Check out this short interview, from Access Hollywood, posted after the jump. It gives a hint of the chemistry we might find between Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and new judge Kara DioGuardi once American Idol Season 8 begins in January. Kara is already giving Simon crap. Heh.

In the interview, both Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest hint that Simon will probably be the tie-breaker during the audition phase of the competition. And when asked where he’ll be sitting, Simon says, “between the two girls,” although I have a hard time believing he won’t have the last word. Ryan believes Kara will bring “a candor and unvarnished female point of view,” to the table. He adds, “She’s like the tough chick.” Paula behaves as if she single-handedly discovered Kara. Is that Kara rolling her eyes a little?

One more interesting tidbit. Ryan Seacrest did an interview with Tom O’Neil of the LA Times Gold Derby blog. It was mostly about Ryan hosting the Emmys. However, when O’Neil asked Ryan to remark on the changes Simon Cowell told reporters he wants to make now that Nigel Lythgoe has stepped down from production duties, Ryan remarked, “He told me he has his head wrapped around making sure the show doesn’t feel contrived and doesn’t feel predictable. And I think that that’s…very, very smart, and I think that that’s up to Simon, the producers and all of us to make sure we deliver a show that does have that element.”

Whatever that means.

That is scary if Simon is the tie-breaker contestants like David Cook would not make it through. Simon did not get David in the beginning. I am not sure if I like that idea.

  • bjames

he couldn’t remember kelly in the beginning either. but… i can think of a lot of contestants i agreed with him on, so i guess it goes both ways.

  • blove

As much as people dislike Simon for his blunt honesty, he does have an eye, and an ear for talent, and whether or not that talent has the potential for making and selling great music. He really does know what he’s doing, so I appreciate that Simon would have the deciding vote in the case of a tie-breaker. This past season had exceptional talent, of whom several will have relatively good careers. Other seasons have seen moderate if very little success from the top ten contestants and I think that’s because the talent just wasn’t strong enough to make it in the industry. So, Tie Break Away Simon!

  • Jolene

Both David Cook and Chris Daughtry wouldn’t have made the show if Simon was the tie breaker on their seasons. Wonder what immense talents are gonna go home before the competition even begins this year….
Somehow, that makes me want to watch the auditions now. LOL

  • sma11ie

hello– lurker/new poster here, so be kind! hope this is on-topic, but i wanted to comment on the idea a lot of ppl have that since simon said “no” to david cook, that is proof that he can’t identify talent. i just want to say that DC actually got 3 yesses at his initial audition. (simon called him ‘worthy’, but that’s another discussion). i may be giving simon too much credit, but i take the fact that simon gave DC a ‘no’ during the 1st round of H-wood week as a way for him to challenge DC and kick him in the butt to be better (more ‘worthy’?)– which is exactly how DC took it, if u watch his first video package. i think simon used a pretty ‘safe’ round to diss/challenge DC– not only was it was the first round in H-wood, meaning DC had another chance to make top 24 even if he didn’t get put straight thru, he also said ‘no’ AFTER paula and randy had already said yes. he KNEW DC was going thru; he just wanted to make a point. i don’t think he would’ve said no if he were a true tie-breaker.

  • outofsorts

That’s true, sma11ie — Kelly, on the other hand, would have definitely been axed from the competition if it had been up to him.

  • 123abc456

Smallie, you are right about H week and Cook I remember that now, but he still makes me nervous. I also did not realize that he had another chance to make it thru. David C has said that some of the negative comments made by Simon challenged him to step up his game and do better in the next round. I guess I will just have to wait and see how it goes next season.

  • anijsch

I also think that Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s No are sometimes more part of a game, who rules only he knows.

And to make it necessary that Simon has to choose, there have to be another person who say No.

  • gingerly

I just want to say that when Simon said no to David Cook, he had another chance the next day. I seriously doubt he would have said no if it was the ultimate answer at the time. I don’t really like any of them having the ultimate answer. I think a decision with them discussing makes much more sense. I agree that Simon’s decisions are sometimes not necessarily ultimate No’s.

  • sma11ie

i’d never watched a whole season of AI until this one. can someone brief me on simon’s initial responses to kelly and/or daughtry?

i have to say, though, this new judge thing is working if i’m any indication. i’d all but decided i wouldn’t get sucked into another season after what david cook’s done to me, but i’m pretty intrigued by the prospect of the new chemistry at the judging table with the addition of this kara lady (who seems like a pretty cool chick from mj’s clips and links, btw). i think i’ll have to check out some audition rounds at least.

  • maracaibo

I have to say I dont see much chemistry between Kara and Paula, and even Simon.
IMO it was a mistake to have a fourth judge, but I hope I am wrong.
It just feels a bit awkward . JMHO.
I also hope it doesn’t affects the show negatively.

  • gingerly

I’m not looking for chemistry between the judges. I’m looking for somebody who is coherent and can give a credible critique. She’s looking good to me so far.

  • grrrr

In the interview, both Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest hint that Simon will probably be the tie-breaker during the audition phase of the competition.

Well, yeah, that’s what they did the seasons they had guest judges during the auditions.

