Paula Abdul will be performing her new single “I’m Just Here for the Music” on this Wednesday’s American Idol results show.

She confirmed the rumors that were floating around the internet this morning on Ryan Seacrest’s KISS LA morning radio show.

Hm. Not my cuppa exactly. It sounds super old-school. Not hearing this on radio at all. Maybe it’ll get some club play like her last single…

Update: According to the New York Post, Paula is now admitting to a drug addiction. So she lied to ABC News’ Cynthia McFadden? SHOCK. Not.

Since she’s preparing to return to the music scene, the timing seemed right to bare her soul over the drug habit that she’s recently kicked.

For the first time, Abdul reveals how hard it was for her to detox from a 12-year-long painkiller addiction.

“I could have killed myself,” she tells this month’s issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.

The withdrawal was “the worst thing. I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain. It was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”

Paula swears she was never under the influence while filming American Idol. Yeah, right. Abdul says she kicked the habit last Thanksgiving during a stay at a spa resort.

No wonder her remarks from the judges panel seem so lucid this year…

Ooooh, a loverly trainwreck! Gotta buy popcorn!! I’ll squirm, flinch, and grimace, but I’ll watch.

  • wolfsbane813

there is a clip of it on ryan seacrests KISS website. unfortunately its all tagged up with the radio stations name.

    http://ryanseacrest.com/blog/whats-happening/exclusive-paula-abdul-debuts-new-single-here-for-the-music/

its actually not bad. im digging it.

  • jumpstart

Ugh, just one more performance to fast-forward through.

Why is she ruining my Daughtry buzz?

  • sweetie99v

3 performances is going to be a lot.

I’m actually kind of liking the song. Its a good dance/club song. Although it reminds me of Madonna in some way….

  • terps

Poor Paula, I smell a good old train wreck comming

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Well, listening to the song, the dancing’ll probably be good.

  • razzyberry77

    Dont you mean lip sync?

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

Why am I not surprised that the vocal is vocodered all to hell?
Because that’s the only way she would do it live.

Plus IMO it’s much too slow for clubs- unless they are sleepy clubs.
Good dance is like 140 bpm, and this is nowhere near that.

    Dreck.

  • mitchellvii

Wow, well that’s a steaming cup of suck. Sounds like Paula doesn’t realize it isn’t 1985 anymore. Not a very modern sounding tune there. Maybe she should give a listen to Lady Gaga and see what music in 2009 sounds like.

Plus, the imagery of Paula “just making out” when she is 40 years old isn’t that same as when she was 24.

    I give this a 2. Fail.

  • JosieX

I like Paula’s new song. The beat reminds me of Alexander O’Neal’s “Fake”, you can hear it if you listen to the first few seconds of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ac_7EmYGXs
(I’m new and not sure if this link is going to show up correctly, apologies if not). But I used to buy just about everything like this I could get my hands on to ease the boredom of the stairmaster routine, which has gone by the wayside unfortunately. Maybe Paula will inspire me to get back to it! I think she will do a good job of performing it, I’m pretty sure she has still got all her moves. She was always the first to say that her voice is not the greatest (I seem to recall a quote from her saying “I’m no Aretha”), but I always thought she was fun to watch.

  • houstonray

Oh my God, does ANYONE actually sing anymore (other than the contestants!). Jeeesh, that doesn’t even SOUND like Paula.

I’m so sick of the the so called ‘singers’ who are nothing more than ‘enhanced parrots’.

  • rbidol

I disagree with you, mitchellvii. I think Paula is smart to do something that is reminiscent of her peak in the late-80s, early-90s. Its been about 20 years; she can’t pretend she is a 20-something-year-old Lady Gaga. Do you really think that would be smart? This is a good move: it reminds people of the music they loved from her, while still sounding updated and hip. Actually, I think Paula’s music has aged very well…over twenty years later, Straight Up is still a good tune…so that’s an advantage she has.

I think this is a very good song for Paula. Good for her.

  • piperlily

Whoa, I do not like it. It does sound 80s, in not a good way.
Is she trying to find a path after Idol? This is like Madonna trying to keep a career singing like she’s 20-something.
But poor Paula, I still like her. And finally, the truth comes out.

