Paula Abdul Involved in “Tense” Negotiations with X Factor

She’s at it again! Paula Abdul is proving once again to be a difficult negotiator as her X Factor talks continue through to the 11th hour.

L.A. Reid, Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell are all set to sit at the judges’ panel when the X Factor begins filming live auditions in Los Angeles on Sunday.

But Paula? “…those talks have not progressed as smoothly as Cowell, Fox and producer Fremantle North America might have hoped.” reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The problems may not be entirely Paula’s, however:

One issue, according to sources, was an option that CBS had on Abdul based on a deal for her to participate in the short-lived CBS competition show Live to Dance. That deal, according to two sources close to X Factor, contained language that could have prevented Abdul from joining the new show.

A CBS source says any issues with Abdul’s Live to Dance deal have been worked out, but another source says the break wasn’t so clean.

Paula’s reps and X Factor producers are said to be locked in “tense” negotiations. A source close to the show tells THR that the expectation is still that a deal will get done and Paula will be there for the LA judging rounds. But another source was not so sure.

“People would be very surprised if she is there on Sunday,” this source says.

According to THR, It’s unclear how much Paula’s salary demands for X Factor have become a sticking point in deal talks.

Probably a lot. I imagine that in order for Simon to recognize “the gift she is”, she is going to want at least what JLo is getting. Somebody has to make amends for her getting unceremoniously dumped from Idol.

Salary demands were one of the things that held up and finally sunk her deal with Idol. She wanted to get paid closer to Ryan/Simon levels. Meanwhile, Randy was content to work for whatever recognizing this is the best gig he’s ever gotten and will probably ever get (and helps him get other gigs). I don’t think she learned a lesson from that, because in Paula’s mind, it never seems to be her fault.

Paula doesn’t seem to make great career choices.

C’mon people have we learned nothing from UK XF?? It’s just another planted story to build buzz for the audition rounds. Paula’s deal has probably been locked down now for weeks because no way is Simon going to risk her not being at the first live taping. It’s the very first season of course there’s going to be all 4 judges there on Sunday. By the end of the day or by tomorrow morning we’re going to have a miraculous press release how “Paula signed in the 12th hour to give Simon his dream panel”

Paula probably has already signed this contract. Simon is just playing this as a publicity stunt when she is the last judge announced at the LA Auditions on Sunday.

Do not put anything beyond Simon for maximizing the exposure of this show in the press. He has been doing this for years in the UK.

LOL. That wouldn’t surprise me. Spin. Gotta love it.

I really don’t understand how Simon could believe that Paula would be a good mentor for a singing show. Paula hasn’t been relevant in the music business for more years than I can remember. I pity the poor kids that will be under her guidance… now if this was a dance show, that’s completely different but I guess that experiment bombed.

X-Factor mentors do more than ‘mentor’ the song choice/vocals. It’s also about staging and production of the performance. At least it was on the UK version. It’s about the complete ‘package’. I think it’s a better fit for her than Idol ever was.

It’s not like Paula will teach her contestants how to sing or dance. She will pick their songs from a pre-approved list, possibly with producer’s and contestant’s input, then she will talk to the choreographer (possibly Brian Friedman) on her vision of the performance and then the choreographer and vocal coaches take over. Paula will then show up one day before the performance show to watch rehearsals on stage and film comments for intro packages.

I agree that Simon is pulling out all of the publicity stunts he can think of. He really was not expecting The Voice to do so well or for the judges to become immediately likeable on that show.

Now it’s not just idol that he is competing with, so the more press the better.

That’s the worst part. Remember some of the terrible choices she made on Idol for Final 3 night? Few people ever wanted her to pick the song for her favourite Idol (she never did pick the song for the contestant that went on to win the show). That songs she picked for Gokey and Aiken were particularly bad. Bo’s was a weird choice. Her choices for Blake and Archie were okay-ish. “Mr Melody” for Jasmine and “What You Won’t Do For Love” for Elliott did neither of them any favours.

Exactly. Just another lame attempt to inject some “drama” into a situation that has probably been finalized a while ago.

I don’t know…I think it’s entirely possible that Paula’s deal is still in negotiation. According to this press report, Paula had not even begun her negotiations with the show yet.

I hope she gets whatever she wants. She looks like a rocket scientist compared to this year’s drabble coming from the judges table.

mj, you are amazing! don’t you ever sleep?

I’m completely over both Simon and Paula. Have been for a long time. I just don’t care.

Well for all of the seasons that I watched, none of the winners danced around or did big production numbers to win the thing, it was about their voice (Leona, Alexandra, Joe and Matt). Oh wait, then there’s Wagner and Jedward….. I think I just figured out Paula’s role on the US X-factor. :)

    I strongly suspect she doesn’t.

I hope Paula doesn’t overestimate her worth and hold out for more than Simon may be willing to pay her. It’s not a good time for her to be standing in the unemployment line. But at least she probably has more talent for that kind of job than anybody on the mostly ornamental Idol panel.
