Paula Abdul On Her Dance, Idol and More – CBS Sunday Morning

Paula Abdul’s new TV Dance competition, Live To Dance is set to premiere on CBS Tuesday January 4.  The show will feature amateur dancers competing for prizes. I’m betting the show is going to be heavy on the emotional heart-tugging backstories, and light on the talent…

Anyhoo. An interview with fellow reality show chick Julie Chen (she hosts Big Brother) aired on CBS Sunday Morning today.  The piece covered Paula’s past as a dancer and highly sought-after choreographer, hit recording artist–and of course–one of the judges on American Idol.

The piece glosses over her loopiness–we see Paula grasping for words as she judges Season 7 Idol Jason Castro, but the fact that she critiqued a song Jason hadn’t even performed yet is never mentioned  Paula insists she’s never been drunk or used recreational drugs–but her possible addiction to pain killers to relieve chronic pain due to an early 90’s plane accident? Not discussed.

I can’t really gauge whether Paula’s new show will be a success. I would imagine CBS will be happy with modest-but-good numbers.  I’m thinking there are plenty of people out there who miss Paula’s own special brand of crazy.  In hindsight, I think Idol suffered when the producers let her go.  The premiere will attract a curious audience, I think.  But, how will it fare when it is up against Idol’s January 19 premiere? Should be interesting to watch….