  • Suzanne

I know–it’s a real late 80s type song. And the lyrics are for a 20 year old. Kind of weird. Does Madonna sing about making out with guys?

Agree that a few of Paula’s songs have survived–Straight up, forever your girl, etc. In fact, I’d rather see her lip sync to one of those.

And she was so obviously loaded last year, especially that Top 5 night.

  • Michelle

Well, at least she finally admitted to taking the pain pills. I thought it was weird that she always denied taking ANY EVER, I mean no one would blame her if she were taking them (under a dr’s care) if she was in pain from her injuries. I guess she was protesting too much after all. Hope she stays clean.

The song’s okaaaay…kind of generic…it could do with a remix (paging Adam!)

  • Victoria

Good for Paula for kicking the painkiller addiction. I’m glad she’s drug-free and feeling well enough not to need them.

I like Paula’s new song. It’s catchy. Much better than Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow. So does this mean she might actually release that comeback album she’s been talking about forever?

It just hit me how close this season is to being over. Wow. S7 felt so much longer.

  • baxter

I think I figured it all out…..American Idol is the new American Bandstand. How many performances are they going to try and cram into an hour long results show that is suppose to be about…..THE IDOLS???? Shocking I know!!

    Seriously though..

Ryan= Dick Clark, grap a couple Moshbots to come up and give the old ” It’s got a good beat and I could really dance to it” critic followed by a score of 76. AM was a staple of my formative years. Scooby Doo then Bandstand every Sat morning. At least now I can sleep in on Sat and watch the new and improved * cough* version every Wed night at 9 Easern….sigh!!

  • razzyberry77

Perfect timing as her single drops. Glad she kicked the habit but I think someone is writing her critiques this year.

  • Mateja

    Oh Paula…

The song sounds dated and the lyrics don’t seem appropriate for Paula’s age. It also took me a while to identify Paula’s voice.

  • jumpstart

And she was so obviously loaded last year, especially that Top 5 night.

    Poor Jason. :cry_wp:

  • oddobserver

I can just imagine Simon just itching to diss her about this -
“This is absolute self-indulgent rubbish. We can’t see your personality underneath all the synthesized rubbish you call ‘music’. Oh SHUSH, Paula!”

For me, aahhhh….a nice nostalgic trip back to ’80s schtick, but definitely not for 2009. I actually like it, but then, I’m a couger. I’m not sure it’s the way to make a comeback, tho’ I applaud her for getting herself back on track. No easy way to kick a painkiller addiction, especially when you’re living in pain without them.

First Jamie, now Paula. What? Now robots can sing on the Idol stage too?

ETA to jumpstart: Hey, I’m a couger. The last time I watched AI was Season 2! The only reason I tuned in this season was Adam caught my eye (and ear) with ‘Mad world’. He’s the reason I tuned in, tho’ Kris does make me want to start cooing, tho’ that would be soooooo wrong with his sweet wife in the audience.

  • jumpstart

Now robots can sing on the Idol stage too?

Have you not been paying attention? That happened last year. :tongue3_tb:

  • tinawina

Wow. That song is bad. Its like a throwaway track from the Straight Up album. And who the hell are you “turning on” on the dance floor Paula? Ugh.

  • http://dcmjlive.wordpress.com dcmjlive

Paula FINALLY admits to drugs, hallelujah! I’m glad she’s come clean. And at least, she’s seem lucid lately.

On other news, I actually like her new single…why is that so? I do hope she doesn’t do what Jamie Foxx did during the results show…it’s just so…I can’t even find a good word for it.

  • oddobserver

    tinawina

And who the hell are you à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“turning onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the dance floor Paula?

    Ryan Seacrest?

ETA: Yeah, tinawina! Let’s have a grrrls’ night on results night, where we have Seacrest and Adam boost Puala on their shoulders down that infamous staircase. Since Ryan is so much shorter than Adam, Paula puts her sparkly shoes on his shoulder in as sexy a manner as possible, to dispel all those ‘gay’ rumors.

Oh wait…then we’ll have the Paula and the contestants rumors…*dang it*

  • tinawina

    Ryan Seacrest?

