According to the website Mollygood.com, Barack Obama may be appearing on Saturday Night Live on November 1–the week David Cook is scheduled to perform.

I heard from one of Sarahà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s aides this morning that at the obligatory SNL after party, a slightly affected Seth Meyers blurted out something to the effect of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦yeah, but just wait til you see what we have cooked up for Obamaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s appearance right before the election.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ You may remember that Obama à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“canceledà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ his appearance on the show on opening night because of Hurricane Ike. But sources now say that it could have been a ploy cooked up by Lorne Michaels and David Axelrod to save Obama for the November 1st showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ right before the election.

Hm. That could be very interesting indeed, and great for ratings. Ben Affleck will be the SNL host November 1.

And in other random news, Kevin Griffin from the band Better than Ezra writes in a My Space blog that he co-wrote the tune “Avalanche” from David Cook’s upcoming album

Also, I have a song I wrote with David Cook that will be on his debut album out November 18. The song is called “Avalanche”. You may recall an old song titled “Avalanche” that I would play at shows, but this is a new song. I always loved the title and finally got the song right working with David.

Add Kevin Griffin to the list of David Cook’s co-writers that include, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Johnny Rzeznik if the Goo Goo Dolls, and Cathy Dennis (Britney Spears, “Toxic”).

That will be HUGE if Obama is on that show with Cook! Just think of the millions of viewers watching Cookie! Oh my!

  • GEEK4VOCAB

If Obama is on that episode… OH MY GOD… do you realize how many people will be watching????

    OH MY GOD!

  • Joanna

Ah yes…one more thing I’ll have to fast forward through to get to Cook’s performance(s).

  • Deejay

Obama plus Cook = the winningest win that ever won.

Based on this past Saturday’s ratings with Palin (highest in FOURTEEN YEARS), the Nov. 1 show is going to be off the charts with Obama there just three days before the election. Great news for Cook! Couldn’t be happier for him. :thumbup_tb:

  • idolfan86

eww now i definitely wont be watching lol

  • JOJOSIE

I don’t always watch but with two of my favorite guys on I’ll be glued to the set. I had hoped Obama would be on sometime soon as he was scheduled to be on an earlier show. Cook being on was a surprise as Idols usually don’t end up on the show that soon. Can’t wait. Whooooo

  • leome

Cook Obama Affleck Tina! That will be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I’m still wondering what will be his second song…
I’m thinking, Dream Big would actually be a good song for something with Obam… though I know that’s not an option. I just hope it’s not TOML.

I’ve never heard of Better than Ezra. That’s one I’ll have to check out.

The more people watching David Cook, the better.

    Please, let this be true!!!

  • windmills

Hey MJ shouldn’t that be KEVIN Griffin? I’m a big fan of Better Than Ezra.

Probably. I seem to have a problem with people’s first names. lol.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Kevin Griffin said this Avalanche was new, but some seem to think that it’s a doctored up version of what he might have sung live.

  • jenniewdc

Can’t wait! Hope the info’s right! Two of my favorite guys! Maybe three — if I count Affleck.

  • Michelle

I’ll be watching anyway, but if Obama is on that’ll be a huge ratings bonus :)

  • john_socal

As much as I love David Cook, I’ll give this news a loud BOOOOO! Thankfullly, my DVR can laser focus on the musical guest. I’ll go out on a limb and predict the ratings will be lower than when Sarah was on and would have been even lower if David wasn’t scheduled! Music is such a great escape from politics – I will continue to hope David remains apolitcal lest he alienate half the population like so many other celebrities. Music David – concentrate on the music! That is your gift.

  • bean99

Very cool. Now that’s one SNL I’ll watch or at least record. Good for David being on it.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

Music David – concentrate on the music! That is your gift.

    I agree, John.
I think it’s best for David right now not to support any Presidential candidate publicly
(even though I’d be really excited if he supports Obama like I do LOL).

  • kozisedso

Between the news about SNL and the album I can’t take too much more excitement. OMG OMG OMG – now I have to go out and buy a case of Depends……………………………………………………………

  • Lisa

I’m confused. I just saw a commercial for this week’s upcoming SNL and it said ColdPlay was the guest? Was David cancelled?

