On Friday, June 26, Nigel Lythgoe, aka dizzyfeet challenges the twitterverse: “People please use Twitter-Power. Ask @PaulaAbdul to choreograph a Michael Jackson tribute on SYTYCD”

Nigel twittered Paula Abdul, asking her to choreograph an MJ tribute for this week.

Paula responds: “Have your people call my people Nigel and let’s do it! Lol”.

Back in the 80′s Paula did choreography for the Jackson family, including Janet Jackson’s “Control”.

She twittered, “I started my career doing choreography for the Jackson family! I was honored and blessed to get to work with them…I worked w/ the whole family when they got ready for the Reunion tour,1st video was ‘Torture’ & did the Victory tour.”

Nigel twittered back a little later: “I would get my people to call yours? But I have 2 issues. 1. I don’t know who your people are? 2. I haven’t got any people? Xox”

Ha ha!

Would that be awesome or what? It’s about time Paula choreographs for So You Think You Can Dance, and what better time than now?

Are you guys as psyched about this possibility as I am?

  • gingerly

I’d love to see that. I think her choregraphy skills are much better than her talking skills.

Wouldn’t it be cool if they had the Top 10 perform a live medley of Michael Jackson songs as part of this tribute show? The Idols could then describe Michael’s influence on them before the taped performance of the song they did on the episode. It sounds like something like this might be in the works. Certainly more interesting than just reairing the epi. Fox is all about ratings and you know people would watch this. Cool. Look forward to updates.

  • LisaE

I saw this as well. I think it would be awesome! Paula should make it happen.

  • lavender1960

    Great idea foxydonna

Yes people forget just how good a choreographer Paula is. The group number she did for AI this season was probably the best AI group number ever. Bwah. Even her new video for her single off her recent album the choreography was cool.

Yes I remember Paula was in the video for What Have You Done for Me Lately by JJ – I was always a bigger JJ fan than MJ, well I always liked MJ’s music up until the point he got too weird for me. Janet always seemed a more grounded chick in spite of the madness around her family, she forged her own path, and I loved watching her grow into a beautiful independent woman.

Much as we sometimes griped about Nigel, he is certainly a charming and witty guy. Contrast with Simon.

  • Tess

Anyone can say what they want about Paula but her dance and choreography skills are legend, IMHO. I would actually watch the program (not just the snippets mj provides for us here) to see that. Great Idea!!

  • Chrissy

This would be great-I love Paula & her dancing. :)

    Psyched here. :)

  • Sunn

I was hoping the tribute would be in the form of all the dancers dancing their set pieces to MJ music, though I realize that may not be possible for some of the Ballroom styles. But failing that this would be my second choice of a tribute.

I would love to see a spectacular dance routine se to a Jackson medley. I If she does this, I hope Paula uses her imagination, and not resort to the tired 80′s style bag of tricks like she did for her AI performance.

  • Journeylover

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I would get my people to call yours? But I have 2 issues. 1. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who your people are? 2. I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t got any people? Xoxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Nigel is so funny. I love this guy. This is a geat idea. Love to see real dancers do a Paula routine. The idols are fun, but NOT DANCERS.

  • rockvixen

I am excited for this! Paula is a better dancer than singer and I much rather have her dance than sing.

  • catdog

What a great idea! Maybe this will parlay into Paula judging Dance next year as well as Idol. Is that possible?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Would love it, too! :-) I’d also like to see her guest judge. I mean, if they let Toni “Street” Basil on there, why not?

  • Truthiness

I liked her number for AI. It was cheesy-tastically delicious. Pointy Poses! But hey, that was appropriate given that it was Disco night, and it’s AI. One can’t get much cheesier than a combination of those two things.

But it would be cool to see what Paula could do with professional dancers and especially given that she had worked with the Jacksons before. Excellent idea. Hope it happens.

  • MommaDuck

Would love to see this happen! I can’t think of a better person to pull this off than Paula.

  • Dr. Tracey

Are you guys as psyched about this possibility as I am?

    Absofrickinlutely! That’s a brilliant idea.

