Update: I found the entire clip of Barbara Walters on The View this morning, discussing Paula Abdul’s appearance on her Sirius Satellite Radio show last night. Watch it after the jump. According to Walters, Paula accused FOX Broadcasting, the producers of American Idol and Simon Cowell of trying to ruin her career! WTF?

ETA: More crazy from Paula – On Barbara Walter’s Sirius Satellite Radio show last night, Paula accused Fox Broadcasting of giving her address away, and said that Goodspeed wanted her dead:

Barbara Walters had quite the eye-opening chat with Paula Abdul after her appearance on The View yesterday.

Paula claims that she had already placed restraining orders on Paula Goodspeed by the time she tried out for Idol.   But despite Paula’s protests, the producers kept putting Goodspeed through to the next round, bragging, “just wait until you see this girl.”

Paula blames Simon for her erratic behavior on the judges panel, recounting the oft-repeated story about how Simon whispers things in her ear to goof her up.

“I’ve put up with so much BS, that I’ve had to crawl on my belly, but I rise like a Phoenix,” says Paula, “I don’t have to dignify, or stoop so low, to that what Simon says,” and “If people are going to believe what’s said about me and believe me, I’ve lost a lot of money, I lost endorsements, and all Simon had to do was retract what he said, but he didn’t”

According to Barbara, this year is the last on Paula’s contract.   She’ll finish up this year on Idol, but the future appears to be up in the air.

If it’s true that the producers (and I’m not convinced Paula isn’t dissembling a bit here) knew Goodspeed was stalking Paula and put her through anyway, that IS explosive stuff, to quote Barbara Walters.

As far as Paula’s contract is concerned–all the leaks about Paula leaving the show make sense now.   Of course her people planted that stuff.   She was looking to either re-negotiate her contract, and/or put out feelers for a new job.

After the jump, I’ve got some interviews from Access Hollywood, and Extra where she also hints that producers ignored her warnings about Goodspeed.

Watch after the JUMP…

This sounds like it could be an uncomfortable year at the judges table. :/

  • abbysee

If they did put through that woman against Paula’s wishes, someone has a case…..if Paula lied, it gets very interesting indeed.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Ooooooooh, SCANDAL!!

If they put Godspeed through as a source of entertainment and ridicule, then that’s ridiculous.

Heh. Paula Godspeed definitely had something to do with there not being as many “bad” auditions this year.

  • snuffles

I think it could be easily proven if Paula had a restraining order on Ms. Goodspeed before her appearance. And if the Idol producers were doing their JOBS, they would have known that ahead of time. Yet they still put the whack job through.

  • Duke

it always in mid december that idol starts rounding up anything and everything they can to promote the next season of Idol. unfortunately, it happens to be an auditioners suicide this year. any publicity is good publicity.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I just posted a clip from Barbara Walter’s radio show. Paula said FOX gave away her home address and that Goodspeed said in her letters that Paula would be only good to her if she were in Heaven and could be her guardian angel…

  • Niall

If the producers really knew this woman was stalking Paula, yet they allowed her through anyway? That screams potential lawsuit to me. Paula indicated the physical acts of stalking didn’t start until after the Idol audition, which would be another strike against AI because they allowed the situation to escalate by feeding the woman’s fantasies.

  • aly

They call this entertainment? This is a person’s life they
played with..and… For what?…..the almighty dollar. Sickens me.

  • houstonrufus

Yowza. Either Paula has completely swallowed her foot yet again or the coming season looks to be, um, tense.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

If this is true, negotiate away, Paula Abdul….

  • Hazehel

It sounds odd to me. Why would the producer say “just wait until you see this next girl” unless they don’t know that Paula already knew her or that she is stalking Paula? The claim that of Simon trying to ruin her career is just bizarre, and by just whispering in her ear? And the claim that Fox give the stalker her home address is really weird, is it that hard to find out where celebrities live if you are stalking them? Nothing much makes sense, and I’m not going to put much credence in whatever she has to say. I suspect it has more to do with her using it as a leverage to get another contract, let’s face it, what kind of career has she got now apart from being on AI waffling incoherently?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Why would the producer say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“just wait until you see this next girlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ unless they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that Paula already knew her or that she is stalking Paula?

    She looked like Paula.

    She acted like Paula.

She had drawings that she’d made of Paula.

    She wanted to be Paula.

She was a source of entertainment.

Randy and Simon had a field day when the girl walked into the room. The sad thing is, we find out down the road that she was mentally disturbed.

Who knows? Maybe they thought it was just a fanatical obsession. Maybe not. But, I have to believe that if she protested, the should have listened.

Why lie about it on national television? I don’t think she’s ready to leave just yet.

I just found a longer clip of The View this morning. I posted it above.

    Wow!

  • lucy

I stopped watching the auditions a few years ago because it seemed perfectly obvious to me that they were deliberately putting through quite a few people who were mentally disturbed or, in some cases, mentally challenged to the extent that they couldn’t possibly understand how they were being used for laughs and ratings. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

I’m not sure I believe that Paula’s dumb enough to lie about the situation now. But if she’s telling the truth, I’d think she and the producers both should have realized that the woman’s fantasies would likely escalate if they put her in a room auditioning in front of Paula, and escalate they did.