  • Michelle

    Coldplay: 10/25
    David: 11/1

  • Lisa

    Phew! Thank you Michelle.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

I don’t know where to post this, but there’s a pic of David Cook and his band together from EW:

  • Sarah

    Wow, just wow!
Love Barack, love David, love just thinking of the possibility that they could share a stage for even a second! And love the ratings that this could equal. Now I need to not get my hopes up too high.
Can’t we just fast-forward through October already?

  • Lisa

Don’t care for this pic at all and hope they do not use it. The pic makes it look like the guy on the right (forget his name) is the lead/star. Hope this guy does not have a tude. David should have been more prominent.

I totally agree. I am very strong feelings about politics, so I just wish celebrities would do what they do best and stay out of it. They will keep more fans.

It’s okay for now, I think, because it wasn’t a professional photo. :laugh_tb:

  • GEEK4VOCAB

I love that picture of David and the band! They look like they’re having fun!

  • Suzanne

David could meet the next President. That’s incredible. Imagine meeting a President only a few days before that person is elected to office?

I don’t think the ratings will be higher if Obama is on b/c these things are a “surprise” but the ratings will be sky high because the whole country will be watching to see if Tina Fey is on again as Sarah Palin.

It’ll be a great audience for David. I wonder what his second song will be? Does he do his other single, or does he sing a new one?

  • john_socal

Lisa, the guy on the right in the picture is Andy Skib and he has no attitude! He’s a fantastic songwriter and musician in his own right. Check out myspace.com/tohaveheroes!

I think if the rumors get out that Obama may appear, it’s even more exposure for Cook. That said, I don’t think his appearance means he’s endorsing anyone. I agree… for the Idols right now, it’s best to be neutral.

Personally, I’ve already cast my vote for Obama and proud of it. :) Gotta love early voting! Not that it matters in my state. I really think we should go to a national popular vote for national elections. I’m sure there are plenty of people who would agree whether they are dems, republicans or independants.

Yeah, and even if Obama doesn’t end up appearing, I think the ratings will still be high..last SNL before 4/11, gotta be huge! LOL

  • elisad

Andy will love it… Poor Joe the Senator, nobody cares about him… Heehee, I love Seth Meyers, he wrote all the Palin sketches.

  • cookcricket

I too hope the “rumor’ that Obama will be on SNL will help the viewship for DC! Yeah!!!! That said, I guess I’m not so disapppointed I’ll miss the show and have to watch the “David Cook Band” LOL, online.

Oh, but I’ll have to admit I’d love to see the actual performance(s)!

  • Layla

I know that MJ’s not gonna let this thread go the political route, but Obama!!!! :clap_tb:

This is effin’ great! The ratings will be off the chart and DC and The Band will greaty benefit from the exposure.

This is made of all kinds of win!!!!

That’s right. Because it’s off topic. There are political boards for that sort of thing.

Partisan Idol politics are bad enough…

Thanks MJ. I don’t think 11/4 will ever get here. Count me amongst those that think famous people should sing/act/look pretty and keep their politics to themselves.

On topic: Assuming Cook does the usual 2 songs, and one of them isn’t Magic Rainbows, I wonder what the second song might be? A girl can dream…

  • elisad

My guess is, David will do one of the 2 songs he mentioned in the MTV interview, Bar-ba-sol or Permanent.

  • Layla

oh elisad, I hope you are right. As proud as I am of TOML, it just doesn’t lend itself to the David Cook Band sound.

Please let it be something from the record…maybe it will be the bonus track on itunes…what’s it callled? Gotta go check that out!

  • elisad

^_^ You betcha it would not be the itunes exclusive bonus track, or they’ll be pissed~

I think David will be fine. It reminds me of all those elevator pictures from AI where David was always in the back holding up the wall. That didn’t seem to hurt him any. All he has to do is open his mouth and sing, and he will be absolutely fine.