  • sabby_rina

I’m all for this! I use to look to Paula as a kid for her dancing. She’s the perfect person for the job.

  • gangreen29

What the hell is Nigel talking about? How would he not know how to get in contact with Paula’s management team? He worked with her for years! He is coming across as an idiot and very unprofessional by doing this on twitter.

  • jack5791

I don’t watch So You Think You Can Dance but I think this is a really cool idea and I would definitely watch for this!

  • bentsinister

I’ve been wondering if they really do have this in the works, but they’re tweeting about it in order to promote it (under the pretense of actually arranging it spontaneously via Twitter).

Wade Robson doing a tribute to MJ would be great too, since he also worked with MJ.

  • butte009

Maybe this will parlay into Paula judging Dance next year as well as Idol. Is that possible?

Please No. I don’t mind her doing choreography. She’s more than proven herself in that department. Judging I can do without.

And Toni Basil should never be allowed on the show again either, IMO. Worst guest judge by a mile.

I think this whole twitter thing between Nigel and Paula is just good old tongue-in-cheek humour. The thought is serious, but as others have alluded to, this is a very good way of marketing if this is really going to happen. And, oftentimes, tongue-in-cheek isn’t usually forthcoming unless there is actually substance behind it. So, I think the chances of this happening are pretty good.

  • lilbrusc102

I’ve been monitoring this conversation as well, haha. It would be freaking brilliant, and an amazing tribute to MJ!

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

I think this would be awesome! I hope it happens. :)

Also, it looks like there might be a NapTab couple routine this week. From their twitter yesterday:

Rehearsal this morning. Now going back for round 2!

    Absofrickinlutely! Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a brilliant idea.

Ditto that. Paula is the perfect choice for this idea. She was without a doubt one of the go to choreographers of that time, and she’s probably more well versed in those classic moves than anyone other than MJ could be. (Well, other than the extraordinary Michael Peters, but alas he too has passed on.)

  • TwigLA

I think that would be awesome. Paula is an excellent choreographer.

  • CookifiedTexan

Consider me psyched. That would be awesome. Paula may not always be fully coherent, but damn that woman can dance. Hope this comes to fruition.

  • hwc

Paula did not teach Michael Jackson all his Fred Astaire moves.

  • Ladybug

I love Paula’s choreography with Janet. I think this would be a fantastic collaboration.

  • SpenserJ

Paula did not teach Michael Jackson all his Fred Astaire moves.

No one taught Michael his moves. You can’t teach that kind of instinctual movement. Paula never choreographed for Michael individually either – only for the Jacksons as a group. But the two men who did choreograph Michael’s iconic videos are dead. So, she’s a damn good backup choice.

  • Dlynne

My guess is that the tweets are just a fun way of making the announcement. I can’t believe that they would put it out there if it wasn’t already in the works.

    I can’t wait!

  • suebrody

It would be AMAZING if Wade Robson would do a MJ piece (he learned his dance moves from watching MJ videos, and performed Thriller as a 9-year-old on Star Search). And yes, Paula coud certainly work with the SYTYCD contestants on a phenomenal number. She danced a helluva lot better on Idol this year than she sang (sorry, lip synched).

I think the Idols should perform Thriller on the Tour. :)

  • abbysee

I would absolutely love it if Paula choreographed an MJ tribute. It’s absolutely fitting, I think. Paula was one of the premiere choreographers at that time, it would be wonderful. She did a great job with the idols this year, imagine what she could do with dancers.

  • Grammie Kari

Would love it, too! :-) Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d also like to see her guest judge. I mean, if they let Toni à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Streetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Basil on there, why not?

My memory escapes me, but didn’t Paula judge an audition round the first season?

Yes, I think it would be great seeing Paula do something she loves!

  • lavender1960

FYI who did choreograph for MJ during the Thriller years?

  • SpenserJ

Lavender, the answer to your question would be the awesome and fabulous Michael Peters. (Also known as the gang leader in the white jacket and white pants with sunglasses in the Beat It video).