And now we have yet another major backstage truth that we’ll never hear about in the course of the broadcasts. They ought to issue a public apology for treating so many people so cavalierly in their pursuit of dollars, but that’ll be the day. They’ll just pretend to give more money to fight malaria in Africa instead, I guess.

  • john_socal

I’m starting to wonder how Paula made it through to the Hollywood rounds for judges? Maybe its just an act but based on her Bravo show and Idol, I’d have to say she’s in the Michael Jackson category of celebrity. OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY. Or possibly just plain nuts. Its all great entertainment though!

  • Hazehel

Why lie about it on national television?

I didn’t say she lied (she didn’t say it on TV anyway), I simply said I wouldn’t put much credence on what she said. She could be mistaken, misinterpreted what happened, she could be having one of her moments, or she could just being economical with the truth, or stretched what is the truth, or allowed room for others to misinterpret.

My point about what the producer said is that you don’t say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“just wait until you see this next girl, she is crazy about you.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (note “this next girl”, not “her”) if you know that person is already known to the one you are speaking to. It was suppose to be a surprise to Paula.

  • snuffles

FYI – there are 2 rounds of auditions before you get before the judges.

1st round – Cattle call. That’s where you see the thousands of people lined up. They usually cut that down to about 300 people.

2nd round – Producers audition. This is usually about a week or so later. You fill out a ton of paperwork and audition in front of the producers. They narrow down THAT group to about 100 people.

3rd round – Judges audition. Depending on the schedule that could be anywhere from days or WEEKS later. And it’s usually spread across 2 days. Split the group into 2 groups of 50 that go before the judges.

I know all this because I have a friend who auditioned and got before the judges. The whole process took almost a month. She auditioned in LA.

She did it for shits and giggles (and we played along) but I saw first hand how the producers and the TV crew try to manipulate you into looking like an idiot on camera. Or try to make you cry and act out, etc… It’s amazing the stuff you’ll do just to get some face time. I even surprised myself.

  • SallyinIllinois

This is indeed explosive, but Paula is rich now so she can open up about some private things happening on the show. Her jewelry on the view was absolutely gorgeous, I may buy some….hopefully she has good quality for a low-price and not cheap stuff. She should become a multi-mill$$ if the jewelry sells and she can be through with Idol….however, I think she’s probably exaggerating a little bit about Godspeed and the producers….Paula has a tendency for the dramatic.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I have to believe there will be some fallout from the accusations of them trying to ruin her career. Fox certainly can’t be happy about that statement and I sure don’t expect Simon to keep his mouth shut!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

About 200 people end up making it to the Hollywood Rounds. Unless the producers advance people to Hollywood without auditioning in front of the judges, I think RPKS see more than 100 people.

Anyway, I saw Paula’s reality show, and came away thinking that she had some emotional problems. I don’t think she’d lie, but she appears to be extremely self-centered and narcissistic, her view of reality might be a little skewed, methinks.

So, I could see her misremembering things, or re-inventing the timeline a bit as time passed. In her reality show she was constantly freaking out about how people were out to get her and ruin her. It seems to be a consistent theme in her life.

  • snuffles

    MJ,

I was referring to what happens in each city audition. After the judges rounds in each city, THEN are the Hollywood rounds where all the people in each city that got past RPS get together.

I was describing what happened when my friend auditioned in Season 3 when they held auditions in Los Angeles.

    Let me re-cap.

Audition in a city (like LA, Dallas, Nashville, etc..)

    1) Cattle Call
    2) Producer Audition
    3) Randy/Paula/Simon

Repeat until all cities are complete

    4) Hollywood Rounds – they keep cutting until they get to the Top 50

    5) The Chair – they cut the Top 50 to the Top 24 or 36

    6) Semi-Finals and onward – America gets to vote

  • reinharv

Personally, I think it’s highly unlikely that anybody who is connected to A.I. in any official way be it producers or Fox or whoever, gave anyone Paula’s home address. Right there I am suspect of Paula’s story. The best a person would get is a c/o address to 19E and that would be treated like fan mail. The only way a person could find out where Paula (or any celebrity for that matter) lived would basically be to stalk that person and follow him/her home. Since Paula is “employed” by 19E/A.I. that type of information would never be given to anyone let alone a “rejected” contestant.

I’m afraid Paula has set herself up to be a laughing stock. She is a sweet person. Sure I know she’s ditsy and drives Simon nuts, but in this case the wisest thing she could have done is to have kept her mouth shut and said nothing. she’s burned her bridges.

Even in the private sector that kind of “personal” information is almost never given out.

    I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t say she lied…

    The statement was rhetorical.

Why stick your neck out on national television/radio/magazines/whatever if there’s not some truth to the situation? There are consequences. Hence, why I think it’s worth listening to.