  • sma11ie

^_^ You betcha it would not be the itunes exclusive bonus track, or theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be pissed~

I’m not saying it will be, but I don’t think iTunes would care if they performed the bonus track. It’s an exclusive track you can only get if you pre-order the album from iTunes, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t perform it elsewhere. iTunes doesn’t have actual rights to the song outside of selling it. I mean, if they perform it and people dig it, they might seek it out on iTunes, realize it’s album-only, and decide to pre-order! Haha. I’m not saying that’s the case though. I tend to think that if the song is likely to be *that* popular that one play on SNL would drive people in droves to iTunes, they’d probably save it for the next single rather than bury it as a fans-only pre-order track. Of course, I have no doubt that the exclusive is going to kick ass, much like the rest of the album =).

  • maturin

He’s been playing with that dude forever, right? He’s one of the musicians on Analog Heart and in that Midwest Kings band. Scary that I know this, because I used to be all please do not bore me with the details of Cook’s life in Tulsa.

  • Deejay

Count me amongst those that think famous people should sing/act/look pretty and keep their politics to themselves.

I disagree. If you have a platform to make a statement, there’s nothing wrong with using it IMO. So long as you’re prepared for any backlash that may result. But that’s just me. I have respect for people who use their fame for something meaningful. And people’s political opinions generally don’t turn me off from them, so it’s not a big deal to me.

  • Sarah

Agree with Deejay. I write/parent/look pretty (I hope??) every day, and also talk politics whenever I want. Am I off topic now? I hope not. I’m such a rules follower. (Go rock SNL, Barack and David!)

  • Joanna

I have respect for people who use their fame for something meaningful.

That’s fine, but I guess we disagree on what makes something meaningful. Jumping on the political bandwagon of a popular candidate isn’t meaningful…in fact, I’d call it PR.

ETA: Darn…I don’t have anything on topic to say. Feel free to delete, MJ.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Lorne Michaels did an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the Palin appearance. Here’s a hint that one (or more) candidates could be on the show in the next few days:

Any other planned candidate appearances before the election?

Yes, but again, until they’re in the building I’m not going to talk about it.

  • Keel

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fine, but I guess we disagree on what makes something meaningful. Jumping on the political bandwagon of a popular candidate isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t meaningfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦in fact, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d call it PR.

Actually, given how divisive political discourse in this country is right now, jumping on ANY political bandwagon is actually a very dangerous (and foolish) thing for any celeb to do. You might turn some heads and convert a few into casual fans who weren’t fans before, but you could completely alienate hard core fans who will turn their backs on you because they perceive that you’re on the WRONG side of the political divide.

I’m sure Cook won’t make the mistake of being outspoken in his political views this early in his career (if ever), but off-camera, if he chooses, why shouldn’t he be able to discuss politics like any other American citizen? And if he does choose to do it on-camera, yeah, he sure as hell better be prepared for the backlash — just like any celeb.

  • elisad

40% is about as low a Dem/Pub presidential candidate can poll in America, so there is no “popular bandwagon”. Any political statement is like to turn off half of the country. But I think, a celeb is free to say anything they want to just like regular people. And they will also take the consequences of that.

  • IndyMuse

Not only did Andy Skibb sing lead when David was in MWK and do backup vocals with him on some of Analog Heart, he was backup on Axium’s Hold and, I think, one other. They’ve been friends for years. David has a tendency to showcase others and not himself. I imagine this was his idea to not be in front in the picture. I’m sure he’ll be front and center enough on the video.

  • Deejay

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fine, but I guess we disagree on what makes something meaningful. Jumping on the political bandwagon of a popular candidate isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t meaningfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦in fact, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d call it PR.

If you care about the future of this nation (and world, by extension) and think a certain candidate would be good for the country, I don’t see how promoting said candidate is not meaningful, no matter which candidate you’re supporting. Now, if you don’t care at all, and it’s just a PR gimmick, then of course it’s not meaningful.

But I wouldn’t call it PR for someone like Cook…unless it’s the worst PR ever (alienating half of a fanbase is not good PR, as others have said). The only time I could call it PR would be if the entire fanbase had the same political views.

That’s why I have respect for people who go there…because it’s both risky and kind of noble for someone to put the outcome of this election above his record sales. (Since the outcome is not clear-cut, any extra support could make a difference.)

I’m not saying that’s what Cook (or anyone else) should do because again, it’s risky, so it’s not always a smart move.

I’m sorry, MJ…we’re totally off-topic. So feel free to delete this if you must.