:laugh_tb: If he’s turned on its because he likes her sparkly shoes or something. You know how Ryan is about shoes.

  • outofsorts

What drug would she most likely have been taking to affect her in that manner? Remind me to never take whatever it is…

  • brooke

so sad to hear she has had a 12 year addiction! I hope she continues to beat the addiction though! even if paula thinks out/ writes out her comments in advance, i do think in the semi-finals she proved that she cares for the kids the most as she was not only the only one to remember their previous performances but the only one to actually seem to care that they weren’t singing for the first time.

  • Niall

What drug would she most likely have been taking to affect her in that manner? Remind me to never take whatever it isà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Oxycontin, vicodin, diluad, morphine, any of a number of high powered drugs would create loopy behavior, especially if she was taking more than her tolerance would allow.

In light of finally coming clean, I wish she had skipped the Nightline interview. The Redbook interview in and of itself shows her situation in a very sympathetic light but there are going to be legit questions as to why she denied it on Nightline probably within days of giving a Redbook confession.

  • jumpstart

    Nothing wrong with that!

I was actually making fun of Simon’s comment last week regarding S7 contestants being like robots. I totally disagree with him; but that’s another story.

  • carolinacharms

I liked last year’s DLTNT so much better! Oh well. I’m sure she’ll be using a backing track and a vocoder on Weds night, haha. I do have to admit that I have a (tiny) soft spot for Miss Paula. Brings back so many memories of my heyday!

  • calimari

Sounds vaguely like a Madonna tune I can’t place. Don’t love it. Don’t hate it.

  • oddobserver

Ahh…now I get it, jumpstart. :doh_tb: Well, it’s apparent that I’m been snoozing past AI for a long time. It just goes to show what a performer that Adam is, that I actually tune back in again after so long, and enjoy AI thoroughly every time Adam goes on stage.

Oh Paula, not a good move to deny drug use, then admit to it so soon after. Did your AI scripter get to your interview notebook too? Oh well…I do hope that your injury has gotten better, and just please make sure that you stay firmly on the wagon, and find other ways to cope with pain as much as possible. Good luck!

  • SpenserJ

Yeah, that doesn’t look too good. Also, for those that defended her, it will probably be disappointing knowing that she’s been lying to them for years. But, addicts lie. It’s probably what they do best.

Maybe Paula really is leaving AI. New music, kicking addiction, coming clean to the public – these all seem like aspects of extreme career rehabilitation. That’s a lot of effort to keep the job you already have (where no one seems to care that you’re an incoherent pill popper). Seems more like the stuff you do when you’re angling for something else. Although, I’m not sure there’s a better job for her than being on the most watched TV show in the nation.

  • jerzytrash

Oy~ Paula, sweetie, club crawling when you’re 47? More power to cougars (I’m one), but the idea is to be subtle. Otherwise you’re just a dirty old…nevermind.

Unless of course, you really need the money. What do you care what they say about you? Laugh all the way to the bank….

  • tinawina

Heh. It’s not her age to me, its her persona. Paula as “dance floor seductress”? One, is her voice sexy? Um, no. Two, does she come across as in any way sexually available? Um… ewwww. LOL. Madonna could pull that off. Paula is a pretty woman, but she needs to sing something about sunshine and enriching your soul and the dance floor being your centering place. With rainbows. Not “oh baby I’m so hot I know you cant help but wanna sleep with meeeeee….ooooohhhhh babbbbyyyy……. I can’t help if you responded to my sexy haaawwwttttneesssss…..”. Just NO.

  • cheese

Paula swears she was never not under the influence while filming American Idol.

    Fixed.

Paula’s “singing” sounds better than ever. Got to love technology. I guess it’s marginally better than “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.” (Let’s blame that mess on Randy)

  • sallyas1

So let me get this. We have performances by Slash and his A Team (or whatever their official name is), Daughtry, No Doubt, and Paula. My only thought on this really strange lineup – Idol is going to try to highlight the different “types” of rock – hard rock (Slash) check, pop rock (Daughtry and No Doubt) and pop (Paula.) Sorry – I can’t put rock and Paula together.

This is just way to weird.

I’m confused on Paula’s confession. Didn’t she confess to drug addiction a few years back? She got addicted to pain meds after a surgery (back surgery I think).