Perhaps this is what Paula meant…putting someone in a position to be able to follow her home.
I honestly don’t know what to think. Wasn’t it mentioned on yesterday’s View clip that Whoopie and Paula used to be roommates? Was it me, or did Whoopie seem to be defending Paula on today’s clip? I don’t watch this show so maybe she just wanted to add some stirred up controversy. IDK.

For some reason my heart just goes out to Paula…

No, it was mentioned that Paula and Kara DioGuardi were roomates

  • serenade

Well, that’s scandalous and disturbing. After seven going on eight seasons of American Idol, some of the dirty laundry is starting to be aired. Actually, Paula’s claims while sad don’t really surprise me. I saw glimpses of how exploitative the AI producers are last season and it was enough to realize they can be quite ruthless to get the results they want. Someone’s gotta write the tell-all book someday. It just might be Paula Abdul.

  • billsmith1976

I’m getting real tired of Paula Abdul getting treated like some kind of victim. Paula Goodspeed has been through enough, so Abdul needs to stop slamming her. She had obvious mental problems (Goodspeed not Abdul) (Ok, Abdul too), so the A.I. Producers need to be held accountable for this tragedy, if not by the law then by revenue.
RAISE SOME HELL, BOYCOTT THE SHOW, BUT PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

Paula Abdul was victimized by that wacko for 17 years and has the right to say anything about her that she wishes. She’s actually been quite empathetic all things considered. Goodspeed did have mental health issues and shouldn’t have been on AI but Paula’s life was threatened for years while this stalker had free reign.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

It ´s sad that there is even room from controversy, certainly the story has elements that sound quite convincing, I can totally see producers let in Goodspeed pass the first rounds or the “sake” of “good TV”… but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think they will give Paula personal information away, and if this woman was so seriously stalking Paula and had done dangerous things against her, why Paula didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t call the police and have her arrested, maybe this could have save Goodspeedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s life…for me this sound more like something done just to get media attention, to the show or to Paula herself…

Beside I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Paula is allow to talk about this kinds of things there has to be a confidentiality agreement for the judges… you know not to trash the other part so if Fox is let in her talk maybe is just publicity to get people attention, and using poor Goodspeed ´s name to get viewers is all kinds of wrong IMO…

Right now her comments have let Idol in a bad situation, they can even get a sue because of thisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t something like this happened in an interview show were a roommate kill his friends after this can out of the closet on air and told him he was in love with him, if I remember correctly the show producer were sued by the family of the victimà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ maybe we will see something like this happening to Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and another thing for Paula my dad always said “Dont bite the hand that feeds you” right now Paula is doing exactly that…

  • Niall

Paula Abdul was granted restraining orders and there may well have been police contact with Goodspeed. However the law pretty much dictates that Goodspeed has to do something to Abdul before they can arrest her. On top of that, her family comments in the days after her suicide lead me to believe they were enabling of her and in denial there was a problem. If you want to blame somebody for the stalking of Paula Abdul and the eventual suicide blame Paula Goodspeed’s family.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

^I don ´t want to blame anybody, but why I care right now, sorry if it made me look cold towards the poor woman ´s death, is how this affect AI and Paula ´s image… any person who is listening to these interviews will come to a different set of conclussions, like we are doing right now, some will be Team AI, some will be Team Paula and some will chose Team Goodspeed, and this can affect AI ´s image as a “dream maker machine” that in the end is the image the show wants, until some point, so all this questions about what they did or didn ´t do something to prevent this event will be made and it will depend in how well this questions are answered how the differents parts will be affected in the future…IMO

  • davidlove

I tend to agree with the harpies on this issue.

And I believe AI acted recklessly putting Goodspeed on, as well as several other contestants over the years to be subjected to ridicule. They are playing with people’s lives.

  • CookorHubbyHmm

AI recklessly puts a lot of people through that shouldn’t be put through. They like to say that it is a serious singing competition, yet they put mentally handicapped people through, or odd people through just to spike ratings aka make fun of them. That blonde chick that looked like David Bowie from last year was a prime example of someone that should not have been put through. Same volatile vibe that Goodspeed possessed. I don’t believe a word that Paula says because frankly she is a liar. Anyone who says that they do not abuse drugs, yet they behave the way that she does…is lying. There are always many holes in her story. Having said that…I would not be surprised if her allegations against AI were true. The bit about Simon is laughable. He is the least of her problems. She exhibits enough strange behavior on her own to shape people’s opinions. I am an AI fan, but the “funny” auditions, in my opinion, have always been in poor taste. It’s the worst part about the show.

  • sfbb

I don’t think Paula is just flat out making this up. I know she has her issues…..but so does AI. This is not an ethical company. The exploitation of contestants not only in the early stages…..but as they progress, is purely motivated by the almight dollar, and they don’t CARE that this woman was sick and is now dead.

What seems odd to me, is that if she did have a legal restraining order at the time, she could have called the police…..or……..she could have walked out of the audition (which is what I would have done).

However, I’ll give Paula the benefit of the doubt. Because I think the AI producers are not nice people. And I will be happy whenever David is able to get away from 19 management.