And when asked where heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be sitting, Simon says, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“between the two girls,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ although I have a hard time believing he wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the last word.

I remember, back in the day, before Simon became the only useful judge, that the three used to take turns on judged first and last.

    Ryan believes Kara will bring à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a candor and unvarnished female point of view,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to the table. He adds, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like the tough chick.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Am I the only one who reads that as catty Ryan saying, “Unlike Paula who just wants to hump all the pretty boys?” ….and I’ll be going away now.

  • 123abc456

Simon did not like kelly or daughtry at first if I remember right, but I did not watch consistantly back then, it could be what I just read or heard.

  • IGetCranked

I haven’t watched all the videos so I don’t know if this is a repeat but on the official site there is a clip of Kara. She talks of having a song on Archie’s cd and of co-writing a song with Cook.

Am I the only one who reads that as catty Ryan saying, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Unlike Paula who just wants to hump all the pretty boys?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be going away now.

Catty, and maybe a little true.

Daughtry audition where Simon said no -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHUsTVFQdzg

Note what he said about lack of charisma, the same thing he said to David Cook. I don’t doubt for a moment that Simon has no ear for rock, and that he really didn’t get David Cook (I’d even say that he didn’t get David Cook even at the end when he was singing his praise). He is entirely pop and novelty-act orientated, it’s the area he is good at and where he is most successful – Il Divo, Teletubbies, Leona Lewis. His idea of charisma is not my idea of charisma.

  • aly

LMAO at Simon trying to make the show
    “less contrived and predictable” Priceless.

  • SpenserJ

Am I the only one who reads that as catty Ryan saying, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Unlike Paula who just wants to hump all the pretty boys?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Seacrest knows that Paula is useless. He’s probably trying to get the point across without saying “hey, now we’ll have a female judge who actually makes sense, so you can fast forward through Paula”.

Both David Cook and Chris Daughtry wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have made the show if Simon was the tie breaker on their seasons. Wonder what immense talents are gonna go home before the competition even begins this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I think incredible talents probably go home every year either long before we see them, or after we’ve seen them but before we’ve seen what they can actually do. Just like I have no doubt that people as talented, or more talented than the people Simon doesn’t “get” in the beginning, are turned away from record companies every day.

Because so many incredibly talented people never get their break, we’re deprived of immense talent on a regular basis. We just don’t know it. In the end, Simon and the producers and the people they answer to are interested in producing an entertaining and successful tv show. Bringing the public a previously undiscovered talent that they can really enjoy is just the cherry on top. And well, we just don’t always get the cherry.

  • hoodathunk

All I can say is thank God Taylor Hicks made it through before Simon became the tiebreaker.

  • Duke

I just heard on our local news that the second round of auditions were held today in Jacksonville. I was hoping they would say who the ex. producers were that are judging now that nigel is gone…im assuming Ken is stil there.
They said round 3 with these guys will be sometime next week but of course they cant say where…My guess: The Omni downtown.

ps. i posted this link before but it might have been missed- its pics of the winners who passed round 1…recognize the two black girls that auditioned last year that they showed form jax?? i do!

Simon also does not get country at all. He affirmatively seems to hate it. So there are at least two major genres where you would not want Simon to be your tiebreaker—rock and country.

  • tinawina

I thought Simon said yes to Kelly going to Hollywood? He said yes to Cook too. But he did say no to Taylor and Chris Daughtry.

I think a tie should go through to Hollywood, otherwise you’ve in effect given Simon two votes to everyone else’s one. It’s not fair to the other judges, I think.

New ‘American Idol’ judge, let’s raise the bar

Right he did say yes to DC during his audition. He said that stupid “a little bit worthy” line but did say he was good. Then in Hollywood his first solo performance Simon didn’t like that and said he would be vulnerable if he got rid of the guitar, then the next day when he got his 2nd shot Simon loved it (the never before seen “I’ll Be”). In one of the various montage packages you see Simon commenting on the performance and David saying he won him over.

  • fannatic

They should have invited Zack Werner from Canadian Idol to be the 4th AI judge cuz he and Simon are both blunt and hilarious!

  • Hazehel

He said that stupid à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a little bit worthyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ line but did say he was good.

In Britain, the worthy line is usually meant to convery an unsaid negative comment in the line of “worthy but….”, and more often then not, it’s “worthy but dull”. It is not a positive comment, and said when it is not quite appropriate to make a negative comment about something which is considered good.

  • ktkidwatcher

I do not think adding this Kara person was a smart idea. I like her better than Paula already but this new format is taking away a lot from the original “American Idol”. They can change up everything else but messing with something that has been there for the past seven seasons and has held the show together seems dumb. Don’t get me wrong, Kara seems very smart and more qualified than both Randy and Paula put together but I can’t imagine another permanent judge. I have become so used to having three judges. Four is too much. If I wasn’t addicted to AI already I would be way turned off by this.

I predict that either Kara or Paula will be out of here by the start of season 9.

  • FolkFan

Everyone seems to be assuming that Kara is a missile pointed at Paula. But in terms of her background, she seems more like a missile pointed at Randy.
