of Nobo.

But why should any of the judges be slapping each other around? That’s what has made the AI judging panel such a tedious, time-wasting joke.

  • abbysee

That’s just not the American Idol Simon, I don’t think he can change his personna to become all puppies and rainbows.

  • NewFan

How about AI has a 3 judge panel with Paula and Kara alternating so that Paula can also do SYTYCD?

  • NewFan

Okay. I’m just a NewFan so I’m allowed to have way out ideas for the franchise.

  • http://talkinaboutmovies.blogspot.com Brenoga

Vic Beckham to replace Paula on Idol? That would be at least interesting.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/2573658/Victoria-Beckham-lined-up-for-American-Idol.html

  • NewFan

The Beckam’s are best seen and not heard.

  • terps

I think Victoria will be a good replacement, one who would probably stay when and if the show switches to X-factor (she would be a great group mentor). The only problem with it, is we will never no her true feelings about a performance because she always has the same look on her face.

She sure would keep the us men watching :)

I still want Paula back on Idol. But whatever, hopefully she’ll get to work with SYTYCD.

If she’s not kidding it’s gonna be curious when we find out what she meant by that. MONTHS? hm..

  • schmanda

Now we have three judges that will actually make a point while judgeing the contestants.

    Two. Not Randy.

0.5. Not Kara, and partially Simon (depending, of course, on whether or not he’s decided to phone it in on any given night).

Kirstie Alley has a wicked oddball sense of humor and is laughing her a$$ off at everyone who is remotely taking her seriously.

  • Vada

Since 19 manages Victoria Beckham, it would seem to be a bit of a scandal if she gets Paula’s job. No wonder they weren’t seriously negotiating with Paula, if they wanted to replace her with one of their own.

That would be rather interesting. Whatever 19 pays Victoria in salary, they would be getting 20 to 50% of it back in management fees. Smooth.

  • lucy

Oh, geez. I could live with the no-Paula thing if it meant we’d only have three judges, but if they dump the only nice one and one of the two who occasionally says something perceptive about talent rather than packages and yet still make us suffer though *four* judges. Gross.

    Three judges only, please.

  • CynicalDog

I’d really prefer to not see Paula as a regular judge on SYTYCD. A guest judge, once or twice a season, is fine. But the thought of all Paula, all the time, doesn’t please me. Even if Paula knows dance better than she knows music, I can’t imagine her offering helpful constructive criticism. The current SYTYCD judges need to improve in this department, too, but at least they occasionally seem knowledgeable.

As for Kara, I guess I’m in the minority in that I liked her as a judge, but only at the beginning of last season. At first she offered helpful, insightful comments, and it was great to have a new perspective. She seemed to quickly be squashed into submission by Simon, however, and then turned into a “broken record”. I felt sorry for Kara a few times when it looked as if Simon and Paula were mocking her, and I think she has a lot to contribute if she’s allow to be herself.

  • sallyas1

Dear God please don’t make Paula a permanent judge on SYTYCD. SYTYCD will start going overtime as well.

I’d be fine with an occasional guest judge, and Paula choreographs on occasion as well.