  • thedingoateyobaby

    >>Paula swears she was never under the influence while filming American Idol. >>

Once again I HATE being played. Does she think we’re stooooopid? We knew she was on drugs even when she denied it and we know she has been on them while doing Idol. That pisses me off.

  • oddobserver

Okay, okay, I’m gotta stop posting already. Peace out! *mutters to self – it’s only a few hours more to AI*

  • kansasfemale

Didn’t read through ALL the posts, read enough to make me want to comment

I liked it for what it was…..but then again I actually like a few Brittany songs too

so, it may have sounded dated to some…but there is very little that is new in music anymore…..if other bands can regurgitate artists from long ago, why can’t Paula sing something that might remind people of that time period

and if she can’t sing about being turned on, what would you like her to say…sheesh 40 year olds are the new dead-from-the-waist-down crowd??

she is brave for putting herself out there again…..I see absolutely nothing wrong with it…probably wouldn’t buy it, but it’s hers for the making…it didn’t sound bad, was kinda catchy…and I applaud her drive, bravery and creative energy

edit: if you haven’t read my guidelines DO IT NOW. I don’t put up with rude posts.

  • mitchellvii

I mean think about it. Paula is still a good looking woman and I definitely wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers. But for a mid-40′s woman to be singing about how she is at the club just to dance and not to make out? It’s a bit creepy and yucky.

It’s not that Paula isn’t attractive, its just that it is a juvenile song. I’m surprised she doesn’t have a line about “crush’in on a guy”.

I’m sorry, I like Paula and loved her 80′s work, but this is just a bad idea.

  • jerzytrash

I dont have a problem with her being turned on. It’s just that the whole-have-him-oiled-and-brought-to-my-tent Cher vibe is so….obvious. And presumptive. She’s simply not nubile. I think she’s missing her target audience.

I can’t help it, I’m kind of cringing for her.

  • annabelina

Ack. This song is totally catchy *coughaddictingcough*. However … boo Paula. You’re a huge blip in what promised to be an epic non-trainwrecky results show (sans actual results). =/

  • CynicalDog

Just what I need… another celebrity with an addiction to prescription painkillers, and the general public thinking the pills made her loopy and incoherent. The vast majority of people on prescription pain medication do not show any signs of impairment. When you take the meds because you need them for pain, they allow you to act normally, not like a drunken fool. I’ve taken oxycontin, oxycodone, methadone, morphine, and fentanyl over the past decade and *no one* can tell. I drive, I have a job, I have excellent fine-motor skills, I socialize, I volunteer — when I recently told one person that I took oxycodone every 6 hours, she was shocked. When you start mixing opioids with booze then yes, you’ll have problems, but responsible people don’t do that. I’m under monthly supervision by a pain management doctor, I’m subject to random drug tests… the average chronic pain patient doesn’t have the opportunity or desire to abuse their medication.

I do think there’s a subset of people with a genetic predisposition to addictions, but otherwise, most of us are dependent on our meds, not addicted. When you have a dependency you need to taper you drugs slowly if you want to go off them, not quit cold turkey. Paula is lucky she didn’t kill herself by quitting her meds suddenly and going into withdrawal. There was no need for that — a supervised withdrawal would give her the same results with no chills and sweats, etc.

I’m sorry for the speech, seriously. I’m just so tired of horror stories about pain medication. I have no quality of life when I’m in pain, and it’s hard enough to find a doctor who isn’t afraid of the DEA and is willing to prescribe more than ibuprofen. I wish Paula had admitted to being an alcoholic :p

  • oceana

I like performances, the more the better (as long as it’s not FloRida). It’s better than the filler they’d come up with otherwise, questions from viewers for instance.

I feel disappointed in Paula for lying about it many, many times, and even recently. She should feel a little ashamed, not for taking pain meds, but for lying more than she had to.

I agree though that when in pain, that’s what the hell pain pills are for, and anyone who hasn’t experienced chronic pain has no idea what it’s like to live with pain. it’s hard to enjoy anything when you are in pain for hours every day. I won’t hold the lies against Paula.

I noticed that she was not loaded this year! Good for her.
